We discuss several effects due to lensing of ultra high energy cosmic rays by the regular component of the galactic magnetic field. Large flux magnification around caustics can be a significant source of clustering in the arrival directions of UHECRs of comparable energy. We also discuss lensing effects in a hypothetical galactic magnetic wind model recently proposed to explain the extremely high energy cosmic rays so far observed as originating from a single source (M87). This model implies large flux magnifications, which reduce the power requirements on the source, and a significant asymmetry in the expected flux between the north and south galactic hemispheres. Measurements with the Pierre Auger Observatory indicate with unprecedented statistics that the flux of cosmic rays is strongly suppressed above 4 × 1019 eV. The suppression is consistent with the prediction that cosmic rays with larger energies can only arrive from nearby sources due to their interaction with the cosmic microwave background, but could also be related to the efficiency of the acceleration processes at the sources. The Observatory has found independent evidence of the nearby extragalactic origin of cosmic rays with energy above ~6×1019 eV with a measurement of the fraction of arrival directions that correlate with the positions of active galactic nuclei within ~100 Mpc. This correlation does not identify active galaxies as the sites of origin, since their distribution traces the overall local matter distribution. We review recent measurements made with the Pierre Auger Observatory of the flux, anisotropy and composition of CRs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Pierre Auger Observatory has measured that the flux of cosmic rays is strongly suppressed above 4 × 1019eV. This is consistent with the prediction that cosmic rays with larger energies can only arrive from nearby sources since they must surmount the losses caused by propagation through the cosmic microwave background. The observatory has also found evidence that the inhomogeneous distribution of nearby extragalactic matter imprints its anisotropy upon the arrival directions of cosmic rays with energy above ~ 6 × 1019eV. Correlations are observed with the positions of active galactic nuclei within 100 Mpc, and with other distributions of local extragalactic objects. An excess of events is observed from a region of the sky close to the location of the radio source Cen A. Current measurements identify neither individual sources nor a specific class of sites of origin. We review these results and discuss the perspectives that similar studies with future data, complemented with further measurements of composition of the cosmic rays, may identify their astrophysical sources. The point-splitting method of regularization is applied to alternative Hadamard kernels, for scalar fields in curved backgrounds, in order to study the polarization term in the vacuum expectation value (VEV) of the energy-momentum tensor. An ansatz to define this term is introduced and verified in several cases. The renormalized VEV of the energy-momentum tensor of a scalar massive conformally coupled field in a Robertson–Walker universe is explicitly computed. Two terms appear, the polarization term, which coincides with the one computed using the above-mentioned ansatz, and a creation of particle term. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

136. The superstring, diff S1/S1, and holomorphic geometry

- Abstract
We incorporate superstrings into the non-perturbative formulation of string field theories based on Kähler geometry recently proposed by Bowick and Rajeev. The string field is conjectured to be the Kähler potential of loop space, its equation of motion given by the vanishing of the curvature of a product bundle constructed over a graded Diff S1/S1, as required for reparametrization invariance of the theory. We find that bosonic and fermionic loops in a Minkowski background solve the equation for the Kähler potential only in ten dimensions. We use geometric quantization techniques to calculate the curvature of the super-holomorphic vector bundle, since they emphasize the role of the complex geometry, and flag manifold techniques to calculate the curvature of the line bundle over super-Diff S1/S1.

137. Aspectos geométricos de la renormalización y de los estados cuánticos en el espacio curvo

- Abstract
Se analizan críticamente la detinición del estado de vacio u la renormalización del tensor energía-momento para la teoría cuántica de un campo escalar en presencia de un campo gravitatorio clásico; introducido a través de la geometria de fondo segun los métodos de la teoría de la relatividad general. El enfoque desarrollado se basa en la construcción explícita de todos los propagadores del campo escalar cuyo comportamiento local sea una generalización geométrica de la estructura, para longitud de arco geodésica pequeña, del propagador análogo para la misma teoria en el espacio de Minkomski. Se demuestra que no existe ningún propagador para campos no masivos con ese comportamiento en una geometria de fondo arbitraria, si bien la restricción a la Familia de métricas con tensor de Weyl nulo permite llevar a cabo la construcción propuesta. S establece la conexión entre este resultado y la imposibilidad de Formular una prescripción de renormalización geométrica tal que las divergencias eliminadas no resulten acompañadas por una contribución finita a la traza del tensor energia-momento, hecho que engendra el fenómeno conocido como anomalía de traza. Se manifiestan también, a partir de los resultados obtenidos, los aspectos no-covariantes de la definición del estado de vacio. Se particularizan luego los enfoques propuestos a universos de Robertson-Walker especialmente planos. Se demuestra, hasta el orden perturbativo involucrado en el proceso de renormalización, que el propagador obtenido mediante el desarrollo adiabático de los modos normales del campo coincide con el que determina el formalismo de tiempo propio, que es un propagador geométrico a partir del cual suele basarse el proceso de renormalizacidn. Se formula una hipótesis mínima que debe cumplir todo candidato a estado de vacio alternativo: las divergencias del tensor energía-momento en ese estado deben ser las mismas que las originadas en el vacio adiabático. La exigencia adicional de minimización instantánea de la energia sólo puede ser verificada si el acoplamiento del campo escalar con la curvatura es de tipo conforme. Finalmente se obtienen expresiones formales para elvalor de expectación del tensor energia-momento, identificando un término de polarización y otro debido a las particulas creadas por la expansión del universo, en el estado cuántico que corresponde a la ausencia de particulas en la singularidad cosmológica. A partir de esas expresiones se desprenden conclusiones acerca de las condiciones de contorno que ese estado cuántico representa para la solución de un problema cosmológico. Fil: Harari, Diego D.. More than half a century after the discovery of ultra-high energy cosmic rays (UHECRs), their origin is still an open question. The study of anisotropies in the arrival directions of such particles is an essential ingredient to solve this puzzle. We update our previous analysis of large-scale anisotropies observed by the Pierre Auger Observatory using the latest data collected before the AugerPrime upgrade. We select events with zenith angles up to 80 degrees, implying a sky coverage of 85$\%$, and energies above 4 EeV, for which the surface detector of the Observatory is fully efficient. Dipolar and quadrupolar amplitudes are evaluated through a combined Fourier analysis of the event count rate in right ascension and azimuth. The analysis is performed in three energy bins with boundaries at 4, 8, 16 and 32 EeV and two additional cumulative bins with energies above 8 and 32 EeV. The most significant signal is a dipolar modulation in right ascension for energies above 8 EeV, as previously reported, with statistical significance of $6.6\sigma$. Additionally, we report the measurements of the angular power spectrum for the same energy bins with the same dataset.

7. Clean energy - Abstract
The Pierre Auger Observatory investigates the properties of the highest energy cosmic rays with unprecedented precision. The aim of the AugerPrime upgrade is to improve the sensitivity to the primary particle type. The improved mass sensitivity is the key to exploring the origin of the highest-energy particles in the Universe. The purpose of the Radio Detector (as part of AugerPrime) is to extend the sensitivity of the mass measurements to zenith angles in the range from 65° to 85°. A radio antenna, sensitive in two polarization directions and covering a bandwidth from 30 to 80 MHz, will be added to each of the 1661 surface detector stations over the full 3000 km2 area, forming the world’s largest radio array for the detection of cosmic particles. Since November 2019, an engineering array comprised of ten stations has been installed in the field. The radio antennas are calibrated using the Galactic (diffuse) emission. The sidereal modulation of this signal is monitored continuously and is used to obtain an end-to-end calibration from the receiving antenna to the ADC in the read-out electronics. The calibration method and first results will be presented. The engineering array is also fully integrated in the data acquisition of the Observatory and records air showers regularly. The first air showers detected simultaneously with the water-Cherenkov detectors and the Radio Detectors will be presented. Simulations of the detected showers, based on the reconstructed quantities, have been conducted with CORSIKA/CoREAS. A comparison of the measured radio signals with those predicted by simulations exhibits satisfying agreement.

The Pierre Auger Observatory, located near Malargue, Argentina, is the world's largest cosmic-ray detector. It comprises a $3000\,\mathrm{km}^{2}$ surface detector and 27 fluorescence telescopes, which measure the lateral and longitudinal distributions of the many millions of air-shower particles produced in the interactions initiated by a cosmic ray in the Earth's atmosphere. The determination of the nature of cosmic rays and studies of the detector performances rely on extensive Monte Carlo simulations describing the physics processes occurring in extensive air showers and the detector responses. The aim of the Monte Carlo simulations task is to produce and provide the Auger Collaboration with reference libraries used in a wide variety of analyses. All multipurpose detector simulations are currently produced in local clusters using Slurm and HTCondor. The bulk of the shower simulations are produced on the grid, via the Virtual Organization auger, using the DIRAC middleware. The job submission is made via python scripts using the DIRAC-API. The Auger site is undergoing a major upgrade, which includes the installation of new types of detectors, demanding increased simulation resources. The novel detection of the radio component of extensive air showers is the most challenging endeavor, requiring dedicated shower simulations with very long computation times, not optimized for the grid production. For data redundancy, the simulations are stored on the Lyon server and the grid Disk Pool Manager and are accessible to the Auger members via iRODS and DIRAC, respectively. The CERN VM-File System is used for software distribution where, soon, the Auger Offline software will also be made available.

- Abstract
The Q and U Bolometric Interferometer for Cosmology (QUBIC) Technical Demonstrator (TD) aiming to shows the feasibility of the combination of interferometry and bolometric detection. The electronic readout system is based on an array of 128 NbSi Transition Edge Sensors cooled at 350mK readout with 128 SQUIDs at 1K controlled and amplified by an Application Specific Integrated Circuit at 40K. This readout design allows a 128:1 Time Domain Multiplexing. We report the design and the performance of the detection chain in this paper. The technological demonstrator unwent a campaign of test in the lab. Evaluation of the QUBIC bolometers and readout electronics includes the measurement of I-V curves, time constant and the Noise Equivalent Power. Currently the mean Noise Equivalent Power is ~ 2 x 10-16W= p √Hz...
