143. Integrated Sizing of Water Storage and Conveyance

Abstract

A methodology employing dynamic programming is presented for integrating the optimal design of water supply, treatment, and conveyance systems, where demands for water may vary over a year. The analysis begins with the water conveyance system so as to determine overall monthly water allocations for various possible discrete levels of annual firm yield from a proposed reservoir that maximize net benefits. An analysis is then conducted on the reservoir to determine the minimum required reservoir capacity for each discrete firm yield, given the previously computed water allocations for each level. Given the costs for each sizing, the size and design of the reservoir and conveyance system that maximizes total net benefits is easily found. This study used a generalized dynamic programming code called CSUDP. The algorithm was successfully applied to a portion of the upper Colorado River basin which includes four municipalities, several irrigation projects, and industrial development.

144. Neurologic outcome and blood glucose levels during outofhospital cardiopulmonary resuscitation

Abstract

We examined the interrelations of outcome, time elapsed during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), and blood glucose levels drawn from 83 patients with out-of-hospital cardiac arrest. Levels rose significantly during CPR. Although slope and intercept of regression lines differed for those dying in the field and those admitted, regression lines were similar for those who awoke and never awoke after admission. These results suggest that the previously reported association between poor neurologic recovery and high blood glucose level on admission after cardiac arrest is best explained by prolonged CPR, leading to both higher rise of blood glucose and worse neurologic outcome.

Abstract

Seasonal distribution of nitrogen fixation by Spartina alterniflora epiphytes and in surface and soil samples was investigated in a Georgia salt marsh which was amended with sewage sludge or with glucose and/or ammonium nitrate. There was no significant difference between the rates of fixation in the unamended and sewage sludge plots. Additional perturbation experiments suggested that nitrogen addition indirectly stimulates nitrogen fixation by enhancing Spartina production and root exudation. Glucose additions, on the other hand, suppressed nitrogen fixation on a long-term basis. It is suggested that the microbial population in the soil out-competed the plants for the available nitrogen and in turn suppressed plant production and possibly root exudation. A comparison of nitrogen fixation in clipped and unclipped Spartina plots substantiated the suggestion that root exudation probably supports nitrogen fixation. Fixation in the clipped plots was significantly lower (P < 0.05) than the rates in the unclipped plots.
