Abstract

At the PF1B cold neutron beam line at the Institut Laue Langevin, the EXILL array consisting of EXOGAM, GASP and ILL-Clover detectors was used to perform (n,γ) measurements at very high coincidence rates. About ten different reactions were measured in autumn 2012 using a highly collimated cold neutron beam. In spring 2013, the EXOGAM array was combined with 16 LaBr3(Ce) scintillators in the EXILL&FATIMA campaign for the measurement of lifetimes using the generalised centroid difference method. We report on the properties of the set-ups and present first results from both campaigns.

Abstract

New research facilities like MEGa–Ray (Livermore) or ELI–NP (Bucharest) will provide within the next years (2013–2016) photon beams of unprecedented quality with respect to both photon intensity (total flux ~ 1013 γ/s) and spectral intensity (~ (104–106)/eVs), thus exceeding the performance of existing facilities by severalorders of magnitude. This tremendous progress will be enabled by Compton-backscattering of an intense laser off a high-quality electron beam, in conjunction with novel refractive bremsstrahlung beams focusing γ optics and efficient monochromatization techniques. We envisage to employ these γ beams for photofission studies on extremely deformed nuclear states of actinides, investigating their multiple–humped potential energy landscape in a highly selective way. Transmission resonances in the prompt fission cross section from the (superdeformed) second and (hyperdeformed) third potential minimum will be studied, where the fission decay channel can be expressed as a tunnelling process of these gateway states through the multiple–humped fission barrier.

Abstract

High power short-pulse lasers presently reach peak powers of a few hundred Terawatts up to a Petawatt, and routinely reach focal intensities of 1018 - 1021 W/cm2 . These lasers are able to produce various secondary radiation, from relativistic electrons and multi-MeV/nucleon ions to high-energetic X-rays and γ-rays. In many laboratories world-wide large efforts are presently devoted to a rapid development of this novel tool of particle acceleration, targeting nuclear, fundamental and high-field physics studies as well as various applications. Based on the Radiation Pressure Acceleration mechanism, laser-accelerated ion beams can be generated with solid-state density, thus exceeding beams from conventional accelerators by about 14 orders of magnitudes. This opens the perspective of a novel reaction scheme called ’f ssion-fusion’, where in a first step f ssion is induced both in laser-accelerated f ssile projectiles from a ’production target’ and in a second ’reaction target’ again from f ssile material hit by the accelerated projectiles. Due to the unprecedented ion density, (neutron-rich) light f ssion fragments from projectile and target can fuse again, forming extremely exotic species approaching the region of the N = 126 waiting point of the r-process. Within the next 5 years a new EU-funded large-scale research infrastructure (ELI: Extreme Light Infrastructure) will be constructed, with one of its four pillars exclusively devoted to nuclear physics based on high intensity lasers (ELI-Nuclear Physics, to be built in Magurele/Bucharest). Studies of laser-induced nuclear reactions like the ’f ssion-fusion’ mechanism will be amongst the experimental f agship projects pursued there.

Abstract

We report experimental results on laser-driven electron acceleration with low divergence. The electron beam was generated by focussing 750 mJ, 42 fs laser pulses into a gas-filled capillary discharge waveguide at electron densities in the range between 1018 and 1019cm-3. Quasi-monoenergetic electron bunches with energies as high as 500MeV have been detected, with features reaching up to 1 GeV, albeit with large shot-to-shot fluctuations. A more stable regime with higher bunch charge (20-45 pC) and less energy (200-300 MeV) could also be observed. The beam divergence and the pointing stability are around or below 1 mrad and 8 mrad, respectively. These findings are consistent with self-injection of electrons into a breaking plasma wave. © IOP Publishing Ltd and Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft.

Abstract

At Munich centre for Advance Photonics, one of the main aims of the project is the development and application of phase contrast imaging techniques for medical diagnostics to be performed with a new compact high brilliant and energetic X-ray source. High resolution phase contrast tomography of breast and cartilage tissues with characteristics of clinical interest have been performed producing outstanding results. Accurate visualization of fine structures and tissue degeneration in the imaged samples was obtained representing a real step forward in the direction of clinical applications of the high sensitive phase contrast X-ray imaging. © 2009 Springer-Verlag.

Abstract

In this paper, the excellence cluster "Munich-Centre for Advance Photonics" (MAP) is presented. One of the aims of the project is the development of innovative X-ray-based diagnostics imaging techniques to be implemented at an ultra-compact high-energy and high-brilliance X-ray source. The basis of the project and the developments towards the clinical application of phase contrast imaging applied to mammography and cartilage studies will be presented and discussed.
