Abstract

The energy density presents the core competitiveness of lithium (Li)-ion batteries. In conventional Li-ion batteries, the utilization of the gravimetric/volumetric energy density at the electrode level is unsatisfactory (<84 wt% and <62 vol%, respectively) due to the existence of non-electrochemical active parts among the 3D porous electrodes, including electrolytes, binders, and carbon additives. These are regarded as indispensable and irreducible components of the electronic and ionic transport network. Here, a dense “all-electrochem-active” (AEA) electrode for all-solid-state Li batteries is proposed, which is entirely constructed from a family of superior mixed electronic–ionic-conducting cathodes, to minimize the energy density gap between the accessible and theoretical energy density at the electrode level. Furthermore, with the ionic–electronic-conductive network self-supported from the AEA cathode, the dense hybrid sulfur (S)-based AEA electrode exhibits a high compacted filling rate of 91.8%, which indicates a high energy density of 777 W h kg−1 and 1945 W h L−1 at the electrode level based on the total cathodes and anodes when at 70 °C.

Abstract

Na‐based dual‐ion batteries (DIBs) are a class of post‐lithium technology with advantages including extremely fast charging, cost‐effectiveness, and high natural abundance of raw materials. Operating up to high voltages (≈5.0 V), the decomposition of classic carbonate‐based electrolyte formulations and the subsequent fade of capacity continues to be a major drawback in the development of these systems. Here, the performance of a Na‐DIB was investigated in different commonly employed electrolyte system, and a highly concentrated (3 m NaPF6) and fluorine‐rich carbonate‐based formulation was optimized to achieve a good performance when compared with literature (based on energy and power density, calculated at coin cell and only using the active mass of active materials). 134. A high-rate capability and energy density sodium ion full cell enabled by F-doped Na2Ti3O7 hollow spheres.

Abstract

Sodium-ion batteries (SIBs) have drawn remarkable attention due to their low cost and intrinsically inexhaustible sodium sources. In the past few decades, significant interest has been aroused in building promising negative electrode materials for SIBs, with long cycling stability and high-rate performance for future applications. Herein, a facile one-step integrated strategy in structure and diffusion regulation was applied to Na2Ti3O7 (NTO) microspheres via a templating route combined with a hydrothermal process. Thus the constructed F-doped NTO hollow microspheres delivered a high initial specific capacity (∼281.3 mA h g−1 at 1C), excellent cycling stability (189.6 mA h g−1 after 1000 cycles at 1C), and superior rate capability (143 mA h g−1 at 50C) as a promising anode for SIBs. Furthermore, the present report demonstrated the full cell performance with a Na3V2(PO4)3@C (NVP@C) cathode against a F-doped NTO hollow microsphere anode, which retained a high capacity retention of 94% after 50 cycles. Careful investigations indicated that the improved electrochemical properties could be attributed to the synergistic effects of the unique nanostructure construction (hollow microspheres compacted by 2D nanosheet architecture) and kinetics behavior regulation (through heterogeneous F ion doping and the induced oxygen vacancies). This synergistic effect not only stabilized the NTO-based electrode upon cycling, but also accelerated both the Na+ insertion/extraction and electron transfer kinetics behavior. The present study showed a way to produce a high-rate capability and energy density sodium-ion full cell, which could also be developed to build large-scale renewable energy storage systems. Abstract

The operation of lithium-ion batteries involves electron removal from and filling into the redox orbitals of cathode materials, experimentally probing the orbital electron population thus is highly desirable to resolve the redox processes and charge compensation mechanism. Here, we combine quantitative convergent-beam electron diffraction with high-energy synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction to quantify the orbital populations of Co and O in the archetypal cathode material LiCoO2. The results indicate that removing Li ions from LiCoO2 decreases Co t2g orbital population, and the intensified covalency of Co–O bond upon delithiation enables charge transfer from O 2p orbital to Co eg orbital, leading to increased Co eg orbital population and oxygen oxidation. Theoretical calculations verify these experimental findings, which not only provide an intuitive picture of the redox reaction process in real space, but also offer a guidance for designing high-capacity electrodes by mediating the covalency of the TM–O interactions. Experimentally probing the orbital population is highly desirable to resolve the redox mechanism of cathodes materials. Abstract

Sodium metal batteries are attracting increasing attention on account of their high energy densities as well as the abundance of sodium-based resources. However, the uneven metallic deposition and dendrite formation during cycling hinder the application of sodium metal anodes. Carbon skeletons have been reported in the literature to mitigate the dendrite formation during the plating and stripping of metallic sodium. Still, the role played by different carbon structural features (i.e., pores vs. defects) and relative mechanisms are not well understood, preventing the controllable interface engineering at the anode side. Here, we have rationally designed the structural features of sustainable carbon skeletons from a renewable precursor to unveil the roles of defects and pores for metallic deposition. The obtained carbon skeleton with rich defects and negligible pores exhibits the best performance when applied to protect metal anodes. After long cycling (>1200 hours), the retained high Coulombic efficiency (∼99.9%) of the plating and stripping processes indicates the importance of defects for inducing uniform metallic deposition. Combined with different types of cathodes (e.g., Prussian blue and sulfur), "anode-less"sodium metal batteries with enhanced electrochemical performance are also demonstrated in terms of sustainability. Abstract

Na superionic conductor structured Na3V2(PO4)3 cathodes have attracted great interest due to their long cycling lifespan and high thermal stability rendered by the robust 3D framework. However, their practical application is still hindered by the high cost of raw materials and limited energy density. Herein, a doping strategy with low‐cost Fe2+ is developed to activate V4+/V5+ redox, in an attempt to increase the energy density of phosphate cathodes. It is also revealed that reversible activation of V4+/V5+ redox is related to the Na positions (Na1, 6b; Na2, 18e). Only the V‐based compounds with enough Na2 content can activate the V4+/V5+ reversibly. More importantly, without presodiation treatment and addition of any sodiation agent, Na3.4V1.6Fe0.4(PO4)3 is delicately designed as both cathode and the Na self‐compensation agent in full cells, allowing a promising energy density of ≈260 Wh kg−1.
