105. Calculation of NMR Properties of Solitons in Superfluid 3He-A

Abstract

Superfluid 3He-A has domain-wall-like structures, which are called solitons. We calculate numerically the structure of a splay soliton. We study the effect of solitons on the nuclear-magnetic-resonance spectrum by calculating the frequency shifts and the amplitudes of the soliton peaks for both longitudinal and transverse oscillations of magnetization. The effect of dissipation caused by normal-superfluid conversion and spin diffusion is calculated. The calculations are in good agreement with experiments, except a problem in the transverse resonance frequency of the splay soliton or in magnetic-field dependence of reduced resonance frequencies., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, updated to the published version

Abstract

We study theoretically the stability of flow in superfluid 3He-A. The calculations are done using a one-dimensional model where the order parameter depends only on the coordinate in the direction of the superfluid velocity v_s. We concentrate on the case that the external magnetic field H is perpendicular to v_s, where only few results are available analytically. We calculate the critical velocity v_c at which the superflow becomes unstable against the formation of continuous vortices. The detailed dependence of v_c on the temperature and on the form of the underlying orbital texture l(r) is investigated. Both uniform and helical textures and two types of domain-wall structures are studied. Abstract

Biosensor research is a swiftly growing field for developing rapid and precise analytical devices for biomedical, pharmaceutical, and industrial use and beyond. Herein, we propose a phage-based biosensor method to develop a sensitive and specific system for biomedical detection. Our method is based on in vitro selected phages and their interaction with the targeted analytes as well as on optical properties that change according to the concentration of the model analyte. The green fluorescent protein (GFP) was chosen as our model analyte as it has its own well-known optical properties. Brilliant green was used as a reporter component for the sensor. Its presence enables a color intensity (absorbance) change when the analyte is present in the solution. Furthermore, the reporter dye functioned as a quencher for an additional lanthanide label in our assay. It mediated the specific phage-derived interference in the signal measured with the time-resolved luminescence. Most importantly, our results confirmed that the presented bifunctional phage with its liquid crystal properties enabled the measurement of GFP in a concentration-dependent, quantitative manner with a limit of detection of 0.24 µg/mL. In the future, our novel method to develop phage-based biosensors may provide highly sensitive and specific biosensors for biomedical or otherwise-relevant targets.

Abstract

Animal welfare offences encompass a heterogeneous range of crimes, including violence and various forms of negligence toward animals’ needs. However, there is limited understanding of the offenders’ rationalisations concerning their criminal behaviour against animals, despite this information being essential for enhancing the prevention of these crimes. Our data comprised 1,443 judgements in animal welfare offences in Finland between January 2011 and May 2021. We categorised the rationalisations used by defendants and identified differences between offender profiles according to the offence type. Nearly all defendants responded to the charges. Overall, defendants appealed most often to their challenging circumstances, e.g. a lack of resources. Defendants charged with offences against production animals offered more explanations than the other defendants and often denied their responsibility for the animals, or having caused them any harm, and appealed to financial problems, weather conditions, and having too many animals. Moreover, they frequently challenged the norms, appealing in particular to the immorality of the authorities, who were mostly official veterinarians. Defendants charged with animal hoarding offences rationalised their actions similarly to animal farmers, whereas those charged with violent crimes against animals more often cited provocative or otherwise problematic behaviour of the animal victim. Our results support the observation that farmers may perceive official animal welfare supervision negatively. Violent animal welfare crimes and animal hoarding stand out as distinctive types of crime at the level of rationalisations. The differences between offence types and offenders’ underlying motivations should be considered when developing animal welfare control, agricultural support systems, and crime prevention. 143. The prevalence of Corynosoma parasite worms in the great cormorants and the Baltic herring in the northern Baltic Sea, Finland.

Abstract

During 2014–2019, the prevalence of Corynosoma spp., a parasite species in great cormorants (Phalacrocorax carbo spp.) and in Baltic herring (Clupea harengus membras), was studied in the Archipelago and the Bothnian Seas of the northern Baltic Sea. These results suggest that cormorants may act as a definitive host for these acanthocephalan parasites. Adults were more infected with the parasites than juveniles, which could be due to their larger size. A lower prevalence of Corynosoma spp. in juveniles may be because smaller cormorants eat smaller fish that have less parasites. We found that the most abundant corynosoma species in both the Baltic herring and cormorants were Corynosoma semerme , whereas only a few individuals of C. strumosum and only one C. magdaleni were found. The prevalence of corynosoma in herring increased from 2014 to 2018, and individuals in the Bothnian Sea were infected less frequently than herring in the Archipelago Sea. Results also showed that infected herring individuals were generally larger than non-infected individuals, which could be explained by their size and their feeding habits. Currently, the changing environment of the Baltic Sea may cause an effect on the herring making them more susceptible to infections. Our results, therefore, emphasize the importance of the regular monitoring of infections and the parasite-host relationships in the Baltic Sea. Abstract

A soil moisture estimation method was developed for Sentinel-1 synthetic aperture radar (SAR) ground range detected high resolution (GRDH) data to analyze moisture conditions in a gently undulating and heterogeneous subarctic area containing forests, wetlands, and open orographic tundra. In order to preserve the original 10-m pixel spacing, PIMSAR (pixel-based multitemporal nonlocal averaging) nonlocal mean filtering was applied. It was guided by multitemporal statistics of SAR images in the area. The gradient boosted trees (GBT) machine learning method was used for the soil moisture algorithm development. Discrete and continuous in situ soil moisture values were used for training and validation of the algorithm. For surface soil moisture, the root mean square error (RMSE) of the method was 6.5% and 8.8% for morning and evening images, respectively. The corresponding maximum errors were 34.1% and 33.8%. The pixelwise sensitivity to the training set and method choice was estimated as the variance of the soil moisture values derived using the algorithms for the three best methods with respect to the criteria: the smallest maximum error, the smallest RMSE value, and the highest coefficient of determination ( R2 ) value. It was, on average, 6.3% with a standard deviation of 5.7%. Our approach successfully produced instantaneous high-resolution soil moisture estimates on daily basis for the subarctic landscape and can further be applied to various hydrological, biogeochemical, and management purposes.

Abstract

High-level exposure to indoor air pollutants (IAPs) and their corresponding adverse health effects have become a public concern in China in the past 10 years. However, neither national nor provincial level burden of disease attributable to multiple IAPs has been reported for China. This is the first study to estimate and rank the annual burden of disease and the financial costs attributable to targeted residential IAPs at the national and provincial level in China from 2000 to 2017.

149. The effect of Pd and Ni coatings on hydrogen permeation experiments of as-quenched martensitic steel

Abstract

Hydrogen permeation technique is a widely used testing method for the determination of hydrogen diffusion coefficient (D), which is an important parameter considering hydrogen embrittlement. A palladium (Pd) or nickel (Ni) coating is often utilised on the hydrogen detection side of the test specimens. Here, we investigate the effect of Pd and Ni coatings on hydrogen diffusion in a martensitic 500 HBW hardness low-alloy steel in the thickness range of 0.5 – 0.8 mm using a refined successive transient method and compare against an uncoated reference specimen. Both coatings yield similar average Dvalues (6 – 6.6 × 10−7cm2/s), but the best repeatability is achieved with Pd coating. With Ni coating, Dvalues decrease with the increasing specimen thickness, which is partly caused by a slower hydrogen diffusion in Ni, and therefore a concentration gradient at the specimen-coating interface. The uncoated specimen has a poor transient fit, and significantly lower D(2.1 × 10−7cm2/s) due to surface oxidation. With both coatings, the steepness of the last decay transient was highly affected by specimen thickness, and therefore the density of reversible hydrogen traps is only comparable for similar thicknesses.
