101. Fluoroarene Separations in Metal–Organic Frameworks with Two Proximal Mg2+ Coordination Sites

Abstract

Fluoroarenes are widely used in medicinal, agricultural, and materials chemistry, and yet their production remains a critical challenge in organic synthesis. Indeed, the nearly identical physical properties of these vital building blocks hinders their purification by traditional methods, such as flash chromatography or distillation. As a result, the Balz-Schiemann reaction is currently employed to prepare fluoroarenes instead of more atom-economical C-H fluorination reactions, which produce inseparable mixtures of regioisomers. Herein, we propose an alternative solution to this problem: the purification of mixtures of fluoroarenes using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). Specifically, we demonstrate that controlling the interaction of fluoroarenes with adjacent coordinatively unsaturated Mg2+ centers within a MOF enables the separation of fluoroarene mixtures with unparalleled selectivities. Liquid-phase multicomponent equilibrium adsorption data and breakthrough measurements coupled with van der Waals-corrected density functional theory calculations reveal that the materials Mg2(dobdc) (dobdc4- = 2,5-dioxidobenzene-1,4-dicarboxylate) and Mg2(m-dobdc) (m-dobdc4- = 2,4-dioxidobenzene-1,5-dicarboxylate) are capable of separating the difluorobenzene isomers from one another. Additionally, these frameworks facilitate the separations of fluoroanisoles, fluorotoluenes, and fluorochlorobenzenes. In addition to enabling currently unfeasible separations for the production of fluoroarenes, our results suggest that carefully controlling the interaction of isomers with not one but two strong binding sites within a MOF provides a general strategy for achieving challenging liquid-phase separations.

Abstract

There is a renewed interest in the derivation of statistical mechanics from the dynamics of closed quantum systems. A central part of this program is to understand how far-from-equilibrium closed quantum system can behave as if relaxing to a stable equilibrium. Equilibration dynamics has been traditionally studied with a focus on the so-called quenches of large-scale many-body systems. Alternatively, we consider here the equilibration of a molecular model system describing the double proton transfer reaction in porphine. Using numerical simulations, we show that equilibration in this context indeed takes place and does so very rapidly ($\sim \!\! 200$fs) for initial states induced by pump-dump laser pulse control with energies well above the synchronous tunneling barrier.

Abstract

We address the problem of designing micro-fluidic chips for sample preparation, which is a crucial step in many experimental processes in chemical and biological sciences. One of the objectives of sample preparation is to dilute the sample fluid, called reactant, using another fluid called buffer, to produce desired volumes of fluid with prespecified reactant concentrations. In the model we adopt, these fluids are manipulated in discrete volumes called droplets. The dilution process is represented by a mixing graph whose nodes represent 1-1 micro-mixers and edges represent channels for transporting fluids. In this work we focus on designing such mixing graphs when the given sample (also referred to as the target) consists of a single-droplet, and the objective is to minimize total fluid waste. Our main contribution is an efficient algorithm called RPRIS that guarantees a better provable worst-case bound on waste and significantly outperforms state-of-the-art algorithms in experimental comparison.

115. Substituent Effects on Exchange Coupling and Magnetic Relaxation in 2,2′-Bipyrimidine Radical-Bridged Dilanthanide Complexes

Abstract

Systematic analysis of related compounds is crucial to the design of single-molecule magnets with improved properties, yet such studies on multinuclear lanthanide complexes with strong magnetic coupling remain rare. Herein, we present the synthesis and magnetic characterization of the series of radical-bridged dilanthanide complex salts [(Cp*2Ln)2(μ-5,5'-R2bpym)](BPh4) (Ln = Gd, Dy; R = NMe2 (1), OEt (2), Me (3), F (4); bpym = 2,2'-bipyrimidine). Modification of the substituent on the bridging 5,5'-R2bpym radical anion allows the magnetic exchange coupling constant, JGd-rad, for the gadolinium compounds in this series to be tuned over a range from -2.7 cm-1 (1) to -11.1 cm-1 (4), with electron-withdrawing or -donating substituents increasing or decreasing the strength of exchange coupling, respectively. Modulation of the exchange coupling interaction has a significant impact on the magnetic relaxation dynamics of the single-molecule magnets 1-Dy through 4-Dy, where stronger JGd-rad for the corresponding Gd3+ compounds is associated with larger thermal barriers to magnetic relaxation (Ueff), open magnetic hysteresis at higher temperatures, and slower magnetic relaxation rates for through-barrier processes. Further, we derive an empirical linear correlation between the experimental Ueff values for 1-Dy through 4-Dy and the magnitude of JGd-rad for the corresponding gadolinium derivatives that provides insight into the electronic structure of these complexes. This simple model applies to other organic radical-bridged dysprosium complexes in the literature, and it establishes clear design criteria for increasing magnetic operating temperatures in radical-bridged molecules.

Precisely locating extra-framework cations in anionic metal-organic framework compounds remains a long-standing, yet crucial, challenge for elucidating structure-performance relationships in functional materials. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction is one of the most powerful approaches for this task, but single crystals of frameworks often degrade when subjected to post-synthetic metalation or reduction. Here, we demonstrate the growth of sizable single crystals of the robust metal-organic framework Fe2(bdp)3 (bdp2- = benzene-1,4-dipyrazolate) and employ single-crystal-to-single-crystal chemical reductions to access the solvated framework materials A2Fe2(bdp)3·yTHF (A = Li+, Na+, K+). X-ray diffraction analysis of the sodium and potassium congeners reveals that the cations are located near the center of the triangular framework channels and are stabilized by weak cation-π interactions with the framework ligands. Freeze-drying with benzene enables isolation of activated single crystals of Na0.5Fe2(bdp)3 and Li2Fe2(bdp)3 and the first structural characterization of activated metal-organic frameworks wherein extra-framework alkali metal cations are also structurally located. Comparison of the solvated and activated sodium-containing structures reveals that the cation positions differ in the two materials, likely due to cation migration that occurs upon solvent removal to maximize stabilizing cation-π interactions. Hydrogen adsorption data indicate that these cation-framework interactions are sufficient to diminish the effective cationic charge, leading to little or no enhancement in gas uptake relative to Fe2(bdp)3. In contrast, Mg0.85Fe2(bdp)3 exhibits enhanced H2 affinity and capacity over the non-reduced parent material. This observation shows that increasing the charge density of the pore-residing cation serves to compensate for charge dampening effects resulting from cation-framework interactions and thereby promotes stronger cation-H2 interactions.

118. Influence of Pore Size on Carbon Dioxide Diffusion in Two Isoreticular Metal–Organic Frameworks

Abstract

The rapid diffusion of molecules in porous materials is critical for numerous applications including separations, energy storage, sensing, and catalysis. A common strategy for tuning guest diffusion rates is to vary the material pore size, although detailed studies that isolate the effect of changing this particular variable are lacking. Here, we begin to address this challenge by measuring the diffusion of carbon dioxide in two isoreticular metal-organic frameworks featuring channels with different diameters, Zn2(dobdc) (dobdc4- = 2,5-dioxidobenzene-1,4-dicarboxylate) and Zn2(dobpdc) (dobpdc4- = 4,4′-dioxidobiphenyl-3,3′-dicarboxylate), using pulsed field gradient NMR spectroscopy. An increase in the pore diameter from 15 Å in Zn2(dobdc) to 22 Å in Zn2(dobpdc) is accompanied by an increase in the self-diffusion of CO2 by a factor of 4 to 6, depending on the gas pressure. Analysis of the diffusion anisotropy in Zn2(dobdc) reveals that the self-diffusion coefficient for motion of CO2 along the framework channels is at least 10000 times greater than for motion between the framework channels. Our findings should aid the design of improved porous materials for a range of applications where diffusion plays a critical role in determining performance.

137. Towards a Theory of Mixing Graphs: A Characterization of Perfect Mixability

Abstract

Some microfluidic lab-on-chip devices contain modules whose function is to mix two fluids, called reactant and buffer, in desired proportions. In one of the technologies for fluid mixing the process can be represented by a directed acyclic graph whose nodes represent micro-mixers and edges represent micro-channels. A micro-mixer has two input channels and two output channels; it receives two fluid droplets, one from each input, mixes them perfectly, and produces two droplets of the mixed fluid on its output channels. Such a mixing graph converts a set I of input droplets into a set T of output droplets, where the droplets are specified by their reactant concentrations. The most fundamental algorithmic question related to mixing graphs is to determine, given an input set I and a target set T, whether there is a mixing graph that converts I into T. We refer to this decision problem as mix-reachability. While the complexity of this problem remains open, we provide a solution to its natural sub-problem, called perfect mixability, in which we ask whether, given a collection C of droplets, there is a mixing graph that mixes C perfectly, producing only droplets whose concentration is the average concentration of C. We provide a complete characterization of such perfectly mixable sets and an efficient algorithm for testing perfect mixability. Abstract

A Y-linked two-sex branching process with mutations and blind choice of males is a suitable model for analyzing the evolution of the number of carriers of an allele and its mutations of a Y-linked gene. Considering a two-sex monogamous population, in this model each female chooses her partner from among the male population without caring about his type (i.e., the allele he carries). In this work, we deal with the problem of estimating the main parameters of such model developing the Bayesian inference in a parametric framework. Firstly, we consider, as sample scheme, the observation of the total number of females and males up to some generation as well as the number of males of each genotype at last generation. Later, we introduce the information of the mutated males only in the last generation obtaining in this way a second sample scheme. For both samples, we apply the Approximate Bayesian Computation (ABC) methodology to approximate the posterior distributions of the main parameters of this model. The accuracy of the procedure based on these samples is illustrated and discussed by way of simulated examples.

Abstract

The wheel tracking test (WTT) has been extensively used for laboratory characterization of permanent deformation of hot mix asphalt (HMA). However, the fully-confined setup of the device is unable to capture the tertiary zone where shear deformation takes place. This makes the permanent deformation resistance characteristics of HMA difficult to analyze. Hence, a modified wheel tracker (MWT), with unconfined lateral sides along the wheel tracking direction was utilized in this study, which can capture the tertiary flow (referred to as the flow number (FN)). The dynamic creep test, which yields FN, is a common laboratory test which has the ability to characterize permanent deformation considering the shear behavior. The study investigated the relationship of the MWT and the dynamic creep test utilizing the permanent deformation and permanent microstrain data from the respective tests. A novel parameter, FN-Index was explored. The permanent deformation parameters derived from the MWT were well correlated with the dynamic creep test.
