This article deals with the concept of scaling -up and scaling -down of industrial processes which is an essential requirement to understand and optimize the process. The concept has been described based on physical modeling of the process at laboratory scale using various techniques. The concept of physical modeling has been followed by two industrial examples where it has been used successfully. First example deals about scaling down of an industrial process to a laboratory scale to understand the raceway formation phenomena in an iron making blast furnace. In second example development of a new process for Mo addition in EAF practice is described. The development starts from theoretical backgrounds for the process of Mo addition improvements and then follows with number of experimental trials starting from 16g laboratory scale furnace to 70 ton industrial EAF., QC 20150413

BACKGROUND Experimental learning, traditionally conducted in on-campus laboratory venues, is the cornerstone of science and engineering education. In order to ensure that engineering graduates are exposed to ‘real-world’ situations and attain the necessary professional skill-sets, as mandated by course accreditation bodies such as Engineers Australia, face-to-face laboratory experimentation with real equipment has been an integral component of traditional engineering education. The online delivery of engineering coursework endeavours to mimic this with remote and simulated laboratory experimentation. To satisfy student and accreditation requirements, the common practice has been to offer equivalent remote and/or simulated laboratory experiments in lieu of the ones delivered, face-to face, on campus. The current implementations of both remote and simulated laboratories tend to be specified with a focus on technical characteristics, instead of pedagogical requirements. This work attempts to redress this situation by developing a framework for the investigation of the suitability of different experimental educational environments to deliver quality teaching and learning. PURPOSE For the tertiary education sector involved with technical or scientific training, a research framework capable of assessing the affordances of laboratory venues is an important aid during the planning, designing and evaluating stages of face-to-face and online (or cyber) environments that facilitate student experimentation. Providing quality experimental learning venues has been identified as one of the distance-education providers’ greatest challenges. BACKGROUND For engineering graduates to be work-ready with marketable skills they must not only be well-versed with engineering science and its applications, but also able to adapt to using commercial software that is widely used in engineering practice. Hydrological/hydraulic modelling is one aspect of engineering practice which demands the ability to apply fundamentals into design and construction using software. The user manuals for such software are usually tailored for the experienced engineer but not for undergraduates who typically are novices to concepts of modelling and software tools. As the focus of a course such as Advanced Water Engineering is on the wider aspects of engineering application of hydrological and hydraulic concepts, it is ineffective for the lecturers to direct the students to user manuals as students have neither the time nor the desire to sift through numerous pages in a manual. An alternative and efficient way to demonstrate the use of the software is enabling students to develop a model to simulate real-world scenario using the tools of the software and directing them to make informed decisions based on outcomes. PURPOSE Past experience of the lecturer showed that the resources available for the students left a knowledge gap leading to numerous student queries outside contact hours. The purpose of this study is to assess how effective purpose-built video resources can be in supplementing the traditional learning resources to enhance student learning. APPROACH Short-length animated video clips comprising guided step-by-step instructions were prepared using screen capture software to capture screen activity and later edited to focus on specific features using pop-up annotations; Vocal narration was purposely excluded to avoid disturbances due to noise and allow different learning paces of individual students. There are still many programs in Australia and overseas where curricula comprise largely 20th Century-relevant graduate outcomes, framed in 20th Century learning and teaching approaches. A ‘Dynamic and Deliberative Model for Curriculum Renewal’ (DDMCR) model exists for undertaking such curriculum renewal that draws on the experiences of educators around the world, however there are few experiences to date in applying this model. At the Queensland University of Technology, the 2012 accreditation by Engineers Australia observed that, despite being exposed to relevant discipline-specific engineering curriculum and practice, students did not seem to be aware of the relevance of sustainable development to their degree, beyond first year exposure. In addressing this feedback, level 8 Australian Qualifications Framework, and drawing ideas from the DDMCR model, faculty senior management undertook a full review of the engineering curriculum.

BACKGROUND As engineering schools adopt outcomes - focused learning approaches in response to government expectations and industry requirements of graduates capable of learning and applying knowledge in different contexts, university academics must be capable of developing and delivering programs that meet these requirements. Those academics are increasingly facing challenges in progressing their research and also acquiring different skill sets to meet the learning and teaching requirements. PURPOSE The goal of this study was to identify the types of development and support structures in place for academic staff, especially early career ones, and examine how the type of institution and the rank or role of the staff member affects these structures. DESIGN/METHOD We conducted semi - structured interviews with 21 individuals in a range of positions pertaining to teaching and learning in engineering education. Open coding was used to identify main themes from the guiding questions raised in the interviews and refined to address themes relevant to the development of institutional staff . The interview data was then analysed based on the type of institution and the rank/ role of the participant. RESULTS While development programs that focus on improving teaching and learning are available, the approach on using these types of programs differed based on staff perspective. Fewer academics, regardless of rank/role, had knowledge of support structures related to other areas of scholarship, e.g. disciplinary research, educational research, learning the institutional culture. The type of institution also impacted how they weighted and encouraged multiple forms of scholarship. We found that academic staff holding higher ranking positions, e.g. dean or associate dean, were not only concerned with the success of their respective programs, but also in how to promote other academic staff participation throughout the process. Background: A major challenge for assessing students’ conceptual understanding of STEM subjects is the capacity of assessment tools to reliably and robustly evaluate student thinking and reasoning. Multiple-choice tests are typically used to assess student learning and are designed to include distractors that can indicate students’ incomplete understanding of a topic or concept based on which distractor the student selects. However, these tests fail to provide the critical information uncovering the how and why of students’ reasoning for their multiple-choice selections. Open-ended or structured response questions are one method for capturing higher level thinking, but are often costly in terms of time and attention to properly assess student responses. Purpose: The goal of this study is to evaluate methods for automatically assessing open-ended responses, e.g. students’ written explanations and reasoning for multiple-choice selections. Design/Method: We incorporated an open response component for an online signals and systems multiple-choice test to capture written explanations of students’ selections. The effectiveness of an automated approach for identifying and assessing student conceptual understanding was evaluated by comparing results of lexical analysis software packages (Leximancer and NVivo) to expert human analysis of student responses. In order to understand and delineate the process for effectively analysing text provided by students, the researchers evaluated strengths and weakness for both the human and automated approaches. Results: Human and automated analyses revealed both correct and incorrect associations for certain conceptual areas. For some questions, that were not anticipated or included in the distractor selections, showing how multiple-choice questions alone fail to capture the comprehensive picture of student understanding. BACKGROUND In a process engineering setting, graduates are frequently allocated reviews of existing operations or required to scope new production processes by their supervisors with a view to improving or expanding on operations and overall productivity. These tasks may be carried out in teams and in consultation with the process engineer’s immediate line manager or a more experienced engineer, such as the Production or Maintenance Manager; ultimately reporting to senior management, which is frequently a non-engineer. Although professional skills development is part of engineering curricula, ‘professional conduct’ and ‘accountability’ required for dealing with peers and superiors in industry is not very well addressed at university. Consequently, upon graduation, many students are, in terms of knowledge and experience in this area, underprepared to work effectively in industry settings. PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to develop and implement a role-play scenario within a core 2nd year process engineering unit, so that students could gain knowledge, skills and experience in different aspects (and nuances) of professional conduct and accountability. DESIGN/METHOD In the role-play scenario, students worked in ‘engineering production teams’ to design a process for an iconic Queensland fruitcake and to present their solution and recommendations (culminating in a poster presentation) to an assessment panel consisting of staff, role-playing as, ‘production and plant managers’. Students were assessed on several areas, including professionalism using a criteria referenced assessment guide by a 3-member cross-disciplinary staff panel consisting of a Business Faculty lecturer, an engineer from industry and the lecturer of the Process Engineering unit. Professional conduct and accountability was gauged through direct questioning by the panel. Motivated by the growing interest in unmanned aerial system’s applications in indoor and outdoor settings and the standardisation of visual sensors as vehicle payload. This work presents a collision avoidance approach based on omnidirectional cameras that does not require the estimation of range between two platforms to resolve a collision encounter. It will achieve a minimum separation between the two vehicles involved by maximising the view-angle given by the omnidirectional sensor. Only visual information is used to achieve avoidance under a bearing-only visual servoing approach. We provide theoretical problem formulation, as well as results from real flight using small quadrotors.

This study provides an explanatory model for the takeover selection process in Malaysia using 144 non-fmancial firms, which includes bidders, targets, control bidders and control targets for period 1980-1993. The takeover firms are first analyzed on a univariate basis to assess the differences in the bidder and target groups to examine if the bidder firms were more efficient than the target firms were. The discriminant model that provides a useful tool for explaining the categorical classification is then used for delineating the bidder and target firms. A set of five economic/financial variables has been identified to discriminate between the firm’s groupings using publicly available time series data. The empirical findings suggest that; a) five predictive variables account for about 90% of the firms’ groupings, b) fmancial leverage is the most powerful discriminatory variable followed by profit, risk, size, and growth, in that order, c) bidder firms have higher profit and growth, and lower leverage, risk and size, than the target firms, and accordingly provide some support that, d) the takeover was motivated by the bidder firms’ desire for reaping the fruits of economies of scale in order to maintain the tempo of high profit and high growth and/or for displacement of inefficient managers of target firms. The accuracy of the results is shown to hold using the logistic regression model.
