The article examines the plight of German students studying in the University of Oxford during the first months of World War I. Topics discussed include the formation of a committee for processing undergraduates who will become war volunteers and the initiation of the Vacation Course for Foreign Students, with half of the students coming from the Axis Powers. The dependence of German students on government funding for their stay and the challenges of repatriation are also mentioned.

Abstract

This paper examines the international context in which American social science was institutionalized in the generation after the Civil War, following the foundation of the American Social Science Association in 1865. The ASSA was modelled on an influential British forum, founded eight years previously, the National Association for the Promotion of Social Science. A comparison of these two organisations from the 1860s to the 1880s allows consideration of British intellectual and political influences on the first American social scientists. It also helps in the identification of the social and political attitudes of the well-born, cosmopolitan, and high-minded American reformers attracted to social science at this time. The theme of American exceptionalism has recently been emphasized when considering the motives and intentions of early social science in the United States. It is argued here that the replication in America of models of the new discipline which were first developed in Britain, is indicative also of a self-conscious internationalism among the American social-scientific community of this period. In addition to an institutional comparison, the article examines the careers and ideas of several representative figures in this process of Anglo-American liberal transference, among them the physician Dr. Edward Jarvis, the feminist Caroline Healey Dall, the jurist David Dudley Field, and the famed British interpreter of American experience, James Bryce. The author criticizes Goldman for not discussing the political dimensions of social science. In reply, Goldman defends his earlier article and suggests that some of the points raised by Elwitt were covered in other articles.

Abstract

A study is reported of the extent of satisfaction/dissatisfaction, for 710 billet incumbents of the aerographer's mate (AG) rating, based on 33 job factors and two overall measures of satisfaction. Differences, if any, based on military paygrade, reenlistment intention, sex, and mental ability level for these billet incumbents are studied. In terms of all AG's, those job factors which are relatively more satisfying and relatively more dissatisfying are ascertained. Recommendations are made to improve upon the analysis of job satisfaction in other Navy ratings. (Author Modified Abstract)

Abstract

The investigation is a study of specific subject areas of the aircrew survival equipmentman (PR) rating. Attention was given to those functional task areas found to be inconsistent with the amount of training received in the PR Class A and PR Class B schools. The PR NEC's, utilization of equipment and an aspect of safety were also studied. Job satisfaction factors and worker characteristics were examined to provide a more in-depth view of this rating. Physical and mental characteristics, indicating the greatest and least degree of involvement, were determined. The sources of greatest and least job/military career satisfaction within this rating were also ascertained.

135. Critical tests in the theory and application of nonstatistical dynamics

Chapter one provides an overview of nonstatistical dynamics and the methodology presented in this work to search for such effects. Chapters two and three discuss a singlet biradical which was specifically designed to search for nonstatistical effects in the ring opening of a cyclopropylmethyl radical. These effects could be seen experimentally by observing the reactivity of the biradical as a function of the pressure of the supercritical fluid solvent. While several syntheses were designed to synthesise the biradical precursor, they were ultimately unsuccessful. Computational study of the biradical system highlights the convenience and accuracy of density functional theory in studying singlet biradicals. Molecular dynamics carried out on the biradical system is then discussed. The molecular dynamics confirms that this biradical should be a useful systems to search for nonstatistical dynamics. Chapters four and five discuss cyclopentadiene. When cyclopentadiene is formed from bicyclo[2.1.0]pent-2-ene, it can undergo a [1.5] hydrogen shift. We proposed that this hydrogen shift shows evidence for nonstatistical dynamics. Molecular dynamics calculations at the density functional theory level showed that hydrogen shift breaks the expected symmetry of the system. This symmetry breaking is caused by normal mode coupling which is a hallmark of nonstatistical dynamics. We have proposed a mechanism for the transformation of bicyclo[2.1.0]pent-2-ene into cyclopentadiene that explains the oscillatory behaviour of the hydrogen shift which is able to break the symmetry. We have also proposed isotope-labelling experiments that can be used to confirm the existence of nonstatistical behaviour for the cyclopentadiene system.
