103. Formation of 6H-Ba3Ce0.75Mn2.25O9during Thermochemical Reduction of 12R-Ba4CeMn3O12: Identification of a Polytype in the Ba(Ce,Mn)O3Family

Abstract

The resurgence of interest in a hydrogen economy and the development of hydrogen-related technologies has initiated numerous research and development efforts aimed at making the generation, storage, and transportation of hydrogen more efficient and affordable. Solar thermochemical hydrogen production (STCH) is a process that potentially exhibits numerous benefits such as high reaction efficiencies, tunable thermodynamics, and continued performance over extended cycling. Although CeO2has been the de facto standard STCH material for many years, more recently 12R-Ba4CeMn3O12(BCM) has demonstrated enhanced hydrogen production at intermediate H2/H2O conditions compared to CeO2, making it a contender for large-scale hydrogen production. However, the thermo-reduction stability of 12R-BCM dictates the oxygen partial pressure (pO2) and temperature conditions optimal for cycling. In this study, we identify the formation of a 6H-BCM polytype at high temperature and reducing conditions, experimentally and computationally, as a mechanism and pathway for 12R-BCM decomposition. 12R-BCM was synthesized with high purity and then controllably reduced using thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). Synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD) data is used to identify the formation of a 6H-Ba3Ce0.75Mn2.25O9(6H-BCM) polytype that is formed at 1350 °C under strongly reducing pO2. Density functional theory (DFT) total energy and defect calculations show a window of thermodynamic stability for the 6H-polytype consistent with the XRD results. These data provide the first evidence of the 6H-BCM polytype and could provide a mechanistic explanation for the superior water-splitting behaviors of 12R-BCM.

Abstract

Abstract Background Structured association mapping is proving to be a powerful strategy to find genetic polymorphisms associated with disease. However, these algorithms are often distributed as command line implementations that require expertise and effort to customize and put into practice. Because of the difficulty required to use these cutting-edge techniques, geneticists often revert to simpler, less powerful methods. Results To make structured association mapping more accessible to geneticists, we have developed an automatic processing system called Auto-SAM. Auto-SAM enables geneticists to run structured association mapping algorithms automatically, using parallelization. Auto-SAM includes algorithms to discover gene-networks and find population structure. Auto-SAM can also run popular association mapping algorithms, in addition to five structured association mapping algorithms. Conclusions Auto-SAM is available through GenAMap, a front-end desktop visualization tool. GenAMap and Auto-SAM are implemented in JAVA; binaries for GenAMap can be downloaded from http://sailing.cs.cmu.edu/genamap.

122. A simple chemical guide for finding novel n-type dopable Zintl pnictide thermoelectric materials.

Abstract

Computations have predicted good thermoelectric performance for a number of Zintl phases when doped n-type. Combined with the successful experimental realization of n-type KGaSb4, KAlSb4, and Mg3Sb2 with zT ≳ 1, this has fueled efforts to discover novel n-type dopable Zintl phases. However, a majority of Zintl phases exhibit strong proclivity toward p-type doping and prior successes in finding n-type dopable Zintls were largely serendipitous. Herein we use modern first-principles defect calculations to study trends in the dopability of Zintl pnictides and find that the average oxidation state of the anion is a useful chemical guide to identify novel n-type dopable phases. Specifically, we observe that Zintl pnictides with average oxidation of the anion near −1 are n-type dopable. The trend is mainly a consequence of the high formation energy of native acceptor defects (e.g. cation vacancies) and the resulting absence of charge (electron) compensation. Using the oxidation state guide in conjunction with a descriptor of thermoelectric performance, we conduct a large-scale materials search and identify promising candidates that are n-type dopable. Abstract

In this paper we describe the approaches adopted to generate the runs submitted to ImageCLEFPhoto 2009 with an aim to promote document diversity in the rankings. Four of our runs are text based approaches that employ textual statistics extracted from the captions of images, i.e. MMR [1] as a state of the art method for result diversification, two approaches that combine relevance information and clustering techniques, and an instantiation of Quantum Probability Ranking Principle. The fifth run exploits visual features of the provided images to re-rank the initial results by means of Factor Analysis. The results reveal that our methods based on only text captions consistently improve the performance of the respective baselines, while the approach that combines visual features with textual statistics shows lower levels of improvements.

Abstract

The objective of this paper is to address the problem and reaching out to the solution of the best possible technique for modulating a signal so as to transfer it successfully over a channel while ensuring the speed and robustness of the channel. The main purpose of doing so is to upgrade the performance of the PLC mainly for smart grid applications. To achieve this there is a requirement to go through the glimpse of history and approach towards exploration of most recent technological advances in this field. To do so the very first step is to do the circuit analysis and modeling of the indoor power line communication and the second is the determination of control and traffic problems. Then we will approach toward the channel analysis using different modulation schemes, at the very same time the speed and robustness of the channel should be the very first requirement, so OFDM could be one of the best candidate, however in case of interfacing between wired and wireless communication (as required in case of long haul communication and power failure) CDMA could prove to be a more useful one. 147. LaMnO3Dopants for Efficient Thermochemical Water Splitting Identified by Density Functional Theory Calculations

Abstract

While ceria is the standard material for two-step water splitting, perovskites are emerging as viable alternatives. In this work, based on the orthorhombic LaMnO3supercell, we substitute Li Na K Rb Mg Ca Sr Ba on the A-sites (La sites) and Al Ga In Mg Zn on the B-sites (Mn sites) at a concentration of 37.5%. The range of temperature and oxygen partial pressure at which each composition is stable is predicted. For compositions that are stable in relevant temperature and pressure ranges, the oxygen vacancy formation energies are determined for all of the oxygen vacancy site positions available in the computational supercell. Mg, Ca, Sr, and Ba A-site-substituted LaMnO3and Al and In B-site-substituted LaMnO3meet these two criteria for candidates in solar-thermal water splitting applications. Oxygen vacancy formation energy can also be controlled by adjusting the doping strategy.

Abstract

The article presents a case study of the technique to distract the kidney safely during upper pole punctures. The technique involved the placement of a through-and-through lower pole wire under gentle caudal traction. It was considered to have the potential in reducing intrathoracic complications during supracostal renal access while allowing the surgeon to place an ideal access into the calyx. It was performed safely with no increased morbidity.

Abstract

The generalized stacking fault (SFE) energy curves of pure gold (Au) and its binary alloys with transition metals are determined from density functional theory (DFT). Alloy elements Ag, Al, Cu, Ni, Ti, Zr, Zn, In, Ga, Sn, Mn, Cd, Sn, Ta and Cr are substituted into Au at concentrations up to 4%. A comparison of various proposed methodologies to calculate SFEs is given. The intrinsic SFE decreases for all alloying elements from its value for pure Au, but SFE energies (both stable and unstable) vary strongly with the distance of the alloying element from the stacking fault region, and with alloy concentration. The compositional dependence of the SFE on the volume change associated with alloying element is determined. This work demonstrates that the SFE is strongly influenced by misfit strain caused by the alloying elements. Moreover, the computed generalized SFE curves provide information valuable to developing an understanding of the deformation behavior of Au and Au-alloys. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
