113. Use of a silicone shield to protect the optical cylinder following osteo- and osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis (O/OKP) procedures

Abstract

Purpose To describe the placement of a silicone shield to protect the optical cylinder following osteo-keratoprosthesis or osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis (O/OKP) procedures in four patients.Methods In this retrospective observational study, we reviewed all patients who underwent O/OKP in our tertiary medical centre. We found four patients in whom a protective cellphone silicone shield (VisionGuard+, Zagg, Utah, USA) was cut with a 3 mm dermal punch and placed on the polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) optical cylinder of an O/OKP 3–4 months after implantation to either correct or prevent abrasions.Results The first patient presented with a severely abraded OOKP optic that reduced BCVA from 6/6 to 6/20. The shield smoothed the optical surface and filled minor scratches, leading to BCVA improvement to 6/9. In the subsequent three patients, the optic was relatively clear, and the shield was used as a preventive measure. In two patients, the shield fell off after a few weeks and was replaced.Conclusions Placing a protective silicone shield on the optical cylinder of an O/OKP can prevent permanent abrasions and, in an already scratched polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) optic cylinder, improve vision by smoothing the surface. This intervention can be clinically significant, considering that the optical cylinder cannot be removed after implantation.

Abstract

International audience; Demographic and ecophysiological data for the endangered New Caledonian conifer, Araucaria muelleri (Araucariaceae), were analysed to: (i) evaluate population viability in relation to site conditions and human impacts; and (ii) advance our understanding of how stress-tolerator plant functional traits affect the population dynamic behaviour and conservation requirements of long-lived tree species. Growth, survivorship and recruitment in four A. muelleri populations were monitored across 9 years. Demographic rates were analysed using stage-based transition matrices. Leaf δ13C, %N and photosystem II stress (Fv/Fm) were measured for seedlings, saplings and trees, and leaf mass per area (LMA) for trees, and correlations among ecophysiological and demographic variables explored. Seedling, sapling and tree stem growth were among the slowest, and annual survivorship among the highest, reported for any tree. Transition matrix analyses yielded stable estimated population growth rates, λ, not significantly different from 1.0 for all populations. Leaf δ13C was positively correlated with seedling and sapling height growth, while daytime photosystem II stress (Fv/Fm) was high in seedlings, but low in saplings and trees. Ecophysiological measures suggest that individuals transition from moisture-limited growth at the seedling stage to nutrient-limited growth as adults. High levels of environmental stress result in slow stand dynamics, characterized by low recruitment and growth rates counterbalanced by equally low mortality rates. These dynamics result in populations with limited capacity to increase in size quickly, but potentially highly vulnerable to decline should the rate of adult mortality increase. This combination of traits is likely typical of extreme stress-tolerator woody species and suggests a conservation focus on the preservation of mature individuals.

118. Radial growth of Picea glaucaand Picea engelmanniiacross Canada and USA: monthly climate, decadal oscillations, and climate change

Abstract

ABSTRACTWe employ a dendrochronological approach to examine spatial variation in radial tree growth-climate relationships and responses to global climate oscillations across the geographic ranges of Picea glaucaand Picea engelmannii. Tree-ring chronologies were constructed for 77 sites and analyzed using correlation coefficients for monthly climatic variables. In general, for Picea glauca, stands in the western portion of its range had significant negative correlations with temperature during fall, winter, and spring; only summer temperature was positively correlated with tree growth. In eastern North America, Picea glaucagrowth was negatively correlated with winter and spring temperature. Across the north-south range of Picea engelmannii, growth of northern populations was positively correlated with temperature in most seasons except spring, which had negative correlations, and response to winter precipitation differed between northern and southern populations. However, some monthly values for both species correlations were altered due to decadal oscillation phase, especially for the Pacific Decadal Oscillation.

150. Quantifying Forest Structure Within Two Managed Units in Rock Cut State Park.

Abstract

The 1251 ha Rock Cut State Park (RCSP) is the largest state park in northern Illinois. Over the past 56 years, management practices have included prescribed burning, regular mowing, and tree plantings. Specifically, we sought to quantify the species composition, age structure, and light environment in two management units within the park. The first unit (campground) was last burned in 2009 and is comprised of primarily small trees; the second unit (Willow Creek Natural Area - WCNA) is more open and relatively undisturbed with larger trees. To assess these two units we used several methods, including stand structure analysis, tree coring, and hemispherical photographs. Between the months of June-August (2012 and 2013), eight plots were delineated and sampled. Within the campground unit, median tree age was 52.5 years, with a maximum age of approximately 130 years. This site is mostly dominated by young slippery elm (Ulmus rubra) followed by white oak (Quercus alba) and hickory (Carya spp.). Elimination of landscape-scale fires has likely led to a conversion from oak savanna to the closed forest found today at RCSP. High densities of shade-tolerant species dominating WCNA suggest management fires have been insufficient at maintaining white and bur oak regeneration. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
