A series of heteroleptic square-planar Pt and Pd complexes with bis(diisopropylphenyl) iminoacenaphtene (dpp-Bian) and Cl, 1,3-dithia-2-thione-4,5-dithiolate (dmit), or 1,3-dithia-2-thione-4,5-diselenolate (dsit) ligands have been prepared and characterized by spectroscopic techniques, elemental analysis, X-ray diffraction analysis, and cyclic voltammetry (CV). The intermolecular noncovalent interactions in the crystal structures were assessed by density functional theory (DFT) calculations. Environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFR) are an emerging class of constituents in particulate matter (PM). They are relatively stable with lifetimes of days to years in the condensed phase, influence PM toxicity, and are involved in reactive oxygen species (ROS) generation and multiphase chemistry. The abundance of EPFR has been investigated in laboratory studies and outdoor locations globally, but their prevalence indoors was previously unstudied. In a case study home, EPFR were present at similar concentrations in indoor and outdoor PM, at 2.3 ± 2.8 × 1012 and 3.6 ± 3.1 × 1012 spins m−3, respectively. Indoor EPFR were observed at varying concentrations in airborne PM, dust, and surface samples, with the most concentrated surface loadings observed on windows. Overall, dust and indoor surfaces were estimated to be larger contributors to total in-home EPFR concentrations than PM. For comparison, combined estimates of total EPFR concentrations in indoor PM, dust, and on surfaces are similar to the range of typical indoor ozone concentrations. Due to the reactive nature of EPFR, they potentially undergo rapid cycling and may represent reservoirs of reactivity in these multiphase systems that influence the surface and multiphase chemistry of indoor environments. Here, the exposure of EPFR collected from some surfaces to nitrogen dioxide or ozone was shown to alter EPFR abundances and composition. In all, these results support further investigations of EPFR abundance, composition, and reactivity on indoor surfaces, including in accumulated organic coatings and dust.

With increasing stakeholders' demand for information on corporate social responsibility (CSR) performance and a growing number of firms issuing standalone CSR reports, this study examines the relation between CSR performance and the quantity and quality of CSR disclosures. Drawing on signaling and political legitimacy theories of information disclosure and using a US sample of 2774 standalone CSR reports from 2003 to 2015, we find better CSR performing firms issue longer CSR reports and provide incremental information in their CSR reports relative to their annual financial reports. Furthermore, the textual content in their CSR reports is less focused on short-term issues, reflecting higher disclosure quality. In contrast, poor CSR performing firms tend exhibit lower disclosure quality as their CSR reports use more uncertain words. Our study contributes to the understanding of how CSR performance affect stakeholder engagement through the characteristics of textual content in standalone CSR reports. Background Endometrial cancer (EC) is a hormone-related carcinoma with increased morbidity among female patients of all backgrounds. The immune microenvironment of EC is uncertain. Materials and Methods 102 patients were recruited in the present study. 90 postoperative specimens from the patients were analyzed by immunohistochemistry. The leukocyte landscape of endometrial cancer was mapped using high-dimensional single-cell profiling (CyTOF) for 12 patients. Results NK cells, MDMs, and neutrophils were enriched in adjacent normal tissue. CCR5+CD38+ PD1+Th9 cells were enriched in the invasive margin. Additionally, PD1+ESRneg T cells and Siglec1+CCR5+CD40+ESRhi macrophage were infiltrated in the tumors. Conclusions Immunological landscape of EC might shed light on new immunotherapuetic approach. In this work, a variable thickness tube blank geometry is proposed to be used in T-shaped tube hydroforming. The dimensions of the tube blank are optimized by the response surface method (RSM) linked with finite element simulation during T-shaped tube hydroforming. The influence of the wall thickness, angle and length of the tube blank are discussed on the thinning ratio and branch height. Multi-objective functions that relate objectives and design variables are formulated. Furthermore, the design variables having greatest impact on the objectives are obtained by sensitivity analysis. The optimal the geometric dimensions are determined within the given criterion by RSW and desirability approach. The optimized results have good agreement with the obtained results by finite element simulation and experiment.

A solid state terahertz interferometer has been developed on the recent commissioned HL-2M tokamak. It can work in a wide frequency region of 220–325 GHz, and the terahertz wave is generated from a low frequency phase locked voltage controlled oscillator with the frequency multiplying technique. A phase processor based on field programmable gate array (FPGA) technology is designed for the heterodyne interferometer, and it contributes to real-time display of electron density. To extract phase information, a novel numerical algorithm related to fast Fourier transform is written on the FPGA chip and enables one to obtain phase shift without being affected by amplitude variation induced by plasma absorption or frequency modulation from the outer electromagnetic environment. The interferometer achieves minimum measurable electron density in the order of 1016 m−3. With the plasma diagnosis, electron density and low frequency tearing mode have been measured during the first experimental campaign.

Many physical phenomena in the ocean involve interactions between water masses of different temperatures and salinities at boundaries. Of particular interest is the characterisation of finescale structure at the marginal interaction zones of these boundaries, where the structure is either destroyed by mixing or formed by stratification. Using high-resolution seismic reflection imaging, we present observations of temporal changes at the leading edge of an interface between sub-thermocline layers in the Panama Basin. By studying time-lapse images of a seismic reflector between two water boundaries with subtle differences, we provide empirical constraints on how stratified layers evolve. This case study presents an ambitious student-staff partnership project at University College London (UCL) to publish a collaborative book on higher education pedagogy. Over two-and-a-half years, a total of 86 students and staff contributed to the project, which sought to provide educators with a new type of scholarly material under the unifying theme of connecting research and teaching. Multiple layers of student-staff partnership were interwoven throughout the project; this case study contextualizes these layers against three dimensions: institutional, organizational, and community identity. Central to the project was our distinctive approach to engaging with Graduate Teaching Assistants (GTAs) and their crucial role in bringing the three dimensions together. As such, the project represents a model of enhanced student-staff partnership that has the capacity to empower students and break down educational silos to form new, multi-specialty learning communities.

A 61-year-old woman was evaluated at our institution for enrollment in a clinical trial for relapsed/refractory multiple myeloma. The initial eligibility evaluation revealed an increased total bilirubin result of 7.2 mg/dL [123.1 μmol/L; reference interval (RI)3, 0.0–1.2 mg/dL]. Benzoylthiourea derivatives feature several donor atoms capable of coordinating to metal centers. We report here a series of Ru(η6 -p-cymene) complexes employing benzoylthiourea derivatives as ligands. Such ligands often coordinate to metal centers through their S and O donor atoms. We isolated complexes where the ligands were mono- or bidentately coordinated to Ru involving the S donor atom and surprisingly in bidentate coordination mode a deprotonated thiourea nitrogen resulting in a 4-membered ring structure around the metal center. DFT calculations were used to explain the differences in coordination behavior. These were complemented by stability studies and biological investigations of the compounds as anticancer agents. Several of the synthesized derivatives exhibited significant cell growth inhibitory activity, with the complexes featuring bidentate ligands being more potent than their monodentate counterparts. This can be explained by the higher stability of the former under the conditions employed in cell culture assays.

Redox-modulating anticancer drugs allow the exploitation of altered redox biology observed in many cancer cells. We discovered dinuclear RhIII(Cp*) and IrIII(Cp*) complexes that have in vitro anticancer activity superior to cisplatin and the investigational drug IT-139, while being less toxic in haemolysis and in vivo zebrafish models. The mode of action appears to be related to DNA damage and ROS-mediated stress pathways.

The mechanical properties of granular materials at a low shear rate are frequently viewed as rate-independent, and a rate-independent constitutive relation is used to describe the mechanical behaviors of the granular material. However, time-dependent behaviors (or creeping behaviors) become significant in the long run. In this paper, we conduct triaxial experiments to observe the creep of granular materials under both dynamic and static loading conditions. Three typical creeping behaviors, aging, transitional, and fluidic, have been observed. To describe the time-dependent behaviors, an internal state variable characterizing the fluidity of the granular system is introduced to propose a rate-dependent constitutive relation which we call in this paper, a state evolution model. A characteristic strain is also introduced into the model to account for the influences of historic strain on the current state. The experiments are analyzed using the proposed model and it has been found that our model can well discern the observed three creeping behaviors. A criterion to identify the stability of a granular system is also given out based on the proposed model. Two key factors dominating the stability of the granular system are recognized – shear wave velocity and critical velocity. Our laboratory experiments in combination with the proposed criterion offer a physical explanation of the intrinsic triggering mechanism of system evolution from a stable to fluidic state: decrease in wave velocity or/and critical velocity.

To clarify the promotive effect of LINC00346 on the malignant progression of colorectal cancer (CRC) by mediating miRNA-101-5p/MMP9 axis.Expression pattern of LINC00346 in 46 paired CRC tissues and adjacent normal tissues was determined by quantitative Real Time-Polymerase Chain Reaction (qRT-PCR). Correlation between LINC00346 level and prognosis of CRC patients was analyzed, and the LINC00346 level in CRC cell lines was examined as well. Subsequently, potential influences of LINC00346 on cellular behaviors of CRC cells were evaluated through cell counting kit-8 (CCK-8), colony formation, transwell, and wound healing assays. Finally, Dual-Luciferase reporter gene assay was conducted to verify the binding relationship between LINC00346 and miRNA-101-5p/MMP9.LINC00346 was upregulated in CRC tissues and cell lines. Compared with CRC patients with low level of LINC00346, those with high level suffered a poorer prognosis, and higher metastatic rates (lymph node metastasis and distant metastasis). Transfection of sh-LINC00346 attenuated proliferative, migratory, and invasive abilities of CRC cells. In addition, LINC00346 was confirmed to bind to miRNA-101-5p, and the latter was binding to MMP9. Moreover, the overexpression of miRNA-101-5p decreased colony number, viability, and numbers of migratory and invasive cells.LINC00346 is upregulated in CRC and correlated with metastasis and poor prognosis of CRC. LINC00346 accelerates the malignant progression of CRC via targeting miRNA-101-5p/MMP9.

Adolescence is a sensitive period for both brain development and the emergence of chronic pain particularly in females. However, the brain mechanisms supporting pain perception during adolescence remain unclear. This study compares perceptual and brain responses to pain in female adolescents and adults to characterize pain processing in the developing brain. Thirty adolescent (ages 13-17) and thirty adult (ages 35-55) females underwent a functional MRI scan involving acute experimental pain. Participants received 12 ten-second noxious pressure stimuli which were applied to the left thumbnail at 2.5 and 4 kg/cm2, and rated pain intensity and unpleasantness on a visual analogue scale. We found a significant group-by-stimulus intensity interaction on pain ratings. Compared to adults, adolescents reported greater pain intensity and unpleasantness in response to 2.5 kg/cm2, but not 4 kg/cm2. Adolescents showed greater medial-lateral prefrontal cortex (PFC) and supramarginal gyrus activation in response to 2.5 kg/cm2, and greater medial PFC and rostral anterior cingulate responses to 4 kg/cm2. Adolescents showed augmented pain-evoked responses in the Neurologic Pain Signature and greater activation in the default mode (DMN) and ventral attention (VAN) networks. Also, the amygdala and associated regions played a stronger role in predicting pain intensity in adolescents, and activity in DMN and VAN regions more strongly mediated the relationship between stimulus intensity and pain ratings. This study provides the first evidence of augmented pain-evoked brain responses in healthy female adolescents involving regions important for nociceptive, affective and cognitive processing, in line with their augmented sensitivity to low-intensity noxious stimuli.

The magnetic field of ultraluminous X-ray (ULX) pulsars is the key parameter to understand the nature and accretion physics. However, the typical magnetic field values in these ULX pulsars are still under debate. We used six different torque models to study the magnetic fields of ULX pulsars, to see how derived magnetic fields change with different models, and to determine which models are more suitable for ULX pulsars. We took the currently available period, period derivative, and flux data of 7 confirmed ULX pulsars, M82 X-2, ULX NGC 7793 P13, ULX NGC 5907, NGC 300 ULX1, NGC 1313 X-2, M51 ULX-7, Swift J0243.6+6124, plus one potential ULX pulsars, SMC X-3. The magnetic fields of these ULX pulsars were constrained from two physical conditions: the spin-up process and near equilibrium. We checked possible dependence of the magnetic field estimations on the different torque models. The calculations suggest the accretion torque models by Ghosh and Lamb (1979) , Wang (1995) , Kluźniak and Rappaport (2007) and Campbell (2012) are more likely to support magnetar models for ULX pulsars, while Lovelace et al. (1995) 's model generally predicts the magnetic field in normal neutron stars. Implications of our results combined with other independent methods are also discussed, which will help us to understand the nature and rotational behavior of these ULX pulsars.

We developed a rich dataset of Chest X-Ray (CXR) images to assist investigators in artificial intelligence. The data were collected using an eye-tracking system while a radiologist reviewed and reported on 1,083 CXR images. The dataset contains the following aligned data: CXR image, transcribed radiology report text, radiologist’s dictation audio and eye gaze coordinates data. We hope this dataset can contribute to various areas of research particularly towards explainable and multimodal deep learning/machine learning methods. Furthermore, investigators in disease classification and localization, automated radiology report generation, and human-machine interaction can benefit from these data. The development of bifunctional platinum complexes with the ability to interact with DNA via different binding modes is of interest in anticancer metallodrug research. Therefore, we report platinum(II) terpyridine complexes to target DNA by coordination and/or through a tethered alkylating moiety. The platinum complexes were evaluated for their in vitro antiproliferative properties against the human cancer cell lines HCT116 (colorectal), SW480 (colon), NCI-H460 (non-small cell lung), and SiHa (cervix) and generally exhibited potent antiproliferative activity although lower than their respective terpyridine ligands. 1H NMR spectroscopy and/or ESI-MS studies on the aqueous stability and reactivity with various small biomolecules, acting as protein and DNA model compounds, were used to establish potential modes of action for these complexes. These investigations indicated rapid binding of complex PtL3 to the biomolecules through coordination to the Pt center, while PtL4 in addition alkylated 9-ethylguanine. PtL3 was investigated for its reactivity to the model protein hen egg white lysozyme (HEWL) by protein crystallography which allowed identification of the Nδ1 atom of His15 as the binding site.
