A microring resonator wavelength tunable filter utilizing the large electro-refractive effect in InGaAs/InAlAs FACQWs was proposed and demonstrated for the first time. The resonant wavelength shift of 0.9 nm was obtained at 13 V.

Abstract

Artificial neural networks have been applied to pattern recognition, prediction and control because they have abilities of learning, generalization and nonlinear mapping. These conventional neural networks have not had “intelligence” yet. In pattern recognition, the recognition rate can be low when there are some noises in recognized patterns. Not so many neural networks have been reported that introduce the structural and functional characteristics of the brain obtained by the progress of neurophysiology. In this study, we focused on the cerebral neocortex, which is the most developed in human to be compared with the other animals and deals with recognition, language and imagination, introduced its characteristics of uniform, hierarchical, column structures and six layers to neural networks and investigated the possibility of emerging its functional characteristics of the human brain.Copyright © 2008 by ASME

Abstract

Quinones can accept two electrons and two protons, and are involved in electron transfer and proton transfer reactions in photosynthetic reaction centers. To date, the p K of these quinones in aqueous solution have not been reported. We calculated the p K of the initial protonation (Q to QH) and the second protonation (QH to QH) of 1,4-quinones using a quantum chemical approach. The calculated energy differences of the protonation reactions Q to QH and QH to QH in the aqueous phase for nine 1,4-quinones were highly correlated with the experimentally measured p K (Q/QH) and p K (QH/QH), respectively. In the present study, we report the p K (Q/QH) and p K (QH/QH) of ubiquinone, menaquinone, phylloquinone, plastoquinone, and rhodoquinone in aqueous solution. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The purpose of this study is to re-evaluate the educational significance of the Yale Seminar, which is the most influential promoter of modernization in music education. Analyzing the report of the Yale Seminar and articles about it, the following distinguishing facets were revealed: (1) the Yale's multiple recommendations made a hierarchical structure which was dominated by the nature of musicality, (2) in America, however, the Yale's significance were recognized as a factor contributing to expand repertory rather than define musicality.

Abstract

The flame speed in vortex rings of methane/air and propane/air mixtures has been measured bya high speed video camera and the maximum tangential velocity in the vortex ring has been estimated from the hot-wire measurements on the cold-air vortex rings. Results show that in accordance with the back-pressure drive flame propagation mechanism the flame speeds increase almost linearly with the maximum tangential velocity and their slopes are around unity for all the lean, stoichiometric and rich mixtures investigated. However, it is found that the flame speed is lowered down when the flame diameter becomes small, and the flame can never propagate in lean mixtures if the flame diameter becomes less than the order of the laminar flame thickness. Also, it is found that in the near rich-limit methane/air mixture the flame speed becomes almost constant independently of the maximum tangential velocity. It would appear that the flame should propagate in the mixing zone with the ambient air.

Abstract

Introduction: Aberrant methylation levels in the cytosine-phosphate-guanine island (CpGi) region from exon 1 to intron 1 of the zygote arrest 1 (ZAR1) gene have been reported in several types of human cancers, including melanoma, brain tumor, and hepatocellular carcinoma. In the present study, methylation levels at the CpGi of ZAR1 exon 1/intron 1 in bladder cancer specimens were analyzed using mass spectrometry. Materials and Methods: Genomic DNA was extracted from 20 sporadic bladder cancers, and the methylation levels at ZAR1 CpGi were quantitatively examined by the MassARRAY EpiTYPER method. Result: The methylation levels at specific CpG sites of the ZAR1 CpGi were significantly lower in high-grade bladder cancers than in low-grade tumors. Conclusions: The results of the present study indicated a decreased methylation level at CpG sites of ZAR1 exon 1/intron 1. CpGi could serve as a biomarker for invasive bladder cancer. © 2014 S.
