Our understanding of warm dense matter (WDM) properties will help to unravel the formation and evolution of giant planet, including gaseous giants or mega-Earths. However, the production of WDM in the laboratory is limited to samples on the order of tens of micrometers. This raises many challenges to measure the properties of WDM using standard diagnostics. In this paper, we propose a new method to produce WDM samples using pulsed-power machines. We numerically demonstrate that the early expansion phase of the sample, usually encountered in pulsed-power systems, can be virtually eliminated using a current switching scheme. To avoid mixing the plasma and WDM states, the present strategy uses a gas-puff $Z$ -pinch as a closing plasma switch. During the first part of the discharge, most of the current flows inside a gas-puff $Z$ -pinch, preventing the heating of the sample. During this phase, the gas $Z$ -pinch radially converges toward the sample. When the $Z$ -pinch finally reaches the sample, all the $Z$ -pinch current switches to the sample and rapidly heats it. The strong azimuthal field generated by the $Z$ -pinch prevents the expansion of the sample. If the initial gas pressure is carefully chosen, the sample reaches a quasi-homogeneous WDM state. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS), unsteady RANS (URANS), and large eddy simulation (LES) numerical approaches are clear candidates for the understanding of turbine blade flows. For such blades, the flow unsteady nature appears critical in certain situations and URANS or LES should provide more physical understanding as illustrated here for a laboratory high outlet subsonic Mach blade specifically designed to ease numerical validation. Although RANS offers good estimates of the mean isentropic Mach number and boundary layer thickness, LES and URANS are the only approaches that reproduce the trailing edge flow. URANS predicts the mean trailing edge wake but only LES offers a detailed view of the flow. Indeed, LESs identify flow phenomena in agreement with the experiment, with sound waves emitted from the trailing edge separation point that propagate upstream and interact with the lower blade suction side [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Aerodynamic instabilities such as stall and surge may occur in compressors, possibly leading to mechanical failures so their avoidance is crucial. A better understanding of those phenomena and an accurate prediction are necessary to improve both the performance and the safety. A surge event in a compressor threatens the mechanical integrity of the aircraft engine, and this remains true for a research compressor on a test rig. As a result, few experimental data on surge are available. Moreover, there are technological, restrictive constraints that exist on test rigs and limit severely the type of data obtainable experimentally. This partially explains why numerical simulation has become a usual, complementaiy and convenient tool to collect data in a compressor, as it does not disturb the flow nor does it encounter technological limits. Despite the inherent difficulties, an entire surge cycle has been simulated in a high-speed, high-pressure, multistage research compressor, using an implicit, time-accurate, 3D compressible unsteady Reynoldsaveraged Navier-Stokes solver. First, the paper presents the main features of the surge cycle obtained, along with those from the experimental cycle, for a validation purpose. Four phases compose the surge cycle: surge inception, the reversed-flow phase, the recovery phase, and the repressurization of the compressor flow. Aerodynamic instabilities such as stall and surge may lead to mechanical failures. They can be avoided by better understanding and accurate prediction of the associated flow phenomena. Numerical simulations of rotating stall do not often match well the experiments as the number of cells and/or their rotational speed are not correctly predicted. The volumes surrounding the compressor have known effects on rotating stall flow patterns; therefore, an increased need for more realistic simulations has emerged. In that context, this paper addresses a comparison of numerical stall simulation in a compressor alone with a numerical stall simulation including the additional compressor rig. This study investigates the influence of the upstream and downstream volumes of the compressor rig on the rotating stall flow patterns and the consequences on surge inception in a high-pressure, high-speed research compressor. The numerical simulations were conducted using an implicit, time-accurate, 3D compressible Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) solver. First, rotating stall is simulated in both configurations, and then the outlet nozzles are further closed to bring the compressors to surge. The numerical results show that when the compressor rig is accounted for, fewer cells develop in the third stage and their rotational speed is slightly higher. The major difference linked to the presence of the rig lays in the existence of a ID low frequency oscillation of the static pressure, which affects the entire flow and modifies surge inception. The analysis of the results leads to a calculation of the thermo-acoustic modes in the whole configuration, which shows that this low frequency corresponds to the third thermo-acoustic mode of the complete test-rig. This magnetic compression of cylindrical liners filled with DT gas has promise as an efficient way to achieve fusion burn using pulsed-power machines. However, to avoid rapid cooling of the fuel by transfer of heat to the liner an axial magnetic field is required. This field has to be compressed during the implosion since the thermal insulation is more demanding as the compressed DT plasma becomes hotter and its volume smaller. This compression of the magnetic field is driven both by the imploding liner and plasma. To highlight how this magnetic field compression by the plasma and liner evolves we have separately studied Z-pinch implosions generated by gas puff and liner loads. The masses of the gas puff and liner loads were adjusted to match COBRA's current rise times. Our results have shown that Ne gas-puff implosions are well described by a snowplow model where electrical currents are predominately localized to the outer surface of the imploding plasma and the magnetic field is external to the imploding plasma. Liner implosions are dominated by the plasma ablation process on the inside surface of the liner and the electrical currents and magnetic fields are advected into the inner plasma volume; the sharp radial gradient associated with the snowplow process is not present. Individual wires in a Z-pinch were replaced with twisted pairs of wires, i.e., “cables.” We define a cable here as two or more fine wires twisted together to form a continuous strand with a twist wavelength \lambdat, dependent on the number of twists per unit length. Imploding Al cable array Z-pinches show a \lambdat-dependent increase in peak power above 1 keV. X-pinch backlighter radiography of nonimploding Ni and Cu cable arrays shows axially repeating shocklike structures. This paper describes the investigations peiformed to better understand unsteady flows that develop in a three-stage high-pressure compressor. More specifically, this study focuses on rotor-stator interactions and tip leakage flow effects on overall performance and aerodynamic stability. The investigation method is based on three-dimensional unsteady RANS simulations, considering the natural spatial periodicity of the compressor. Indeed, all information related to rotor-stator interactions can be computed. A comparison is first done with experimental measurements to outline the capacity of the numerical method to predict overall performance and unsteady flows. The results show that the simulation correctly estimates most flow features in the multistage compressor. Then numerical data obtained for three configurations of the same compressor are analyzed and compared. Configurations 1 and 2 consider two sets of tip clearance dimensions and a casing treatment based on a honeycomb design is applied for configuration 3. Detailed investigations of the flow at the same operating line show that the tip leakage flow is responsible for the loss of stability in the last stage. An increase by 30% of the tip clearance dimension dramatically reduces the stable operating range (by 40% with respect to the standard configuration). A modal analysis shows that the stall process in this case involves the perturbation of the flow in the last rotor by upstream stator wakes, leading to the development of a rotating instability. The control device designed and investigated in this study allows for reducing the sensitivity of the compressor to tip leakage flow by recovering the initial stable operating range. In the absence of instabilities, the large deterministic scales of turbomachinery flows resulting from the periodic rotation of blades can be considered periodic in time. Such flows are not simulated with enough efficiency when using classical unsteady techniques as a transient regime must be by-passed. New techniques, dedicated to time-periodic flows and based on Fourier analysis, have been developed recently. Among these, harmonic balance methods cast a time-periodic flow computation in several coupled stead)' flow computations. A time-domain harmonic balance method is derived and adapted to phase lag periodic conditions to allow the simnulation of only one blade passage per row regardless of row blade counts. Sophisticated space and time interpolations are involved and detailed. The test case is a single stage subsonic compressor. A convergence study of the present harmonic balance is performed and compared with a reference well-resolved classical unsteady flow simulation. The results show, on one hand, the good behavior of the harmonic balance and its ability to correctly predict global quantities as well as local flow pattern; on the other hand, the simulation time is drastically reduced. With the increase in computing power, large eddy simulation (LES) emerges as a promising technique to improve both knowledge of complex physics and reliability of turbomachinery flow predictions. However, these simulations are very expensive for industrial applications, especially when a 360 deg configuration should be considered. The objective of this paper is thus to adapt the well-known phase-lagged conditions to the LES approach by replacing the traditional Fourier series decomposition (FSD) with a compression method that does not make any assumptions on the spectrum of the flow. Several methods are reviewed, and the proper orthogonal decomposition (POD) is retained. This new method is first validated on a flow around a circular cylinder with rotating downstream blocks. The results show significant improvements with respect to the FSD. It is then applied to unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) simulations of a single-stage compressor in 2.5D and 3D as a first validation step toward single-passage LES of turbomachinery configuration. This paper deals with the numerical simulation of technologies to increase the compressor performances. The objective is to extend the stable operating range of an axial compressor stage using passive control devices located in the tip region. First, the behavior of the tip leakage flow is investigated in the compressor without control. The simulation shows an increase in the interaction between the tip leakage flow and the main flow when the mass flow is reduced, a phenomenon responsible for the development of a large flow blockage region at the rotor leading edge. A separation of the rotor suction side boundary layer is also observed at near stall conditions. Then, two approaches are tested in order to control these flows in the tip region. The first one is a casing treatment with nonaxisymmetric slots. The method showed a good ability to control the tip leakage flow but failed to reduce the boundary layer separation on the suction side. However an increase in the operability was observed but with a penalty for the efficiency. The second approach is a blade treatment that consists of a longitudinal groove built in the tip of each rotor blade. The simulation pointed out that the device is able to control partially all the critical flows with no penalty for the efficiency. Abstract Background The cellular prion protein (PrPc) is a host-encoded glycoprotein whose transconformation into PrP scrapie (PrPSc) initiates prion diseases. The role of PrPc in health is still obscure, but many candidate functions have been attributed to the protein, both in the immune and the nervous systems. Recent data show that experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) is worsened in mice lacking PrPc. Disease exacerbation has been attributed to T cells that would differentiate into more aggressive effectors when deprived of PrPc. However, alternative interpretations such as reduced resistance of neurons to autoimmune insult and exacerbated gliosis leading to neuronal deficits were not considered. Method To better discriminate the contribution of immune cells versus neural cells, reciprocal bone marrow chimeras with differential expression of PrPc in the lymphoid or in the central nervous system (CNS) were generated. Mice were subsequently challenged with MOG35-55 peptide and clinical disease as well as histopathology were compared in both groups. Furthermore, to test directly the T cell hypothesis, we compared the encephalitogenicity of adoptively transferred PrPc-deficient versus PrPc-sufficient, anti-MOG T cells. Results First, EAE exacerbation in PrPc-deficient mice was confirmed. Irradiation exacerbated EAE in all the chimeras and controls, but disease was more severe in mice with a PrPc-deleted CNS and a normal immune system than in the reciprocal construction. Moreover, there was no indication that anti-MOG responses were different in PrPc-sufficient and PrPc-deficient mice. Paradoxically, PrPc-deficient anti-MOG 2D2 T cells were less pathogenic than PrPc-expressing 2D2 T cells. Conclusions In view of the present data, it can be concluded that the origin of EAE exacerbation in PrPc-ablated mice resides in the absence of the prion protein in the CNS. Furthermore, the absence of PrPc on both neural and immune cells does not synergize for disease worsening. These conclusions highlight the critical role of PrPc in maintaining the integrity of the CNS in situations of stress, especially during a neuroinflammatory insult.

Inertial confinement fusion approaches involve the creation of high-energy-density states through compression. High gain scenarios may be enabled by the beneficial heating from fast electrons produced with an intense laser and by energy containment with a high-strength magnetic field. Here, we report experimental measurements from a configuration integrating a magnetized, imploded cylindrical plasma and intense laser-driven electrons as well as multi-stage simulations that show fast electrons transport pathways at different times during the implosion and quantify their energy deposition contribution. The experiment consisted of a CH foam cylinder, inside an external coaxial magnetic field of 5 T, that was imploded using 36 OMEGA laser beams. Two-dimensional (2D) hydrodynamic modelling predicts the CH density reaches 9.0 g cm−3 , the temperature reaches 920 eV and the external B-field is amplified at maximum compression to 580 T. At pre-determined times during the compression, the intense OMEGA EP laser irradiated one end of the cylinder to accelerate relativistic electrons into the dense imploded plasma providing additional heating. The relativistic electron beam generation was simulated using a 2D particle-in-cell (PIC) code. Finally, three-dimensional hybrid-PIC simulations calculated the electron propagation and energy deposition inside the target and revealed the roles the compressed and self-generated B-fields play in transport. During a time window before the maximum compression time, the self-generated B-field on the compression front confines the injected electrons inside the target, increasing the temperature through Joule heating. For a stronger B-field seed of 20 T, the electrons are predicted to be guided into the compressed target and provide additional collisional heating. Background: To phase out fossil fuels and reach a carbon-neutral future, solar energy and notably photovoltaic (PV) installations are being rapidly scaled up. Unlike other types of renewable energies such as wind and hydroelectricity, evidence on the effects of PV installations on biodiversity has been building up only fairly recently and suggests that they may directly impact ecosystems and species through, for instance, habitat change and loss, mortality, behaviour alteration or population displacements. Hence, we conducted a systematic map of existing evidence aiming at answering the following question: what evidence exists regarding the effects of PV installations on wild terrestrial and semi-aquatic species?, Methods: We searched for relevant citations on four online publication databases, on Google Scholar, on four specialised websites and through a call for grey literature. Citations were then screened for eligibility in order to only retain citations referring to wild terrestrial and semi-aquatic species as well as PV and solar thermal installations, therefore excluding concentrated solar power. Accepted articles were first split into studies (corresponding to one experimental design) subjected to critical appraisal and then further split into observations (i.e. one population and one outcome) during metadata extraction. The current state of the literature was characterised and knowledge clusters and gaps identified., Review Findings: Searching captured 8121 unique citations, which resulted in 158 relevant articles being accepted after screening. Even though the first article was published in 2005, the publication rate increased rapidly in 2020. The 97 included primary research and modelling articles were split into 137 unique studies and rated with either a low (43.8%), a high (41.6%) or an unclear overall risk of bias (14.6%) after internal validity assessment. Studies were further split into 434 observations, mainly carried out in the United States (23.0%) and the United Kingdom (21.0%), preferentially in temperate climates (64.5%). Plants and arthropods were the two most studied taxa (41.7% and 26.3%, respectively). Utility-scale solar energy (USSE) facilities were most often investigated (70.1%). Observations mainly focused on the effect of the presence of PV installations (51.8%). Species abundance, community composition and species diversity were the most common outcomes assessed (23.0%, 18.4% and 16.1%, respectively)., Conclusions: Three knowledge clusters for which a systematic review should be contemplated were identified: (i) the effects of PV installations on plant and (ii) arthropod communities and, (iii) their effects at a larger ecosystem scale on overall species abundance. However, the currently available evidence regarding the effects of photovoltaic installations on biodiversity is still scarce. More research is urgently needed on non-flying mammals and bats as well as amphibians and reptiles. Solar thermal panels and floating PV installations should also be further investigated. Studies comparing different designs of PV installations, management practices or contexts should be conducted as well. Indeed, more evidence is still needed to allow decision-makers to accurately and reliably select the types of PV installations and management practices that are least damaging to biodiversity., (© 2023.
