Tailoring transport properties of strongly correlated electron systems in a controlled fashion counts among the dreams of materials scientists. In copper oxides, varying the carrier concentration is a tool to obtain high-temperature superconducting phases. In manganites, doping results in exotic physics such as insulator-metal transitions (IMT), colossal magnetoresistance (CMR), orbital- or charge-ordered (CO) or charge-disproportionate (CD) states. In most oxides, antiferromagnetic order and charge-disproportionation are asssociated with insulating behavior. Here we report the realization of a unique physical state that can be induced by Mo doping in LaFeO$_3$: the resulting metallic state is a site-selective Mott insulator where itinerant electrons evolving in low-energy Mo states coexist with localized carriers on the Fe sites. In addition, a local breathing-type lattice distortion induces charge disproportionation on the latter, without destroying the antiferromagnetic order. A state, combining antiferromangetism, metallicity and CD phenomena is rather rare in oxides and may be of utmost significance for future antiferromagnetic memory devices., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

Quantum dots tuned to atomic resonances represent an emerging field of hybrid quantum systems where the advantages of quantum dots and natural atoms can be combined. Embedding quantum dots in nanowires boosts these systems with a set of powerful possibilities, such as precise positioning of the emitters, excellent photon extraction efficiency and direct electrical contacting of quantum dots. Notably, nanowire structures can be grown on silicon substrates, allowing for a straightforward integration with silicon-based photonic devices. In this work we show controlled growth of nanowire-quantum-dot structures on silicon, frequency tuned to atomic transitions. We grow GaAs quantum dots in AlGaAs nanowires with a nearly pure crystal structure and excellent optical properties. We precisely control the dimensions of quantum dots and their position inside nanowires, and demonstrate that the emission wavelength can be engineered over the range of at least $30\,nm$ around $765\,nm$. By applying an external magnetic field we are able to fine tune the emission frequency of our nanowire quantum dots to the $D_{2}$ transition of $^{87}$Rb. We use the Rb transitions to precisely measure the actual spectral linewidth of the photons emitted from a nanowire quantum dot to be $9.4 \pm 0.7 \mu eV$, under non-resonant excitation. Control of heat flux at small length scales is crucial for numerous solid-state devices and systems. In addition to the thermal management of information and communication devices the mastering of heat transfer channels down to the nanoscale also enable, e.g., new memory concepts, high sensitivity detectors and sensors, energy harvesters and compact solid-state refrigerators. Electronic coolers and thermal detectors for electromagnetic radiation, especially, rely on the maximization of electro-thermal response and blockade of phonon transport. In this work, we propose and demonstrate that efficient electro-thermal operation and phonon transfer blocking can be achieved in a single solid-state thermionic junction. Our experimental demonstration relies on suspended semiconductor-superconductor junctions where the electro-thermal response arises from the superconducting energy gap, and the phonon blocking naturally results from the transmission bottleneck at the junction. We suspend different size degenerately doped silicon chips (up to macroscopic scale) directly from the junctions and cool these by biasing the junctions. The electronic cooling operation characteristics are accompanied by measurement and analysis of the thermal resistance components in the structures indicating the operation principle of phonon blocking in the junctions.

The Fe$_5$PB$_2$ compound offers tunable magnetic properties via the possibility of various combinations of substitutions on the Fe and P-sites. Here, we present a combined computational and experimental study of the magnetic properties of (Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_5$PB$_2$. Computationally, we are able to explore the full concentration range, while the real samples were only obtained for 0 <= x <= 0.7. The calculated magnetic moments, Curie temperatures, and magnetocrystalline anisotropy energies (MAEs) are found to decrease with increasing Co concentration. Co substitution allows for tuning the Curie temperature in a wide range of values, from about six hundred to zero kelvins. As the MAE depends on the electronic structure in the vicinity of Fermi energy, the geometry of the Fermi surface of Fe$_5$PB$_2$ and the k-resolved contributions to the MAE are discussed. Low temperature measurements of an effective anisotropy constant for a series of (Fe$_{1-x}$Co$_{x}$)$_5$PB$_2$ samples determined the highest value of 0.94 MJ m$^{-3}$ for the terminal Fe$_5$PB$_2$ composition, which then decreases with increasing Co concentration, thus confirming the computational result that Co alloying of Fe$_5$PB$_2$ is not a good strategy to increase the MAE of the system. However, the relativistic version of the fixed spin moment method reveals that a reduction in the magnetic moment of Fe$_5$PB$_2$, by about 25%, produces a fourfold increase of the MAE. Furthermore, calculations for (Fe$_{0.95}$X$_{0.05}$)$_5$PB$_2$ (X = 5$d$ element) indicate that 5% doping of Fe$_5$PB$_2$ with W or Re should double the MAE. These are results of high interest for, e.g., permanent magnet applications, where a large MAE is crucial.

Generating correlated photon pairs at the nanoscale is a prerequisite to creating highly integrated optoelectronic circuits that perform quantum computing tasks based on heralded single-photons. Here we demonstrate fulfilling this requirement with a generic tip-surface metal junction. When the junction is luminescing under DC bias, inelastic tunneling events of single electrons produce a photon stream in the visible spectrum whose super-bunching index is 17 when measured with a 53 picosecond instrumental resolution limit. These photon bunches contain true photon pairs of plasmonic origin, distinct from accidental photon coincidences. The effect is electrically rather than optically driven - completely absent are pulsed lasers, down-conversions, and four-wave mixing schemes. This discovery has immediate and profound implications for quantum optics and cryptography, notwithstanding its fundamental importance to basic science and its ushering in of heralded photon experiments on the nanometer scale.

Two-particle generalized susceptibilities and their irreducible vertex functions play a prominent role in the quantum many-body theory for correlated electron systems. They act as basic building blocks in the parquet formalism which provides a flexible scheme for the calculation of spectral and response functions. The irreducible vertices themselves have recently attracted increased attention as unexpected divergences in these functions have been identified. Remarkably, such singularities appear already for one of the simplest strongly interacting systems: the atomic limit of the half-filled Hubbard model (Hubbard atom). In this paper, we calculate the analytical expressions for all two-particle irreducible vertex functions of the Hubbard atom in all scattering channels as well as the fully irreducible two-particle vertices. We discuss their divergences and classify them by the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the corresponding generalized susceptibilities. In order to establish a connection to the recently found multivaluedness of the exact self-energy functional $\Sigma[G]$, we show that already an approximation akin to iterated perturbation theory is sufficient to capture, qualitatively, the divergent structure of the vertex functions. Finally, we show that the localized divergences in the disordered binary mixture model are directly linked to a minimum in the single-particle Matsubara Green's function., Comment: 16 pages, 3 figures

Wireless-controlled robots, cars and other critical applications are in need of technologies that offer high reliability and low latency. Massive MIMO, Multiple-Input Multiple-Output, is a key technology for the upcoming 5G systems and is one part of the solution to increase the reliability of wireless systems. More specifically, when increasing the number of base station antennas in a massive MIMO systems the channel variations decrease and the so-called channel hardening effect appears. This means that the variations of the channel gain in time and frequency decrease. In this paper, channel hardening in massive MIMO systems is assessed based on analysis of measurement data. For an indoor scenario, the channels are measured with a 128-port cylindrical array for nine single-antenna users. The analysis shows that in a real scenario a channel hardening of 3.2-4.6 dB, measured as a reduction of the standard deviation of the channel gain, can be expected depending on the amount of user interaction. Excitons and their constituent charge carriers play the central role in electroluminescence mechanisms determining the ultimate performance of organic optoelectronic devices. The involved processes and their dynamics are often studied with time-resolved techniques limited by spatial averaging that obscures the properties of individual electron-hole pairs. Here we overcome this limit and characterize single charge and exciton dynamics at the nanoscale by using time-resolved scanning tunnelling microscopy-induced luminescence (TR-STML) stimulated with nanosecond voltage pulses. We use isolated defects in C$_{60}$ thin films as a model system into which we inject single charges and investigate the formation dynamics of a single exciton. Tuneable hole and electron injection rates are obtained from a kinetic model that reproduces the measured electroluminescent transients. These findings demonstrate that TR-STML can track dynamics at the quantum limit of single charge injection and can be extended to other systems and materials important for nanophotonic devices.

We present ab initio calculations of the superexchange antiferromagnetic spin coupling $J$ for two cuprates, Sr$_2$CuO$_3$ and La$_2$CuO$_4$. Good agreement with experimental estimates is obtained. We find that $J$ increases substantially as the distance between Cu and apical O is increased. There is an important synergetic effect of the Coulomb interaction, expanding the Cu $3d$ orbital when an electron hops into this orbital, and the O-Cu hopping, being increased by this orbital expansion (breathing). This is a new ingredient in superexchange models. In a model with a fixed basis, breathing effects can be described as a mixing of $3d$ and $4d$ orbitals or as a single $3d \to 4d$ excitation.

The nucleation and growth of pure titanium nanoparticles in a low-pressure sputter plasma has been believed to be essentially impossible. The addition of impurities, such as oxygen or water, facilitates this and allows the growth of nanoparticles. However, it seems that this route requires so high oxygen densities that metallic nanoparticles in the hexagonal aTi-phase cannot be synthesized. Here we present a model which explains results for the nucleation and growth of titanium nanoparticles in the absent of reactive impurities. In these experiments, a high partial pressure of helium gas was added which increased the cooling rate of the process gas in the region where nucleation occurred. This is important for two reasons. First, a reduced gas temperature enhances Ti2 dimer formation mainly because a lower gas temperature gives a higher gas density, which reduces the dilution of the Ti vapor through diffusion. The same effect can be achieved by increasing the gas pressure. Second, a reduced gas temperature has a "more than exponential" effect in lowering the rate of atom evaporation from the nanoparticles during their growth from a dimer to size where they are thermodynamically stable, r*. We show that this early stage evaporation is not possible to model as a thermodynamical equilibrium. Instead, the single-event nature of the evaporation process has to be considered. This leads, counter intuitively, to an evaporation probability from nanoparticles that is exactly zero below a critical nanoparticle temperature that is size-dependent. Together, the mechanisms described above explain two experimentally found limits for nucleation in an oxygen-free environment. First, there is a lower limit to the pressure for dimer formation. Second, there is an upper limit to the gas temperature above which evaporation makes the further growth to stable nuclei impossible., Comment: 32 pages, 7 figures

A constant supply of oxygen has been assumed to be necessary for the growth of titanium nanoparticles by sputtering. This oxygen supply can arise from a high background pressure in the vacuum system or from a purposely supplied gas. The supply of oxygen makes it difficult to grow metallic nanoparticles of titanium and can cause process problems by reacting with the target. We here report that growth of titanium nanoparticles in the metallic hexagonal titanium ({\alpha}Ti) phase is possible using a pulsed hollow cathode sputter plasma and adding a high partial pressure of helium to the process instead of trace amounts of oxygen. The helium cools the process gas in which the nanoparticles nucleate. This is important both for the first dimer formation and the continued growth to a thermodynamically stable size. The parameter region where the synthesis of nanoparticles is possible is mapped out experimentally and the theory of the physical processes behind this process window is outlined. A pressure limit below which no nanoparticles were produced was found at 200 Pa, and could be attributed to a low dimer formation rate, mainly caused by a more rapid dilution of the growth material. Nanoparticle production also disappeared at argon gas flows above 25 sccm. In this case the main reason was identified as a gas temperature increase within the nucleation zone, giving a too high evaporation rate from nanoparticles (clusters) in the stage of growth from dimers to stable nuclei. These two mechanisms are in depth explored in a companion paper [1]. We study the relation between the microscopic properties of a many-body system and the electron spectra, experimentally accessible by photoemission. In a recent paper [Phys. Rev. Lett. 114, 236402 (2015)], we introduced the "fluctuation diagnostics" approach, to extract the dominant wave vector dependent bosonic fluctuations from the electronic self-energy. Here, we first reformulate the theory in terms of fermionic modes, to render its connection with resonance valence bond (RVB) fluctuations more transparent. Secondly, by using a large-U expansion, where U is the Coulomb interaction, we relate the fluctuations to real space correlations. Therefore, it becomes possible to study how electron spectra are related to charge, spin, superconductivity and RVB-like real space correlations, broadening the analysis of an earlier work [Phys. Rev. B 89, 245130 (2014)]. This formalism is applied to the pseudogap physics of the two-dimensional Hubbard model, studied in the dynamical cluster approximation. We perform calculations for embedded clusters with up to 32 sites, having three inequivalent K-points at the Fermi surface. We find that as U is increased, correlation functions gradually attain values consistent with an RVB state. This first happens for correlation functions involving the antinodal point and gradually spreads to the nodal point along the Fermi surface. Simultaneously a pseudogap opens up along the Fermi surface. We relate this to a crossover from a Kondo-like state to an RVB-like localized cluster state and to the presence of RVB and spin fluctuations. These changes are caused by a strong momentum dependence in the cluster bath-couplings along the Fermi surface. We present a comprehensive study of the magnetic properties of Sr$_{3-x}$Y$_{x}$(Fe$_{1.25}$Ni$_{0.75}$)O$_{7-\delta}$ ($0 \leq x \leq 0.75$). Experimentally, the magnetic properties are investigated using superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) magnetometry and neutron powder diffraction (NPD). This is complemented by the theoretical study based on density functional theory as well as the Heisenberg exchange parameters. Experimental results show an increase in the N\'eel temperature ($T_N$) with the increase of Y concentrations and O occupancy. The NPD data reveals all samples are antiferromagnetically ordered at low temperatures, which has been confirmed by our theoretical simulations for the selected samples. Our first-principles calculations suggest that the 3D magnetic order is stabilized due to finite inter-layer exchange couplings. The latter give rise to a finite inter-layer spin correlations which disappear above the $T_N$.

Natural IgM autoantibodies have been proposed to convey protection from autoimmune pathogenesis. Herein, we investigated the IgM responses in 396 systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients, divided into subgroups based on distinct autoantibody profiles. Depressed IgM levels were more common in SLE than in matched population controls. Strikingly, an autoreactivity profile defined by IgG anti-Ro/La was associated with reduced levels of specific natural IgM anti-phosphorylcholine (PC) antigens and anti-malondialdehyde (MDA) modified-protein, as well total IgM, while no differences were detected in SLE patients with an autoreactivity profile defined by anti-cardiolipin/Beta2glycoprotein-I. We also observed an association of reduced IgM levels with the HLA-DRB1*03 allelic variant amongst SLE patients and controls. Associations of low IgM anti-PC with cardiovascular disease were primarily found in patients without antiphospholipid antibodies. These studies further highlight the clinical relevance of depressed IgM. We present a stochastic method for solving the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation, generalizing a ground-state full configuration interaction Quantum Monte Carlo method. By performing the time-integration in the complex plane close to the real time axis, the numerical effort is kept manageable and the analytic continuation to real frequencies is efficient. This allows us to perform {\it ab initio} calculation of electron spectra for strongly correlated systems. We extend earlier work of Waldhausen which defines operations on the algebraic $K$-theory of the one-point space. For a connected simplicial abelian group $X$ and symmetric groups $\Sigma_n$, we define operations $\theta^n \colon A(X) \rightarrow A(X{\times}B\Sigma_n)$ in the algebraic $K$-theory of spaces. We show that our operations can be given the structure of $E_{\infty}$-maps. Let $\phi_n \colon A(X{\times}B\Sigma_n) \rightarrow A(X{\times}E\Sigma_n) \simeq A(X)$ be the $\Sigma_n$-transfer. Many use cases in the Internet of Things (IoT) will require or benefit from location information, making positioning a vital dimension of the IoT. The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) has dedicated a significant effort during its Release 14 to enhance positioning support for its IoT technologies to further improve the 3GPP-based IoT eco-system. In this article, we identify the design challenges of positioning support in Long-Term Evolution Machine Type Communication (LTE-M) and Narrowband IoT (NB-IoT), and overview the 3GPP's work in enhancing the positioning support for LTE-M and NB-IoT. We focus on Observed Time Difference of Arrival (OTDOA), which is a downlink based positioning method. We provide an overview of the OTDOA architecture and protocols, summarize the designs of OTDOA positioning reference signals, and present simulation results to illustrate the positioning performance., Comment: 8 pages; 7 figures; 1 table; submitted for publication

Starting from the (Hubbard) model of an atom, we demonstrate that the uniqueness of the mapping from the interacting to the noninteracting Green's function, $G\to G_0$, is strongly violated, by providing numerous explicit examples of different $G_0$ leading to the same physical $G$. We argue that there are indeed infinitely many such $G_0$, with numerous crossings with the physical solution. We show that this rich functional structure is directly related to the divergence of certain classes of (irreducible vertex) diagrams, with important consequences for traditional many-body physics based on diagrammatic expansions. Physically, we ascribe the onset of these highly non-perturbative manifestations to the progressive suppression of the charge susceptibility induced by the formation of local magnetic moments and/or RVB states in strongly correlated electron systems., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures
