Charcoal production has often been neglected in national or regional plans/studies dealing with the management of forest biomass residuesin Portugal. However, charcoal is one of the oldest biofuels produced in Europe, especially used in metallurgy activities and as cooking fuel, with production sites and methods known for millennia. Likewise, some Portuguese villagesare well known for their historical link with charcoal production, although the current situation of this activity at the national level is poorly known. To promote more efficient charcoal production, basic data regarding the widely used feedstocks, technologies, infrastructure,and main products/by-products were collected through an extensive field monitoring program combined with the analysis of satellite imagery. Our results show that charcoal production in Portugal mainly relies on rudimentary technologies and traditional methods, with rather scarce development in the last decades. The results also show that charcoal production is an important economic activity in the southern part of the country, as evidenced by the number and size of active production sites reported in this work, thus playing a relevant role in the management of certain woody residues and producing considerable amounts of valuable products for well-established markets in Portugal and Europe., Proceedings of the 30th European Biomass Conference and Exhibition, 9-12 May 2022, Online, pp. 980-985

- Abstract
Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a potentially serious liver disease that affects approximately one-quarter of the global adult population, causing a substantial burden of ill health with wide-ranging social and economic implications. It is a multisystem disease and is considered the hepatic component of metabolic syndrome. Unlike other highly prevalent conditions, NAFLD has received little attention from the global public health community. Health system and public health responses to NAFLD have been weak and fragmented, and, despite its pervasiveness, NAFLD is largely unknown outside hepatology and gastroenterology. There is only a nascent global public health movement addressing NAFLD, and the disease is absent from nearly all national and international strategies and policies for non-communicable diseases, including obesity. In this global Delphi study, a multidisciplinary group of experts developed consensus statements and recommendations, which a larger group of collaborators reviewed over three rounds until consensus was achieved. The resulting consensus statements and recommendations address a broad range of topics — from epidemiology, awareness, care and treatment to public health policies and leadership — that have general relevance for policy-makers, health-care practitioners, civil society groups, research institutions and affected populations. These recommendations should provide a strong foundation for a comprehensive public health response to NAFLD. © 2021, Springer Nature Limited.

Purpose: To evaluate patients with resolved versus confirmed ARDS, identify subgroups with substantial mortality risk, and to determine the utility of day 2 ARDS reclassification. Methods: Our primary objective, in this secondary LUNG SAFE analysis, was to compare outcome in patients with resolved versus confirmed ARDS after 24 h. Secondary objectives included identifying factors associated with ARDS persistence and mortality, and the utility of day 2 ARDS reclassification. Results: Of 2377 patients fulfilling the ARDS definition on the first day of ARDS (day 1) and receiving invasive mechanical ventilation, 503 (24%) no longer fulfilled the ARDS definition the next day, 52% of whom initially had moderate or severe ARDS. Higher tidal volume on day 1 of ARDS was associated with confirmed ARDS [OR 1.07 (CI 1.01–1.13), P = 0.035]. Hospital mortality was 38% overall, ranging from 31% in resolved ARDS to 41% in confirmed ARDS, and 57% in confirmed severe ARDS at day 2. In both resolved and confirmed ARDS, age, non-respiratory SOFA score, lower PEEP and P/F ratio, higher peak pressure and respiratory rate were each associated with mortality. In confirmed ARDS, pH and the presence of immunosuppression or neoplasm were also associated with mortality. The increase in area under the receiver operating curve for ARDS reclassification on day 2 was marginal. Conclusions: ARDS, whether resolved or confirmed at day 2, has a high mortality rate. ARDS reclassification at day 2 has limited predictive value for mortality. The substantial mortality risk in severe confirmed ARDS suggests that complex interventions might best be tested in this population. Zusammenfassung Eine Systemarchitektur sollte die entsprechenden Funktionen, Dienste und Einschränkungen des Systems unter verschiedenen und verständlichen Beschreibungen darstellen. In dieser Arbeit werden Strategien für Architekturentwurfe vorgestellt und für Echtzeit- und Eingebettete Systeme (RTES) analysiert. In diesem Artikel präsentieren wir ein praktisches Entwurfsmodell einer Architektur für Automobilsysteme anhand von sogenannten Entwurfs-Sichtweisen. Modelle werden in den operativen, funktionalen, logischen und technischen Sichtweisen eines Systems betrachtet und können bei frühen Entwurfsbeschreibungen mehrere funktionale und nicht funktionale Eigenschaften von RTES darstellen. Der vorgeschlagene Ansatz wird in einer industriellen Fallstudie im Automobilbereich evaluiert. Zusätzlich zur Definition der Sichtweisen stellt diese Untersuchung einen spezifischen Rahmen für die RTES-Entwicklung vor. Diese Strategie des Entwurfs kann die Eigenschaften der RTES hervorheben und das System auf verschiedenen Abstraktionsebenen beschreiben. Darüber hinaus wird durch Experteninterviews aus den jeweiligen Systementwurfsdomänen eine Qualitative Bewertung vorgenommen, um zu analysieren, ob die Modelle der entsprechenden Sichtweisen das erwartete und gewünschte Systemverhalten repräsentieren.

While not generally considered a risk factor, we present 2 cases in which ketogenic diet (KD) may have played a role in liver injury due to antituberculosis drugs. Atualmente, cada vez mais as pessoas recorrem ao termalismo para melhorar a saúde na sua ampla dimensão, com destaque para o bemestar, incluindo o relaxamento, alívio de stress, depressão, e mesmo recuperação e reservatório de energias. Os tratamentos termais proporcionam uma harmonia corporal integral e condições para prevenir possíveis patologias, inclusive de cariz mental e social, visando uma melhor qualidade de vida e do sono. Objetivo: Este estudo teve com objetivo aprofundar os conhecimentos sobre termalismo, avaliar a qualidade de vida e de sono em dois momentos distintos, antes e após os 14 dias de tratamentos termais. Metodologia: Para responder ao objetivo traçado, realizou-se um estudo exploratório, quantitativo, descritivo, inferencial e longitudinal. Aplicou-se um questionário presencial, aleatoriamente, a 90 termalistas que frequentaram o termalismo clássico nas termas de Chaves entre junho e outubro de 2020. O questionário incluiu variáveis socioprofissionais, um instrumento genérico de avaliação da qualidade de vida (SF-36v2) e o instrumento de avaliação da qualidade de sono, (Índice de Qualidade de Sono de Pittsburgh). Este trabalho se propõe a discutir a natureza das interações entre especialistas do ensino de ciências e da engenharia civil no âmbito de um núcleo de pesquisa, na compreensão do caminho epistemológico de construção da interdisciplinaridade no ensino de ciências. Ao longo de 2007 foram realizadas quinze reuniões do núcleo com a participação de professores de ciências de diferentes níveis e professores engenheiros. Seis dessas reuniões, filmadas em VHS e transcritas, foram selecionadas para a análise. Considerando a natureza epistemológica complexa da interdisciplinaridade e a necessária renovação do ensino de ciências, nossa análise aponta para a necessidade de que novos diálogos, aportados por uma compreensão ampla das bases científicas modernas, sejam promovidos nos diferentes níveis de produção e apropriação da ciência.

A large number of studies support the concept that high salt intake is the main risk factor in increasing blood pressure and cardiovascular diseases in the population. The main objective of this study is to analyze consumers preliminary satisfaction questionnaires regarding the use of an innovative prototype equipment to monitor and control salt during cooking the Salt Control H (SCH) during their participation in one clinical trial. Most of the participants (37.5%) reported that stayed very satisfied with the use of the equipment (overall satisfaction) and 78.1% of participants would like to recommend the SCH to a friend. This acceptance study shows satisfactory results, even though it is a prototype version, to encourage the use of this innovative equipment in order to improve familys tools to healthier cooking. RESUMO Introdução Segundo a Organização Mundial de Saúde, no ano de 2017, as doenças musculosqueléticas foram as que mais contribuíram para a incapacidade global. Considerando o exercício de funções em contexto profissional como uma componente essencial no quotidiano do ser humano, é neste ambiente que surgem muitas destas lesões. As graves repercussões económicas, laborais e sociais que este tipo de lesões pode provocar remete-nos para a importância de analisar a prevalência atual destes eventos em diversas indústrias, bem como as zonas corporais mais afetadas. Métodos Foi realizada uma pesquisa de literatura nas bases de dados Pubmed e Web of Science, de artigos publicados após 2015. Os descritores utilizados foram “employee”, “skeletal muscle”, “injuries” e “industry/sectory”. Esta pesquisa resultou em 132 artigos, dos quais em 37 foi efetuada uma revisão ao texto completo e avaliação de qualidade dos mesmos, o que permitiu selecionar 15 artigos para uma análise consequente. Resultados Entre as diversas indústrias, a de curtumes foi a que apresentou maior prevalência global de lesões músculo-esqueléticas (89,1%), sendo de 94,5% no género feminino e de 85% no género masculino. De uma forma geral, a prevalência deste tipo de lesões em trabalhadores de diversas indústrias rondou os 70%. Na maioria das indústrias analisadas (como a alimentar, construção civil e têxtil), a zona dorsal/ lombar foi a zona mais descrita como origem destas lesões, com exceção da indústria da impressão, que reportou maior prevalência ao nível do ombro. Contudo, a zona dorsal foi a região menos identificada na indústria da impressão sendo substituída, neste caso, pela região do ombro. Discussão / Conclusão De uma forma geral, e de acordo com os dados obtidos, os trabalhadores industriais são afetados por uma prevalência de lesões músculo-esqueléticas que pode variar entre cerca de 55% e 90%. As regiões do corpo mais afetadas incluem a zona dorsal, seguida de ombros, membros inferiores e pescoço. O género feminino demonstrou ser mais suscetível de contrair lesões músculo-esqueléticas, no que respeita a trabalhadores industriais.

The genus Cedrela P. Browne, which belongs to the Meliaceae family, has eighteen species. Trees of this genus are of economic interest due to wood quality, as well as being the focus of studies because of relevant biologic activities as in other Meliaceae species. These activities are mainly related to limonoids, a characteristic class of compounds in this family. Therefore, the aim of this review is to perform a survey of the citations in the literature on the Cedrela genus species. Articles were found on quantitative and qualitative phytochemical studies of the Cedrela species, revealing the chemical compounds identified, such as aliphatics acid and alcohol, flavonoids, tocopherol, monoterpenes, sesquiterpenes, triterpenes, cycloartanes, steroids, and limonoids. Although some activities were tested, the majority of studies focused on the insecticidal, antifeedant, or insect growth inhibitor activities of this genus. Nonetheless, the most promising activities were related to their antimalarial and antitripanocidal effects, although further investigations are still needed.

Nanoparticles (NPs) can be from natural or anthropogenic sources. There are countless naturally occurring examples. Self-assembly in biology plays several important roles and triggers the formation of a wide variety of complex biological structures. Anthropogenic NPs are man-made and, similar to the naturally occurring ones, are very wide-ranging, being created through well-designed fabrication processes. Anthropogenic NPs can be classified into four subtypes: carbon-based materials, metal-based materials, dendrimers and composites. The incidence of bone disorders and other conditions around the globe has been growing, mostly due to aging together with obesity and poor physical activity. Bones are vascularized living tissues, known by their role in providing the body with shape and support, recognized by its complexity and for being in a constant process of renewal. There is plenty of room for new approaches that apply the NPsâ potential in tailoring the treatment of bone defects.
