The 2022 Online Learning Consortium (OLC) Blended Learning Symposium was a response to the events of the past decade, such as an absence of a concerted blended learning program, the pandemic, flagging student interest in higher education, technology's explosive development, and pressures to reconsider what constitutes a responsive and effective university. Primarily, however, the symposium chronicled in this report is future-oriented, illustrating that long-held educational value systems need reconsideration. This work is a metaphoric Rosetta Stone codifying ideas of the most forward-thinking and thoughtful educators in the blended learning space. Learning independently offline or online is no longer a viable concept. The report makes it clear that interaction among learning spaces and people is the new blended paradigm.

Modern inelastic material model formulations rely on the use of tensor-valued internal variables. When inelastic phenomena include softening, simulations of the former are prone to localization. Thus, an accurate regularization of the tensor-valued internal variables is essential to obtain physically correct results. Here, we focus on the regularization of anisotropic damage at finite strains. Thus, a flexible anisotropic damage model with isotropic, kinematic, and distortional hardening is equipped with three gradient-extensions using a full and two reduced regularizations of the damage tensor. Theoretical and numerical comparisons of the three gradient-extensions yield excellent agreement between the full and the reduced regularization based on a volumetric-deviatoric regularization using only two nonlocal degrees of freedom.

The magnetic dipole transition strength $B(M1)$ of $^{48}$Ca is dominated by a single resonant state at an excitation energy of 10.23 MeV. Experiments disagree about $B(M1)$ and this impacts our understanding of spin flips in nuclei. We performed ab initio computations based on chiral effective field theory and found that $B(M1:0^+\rightarrow1^+)$ lies in the range from $7.0$ to $10.2~\mu_N^2$. This is consistent with a $(\gamma,n)$ experiment but larger than results from $(e,e^\prime)$ and $(p,p')$ scattering. Two-body currents yield no quenching of the $B(M1)$ strength and continuum effects reduce it by about 10%. Spinodal decomposition can improve a number of essential properties in materials, especially hardness. Yet, the theoretical prediction of the onset of this phenomenon (e.g., temperature) and its microstructure (e.g., wavelength) often requires input parameters coming from costly and time-consuming experimental efforts, hindering rational materials optimization. Here, we present a procedure where such parameters are not derived from experiments. First, we calculate the spinodal temperature by modeling nucleation in the solid solution while approaching the spinode boundary. Then, we compute the spinodal wavelength self-consistently using a few reasonable approximations. Our results show remarkable agreement with experiments and, for NiRh, the calculated yield strength due to spinodal microstructures surpasses even those of Ni-based superalloys. We believe that this procedure will accelerate the exploration of the complex materials experiencing spinodal decomposition, critical for their macroscopic properties., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

The Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) is one of the largest international astronomy organizations. We present demographic data based on surveys of its members from 2014, 2015 and 2016, during the fourth phase of SDSS (SDSS-IV). We find about half of SDSS-IV collaboration members were based in North America, a quarter in Europe, and the remainder in Asia and Central and South America. Overall, 26-36% are women (from 2014 to 2016), up to 2% report non-binary genders. 11-14% report that they are racial or ethnic minorities where they live. The fraction of women drops with seniority, and is also lower among collaboration leadership. Men in SDSS-IV were more likely to report being in a leadership role, and for the role to be funded and formally recognized. SDSS-IV collaboration members are twice as likely to have a parent with a college degree, than the general population, and are ten times more likely to have a parent with a PhD. This trend is slightly enhanced for female collaboration members. Despite this, the fraction of first generation college students (FGCS) is significant (31%). This fraction increased among collaboration members who are racial or ethnic minorities (40-50%), and decreased among women (15-25%). SDSS-IV implemented many inclusive policies and established a dedicated committee, the Committee on INclusiveness in SDSS (COINS). More than 60% of the collaboration agree that the collaboration is inclusive; however, collaboration leadership more strongly agree with this than the general membership. In this paper, we explain these results in full, including the history of inclusive efforts in SDSS-IV. We conclude with a list of suggested recommendations based on our findings, which can be used to improve equity and inclusion in large astronomical collaborations, which we argue is not only moral, but will also optimize their scientific output., Comment: 30 pages, 9 figures, accepted in PASP

Nature has always been our inspiration in the research, design and development of materials and has driven us to gain a deep understanding of the mechanisms that characterize anisotropy and inelastic behavior. All this knowledge has been accumulated in the principles of thermodynamics. Deduced from these principles, the multiplicative decomposition combined with pseudo potentials are powerful and universal concepts. Simultaneously, the tremendous increase in computational performance enabled us to investigate and rethink our history-dependent material models to make the most of our predictions. Today, we have reached a point where materials and their models are becoming increasingly sophisticated. This raises the question: How do we find the best model that includes all inelastic effects to explain our complex data? Constitutive Artificial Neural Networks (CANN) may answer this question. Here, we extend the CANNs to inelastic materials (iCANN). Rigorous considerations of objectivity, rigid motion of the reference configuration, multiplicative decomposition and its inherent non-uniqueness, restrictions of energy and pseudo potential, and consistent evolution guide us towards the architecture of the iCANN satisfying thermodynamics per design. We combine feed-forward networks of the free energy and pseudo potential with a recurrent neural network approach to take time dependencies into account. We demonstrate that the iCANN is capable of autonomously discovering models for artificially generated data, the response of polymers for cyclic loading and the relaxation behavior of muscle data. As the design of the network is not limited to visco-elasticity, our vision is that the iCANN will reveal to us new ways to find the various inelastic phenomena hidden in the data and to understand their interaction. Recent advances in large language models have enabled the development of viable generative retrieval systems. Instead of a traditional document ranking, generative retrieval systems often directly return a grounded generated text as a response to a query. Quantifying the utility of the textual responses is essential for appropriately evaluating such generative ad hoc retrieval. Yet, the established evaluation methodology for ranking-based ad hoc retrieval is not suited for the reliable and reproducible evaluation of generated responses. To lay a foundation for developing new evaluation methods for generative retrieval systems, we survey the relevant literature from the fields of information retrieval and natural language processing, identify search tasks and system architectures in generative retrieval, develop a new user model, and study its operationalization., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, 1 table. Optical circular polarization observations can directly test the particle composition in black holes jets. Here we report on the first observations of the BL Lac type object S4 0954+65 in high linear polarized states. While no circular polarization was detected, we were able to place upper limits of <0.5% at the 99.7% confidence. Using a simple model and our novel optical circular polarization observations we can constrain the allowed parameter space for the magnetic field strength and composition of the emitting particles. Our results favor models that require magnetic field strengths of only a few Gauss and models where the jet composition is dominated by electron-positron pairs. We study the optical flux and polarization variability of the binary black hole blazar OJ 287 using quasi-simultaneous observations from 2015 to 2023 carried out using telescopes in the USA, Japan, Russia, Crimea, and Bulgaria. This is one of the most extensive quasi-simultaneous optical flux and polarization variability studies of OJ 287. OJ 287 showed large amplitude, ~3.0 mag flux variability, large changes of ~37% in degree of polarization, and a large swing of ~215 degrees in the angle of the electric vector of polarization. During the period of observation, several flares in flux were detected. Those flares are correlated with a rapid increase in the degree of polarization and swings in electric vector of polarization angle. A peculiar behavior of anticorrelation between flux and polarization degree, accompanied by a nearly constant polarization angle, was detected from JD 2,458,156 to JD 2,458,292. Context. Blazar AO 0235+164, located at redshift z = 0.94, has undergone several sharp multi-spectral-range flaring episodes during the last decades. In particular, the episodes peaking in 2008 and 2015, that received extensive multi-wavelength coverage, exhibited interesting behavior. Aims. We study the actual origin of these two observed flares by constraining the properties of the observed photo-polarimetric variability, those of the broad-band spectral energy-distribution and the observed time-evolution behavior of the source as seen by ultra-high resolution total-flux and polarimetric Very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) imaging. Methods. The analysis of VLBI images allows us to constrain kinematic and geometrical parameters of the 7 mm jet. We use the Discrete Correlation Function to compute the statistical correlation and the delays between emission at different spectral ranges. Multi-epoch modeling of the spectral energy distributions allows us to propose specific models of emission; in particular for the unusual spectral features observed in this source in the X-ray region of the spectrum during strong multi spectral-range flares. Results. We find that these X-ray spectral features can be explained by an emission component originating in a separate particle distribution than the one responsible for the two standard blazar bumps. This is in agreement with the results of our correlation analysis that do not find a strong correlation between the X-rays and the remaining spectral ranges. We find that both external Compton dominated and synchrotron self-Compton dominated models can explain the observed spectral energy distributions. However, synchrotron self-Compton models are strongly favored by the delays and geometrical parameters inferred from the observations.

[Abridged] The X-ray broadband spectra of the bare AGN Mrk 110, obtained by simultaneous XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations (Nov 2019 and April 2020), are characterised by the presence of a prominent and absorption-free smooth soft X-ray excess, moderately broad OVII and Fe Kalpha emission lines, and a lack of a strong Compton hump. While relativistic reflection as the sole emission is ruled out, a simplified combination of soft and hard Comptonisation from a warm and a hot coronae, plus mild relativistic disc reflection reproduces the data very well. We aim to confirm the physical origin of the soft X-ray excess of Mrk 110 and to determine its disc-corona system properties from its energetics using two new sophisticated models: reXcor and relagn, respectively. At both epochs, the inferred high-values of the warm-corona heating from the X-ray broadband spectral analysis using reXcor confirm that the soft X-ray excess originates mainly from a warm corona rather than relativistic reflection. The intrinsic best-fit SED determined at both epochs using relagn show a high X-ray contribution relative to the UV and are very well reproduced by a warm and hot coronae plus mild relativistic reflection. The outer radii of the hot and warm coronae are located at a few 10s and ~100 Rg, respectively. Moreover, combining the inferred low Eddington ratio (~ a few %) from this work, and previous multi-wavelength spectral and timing studies suggests that Mrk 110 could be classified as a moderate changing-state AGN. Our analysis confirms the existence of a warm corona as a significant contribution to the soft X-ray excess and UV emission in Mrk 110, adding to growing evidence that AGN accretion deviates from standard disc theory. Introduction: Photogrammetric surface scans provide a radiation-free option to assess and classify craniosynostosis. Due to the low prevalence of craniosynostosis and high patient restrictions, clinical data is rare. Synthetic data could support or even replace clinical data for the classification of craniosynostosis, but this has never been studied systematically. Methods: We test the combinations of three different synthetic data sources: a statistical shape model (SSM), a generative adversarial network (GAN), and image-based principal component analysis for a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based classification of craniosynostosis. The CNN is trained only on synthetic data, but validated and tested on clinical data. Results: The combination of a SSM and a GAN achieved an accuracy of more than 0.96 and a F1-score of more than 0.95 on the unseen test set. The difference to training on clinical data was smaller than 0.01. Including a second image modality improved classification performance for all data sources. Conclusion: Without a single clinical training sample, a CNN was able to classify head deformities as accurate as if it was trained on clinical data. Using multiple data sources was key for a good classification based on synthetic data alone. Synthetic data might play an important future role in the assessment of craniosynostosis.

We propose a Perceiver-based sequence classifier to detect abnormalities in speech reflective of several neurological disorders. We combine this classifier with a Universal Speech Model (USM) that is trained (unsupervised) on 12 million hours of diverse audio recordings. Our model compresses long sequences into a small set of class-specific latent representations and a factorized projection is used to predict different attributes of the disordered input speech. The benefit of our approach is that it allows us to model different regions of the input for different classes and is at the same time data efficient. We evaluated the proposed model extensively on a curated corpus from the Mayo Clinic. Our model outperforms standard transformer (80.9%) and perceiver (81.8%) models and achieves an average accuracy of 83.1%. With limited task-specific data, we find that pretraining is important and surprisingly pretraining with the unrelated automatic speech recognition (ASR) task is also beneficial. Encodings from the middle layers provide a mix of both acoustic and phonetic information and achieve best prediction results compared to just using the final layer encodings (83.1% vs. 79.6%). The results are promising and with further refinements may help clinicians detect speech abnormalities without needing access to highly specialized speech-language pathologists.

How will generative AI pay for itself? Unless charging users for access, selling advertising is the only alternative. Especially in the multi-billion dollar web search market with ads as the main source of revenue, the introduction of a subscription model seems unlikely. The recent disruption of search by generative large language models could thus ultimately be accompanied by generated ads. Our concern is that the commercialization of generative AI in general and large language models in particular could lead to native advertising in the form of quite subtle brand or product placements. In web search, the evolution of search engine results pages (SERPs) from traditional lists of ``ten blue links'' (lists SERPs) to generated text with web page references (text SERPs) may further blur the line between advertising-based and organic search results, making it difficult for users to distinguish between the two, depending on how advertising is integrated and disclosed. To raise awareness of this potential development, we conduct a pilot study analyzing the capabilities of current large language models to blend ads with organic search results. Although the models still struggle to subtly frame ads in an unrelated context, their potential is evident when integrating ads into related topics which calls for further investigation., Comment: Presented at OSSYM 2023

This article focuses on developing classical surrogates for parametrized quantum circuits using interpolation via (trigonometric) polynomials. We develop two algorithms for the construction of such surrogates and prove performance guarantees. The constructions are based on circuit evaluations which are blackbox in the sense that no structural specifics of the circuits are exploited. While acknowledging the limitations of the blackbox approach compared to whitebox evaluations, which exploit specific circuit properties, we demonstrate scenarios in which the blackbox approach might prove beneficial. We present calculations of the $^{40}$Ca transverse response function obtained from coupled-cluster theory used in conjunction with the Lorentz integral transform method. We employ nuclear forces derived at next-to-next-to leading order in chiral effective field theory with and without $\Delta$ degrees of freedom. We first benchmark this approach on the $^4$He nucleus and compare both the transverse sum rule and the response function to earlier calculations based on different methods. As expected from the power counting of the chiral expansion of electromagnetic currents and from previous studies, our results retaining only one-body term underestimate the experimental data for $^4$He by about $20\%$. However, when the method is applied to $^{40}$Ca at the same order of the expansion, response functions do not lack strength and agree well with the world electron scattering data. Virtual and augmented realities are increasingly popular tools in many domains such as architecture, production, training and education, (psycho)therapy, gaming, and others. For a convincing rendering of sound in virtual and augmented environments, audio signals must be convolved in real-time with impulse responses that change from one moment in time to another. Key requirements for the implementation of such time-variant real-time convolution algorithms are short latencies, moderate computational cost and memory footprint, and no perceptible switching artifacts. In this engineering report, we introduce a partitioned convolution algorithm that is able to quickly switch between impulse responses without introducing perceptible artifacts, while maintaining a constant computational load and low memory usage. Implementations in several popular programming languages are freely available via GitHub.

We present a joint Speech and Language Model (SLM), a multitask, multilingual, and dual-modal model that takes advantage of pretrained foundational speech and language models. SLM freezes the pretrained foundation models to maximally preserves their capabilities, and only trains a simple adapter with just 1\% (156M) of the foundation models' parameters. This adaptation not only leads SLM to achieve strong performance on conventional tasks such as speech recognition (ASR) and speech translation (AST), but also introduces the novel capability of zero-shot instruction-following for more diverse tasks: given a speech input and a text instruction, SLM is able to perform unseen generation tasks including contextual biasing ASR using real-time context, dialog generation, speech continuation, and question answering, etc. Our approach demonstrates that the representational gap between pretrained speech and language models might be narrower than one would expect, and can be bridged by a simple adaptation mechanism. As a result, SLM is not only efficient to train, but also inherits strong capabilities already acquired in foundation models of different modalities.

We show that quasi-isometries of (well-behaved) hierarchically hyperbolic groups descend to quasi-isometries of their maximal hyperbolic space. This has two applications, one relating to quasi-isometry invariance of acylindrical hyperbolicity, and the other a linear progress result for Markov chains. Charge radii of neutron deficient 40Sc and 41Sc nuclei were determined using collinear laser spectroscopy. With the new data, the chain of Sc charge radii extends below the neutron magic number N=20 and shows a pronounced kink, generally taken as a signature of a shell closure, but one notably absent in the neighboring Ca, K and Ar isotopic chains. Theoretical models that explain the trend at N=20 for the Ca isotopes cannot reproduce this puzzling behavior.
