107. Opportunity for All: 2019 State of Michigan Education Report

- Abstract
Since the launch of the Michigan Achieves! campaign, the Education Trust-Midwest (ETM) has tracked Michigan's performance and progress towards the goal of becoming a top ten state for education opportunity and achievement, focusing on key data-driven indicators. It's important for Michiganders to understand how the state's students are performing compared to other states and the nation overall, especially in a globally connected and competitive world. Data from the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), which is the largest nationally representative assessment that provides for long-term comparisons of what America's students know and can do in various subject areas, can help provide this national perspective. Results from leading education states on the NAEP assessment -- also commonly known as the national assessment or the Nation's Report Card -- show that it's possible to improve education outcomes dramatically. There are many other indicators, which ETM reports on annually, that also signal that Michigan's trajectory needs to change. They are: (1) Student Attendance; (2) Access to Rigorous Coursework; (3) College Readiness; and (4) College Attainment. A recent poll of Michigan parents conducted by EPIC-MRA and The Education Trust-Midwest entailed phone interviews with 600 parents in Michigan with one or more children age 18 or younger. This major survey was conducted to better understand how parents-essential stake holders in public education, think about issues impacting children. Results are telling: (1) Quality Education is "the" Top Concern; (2) Parents support both transparent accountability "and" equitable school funding; and (3) Parents believe effective teachers matter. Unlike political discourse on the topic, the vast majority of parents support using data on student learning as a significant factor in evaluating teacher performance. As Michigan leaders across sectors look for areas to improve student learning, ETM details recommendations rooted in best practice, as well as baseling data, on five high leverage focal areas: (1) Early Childhood to Third Grade' (2) Equitable Funding; (3) Systems of Data, Transparency and Accountability; (4) Top Talent: Effective Educators and School Leaders; and (5) Transition to College and Postsecondary Opportunities.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic disease that presents with a range of physical and emotional challenges, that exacerbate difficulties in initiating and maintaining behaviour changes. Sustainable behaviour change is important for people with MS because of the relationship with modifiable healthy lifestyle factors, such as healthy diet, regular exercise and smoking cessation, and improved disease outcomes and quality of life. Research assessing theoretically based behaviour change interventions in MS has highlighted gaps with their application, particularly in addressing emotional and coping resource challenges. CEOS theory is a behaviour change theory, developed to help understand hard to maintain behaviour change, and useful to guide interventions aimed at sustainable behaviour change. It is a dual processing theory that considers top-down executive and bottom-up operational processes, including the influence of affective processes, within the context of personal and environmental resources and challenges. We present CEOS theory to guide development of sustainable behaviour change interventions for people with MS, supported by case study examples of its application. We encourage its use in the development of behaviour change interventions, given it provides a holistic framework, which considers the additional challenges of behaviour change faced by people with MS and other complex medical conditions., Author(s): L. 110. Acute lymphocytic myocarditis presenting as complete heart block in an adult: a case report

Abstract Background Complete heart block (CHB) as a first presentation of acute viral myocarditis is a rare occurrence associated with increased morbidity and mortality. In such cases, an endomyocardial biopsy is recommended to make a clear histological diagnosis aiding to differentiate from other possible conditions such as sarcoiditic myocarditis, giant cell myocarditis, and eosinophilic myocarditis. Insertion of a permanent pacemaker may be considered on a case-to-case basis. Case presentation A previously healthy 21-year-old female presented to the emergency department after having suffered two episodes of syncope on a background of a few days’ history of myalgias, chills, and rigors. Electrocardiogram showed high-grade Mobitz II block with intermittent periods of CHB. A bedside echocardiogram upon admission demonstrated normal biventricular systolic function. Given the patient’s unstable haemodynamic status and lack of obvious reversible causes for the CHB, a permanent dual-chamber pacemaker was inserted urgently. Initial blood investigations indicated an ongoing inflammatory process highlighting the possibility of myocarditis as a cause of the CHB. Therefore, a troponin level was taken and was noted to be elevated confirming the suspicion of myocarditis. The left ventricular ejection fraction (LVEF) decreased over the following days to approximately 20%, clinically resulting in pulmonary oedema and acute shortness of breath. The patient required aggressive intravenous diuresis and anti-heart failure medication. An endomyocardial biopsy (EMB) confirmed the diagnosis of lymphocytic myocarditis. The patient’s condition improved secondary to an improvement in LVEF and resolution of the heart block. A cardiac magnetic resonance (CMR) imaging performed 6 weeks from admission reported an improved LVEF of 51% with no late gadolinium enhancement (LGE). Based on the reassuring CMR findings and the resolution of CHB on follow-up pacemaker checks, it was deemed safe to explant the pacemaker. Conclusions Acute myocarditis may be complicated with high-degree AV block and cardiogenic shock necessitating close observation in a critical care unit. A permanent pacemaker may provide atrio-ventricular synchrony which helps stabilise the patient’s condition and protect from a prolonged period of heart block. Early myocardial fibrosis on EMB and degree of LGE on CMR are indicators of persistent atrioventricular block. Guideline-directed treatment of heart failure is essential.

111. The Sex Ratio at Birth Is Higher in Māori Than in Non-Māori Populations in Aotearoa New Zealand

Aims: The sex ratio at birth approximates 0.515 (male : total, M/T), with 515 boys per 485 girls. Many factors have been shown to influence M/T including acute and chronic stress. Increasing maternal age is associated with a decline in M/T. In Aotearoa New Zealand, circa 15% of the population identify as of Māori heritage. This populationis generally considered to be socioeconomically disadvantaged. This study analysed M/T for Māori and non-Māori M/T births in Aotearoa New Zealand and relates these to mean maternal age at delivery. Methods: Live births by sex and maternal age at delivery were available from the website of Tatauranga Aotearoa Stats NZ for 1997–2021. Results: This study analysed 1,474,905 births (28.4% Māori) Pooled data shows that Māori M/T is significantly higher than non-Māori M/T (chi = 6.8, p = 0.009). Mean maternal age at delivery was less for Māori mothers but this was not statistically significant. Conclusions: Several studies have shown that M/T is decreased in socioeconomically deprived populations, and for this reason Māori M/T is expected to be lower and not higher than non-Māori M/T. A lower mean maternal age at delivery might have explained the M/T differences noted in this analysis but this was not a statistically significant difference.

The distinguishing number $D(G,X)$ of an action of a group $G$ on a set $X$ is the least size of a partition of $X$ such that no element of $G$ acting nontrivially on $X$ preserves this partition. In this paper we describe the distinguishing numbers for all actions of the symmetric group $S_n$, for any $n\geq 3$. This allows us to describe the distinguishing numbers for all graphs whose automorphism group is isomorphic with a symmetric group. Our description solves a few open problems posed by various authors in earlier papers on this topic.

Over the past decade, millions of companies have filed for bankruptcy. This has been caused by a plethora of reasons, namely, high interest rates, heavy debts and government regulations. The effect of a company going bankrupt can be devastating, hurting not only workers and shareholders, but also clients, suppliers and any related external companies. One of the aims of this paper is to provide a framework for company bankruptcy to be predicted by making use of financial figures, provided by our external dataset, in conjunction with the sentiment of news articles about certain sectors. News articles are used to attempt to quantify the sentiment on a company and its sector from an external perspective, rather than simply using internal figures. This work builds on previous studies carried out by multiple researchers, to bring us closer to lessening the impact of such events.

A new experimental platform based on laser-plasma interaction is proposed to explore the fundamental processes of wave coupling at the origin of interplanetary radio emissions. It is applied to the study of electromagnetic (EM) emission at twice the plasma frequency ($2\omega_p$) observed during solar bursts and thought to result from the coalescence of two Langmuir waves (LWs). In the interplanetary medium, the first LW is excited by electron beams, while the second is generated by electrostatic decay of Langmuir waves. In the present experiment, instead of an electron beam, an energetic laser propagating through a plasma excites the primary LW, with characteristics close to those at near-Earth orbit. The EM radiation at $2\omega_p$ is observed at different angles. Its intensity, spectral evolution and polarization confirm the LW-coalescence scenario., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. This review aims at providing an up-to-date status and a general introduction to the subject of the numerical study of energetic particle acceleration and transport in turbulent astrophysical flows. The subject is also complemented by a short overview of recent progresses obtained in the domain of laser plasma experiments. We review the main physical processes at the heart of the production of a non-thermal distribution in both Newtonian and relativistic astrophysical flows, namely the first and second order Fermi acceleration processes. We also discuss shock drift and surfing acceleration, two processes important in the context of particle injection in shock acceleration. We analyze with some details the particle-in-cell (PIC) approach used to describe particle kinetics. We review the main results obtained with PIC simulations in the recent years concerning particle acceleration at shocks and in reconnection events. The review discusses the solution of Fokker-Planck problems with application to the study of particle acceleration at shocks but also in hot coronal plasmas surrounding compact objects. We continue by considering large scale physics. We describe recent developments in magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations. We give a special emphasize on the way energetic particle dynamics can be coupled to MHD solutions either using a multi-fluid calculation or directly coupling kinetic and fluid calculations. Weakly magnetized, relativistic collisionless shock waves are not only the natural offsprings of relativistic jets in high-energy astrophysical sources, they are also associated with some of the most outstanding displays of energy dissipation through particle acceleration and radiation. Perhaps their most peculiar and exciting feature is that the magnetized turbulence that sustains the acceleration process, and (possibly) the secondary radiation itself, is self-excited by the accelerated particles themselves, so that the phenomenology of these shock waves hinges strongly on the microphysics of the shock. Three dimensional Particle in Cell simulations of Laser Wakefield Acceleration require a considerable amount of resources but are necessary to have realistic predictions and to design future experiments. The planned experiments for the Apollon laser also include two stages of plasma acceleration, for a total plasma length of the order of tens of millimeters or centimeters. In this context, where traditional 3D numerical simulations would be unfeasible, we present the results of the application of a recently proposed envelope method, to describe the laser pulse ant its interaction with the plasma without the need to resolve its high frequency oscillations. Introduction Tobacco smoking poses a significant threat to the health of individuals living with diabetes. Intensive stand-alone smoking cessation interventions, such as multiple or long (>20 minutes) behavioral support sessions focused solely on smoking cessation, with or without the use of pharmacotherapy, increase abstinence when compared to brief advice or usual care in the general population. However, there is limited evidence so far for recommending the use of such interventions amongst individuals with diabetes. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of intensive stand-alone smoking cessation interventions for individuals living with diabetes and to identify their critical features. Methods A systematic review design with the addition of a pragmatic intervention component analysis using narrative methods was adopted. The key terms ‘diabetes mellitus’ and ‘smoking cessation’ and their synonyms were searched in 15 databases in May 2022. Randomized controlled trials which assessed the effectiveness of intensive stand-alone smoking cessation interventions by comparing them to controls, specifically amongst individuals with diabetes, were included. Results A total of 15 articles met the inclusion criteria. Generally, the identified studies reported on the delivery of a multi-component behavioral support smoking cessation intervention for individuals with type I and type II diabetes, providing biochemically verified smoking abstinence rates at follow-up at six months. The overall risk-of-bias of most studies was judged to be of some concern. Despite observing inconsistent findings across the identified studies, interventions consisting of three to four sessions, lasting more than 20 min each, were found to be more likely to be associated with smoking cessation success. The additional use of visual aids depicting diabetes-related complications may also be useful. Conclusions This review provides evidence-based smoking cessation recommendations for use by individuals with diabetes. Nonetheless, given that the findings of some studies were found to be possibly at risk-of-bias, further research to establish the validity of the provided recommendations is suggested.

Diagnosis is clinical, characterized by a vesiculopustular eruption, healing with residual hyperpigmented macules. Before diagnosing TNPM, serious conditions including skin infections should be excluded. This case was unusual in that vesiculobullae predominated, with a notable absence of simple pustules.

137. Intensive sea urchin harvest rescales Paracentrotus lividus population structure and threatens self-sustenance

The harvest of the edible sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus is intensively practiced in some regions of the Western Mediterranean Sea. The removal of the largest individuals can determine an overall reduction in population size and a size class truncation that can lead to a drastic drop the self-sustenance. The aim of this study is to evaluate the variability of the population reproductive potential across 5 years in one of the main harvest hotspots of Sardinia (Western Mediterranean Sea). The breeding stock consists of commercial and under-commercial size individuals which were sampled on a monthly basis to estimate their GonadoSomatic Index (GSI) and the Individual Gamete Output (IGO). In addition, the reproductive potential of the population—Total Gamete Output (TGO)—was calculated across the 5-year period in relation with the variation of the density of the breeding stock. During the last year, the reproductive potential was also estimated in a well-conserved population of a nearby Marine Protected Area. No significant variability in GSI and IGO was found over the 5 years nor when compared with the ones of protected population in the last year. However, the intensive harvest drastically rescaled the population body-size: although density of the commercial size class remained low, density of the under-commercial size-class halved from the beginning to the end of the study. Accordingly, the proportional decrease of their gamete output contribution led to a 40% loss of the reproductive potential of the whole population in the 5-year period. Interestingly, despite the loss of reproductive potential due to the decrease of the breeding stock density, the average values of IGO slightly increased across the years leading to the highest Annual Gamete Output (AGO) during the fourth year of sampling. This positive pattern could suggest a mechanism of reproductive investments of the survivors in terms of gonad production rate or increase in spawning intensity. This work provides evidence of the direct effect of size-selective harvesting on the rapid loss of population self-sustenance. Furthermore, it lays new prospective for future research of the indirect effects of the rescaling population body-size in functional traits of the sea urchin P. lividus and that could become important for both, sustainable exploitation and ecosystem conservation management.

142. Beetle mania: Understanding pond aquatic beetles diversity patterns through a multiple-facet approach

Ecological studies searching for drivers of biodiversity variation have frequently focused on taxonomic richness. However, more aspects of biodiversity, namely diversity facets can be considered to properly assess biotic-environment relationships. Here, we explore the environmental factors that could control the four biodiversity facets of aquatic Coleoptera from 93 regionally sampled Patagonian ponds. We also explore which are the ponds with high diversity values of all facets to prioritize them with a high conservation value. We fitted generalized additive models (GAM) to test relationships among environment (i.e., local and climatic variables) and aquatic beetles diversity facets (i.e., richness (SD), functional diversity (FD), phylogenetic diversity (PD), and local contribution to local beta diversity (LCBD). Climatic drivers were the most important predictors of beetle diversity facets, which exhibited linear and nonlinear responses. Thus, ponds from warmer Patagonia exhibited the highest values of SD and PD, whereas LCBD also peaked on colder sites suggesting that ponds under extreme temperatures sustain unique beetle assemblages. Moreover, ponds located in areas with higher precipitation variability exhibit the highest values of LCBD (i.e., unique assemblages). This result in addition to arid conditions in Patagonia prevailing since 16 m.y.a made us think that Patagonian beetle pond-dwellers are basally adapted to aridity. We calculated an index that summarizes the four facets patterns, to assign high conservation value to those ponds with higher index values. The relative importance of each facet varies from pond to pond. Hence, this multifaceteded approach not only allows us to identify priority areas for biodiversity conservation but also focuses on the importance of including multiple facets to understand biodiversity spatial patterns.

Background: This study assessed the potential cost-effectiveness of high (80–100%) vs low (21–35%) fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2) at preventing surgical site infections (SSIs) after abdominal surgery in Nigeria, India, and South Africa. Methods: Decision-analytic models were constructed using best available evidence sourced from unbundled data of an ongoing pilot trial assessing the effectiveness of high FiO2, published literature, and a cost survey in Nigeria, India, and South Africa. Effectiveness was measured as percentage of SSIs at 30 days after surgery, a healthcare perspective was adopted, and costs were reported in US dollars ($). Results: High FiO2 may be cost-effective (cheaper and effective). In Nigeria, the average cost for high FiO2 was $216 compared with $222 for low FiO2 leading to a −$6 (95% confidence interval [CI]: −$13 to −$1) difference in costs. In India, the average cost for high FiO2 was $184 compared with $195 for low FiO2 leading to a −$11 (95% CI: −$15 to −$6) difference in costs. In South Africa, the average cost for high FiO2 was $1164 compared with $1257 for low FiO2 leading to a −$93 (95% CI: −$132 to −$65) difference in costs. The high FiO2 arm had few SSIs, 7.33% compared with 8.38% for low FiO2, leading to a −1.05 (95% CI: −1.14 to −0.90) percentage point reduction in SSIs. Conclusion: High FiO2 could be cost-effective at preventing SSIs in the three countries but further data from large clinical trials are required to confirm this.

Laser-generated plasma gratings are dynamic optical elements for the manipulation of coherent light at high intensities, beyond the damage threshold of solid-stated based materials. Their formation, evolution and final collapse require a detailed understanding. In this paper, we present a model to explain the nonlinear dynamics of high amplitude plasma gratings in the spatially periodic ponderomotive potential generated by two identical counter-propagating lasers. Both, fluid and kinetic aspects of the grating dynamics are analyzed. It is shown that the adiabatic electron compression plays a crucial role as the electron pressure may reflect the ions from the grating and induce the grating to break in an X-type manner. A single parameter is found to determine the behaviour of the grating and distinguish three fundamentally different regimes for the ion dynamics: completely reflecting, partially reflecting/partially passing, and crossing. Criteria for saturation and life-time of the grating as well as the effect of finite ion temperature are presented.

The automorphism group of the composition of graphs $G \circ H$ contains the wreath product $Aut(H) \wr Aut(G)$ of the automorphism groups of the corresponding graphs. The classical problem considered by Sabidussi and Hemminger was under what conditions $G \circ H$ has no other automorphisms. In this paper we deal with the converse. If the automorphism group of a graph (or a colored graph or digraph) is the wreath product $A \wr B$ of permutation groups, then the graph must be the result of the corresponding construction. The question we consider is whether $A$ and $B$ must be the automorphism groups of graphs involved in the construction. We solve this problem, generally in positive, for the wreath product in its natural imprimitive action (which refers to the results by Sabidussi and Hemminger). Yet, we consider also the same problems for the wreath product in its product action, which turns out to be more complicated and leads to interesting open questions involving other combinatorial structures.

We consider the problem of characterizing the class of those permutation groups that are the symmetry groups of Boolean functions. These are exactly the automorphism groups of hypergraphs. They are also called the relation groups. In this paper we describe those of them that are simple as abstract groups. This is done by combining results based on the classification of finite simple groups with the description of intransitive actions of simple groups. We also obtain a complete characterization of those simple permutation groups that have regular sets, and prove that (with one exception) if a simple permutation group G is a relation group, then every subgroup of G is a relation group.

In this paper we characterize permutation groups that are automorphism groups of coloured graphs and digraphs and are abelian as abstract groups. This is done in terms of basic permutation group properties. Using Schur's classical terminology, what we provide is characterizations of the classes of 2-closed and $2*$-closed abelian permutation groups. This is the first characterization concerning these classes since they were defined.

The problem of describing the invariance groups of unordered relations, called briefly \emph{relation groups}, goes back to classical work by H. Wielandt. In general, the problem turned out to be hard, and so far it has been settled only for a few special classes of permutation groups. The problem have been solved, in particular, for the class of primitive permutation groups, using the classification of finite simple groups and other deep results of permutation group theory. In this paper we show that, if $G$ is a finite simple primitive permutation group other then the alternating group $A_n$, then each subgroup of $G$, with four exceptions, is a relation group.
