The cosmic distance scale largely depends on distance determinations to Local Group galaxies. In this sense, the Andromeda Galaxy (M31) is a key rung to better constrain the cosmic distance ladder. A project was started in 1999 to firmly establish a direct and accurate distance to M31 using eclipsing binaries (EBs). After the determination of the first direct distance to M31 from EBs, the second direct distance to an EB system is presented: M31V_J00443610+4129194. Light and radial velocity curves were obtained and fitted to derive the masses and radii of the components. The acquired spectra were combined and disentangled to determine the temperature of the components. The analysis of the studied EB resulted in a distance determination to M31 of (m-M)o = 24.30 +/- 0.11 mag. This result, when combined with the previous distance determination to M31, results in a distance modulus of (m-M)o = 24.36 +/- 0.08 mag (744 +/- 33 kpc), fully compatible with other distance determinations to M31. With an error of only 4%, the obtained value firmly establishes the distance to this important galaxy and represents the fulfillment of the main goal of our project.

Red Dwarfs (main-sequence / dwarf M or dM) stars are the most common stars in the Galaxy. These cool, faint, low mass stars comprise over 75% of all stars. Because of their low luminosities (~0.0008-0.06 of the Sun's luminosity), the circumstellar habitable zones (HZs) of dM stars are located within ~0.05-0.4 AU of the host star. Nevertheless, the prospect of life on a planet located within the HZ of a red dwarf is moderately high, based on the longevity of these stars (>50 Gyr), their constant luminosities and high space densities. Here we describe the aims and early results of the "Living with a Red Dwarf" Program - a study of dM stars that we have been carrying out over the last few years. The primary focus of our research on dM stars is the study of their magnetic dynamos and resulting star spots & coronal X-ray and chromospheric UV emissions as a function of age, rotation and spectral type. This program will provide datasets that can be used as inputs for the study of all aspects of dM stars, along with the planets already discovered hosted by them and the probable hundreds (thousands?) of planets expected to be uncovered in the near future by missions such as Kepler & Darwin/TPF. These datasets will be invaluable to those who model exo-planetary atmospheres, as well as exobiologists & astrobiologists who are studying the possibilities of life elsewhere in the universe. A significant element of our program is the determination of accurate stellar magnetic-driven X-ray-UV (X-UV) irradiances that are generated by the dM stars' vigorous magnetic dynamos. The eclipsing and strongly interacting binary star system R Arae (HD149730) is in a very active and very short-lived stage of its evolution. R Ara consists of a B9V primary and an unknown secondary. We have collected the International Ultraviolet Explorer (IUE) archival data on R Ara, with most of the data being studied for the first time. There are 117 high resolution IUE spectra taken in 1980, 1982, 1985, 1989, and 1991. We provide photometric and spectroscopic evidence for mass transfer and propose a geometry for the accretion structure. We use colour scale radial velocity plots to view the complicated behavior of the blended absorption features and to distinguish the motions of hotter and cooler regions within the system. We observed a primary eclipse of R Ara in 2008 and have verified that its period is increasing. We summarize some of the compelling new scientific opportunities for understanding stars and stellar systems that can be enabled by sub-mas angular resolution, UV/Optical spectral imaging observations, which can reveal the details of the many dynamic processes (e.g., variable magnetic fields, accretion, convection, shocks, pulsations, winds, and jets) that affect their formation, structure, and evolution. These observations can only be provided by long-baseline interferometers or sparse aperture telescopes in space, since the aperture diameters required are in excess of 500 m - a regime in which monolithic or segmented designs are not and will not be feasible - and since they require observations at wavelengths (UV) not accessible from the ground. Two mission concepts which could provide these invaluable observations are NASA's Stellar Imager (SI; http://hires.gsfc.nasa.gov/si/) interferometer and ESA's Luciola sparse aperture hypertelescope, which each could resolve hundreds of stars and stellar systems. These observatories will also open an immense new discovery space for astrophysical research in general and, in particular, for Active Galactic Nuclei (Kraemer et al. Decadal Survey Science Whitepaper). The technology developments needed for these missions are challenging, but eminently feasible (Carpenter et al. Decadal Survey Technology Whitepaper) with a reasonable investment over the next decade to enable flight in the 2025+ timeframe. Multi-wavelength studies of solar analogs (G0-5 V stars) with ages from ~50 Myr to 9 Gyr have been carried out as part of the "Sun in Time" program for nearly 20 yrs. From these studies it is inferred that the young (ZAMS) Sun was rotating more than 10x faster than today. As a consequence, young solar-type stars and the early Sun have vigorous magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) dynamos and correspondingly strong coronal X-ray and transition region / chromospheric FUV-UV emissions. To ensure continuity and homogeneity for this program, we use a restricted sample of G0-5 V stars with masses, radii, T(eff), and internal structure (i.e. outer convective zones) closely matching those of the Sun. From these analogs we have determined reliable rotation-age-activity relations and X-ray - UV (XUV) spectral irradiances for the Sun (or any solar-type star) over time. These XUV irradiance measures serve as input data for investigating the photo-ionization and photo-chemical effects of the young, active Sun on the paleo-planetary atmospheres and environments of solar system planets. These measures are also important to study the effects of these high energy emissions on the numerous exoplanets hosted by solar-type stars of different ages. Recently we have extended the study to include lower mass, main-sequence (dwarf) dK and dM stars to determine relationships among their rotation spin-down rates and coronal and chromospheric emissions as a function of mass and age. From rotation-age-activity relations we can determine reliable ages for main-sequence G, K, M field stars and, subsequently, their hosted planets. Red Dwarf (dM) stars are overwhelmingly the most numerous stars in our Galaxy. These cool, faint and low mass stars make up more than 80% of all stars. Also dM stars have extremely long life times (longer than 50-100 Gyr). Determining the number of red dwarfs with planets and assessing planetary habitability (a planet's potential to develop and sustain life) is critically important because such studies would indicate how common life is in the universe. Our program - "Living with a Red Dwarf" - addresses these questions by investigating the long-term nuclear evolution and the coronal and chromospheric properties of red dwarf stars with widely different ages (~50 Myr -- 12 Gyr). One major focus of the program is to study the magnetic-dynamo generated coronal and chromospheric X-ray--FUV/UV emissions and flare properties of a sample of dM0--5 stars. Observations carried out by FUSE of a number of young to old dM stars provide important data for understanding transition region heating in these stars with deep convective zones as well as providing measures of FUV irradiances. Also studied are the effects of X-ray--FUV emissions on possible hosted planets and impacts of this radiation on their habitability. Using these data we are constructing irradiance tables (X-UV irradiances) that can be used to model the effects of XUV radiation on planetary atmospheres and possible life on planetary surfaces. We report on the surprising recent discovery of strong FUV emissions in two bright, nearby Classical Cepheids from analyses of FUSE archival observations and one of our own approved observations just prior to the failure of the satellite. Polaris and beta Dor are currently the only two Cepheids to have been observed with FUSE, and beta Dor is the only one to have multiple spectra. Both Cepheids show strong C III (977A, 1176A) and O VI (1032A, 1038A) emissions, indicative of 50,000-500,000 K plasma, well above the photospheric temperatures of the stars. More remarkably, beta Dor displays variability in the FUV emission strengths which appears to be correlated to its 9.84-d pulsation period. This phenomenon has never before been observed in Cepheids. The FUV studies are presented along with our recent Chandra/XMM X-ray observations of Polaris and beta Dor, in which X-ray detections were found for both stars (as well as for the prototype Classical Cepheid, delta Cep). Further X-ray observations have been proposed to unambiguously determine the origin and nature of the observed high energy emissions from the targets, possibly arising from warm winds, shocks, or pulsationally induced magnetic activity. Spectroscopic and eclipsing binary systems offer the best means for determining accurate physical properties of stars, including their masses and radii. The data available for low-mass stars have yielded firm evidence that stellar structure models predict smaller radii and higher effective temperatures than observed, but the number of systems with detailed analyses is still small. In this paper, we present a complete reanalysis of one of such eclipsing systems, CM Dra, composed of two dM4.5 stars. New and existing light curves as well as a radial velocity curve are modeled to measure the physical properties of both components. The masses and radii determined for the components of CM Dra are M1 = 0.2310 ± 0.0009 Msun, M2 = 0.2141 ± 0.0010 Msun, R1 = 0.2534 ± 0.0019 Rsun, and R2 = 0.2396 ± 0.0015 Rsun. With relative uncertainties well below the 1% level, these values constitute the most accurate properties to date for fully convective stars. This makes CM Dra a valuable benchmark for testing theoretical models. In comparing our measurements with theory, we confirm the discrepancies previously reported for other low-mass eclipsing binaries. These discrepancies seem likely to be due to the effects of magnetic activity. We find that the orbit of this system is slightly eccentric, and we have made use of eclipse timings spanning three decades to infer the apsidal motion and other related properties.

Division V deals with all aspects of stellar variability, either intrinsic or due to eclipses by its companion in a binary system. In the case of intrinsic stellar variability the analysis of pulsating stars, surface inhomogeneities, stellar activity and oscillations are considered. For close binaries, classical detached eclipsing binaries are studied as well as more interacting systems, like contact and semi-detached binaries, or those with compact components, like cataclysmic variables and X-ray binaries, including the physics of accretion processes.

Polaris, the nearest and brightest classical Cepheid, is a member of at least a triple system. It has a wide (18") physical companion, the F-type dwarf Polaris B. Polaris itself is a single-lined spectroscopic binary with an orbital period of ~30 years (Kamper 1996). By combining Hipparcos measurements of the instantaneous proper motion with long-term measurements and the Kamper radial-velocity orbit, Wielen et al. (2000) have predicted the astrometric orbit of the close companion. Using the Hubble Space Telescope and the Advanced Camera for Surveys' High-Resolution Channel with an ultraviolet (F220W) filter, we have now directly detected the close companion. Based on the Wielen et al. orbit, the Hipparcos parallax, and our measurement of the separation (0".176 +or- 0".002), we find a preliminary mass of 5.0 +or- 1.5 M(circle dot solar) for the Cepheid and 1.38 +or- 0.61 M(circle dot solar) for the close companion. These values will be refined by additional HST observations scheduled for the next 3 years. We have also obtained a Chandra ACIS-I image of the Polaris field. Two distant companions C and D are not X-rays sources and hence are not young enough to be physical companions of the Cepheid. There is one additional stellar X-ray source in the field, located 253" from Polaris A, which is a possible companion. An overview is presented of the many new and exciting developments in binary and multiple star studies that were discussed at IAU Symposium 240. Impacts on binary and multiple star studies from new technologies, techniques, instruments, missions and theory are highlighted. It is crucial to study binary and multiple stars because the vast majority of stars (>60%) in our Galaxy and in other galaxies consist, not of single stars, but of double and multiple star systems. To understand galaxies we need to understand stars, but since most are members of binary and multiple star systems, we need to study and understand binary stars. The major advances in technology, instrumentation, computers, and theory have revolutionized what we know (and also don't know) about binary and multiple star systems. Data now available from interferometry (with milliarcsecond [mas] and sub-mas precisions), high-precision radial velocities (<1-2 m/s) and high precision photometry (<1 2 milli-mag) as well as the wealth of new data that are pouring in from panoramic optical and infrared surveys (e.g., >10,000 new binaries found since 1995), have led to a renaissance in binary star and multiple star studies. For example, advances have lead to the discovery of new classes of binary systems with planet and brown dwarf components (over 200 systems). Also, extremely valuable data about binary stars are available across the entire electromagnetic spectrum from gamma-ray to IR space missions and from the ground using increasingly more powerful and plentiful optical and radio telescopes as well as robotic telescopes. In the immediate future, spectral coverage could even be extended beyond the radio to the first detection of gravity waves from interacting close binaries.
