It is one of the leading causes of death and is a social disease in China. Increasing studies have revealed that the state of mental health and the social support are associated with the morbidity, mortality and community transmission of pulmonary TB patients. However, the previous global TB control and research strategy focused almost solely on the biomedical aspects. Therefore, in this study, we evaluated the level of depression and explored potential factors, including social support domains and socio-demographic characteristics in pulmonary TB patients to research the mental health state and the association between social support and pulmonary TB, ultimately implementing a multilevel intervene.Methods: A cross-sectional study was carried out to describe the status of depression and social support, and explore related factors associated with depression among pulmonary TB patients in Anhui Province, China. Five counties (districts) in Anhui Province, China were selected by simple random sampling method. Patients diagnosed with pulmonary TB eligible to the study criteria were investigated. A structured questionnaire composed of information on socio-demographic characteristics, self-rating depression scale (SDS) and social support rating scale (SSRS) was used to collect the data.Results: In this study, a total of 250 questionnaires were issued, and the effective questionnaires 237 were actually returned. Of the 237 patients with pulmonary TB, 71.3% of them were male and the mean age was 46.16 years (SD = 13.09). Depression symptoms were observed in 125 (52.7%) participants. Objective support (β = − 0.192, P=0.002) and subjective support (β = − 0.158, P = 0.015) had significantly negative effects on depression, while the effect of support utilization was not statistically significant. In contrast, being female (β = 0.119, P = 0.036) and patients with positive sputum smear results (β = 0.140, P = 0.014) were positively related to depression. Patients with monthly income between 500 and 999 were less likely to suffer from depression (β = − 0.134, P = 0.024) than those who were poorer. Additionally, both education level and marital status were found to be correlated with social support and depression state (all P< 0.05).Discussion: In summary, the prevalence of depressive symptoms in pulmonary TB patients were high in Anhui Province, China. Low levels of social support can be an important predictor of depression symptoms. Therefore, screening for depression among pulmonary TB patients in the primary care setting is greatly warranted. The aim of our study was to investigate the association of leptin (LEP) gene (rs11761556, rs12706832, rs2167270), leptin receptor (LEPR) gene (rs1137100, rs1137101, rs1805096) variants and pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) susceptibility, as well as their several clinical manifestations, in a Chinese population.This study included a cohort of 489 PTB patients and 489 healthy controls, and six SNPs were genotyped by improved multiple ligase detection reaction (iMLDR).We found that there were no significant differences regarding the allele and genotype frequencies of LEP rs11761556, rs12706832, rs2167270, LEPR rs1137100, rs1137101, rs1805096 between PTB patients and healthy controls (all P 0.05), as well as the results of the dominant model and recessive model (all P 0.05). In the LEP gene, the rs11761556 AA genotype frequency was significantly associated with the development of fever and pulmonary infection in PTB patients (P = 0.035, P = 0.049). In addition, the relation between main haplotypes and PTB patients was also analyzed, but only haplotype CAG in LEP was significantly associated with PTB susceptibility (P = 0.012).LEP and LEPR heritable variation were not contribute to the pathogenesis of PTB in Chinese. While rs11761556 variant might associate with several clinical features of PTB.

Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic caused by severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) has led to an unprecedented setback for global economy and health. Vaccination is one of the most effective interventions to substantially reduce severe disease and death due to SARS-CoV-2 infection. Vaccination programmes are being rolled out globally, but most of these vaccines have been approved without extensive studies on their side-effects and efficacy. Recently, new-onset autoimmune phenomena after COVID-19 vaccination have been reported increasingly (e.g. immune thrombotic thrombocytopenia, autoimmune liver diseases, Guillain-Barré syndrome, IgA nephropathy, rheumatoid arthritis and systemic lupus erythematosus). Molecular mimicry, the production of particular autoantibodies and the role of certain vaccine adjuvants seem to be substantial contributors to autoimmune phenomena. However, whether the association between COVID-19 vaccine and autoimmune manifestations is coincidental or causal remains to be elucidated. Here, we summarize the emerging evidence about autoimmune manifestations occurring in response to certain COVID-19 vaccines. Although information pertaining to the risk of autoimmune disease as a consequence of vaccination is controversial, we merely propose our current understanding of autoimmune manifestations associated with COVID-19 vaccine. In fact, we do not aim to disavow the overwhelming benefits of mass COVID-19 vaccination in preventing COVID-19 morbidity and mortality. These reports could help guide clinical assessment and management of autoimmune manifestations after COVID-19 vaccination.

The quality evaluation of hawthorn leaves in different geographical regions derived from the dried leaves of Crataegus pinnatifida Bge. Var. Major N.E.Br. or Crataegus pinnatifida Bge., a common blood-activating and stasis-eliminating traditional Chinese medicine, has hardly been reported. In this study, the chemical comparison of 40 batches of hawthorn leaf samples collected from Hebei, Liaoning, Shandong and Shanxi Provinces was performed using an ultra-high performance liquid chromatography with electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry-based metabolic profile and pattern recognition analysis approach. A total of 233 compounds were determined. Among them, 40 compounds were selected as potential metabolites responsible for the differential clustering, and the differential metabolite-based evaluation model was applied to well distinguish the origin of seven batches of hawthorn leaves sold on the market. Further analysis of the KEGG pathway showed that five core metabolites containing flavonoids and lignins were mainly involved in flavonoid biosynthesis, flavone and flavonol biosynthesis, and stilbenoid, diarylheptanoid and gingerol biosynthesis. Taking the content of flavonoids, core markers, as the evaluation basis, it was found that the quality of hawthorn leaves in Hebei and Liaoning was better. The study provides a reference for the rational utilization of hawthorn leaves, and highlights that the metabolomics-driven analysis method is more suitable for the quality evaluation of traditional Chinese medicine.

Dickkopf-1 (DKK-1) is mostly known as a mature inhibitor of classic Wnt signaling pathways, which plays a critically role in regulating bone formation and bone metastasis. In recent years, the roles of DKK-1 played in bone resorption, bone formation, immune homeostasis and inflammation have been investigated. The role of DKK-1 in the pathogenesis and treatment of autoimmune diseases (ADs), including rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), etc, has attracted widespread attention. Various studies have found that DKK-1 may be used as a biomarker for the occurrence and development of ADs, and as a potential target for the treatment of ADs. In this review, we have briefly summed up the intricate immunological functions and regulatory mechanisms of DKK-1 in ADs, aiming to further learning more about the role of DKK-1 involved in the pathogenesis of ADs and provide an outlook for the potential future researches.

Autoimmune diseases (ADs) are a broad range of disorders which are characterized by long-term inflammation and tissue damage arising from an immune response against one's own tissues. It is now widely accepted that the causes of ADs include environmental factors, genetic susceptibility and immune dysregulation. However, the exact etiology of ADs has not been fully elucidated to date. Because observational studies are plagued by confounding factors and reverse causality, no firm conclusions can be drawn about the etiology of ADs. Over the years, Mendelian randomization (MR) analysis has come into focus, offering unique perspectives and insights into the etiology of ADs and promising the discovery of potential therapeutic interventions. In MR analysis, genetic variation (alleles are randomly dispensed during meiosis, usually irrespective of environmental or lifestyle factors) is used instead of modifiable exposure to explore the link between exposure factors and disease or other outcomes. Therefore, MR analysis can provide a valuable method for exploring the causal relationship between different risk factors and ADs when its inherent assumptions and limitations are fully considered. This review summarized the recent findings of MR in major ADs, including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), multiple sclerosis (MS), and type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM), focused on the effects of different risk factors on ADs risks. In addition, we also discussed the opportunities and challenges of MR methods in ADs research.

Meteorological variables are regarded as risk factors for inflammatory diseases, but their associations with uveitis, one of the leading causes accounting for blindness worldwide with an estimated prevalence of 38-714 cases/100,000 person-years, have not been thoroughly investigated. The present study explored the short-term association between meteorological variables and hospital admissions for uveitis in Hefei City, China. Daily data on uveitis hospital admissions and meteorological variables including mean temperature (MT) (°C), diurnal temperature range (DTR) (°C), and relative humidity (RH) (%), from 2014 to 2020, were collected. A time-series study using generalized linear model combined with distributed lag non-linear model was applied. Totally, 1911 admissions for uveitis including 894 first admissions and 1017 readmissions were reported during the study period. The associations of high percentile of MT (75th, 24.5℃) and low percentile of DTR (25th, 5.4℃) with uveitis admissions were observed to be statistically significant from lag9 (RR = 1.041, 95%CI: 1.002-1.081) to lag11 (RR = 1.053, 95%CI: 1.003-1.104) and lag4 (RR = 1.053, 95%CI: 1.019-1.088) to lag5 (RR = 1.052, 95%CI: 1.020-1.085), respectively. Moreover, a significant association between low percentile of RH (1th, 44%) and uveitis admissions appeared at lag0-8 (RR = 1.869, 95%CI: 1.017-3.434) and lasted until lag0-13 (RR = 2.539, 95%CI: 1.102-5.850) in the cumulative lag structure. Subgroup analyses indicated that males and the young seemed to be more sensitive to high MT exposure, while females appeared to be more vulnerable to low DTR exposure. Interestingly, both the young and the elderly are susceptible to low DTR and low RH exposure. Furthermore, high MT and low DTR exposure were associated with increased risk of first admission for uveitis. In summary, exposure to high-value of MT and low-value of DTR and RH may increase the hospital admissions for uveitis, especially for the status of first admission.

LncRNAs are potential biomarkers for SLE, but the epigenetic regulatory mechanisms of N6-methyladenosine (m6A) modification in SLE remain largely unclear.In this study, we established m6A modification profile and investigated the potential roles of m6A-related lncRNAs in SLE. The m6A modification profile of SLE was established using MeRIP-seq. Four potential m6A related-lncRNAs (linc02446, linc01410, Xist, and PSMB8-AS1) were selected for validation using qRT-PCR, and their expression and association with clinical characteristics with SLE were evaluated.Overall, m6A level was lower in patients with SLE than in controls. Compared with controls, the expression of the two m6A related-lncRNAs (Xist and PSMB8-AS1) was downregulated in patients with SLE (all P0.05); the linc02446 was up-regulated in PBMCs of patients with SLE (Z=-2.738, P = 0.006), while it was not differentially expressed in T cells (Z=-0.387, P = 0.699). No significant alteration in linc01410 expression was observed in patients (Z=-0.940, P = 0.347). The lower expression levels of Xist and PSMB8-AS1 were associated with many clinical manifestations in patients with SLE (all P0.05). Additionally, mRNAs co-expressed with m6A related-lncRNAs (Xist, linc02446, and PSMB8-AS1) also participated in SLE.These results suggest that m6A methylation and m6A related-lncRNAs might be involved in the pathogenesis of SLE. Thus, our findings provide some clues on the potential function of lncRNAs that m6A modification may target in novel therapeutic or diagnostic strategies for SLE.

Previous studies concerning the circulating interleukin-17 (IL-17) in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) were contradictory.To further precisely investigate circulating IL-17 in SLE and evaluate its influential factors by meta-analysis.EMBASE, PubMed and Cochrane Library were comprehensively searched to obtain studies on circulating IL-17 in SLE patients by November 22, 2018. The results were illustrated by pooled standard mean difference (SMD) with corresponding 95% confidence interval (CI) using random-effects model as there was significant heterogeneity, which was estimated using CochranOverall, 1872 articles were reviewed and 20 studies involving 1067 subjects with SLE and 721 healthy controls (HCs) were enrolled in the final analysis according to inclusion criteria. Compared with HCs, circulating IL-17 levels in SLE patients were elevated (SMD: 1.183, 95% CI: 0.763-1.603;SLE patients have higher circulating IL-17 levels, which is influenced by ethnic, age and disease duration, literature quality and measurements.

Introduction: Autoimmune diseases (ADs) are idiopathic and heterogeneous disorders with contentious pathophysiology. Great strides have been made in epigenetics and its involvement in ADs. Zeste homolog 2 (EZH2) has sparked extensive interest because of its pleiotropic roles in distinct pathologic contexts.Areas covered: This review summarizes the epigenetic functions and the biological significance of EZH2 in the etiology of rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), type 1 diabetes (T1D), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), multiple sclerosis (MS), and systemic sclerosis (SSc). A brief recapitulation of the therapeutic potential of EZH2 targeting is provided.Expert opinion: There are questions marks and controversies surrounding the feasibility and safety of EZH2 targeting; it is recommended in RA and SLE, but queried in T1D, IBD, MS, and SSc. Future work should focus on contrast studies, systematic analyses and preclinical studies with optimizing methodologies. Selective research studies conducted in a stage-dependent manner are necessary because of the relapsing-remitting clinical paradigms.

Background and Objectives: The 3’ repair exonuclease 1 (TREX1) gene is the major DNA-specific 3’–5 ’exonuclease of mammalian cells which reduces single- and double-stranded DNA (ssDNA and dsDNA) to prevent undue immune activation mediated by the nucleic acid. TREX1 is also a crucial suppressor of selfrecognition that protects the host from inappropriate autoimmune activations. It has been revealed that TREX1 function is necessary to prevent host DNA accumulating after cell death which could actuate an autoimmune response. In the manuscript, we will discuss in detail the latest advancement to study the role of TREX1 in autoimmune disease. Methods: As a pivotal cytoprotective, antioxidant, anti-apoptotic, immunosuppressive, as well as an antiinflammatory molecule, the functional mechanisms of TREX1 were multifactorial. In this review, we will briefly summarize the latest advancement in studying the role of TREX1 in autoimmune disease, and discuss its potential as a therapeutic target for these diseases. Results: Deficiency of TREX1 in human patients and murine models is characterized by systemic inflammation and the disorder of TREX1 functions drives inflammatory responses leading to autoimmune disease. Moreover, much more studies revealed that mutations in TREX1 have been associated with a range of autoimmune disorders. But it is also unclear whether the mutations of TREX1 play a causal role in the disease progression, and whether manipulation of TREX1 has a beneficial effect in the treatment of autoimmune diseases. Conclusion: Integration of functional TREX1 biology into autoimmune diseases may further deepen our understanding of the development and pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases and provide new clues and evidence for the treatment of autoimmune diseases.

BACKGROUND Hospitalizations in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) have been reported from different regions in the world. This study aimed to evaluate the annual hospitalization rate, causes of hospitalization, and potential factors associated with frequency of hospitalization in Chinese patients. MATERIAL AND METHODS We performed an ambispective cohort study for hospitalized patients with SLE in a Chinese single center. Data on demographics, organ involvements, laboratory abnormities, clinical treatments, causes of hospitalization, and survival outcomes were recorded at the time of SLE diagnosis and during a follow-up period. Poisson regression models were created to identify the potential factors associated with frequency of hospitalization. RESULTS Of 526 patients with SLE, 242 patients (46%) had 1 or more admissions amounting to a total of 449 times during a median follow-up period of 4.73 years. The annual hospitalization rate was 18% and death occurred in 2.5% of total admissions. SLE flare, infection and pregnancy-related morbidity were the most common causes of hospitalization. Besides, the multivariate Poisson regression analysis revealed that decreased albumin, decreased renal function, and high disease damage were the risk factors for more frequency of hospitalization, whereas positive anti-SSA antibody and use of hydroxychloroquine were protective factors. CONCLUSIONS Nearly half of patients (46%) with SLE experience 1 or more hospitalizations, mainly due to SLE flare, infection, and pregnancy-related morbidity. Lupus patients with decreased albumin, decreased renal function, and high disease damage are more susceptible to have frequent hospitalization.

Objective Although patients with psoriasis frequently report seasonal changes in their symptoms, the seasonality of psoriasis has rarely been explored. This study aims to investigate the seasonal pattern of and global public interest in psoriasis using Google search data. Methods Internet search data were collected from Google Trends. Data on the relative search volume (RSV) from January 2004 to December 2018 were retrieved using the term psoriasis. Cosinor analyses were conducted to examine the seasonality of psoriasis using data from two southern hemisphere countries (Australia and New Zealand) and four northern hemisphere countries (USA, Canada, UK and Ireland). Results Overall, searches for psoriasis steadily decreased between 2004 and 2010, and then rose from 2011 to 2018. On cosinor analyses, RSV of ‘psoriasis’ displayed a significant seasonal variation worldwide (p Conclusion There was a significant seasonal pattern for psoriasis, with peaks in the late winter/early spring and troughs in the late summer/early autumn. Further studies are warranted to confirm the seasonal pattern of psoriasis using clinical data and to explore the underlying mechanisms.

Aim: To derive a precise estimation on plasma/serum level of SOD, GPx, CAT and GSH levels in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients. Methods: A total of 36 articles from electronic databases were finally included with 1120 SLE patients and 1024 healthy controls considered for antioxidant levels. The indicators for measuring vitamin D are various, and 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) is considered as the optimal indicator of total vitamin D levels. In this study, we aim to deeply explore the 25(OH)D status in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients, and evaluate its relation to SLE risk and disease severity.Literature about 25(OH)D status and its associations with SLE were searched in Pubmed, Embase and Cochrane Library databases. Standardized mean difference (SMD), odds ratio (OR) and corresponding 95% confidence interval (95% CI) were illustrated by forest plots, and correlation coefficients (r) were combined by generic inverse variance method. Heterogeneity and publication bias were quantified by I-squared (INineteen articles were included into our meta-analysis. The overall results showed that compared with the healthy controls, the circulating 25(OH)D levels were significantly lower in SLE patients (pooled SMD = -1.63, 95% CI: -2.51 to -0.76). Subgroup analysis revealed that compared with the healthy controls, SLE patients of Systemic Lupus Erythematosus Disease Activity Index (SLEDAI) ≥ 10, Arab and European ethnicity, all 4 seasons, no vitamin D supplement, had significantly lower circulating 25(OH)D levels; no significant differences were observed in SLE patients of SLEDAI 10, mixed ethnicity, spring, summer, vitamin D supplement, respectively; no matter the changes of age, disease duration, and the therapy of corticosteroid or immunosuppressive or neither, circulating 25(OH)D levels were significantly reduced in SLE patients. The deficiency, insufficiency and sufficiency of vitamin D could significantly elevate, slightly decrease (not significantly), significantly decrease SLE risk, respectively (pooled OR = 4.37, 95% CI: 1.49 to 12.84; pooled OR = 0.52, 95% CI: 0.22 to 1.26; pooled OR = 0.31, 95% CI: 0.15 to 0.63). Circulating 25(OH)D levels were inversely associated with SLEDAI (pooled correlation coefficient = -0.50, 95% CI: -0.8278 to -0.1689).Compared with healthy controls, 25(OH)D levels are significantly lower in SLE patients, which is influenced by disease activity, ethnicity, seasons and vitamin D supplement; no matter the change of age, diseases duration and therapy of corticosteroid or immunosuppressive or neither, 25(OH)D levels are significantly decreased in SLE patients; the deficiency, insufficiency and sufficiency of vitamin D could significantly elevate, slightly decrease, and significantly decrease SLE risk, respectively; and 25(OH)D levels inversely correlate with SLEDAI.

Autoimmune diseases are a broad spectrum of disorders involved in the imbalance of T-cell subsets, in which interplay or interaction of Th1, Th17 and Tregs are most important, resulting in prolonged inflammation and subsequent tissue damage. Pathogenic Th1 and Th17 cells can secrete signature proinflammatory cytokines, including interferon (IFN)-γ and IL-17, however Tregs can suppress effector cells and dampen a wide spectrum of immune responses. Melatonin (MLT) can regulate the humoral and cellular immune responses, as well as cell proliferation and immune mediators. Treatment with MLT directly interferes with T cell differentiation, controls the balance between pathogenic and regulatory T cells and regulates inflammatory cytokine release. MLT can promote the differentiation of type 1 regulatory T cells via extracellular signal regulated kinase 1/2 (Erk1/2) and retinoic acid-related orphan receptor-α (ROR-α) and suppress the differentiation of Th17 cells via the inhibition of ROR-γt and ROR-α expression through NFIL3. Moreover, MLT inhibits NF-κB signaling pathway to reduce TNF-α and IL-1β expression, promotes Nrf2 gene and protein expression to reduce oxidative and inflammatory states and regulates Bax and Bcl-2 to reduce apoptosis; all of which alleviate the development of autoimmune diseases. Thus, MLT can serve as a potential new therapeutic target, creating opportunities for the treatment of autoimmune diseases. This review aims to highlight recent advances in the role of MLT in several autoimmune diseases with particular focus given to novel signaling pathways involved in Th17 and Tregs as well as cell proliferation and apoptosis.

Autoimmune diseases (ADs) are a broad spectrum of disorders featured by the body's immune responses being directed against its own tissues, resulting in prolonged inflammation and subsequent tissue damage. Recently, the exposure to ambient air pollution has been implicated in the occurrence and development of ADs. Mechanisms linking air pollution exposures and ADs mainly include systemic inflammation, increased oxidative stress, epigenetic modifications induced by exposures and immune response caused by airway damage. The lung may be an autoimmunity initiation site in autoimmune diseases (ADs). Air pollutants can bind to the Aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) to regulate Th17 and Treg cells. Oxidative stress and inducible bronchus associated lymphoid tissue caused by the pollutants can influence T, B cells, resulting in the production of proinflammatory cytokines. These cytokines stimulate B cell and dendritic cells, resulting in a lot of antibodies and self-reactive T lymphocytes. Moreover, air pollutants may induce epigenetic changes to contribute to ADs. In this review, we will concern the associations between air pollution and immune-inflammatory responses, as well as mechanisms linking air pollution exposure and autoimmunity. In addition, we focus on the potential roles of air pollution in major autoimmune diseases including systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), multiple sclerosis (MS), and type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM).

Objective To evaluate the impact of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) on health-related quality of life (HRQoL) assessed with SF-36 and explore factors associated with HRQoL in SLE patients. Methods A random-effect meta-analysis was performed to calculate extracted data. Sensitivity and subgroup analyses were performed to distinguish sources of heterogeneity. Results A total of 36 articles were finally included in this meta-analysis, including 6510 patients. The pooled mean scores of SF-36 physical component summary and mental component summary were 46.10 (95% confidence interval (CI): 43.09–49.10) and 50.37 (95% CI: 47.78–52.87), respectively. Spearman's correlation analysis found that mean age, proportion of female participants, and publication decades were negatively associated with some of the SF-36 domains. Sample size and SLEDAI were positively associated with some of the SF-36 domains. Patients with SLE have lower HRQoL in comparison to the general population. Conclusions SLE has a significant impact on HRQoL, which proves that the necessity of improving HRQoL in SLE patients cannot be ignored. Measuring HRQoL should be considered as an indispensable part of the overall evaluation of health conditions of SLE patients.

OBJECTIVES The aim of this study is to investigate whether heat shock protein 70 (Hsp70) gene polymorphisms are implicated in systemic lupus erythematous (SLE) susceptibility, the efficacy of glucocorticoids (GCs) treatment, and improvement of health-related quality of life. METHODS A total of 499 SLE patients and 499 controls were included in a case-control study, and 468 SLE patients treated with GCs for 12 weeks were involved in a follow-up study. Patients who completed the 12-week follow-up were divided into GCs-sensitive and GCs-insensitive group by using the SLE disease activity index. The SF-36 was used to evaluate the health-related quality of life of SLE patients, and genotyping was performed by improved multiplex ligation detection reaction. RESULTS rs2075800 was associated with SLE susceptibility (adjusted odds ratio [ORadj], 1.437; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.113-1.855; Padj = 0.005; PBH = 0.020 by dominant model; ORadj, 1.602; 95% CI, 1.072-2.395; Padj = 0.022; PBH = 0.029 by TT vs CC model; ORadj = 1.396; 95% CI = 1.067-1.826; Padj = 0.015; PBH = 0.029 by TC vs CC model). In the follow-up study, rs2075799 was associated with the improvement in mental health (p = 0.004, PBH = 0.044), but we failed to find any association between the efficacy of GCs and Hsp70 gene polymorphisms. CONCLUSIONS Hsp70 gene polymorphisms may be associated with susceptibility to SLE and improvement of mental health in Chinese Han population.

Interleukin-13 (IL-13) was previously thought to be a redundant presence of IL-4, but in recent years its role in immunity, inflammation, fibrosis, and allergic diseases has become increasingly prominent. IL-13 can regulate several subtypes of T helper (Th) cells and affect their transformation, including Th1, Th2, T17, etc., thus it may play an important role in immune system. Previous studies have revealed that IL-13 is implicated in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases, such as systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic sclerosis (SSc), ulcerative colitis (UC), type 1 diabetes (T1D), sjogren's syndrome (SS), etc. In this review, we will briefly discuss the biological features of IL-13 and summarize recent advances in the role of IL-13 in the development and pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases. This information may provide new perspectives and suggestions for the selection of therapeutic targets for autoimmune diseases.

Cumulative evidence from observational studies showed an inverse association between smoking and osteoarthritis (OA), but this association could be confounded by obesity. This study aimed to decipher the causal effect of smoking on osteoarthritis risk from a genetically informed perspective.We performed a two-sample univariable and multivariable MR to evaluate the independent effect of smoking on OA risk. Summary-level data were obtained from the largest available genome-wide association studies (GWASs) of smoking initiation, body mass index (BMI) and OA. Chronic kidney disease (CKD), a global disease burden related to high rates of incidence and mortality, manifests as progressive and irretrievable nephron loss and decreased kidney regeneration capacity. Emerging studies have suggested that exposure to air pollution is closely relevant to increased risk of CKD, CKD progression and end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). Inhaled airborne particles may cause vascular injury, intraglomerular hypertension, or glomerulosclerosis through non-hemodynamic and hemodynamic factors with multiple complex interactions. The mechanisms linking air pollutants exposure to CKD include elevated blood pressure, worsening oxidative stress and inflammatory response, DNA damage and abnormal metabolic changes to aggravate kidney damage. In the present review, we will discuss the epidemiologic observations linking air pollutants exposure to the incidence and progression of CKD. Then, we elaborate the potential roles of several air pollutants including particulate matter and gaseous co-pollutants, environmental tobacco smoke, and gaseous heavy metals in its pathogenesis. Finally, this review outlines the latent effect of air pollution in ESKD patients undergoing dialysis or renal transplant, kidney cancer and other kidney diseases. The information obtained may be beneficial for further elucidating the pathogenesis of CKD and making proper preventive strategies for this disease.

Background: Recently, many studies have indicated the potential roles of vitamin D in rheumatoid arthritis (RA). In the present study, the published available GWAS summary data was used to perform two-sample Mendelian randomization (MR) to infer the causal effect between circulating vitamin D levels and RA risk.Methods: Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) which significantly associated with exposure were selected as instrumental variables from larger-scale genome-wide association study (GWAS). The robust analytical methods including MR Egger, inverse variance weighted (IVW), weighted median and weighted mode were conducted to infer the causal links. Results: The IVW method suggested that there was no causal relationship of genetically predicted circulating vitamin D on RA (Asian: odds ratio (OR)=0.911, 95% confidence interval (CI), 0.542-1.534, P=0.727; European: OR=0.897, 95% CI, 0.633-1.269, P=0.538). MR Egger (Asian: OR=0.937, 95% CI, 0.373-2.352, P=0.895; European: OR=0.853, 95% CI, 0.469-1.553, P=0.639), weighted median (Asian: OR=0.895, 95% CI, 0.499-1.606, P=0.711; European: OR=0.885, 95% CI, 0.620-1.264, P=0.503) and weighted mode (Asian: OR=0.904, 95% CI, 0.515-1.588, P=0.738; European: OR=0.898, 95% CI, 0.618-1.306, P=0.604) demonstrated that vitamin D was not directly related to RA as well. Conclusions: The MR analysis indicates that there is no evidence of causal effect of genetically predicted circulating vitamin D levels on RA risk.

Virus infection can alter immune regulatory activity, and thus may be involved in the occurrence of autoimmune diseases. Recently, the pandemic of COVID-19 has posed a huge threat to public health and emerging evidence suggests that coronavirus may be implicated in the development and pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases. However, how coronavirus infection impacts the risk of autoimmune disease remains largely unknown. In this review, we focused on the association between coronavirus and autoimmunity, and elucidated the molecular mechanisms linking coronavirus exposure to autoimmunity. Additionally, we briefly introduced the role that coronavirus plays in several autoimmune diseases including multiple sclerosis (MS), rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), and idiopathicthrombocytopenic purpura (ITP).

This study aimed to investigate the seroreactivity of Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccination and its adverse events among systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients, rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients, and healthy controls (HCs).A total of 60 SLE patients, 70 RA patients and 35 HCs, who received a complete inactivated COVID-19 vaccine (Vero cells) regimen, were recruited in the current study. Serum IgG and IgM antibodies against Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) were determined by using chemiluminescent microparticle immunoassay (CMIA).There were no significant differences regarding the seroprevalences of IgG and IgM antibodies against SARS-CoV-2, and the self-reported vaccination-related adverse events among SLE patients, RA patients and HCs. The inactivated COVID-19 vaccines appeared to be well-tolerated and moderately immunogenic. In addition, case-only analysis indicated that in SLE patients, the disease manifestation of rash and anti-SSA autoantibody were associated with seroprevalence of IgG antibody against SARS-CoV-2, whereas the uses of ciclosporin and leflunomide had influence on the seroprevalence of IgM antibody against SARS-CoV-2. In RA patients, rheumatoid factor (RF) appeared to be associated with the seroprevalence of IgG antibody against SARS-CoV-2.Our study reveals that the seroprevalences of IgG and IgM antibodies against SARS-CoV-2 and vaccination-related adverse effects are similar among SLE, RA and HCs, suggesting that COVID-19 vaccine is safe and effective for SLE and RA patients to prevent from the pandemic of COVID-19.

Influenza is an acute respiratory disease that seriously threatens public health. The occurrence of influenza has been proved to be related to a variety of meteorological factors. However, less attention has been paid to the effect of relative humidity (RH) on different types of influenza, especially in subtropical regions. Daily data on laboratory-confirmed influenza cases, weather variables, and air pollutants in Hefei covering the 2014-2019 period were collected. The seasonality and trend of daily influenza cases were explored by the time series seasonal decomposition method. Generalized linear model was fitted in conjunction with distributed lag nonlinear model to quantify the associations of RH with influenza A and influenza B. Subgroup analyses were conducted by sex, age (0-4, 5-17, and ≥18 years), and season (cold and warm seasons). A total of 5238 influenza cases including 2847 influenza A cases and 2391 influenza B cases were recorded. The epidemic of influenza presented a distinct seasonal pattern, and the number of daily influenza cases increased steadily since 2016. High RH was related to an increased risk of influenza A (maximum RR = 1.683, 95%CI: 1.365-2.076), especially among males, females, and school-age children. Low RH was associated with an increased risk of influenza B (maximum RR = 1.252, 95%CI: 1.169-1.340). The contrasting relationships of RH with influenza A and B remained significant in cold seasons. High RH and low RH were significantly associated with the increased risk of influenza A and B, respectively. The findings of our study may provide clues for proposing new effective interventions.

There is a growing body of evidence suggesting an association between air pollution exposure and tuberculosis (TB) incidence, but no meta-analysis has assembled all evidence so far. This review and meta-analysis aimed to derive a more reliable estimation on the association between air pollution and TB incidence. PubMed, Embase and Web of Science electronic databases were systemically searched for eligible literature. The PECO framework was used to form the eligibility criteria. Effect estimates and 95% confidence intervals (CIs) published in the included studies were pooled quantitatively. Seventeen articles met the inclusion criteria. The pooled estimates showed that long-term exposure to particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter ≤10 μm (PM10) was associated with increased incidence of TB (per 10 μg/m3 increase in concentrations of PM10: risk ratios (RR) = 1.058, 95% CI: 1.021–1.095). Besides, long-term exposure to sulfur dioxide (SO2) and nitrogen dioxide (NO2) were significantly associated with TB incidence (per 1 ppb increase, SO2: RR = 1.016, 95% CI: 1.001–1.031; NO2: 1.010, 95% CI: 1.002–1.017). We did not find a significant association of PM2.5, ozone (O3) or carbon monoxide (CO) with TB risk, regardless of long-term or short-term exposure. However, in view of the 2016 ASA Statement and the biological plausibility of PM2.5 damaging host immunity, the association between PM2.5 and TB risk remains to be further established. This meta-analysis shows that long-term exposure to PM10, SO2 or NO2 is associated with increased odds of TB, and the specific biological mechanisms warrant further research.

The Ets transcription factor family exerts crucial role in cell proliferation, apoptosis, differentiation and migration. Friend leukemia integration 1 (Fli1), a member of the Ets family, is expressed in fibroblasts, endothelial cells and immune cells. Fli1 gene is participated in the development, proliferation, activation, migration and other processes of immune cells. Fli1 can also affect the function of immune cells by regulating cytokines and chemokines. Emerging evidence has shown that Fli1 is implicated in the etiology of several autoimmune diseases, including systemic sclerosis (SSc) and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). In this review, we mainly discuss the current evidence for the role of Fli1 in these diseases.

Currently, the correlation between ambient temperature and systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) hospital admissions remains not determined. The aim of this study was to explore the correlation between ambient temperature and SLE hospital admissions in Hefei City, China. An ecological study design was adopted. Daily data on SLE hospital admissions in Hefei City, from January 1, 2007, to December 31, 2017, were obtained from the two largest tertiary hospitals in Hefei, and the daily meteorological data at the same period were retrieved from China Meteorological Data Network. The generalized additive model (GAM) combined with distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM) with Poisson link was applied to evaluate the influence of ambient temperature on SLE hospital admissions after controlling for potential confounding factors, including seasonality, relative humidity, day of week, and long-term trend. There were 1658 SLE hospital admissions from 2007 to 2017, including 370 first admissions and 1192 re-admissions (there were 96 admissions with admission status not stated). No correlation was observed between ambient temperature and SLE first admissions, but a correlation was found between low ambient temperature and SLE re-admissions (RR: 2.53, 95% CI: 1.11, 5.77) (3.5 °C vs 21 °C). The effect of ambient temperature on SLE re-admissions remained for 2 weeks but disappeared in 3 weeks. Exposure to low ambient temperature may increase hospital re-admissions for SLE, and thus it is important for SLE patients to maintain a warm living environment and avoid exposure to lower ambient temperature.

This study provides a comprehensive and updated review of the literature with respect to the relationship between physical activity and depression in older adults. The evidence from both observational studies and experimental studies are collected to present a discussion on the type and dose of physical activity, as well as the underlying mechanisms of physical activity and depression in older adults. Overall, the results from previous studies support a solid inverse relationship between physical activity and depression in older adults, while the dose-effect relationship between them, as well as different effects among different types of physical activities, remains largely unexplored. Depression in older adults is related to an array of negative health outcomes and is more chronic compared to that in younger adults. Physical activity has been regarded as a promising non-pharmaceutical method in treating and preventing depression in older adults. Further experimental work and research need to be done to develop theoretically grounded and evidence-based interventions to better advance our knowledge of this topic and effectively promote physical activity in older adults.

Introduction The present study aimed to investigate the prevalence and influential factors of thrombocytopaenia in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients among the Chinese population in order to provide evidence for improving the treatment and nursing of SLE patients. Methods A retrospective analysis of 3140 SLE patients admitted to two large tertiary hospitals was conducted in Anhui, China, from 2011 to 2018. In addition, the influential factors related to SLE with thrombocytopaenia were analysed through univariate and multivariate analysis. Results A total of 804 SLE patients had thrombocytopaenia (25.6%). The top 5 clinical manifestations of SLE inpatients were proteinuria (51.0%), lupus nephritis (45.9%), new rash (38.4%), haematuria (36.7%) and pyuria (32.2%). The incidence of neurological manifestations, oral mucosal ulceration, pleurisy, pericarditis, hyperglycaemia, leucocytopaenia, urinary casts, haematuria, pyuria and high disease activity in the thrombocytopaenia group were higher than those in the non-thrombocytopaenia group ( p 15.30 seconds (OR = 1.479, p = 0.032), activated partial thromboplatin time >45 seconds (OR = 1.924, p 21 seconds (OR = 1.629, p = 0.015) were associated with thrombocytopaenia. Conclusion Thrombocytopaenia has a high prevalence in SLE patients and is related to some baseline, clinical and laboratory characteristics, affecting multiple organs and systems.

Background Recently, increasing studies have revealed that leptin is involved in the development of rheumatoid arthritis (RA). This study is aimed at exploring the association of leptin gene single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with susceptibility to RA in a Chinese population. Methods We recruited 600 RA patients and 600 healthy controls from a Chinese population and analyzed their three leptin SNPs (rs10244329, rs2071045, and rs2167270) using the improved Multiplex Ligase Detection Reaction (iMLDR) assays. The associations of these SNPs with clinical manifestations of RA were also analyzed. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was performed for plasma leptin determination. Results No significant difference in either allele or genotype frequencies of these three SNPs between RA patients and healthy controls was observed (all P > 0.05). Association between the genotype effects of dominant, recessive models was also not found (all P > 0.05). No significant difference in plasma leptin levels was detected between RA patients and controls (P > 0.05). Conclusion Leptin gene (rs10244329, rs2071045, and rs2167270) polymorphisms are not associated with RA genetic susceptibility and its clinical features in the Chinese population.

ObjectiveThis study aimed to assess systematically the overall diagnostic value of urinary monocyte chemoattractant protein-1 (uMCP-1) in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients with active lupus nephritis (LN).MethodsArticles from PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE and Cochrane Library were retrieved up to 5 November 2019. Study quality was evaluated using the Quality Assessment of Diagnostic Accuracy Studies-2 tool, and statistical analyses were performed.ResultsA total of seven original studies with 521 participants were included in this meta-analysis. The summary estimates were: sensitivity 0.89 (95% confidence interval (CI) 0.86–0.93), specificity 0.63 (95% CI 0.55–0.69), positive likelihood ratio 2.16 (95% CI 1.66–2.80), negative likelihood ratio 0.15 (95% CI 0.08–0.30), diagnostic odds ratio 19.40 (95% CI 7.24–51.96) and area under the curve 0.9042.ConclusionAs a non-invasive biomarker, uMCP-1 has high diagnostic accuracy for active LN.

Pentraxin 3 (PTX3) is a prototypic humoral soluble pattern recognition molecule that exerts a pivotal role in innate immune response and inflammation, as well as in tissue damage and remodeling. Recently, emerging evidence has revealed that PTX3 is involved in the occurrence and development of various autoimmune diseases, such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA), systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), ankylosing spondylitis (AS), systemic sclerosis (SSc), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), multiple sclerosis (MS) and psoriasis, etc. In this review, we have succinctly summarized the complex immunological functions of PTX3 and mostly focused on recent findings of the pleiotropic activities played by PTX3 in the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases, aiming at hopefully offering possible future therapeutic alternatives.

BACKGROUND Prolactin (PRL), an inflammatory hormone with cytokine properties, has long been proposed to play a crucial role in the pathogenesis of autoimmune disorders, including rheumatoid arthritis (RA). However, the circulating levels of PRL in RA were discordant among published studies. METHODS PubMed, Embase, and The Cochrane Library database were systematically searched from inception up to 30 June 2018. The available studies were obtained from the initial search in accordance with the rigorous inclusion and exclusion criteria. Relevant data from the included literatures were extracted. Methodological quality was evaluated in order to refine the final search results. All statistical analyses were conducted using software STATA version 12.0. RESULTS Of 698 articles were yielded for eligibility, a finally analysis involving 628 RA cases and 430 controls from 14 published studies were included. It has been reported that circRNAs are diff ;erentially expressed in many diseases and can be used as new biomarker to facilitate disease diagnosis. Circular RNAs (circRNAs) microarray were used to identify dysregulated circRNAs in plasma of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients. Then, we confirmed the microarray data by quantitative reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) in both plasma and peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of SLE. One hundred and twelve circRNAs were identified to dysregulated expressed in plasma of SLE as compared to healthy controls. The results of qRT-PCR showed that the levels of hsa_circRNA_407176 and hsa_circRNA_001308 were decreased in both plasma and PBMCs of SLE when compared with healthy controls. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve area of hsa_circRNA_407176 and hsa_circRNA_001308 in plasma were 0.599 and 0.662, respectively. The area under the ROC curves of hsa_circRNA_407176, hsa_circRNA_406567 and hsa_circRNA_001308 in PBMCs were 0.806, 0.744, and 0.722, respectively. Our study illustrated that hsa_circRNA_407176 and hsa_circRNA_001308 in plasma and PBMCs could be potential biomarkers for SLE.

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), defined as ≥200 base pairs in length but have little translation potential, play a key role in imprinting control, immune cell differentiation, apoptosis and immune responses. Recently, many potential lncRNAs have been revealed to contribute to a new layer of molecular regulation of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Immune-related functional lncRNAs may serve as novel therapeutic targets and disease biomarkers to provide potential support for clinic treatment in this disease. In this review, we will briefly introduce the identification, biogenesis and functions of lncRNAs, and summarize recent advance in the role of lncRNAs in SLE.

Currently published data regarding the potential role of osteoprotegerin (OPG), osteocalcin (OCN) and osteopontin (OPN) for the discrimination between rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and osteoarthritis (OA) are contradictory. To derive a more precise evaluation, a meta-analysis was performed.Published literatures comparing plasma/serum OPG, OCN and OPN levels between RA group and OA controls were searched in PubMed, Embase and the Cochrane Library. The results showed that RA patients had higher plasma/serum OPN (pooled SMD = -2.57, 95% CI = -4.72 to -0.41) levels when compared to OA patients. No significant difference in plasma/serum OPG (pooled SMD = -0.29, 95% CI = -1.07‒0.49) and OCN (pooled SMD = -0.09, 95% CI = -0.48‒0.31) levels were found between RA patients and OA patients. Subgroup analysis indicated that plasma/serum OPG levels had no significant differences between RA patients and OA patients in Europe and Asian.Overall, there is no significant difference in circulating OPG and OCN levels between RA patients and OA patients. However, plasma/serum OPN level is significantly higher in RA patients compared with OA patients.

Background and Aims: Matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9) is closely related to the pathogenesis of autoimmune diseases, especially Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). However, published works about the circulating MMP-9 levels in SLE are contradictory. A meta-analysis was performed to estimate circulating MMP- 9 levels in SLE patients more accurately and explore its related influencing factors. Methods: The related literatures were systematically searched in PubMed, Embase, and The Cochrane Library database (up to 31 January 2018). Pooled Standardized Mean Difference (SMD) and 95% Confidence Interval (CI) of circulating MMP-9 levels were calculated by Stata12.0 software according to fixed-effect or randomeffect model analysis. Results: A total of 638 articles were retrieved, and 12 studies including 730 SLE cases and 759 controls were finally included in the meta-analysis. No significant differences in circulating MMP-9 levels were observed between SLE patients and healthy controls (pooled SMD = -0.209, 95% CI = -0.812 to 0.394). However, subgroup analyses indicated that age Conclusion: The meta-analysis of current evidence suggests that circulating MMP-9 levels do not differ between SLE patients and healthy controls, however, the results may be affected by age and sample size. Further studies are needed to clarify the relationship between SLE and circulating MMP-9 levels.

OBJECTIVE: Th17 cell and IL-17 mediated autoimmunity has been implicated in the development of organ damage in Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE). New evidence suggests that hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF-1α) enhances Th17 differentiation and promotes IL-17 production. However, the role of HIF-1α in the pathogenesis of lupus has not been examined. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of HIF-1α in lupus development. METHODS: Female lupus mice (MRL/lpr) received tail vein injections of HIF1α-shRNA or control treatments, and were sacrificed at 24h, 2 weeks, or 4 weeks after the administration. HIF-1α expression was measured in splenocytes and sera obtained from the mice. The proportion of Th17 cells in splenocytes and serum IL-17 level were determined. Urine protein, serum ANA and anti-dsDNA antibody levels were compared among the groups. We also scored renal pathology, IgG and C3 depositions in glomeruli. RESULTS: Administration of HIF1α-shRNA suppressed HIF-1α expression in lupus mice. The serum IL-17 level decreased significantly following the HIF-1α silencing. Decreased ANA level, reduced urinary protein concentrations, ameliorated pathological damage and remarkably reduced renal IgG and C3 depositions were also observed in HIF1α-shRNA treated group compared to those in the controls. CONCLUSION: Our results provide the first evidence for a role of HIF-1α in the pathogenesis of lupus and suggest a potential new therapeutic avenue for the treatment of lupus patients through reducing the HIF-1α level.

Postpartum depression is a common complication of childbearing and up to 12 months postpartum. This study aimed to determine the prevalence of postpartum depressive mood (PDM) in China by performing a meta-analysis of published studies. Studies that reported the prevalence of PDM in China were identified by searching the PubMed, Embase, CNKI, and CQVIP databases. Three thousand, one hundred, and two articles were obtained, and after careful evaluation, 26 studies were finally included in the meta-analysis. The combined studies included a total of 7618 cases with 1621 cases of PDM. The studies were assessed on the basis of heterogeneity testing and the potential for publication bias. Stata software 11.0 was used to perform the meta-analysis. The random-effect model showed that the prevalence of PDM was 21% with a 95% confidence interval (CI) of 17–25%. PDM was the highest 0 to 1.5 months after delivery. PDM levels decreased to 10.4% (95% CI 9.7–11.1%, P
