Abstract

Currently the best indicator for surgical treatment of arterio-sclerosis is the degree of stenosis. Although X-ray angiography is currently the standard, cost and morbidity are distinct disadvantages. By modelling stenosis and studying its biofluid mechanics, one can apply its results in the field of arterial disease research. This formed the motivation for this work. A non-Newtonian (power law) incompressible Navier-Stokes (N-S) solver was developed using the method of operator splitting and artificial compressibility. The vehicle used is the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) numerical library FASTFLO. The power-law model developed is then used to do a parametric study of the effect of 'n' on blood flow mechanics where 'n' is the power index that determines the haematocrit of blood. A pulsatile pressure wave over a cardiac cycle of a second was used to simulate transient flow over a hypothetical two-dimensional stenotic geometry. By comparing the different velocity pressure, wall shear stress and viscosity profiles, it has been found when 'n' increases, the vortex formation and peak wall shear stress decreases (magnitudes of < 1.5 Pa). Since the formation of vortices and low oscillatory wall shear stress on the stenotic wall is detrimental to the well-being of the arterial tract, it can therefore be inferred that there might be a relationship between the diseased state of blood (power law) and early genesis of atherosclerosis. Abstract

This paper focuses on the usage of a novel binder system base on palm oil product to produce sintered parts of stainless steel 316L produced by vertical injection molding technique for biomedical application. The stainless steel 316L powder was mixed using z-blade mixer with the thermoplastic binder system comprising of polyethylene, paraffin wax, stearic acid and palm stearin which was derived from palm oil at different volume percent (%). The feedstock then was studied in term of viscosity and shear rate using capillary rheometer. The feedstock was molded using vertical injection molding machine. After molding, the green molded part was immersed into the solvent to extract part of the binder system followed by sintering under vacuum atmosphere at the temperature of 1360°C. The physical and mechanical properties of the sintered part such as density, hardness, shrinkage, ultimate tensile strength and elongation were measured. Biocompatibility study of in vitro test using cell osteosarcoma MG-63 was observed and discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

With the pervasive take-up and presence of digital technologies, learning management system (LMS) is popular for its open accessibility and its interactive nature. Implementation of LMS has become part of the strategic plan in higher education institution to enhance the flexibility in teaching and learning. It is essential to explore the perceptions of users in using the LMS in order to inform stakeholders the positive influencing aspects and improve the negative factors in the future. This study investigates the perception of lecturers in using LMS in term of perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use for teaching purposes. Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) is used as the research framework to design the questionnaire. An online questionnaire was created to address the research questions. The results reveal that lecturers do not react positively towards perceived ease of use of Moodle for teaching. Lecturers treat Moodle as content repository and do not fully utilize the interactive features in Moodle. It was found that usability issues, interaction and communication issues had a negative impact on the lecturers' perception. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This paper presents the structural behaviour of precast lightweight foam concrete sandwich panel (PFLP) under flexure, studied experimentally and theoretically. Four (4) full scale specimens with a double shear steel connector of 6mm diameter and steel reinforcement of 9mm diameter were cast and tested. The panel's structural behavior was studied in the context of its ultimate flexure load, crack pattern, load-deflection profile, and efficiency of shear connectors. Results showed that the ultimate flexure load obtained from the experiment is influenced by the panel's compressive strength and thickness. The crack pattern recorded in each panel showed the emergence of initial cracks at the midspan which later spread toward the left and right zones of the slab. The theoretical ultimate load for fully composite and noncomposite panels was obtained from the classical equations. All panel specimens were found to behave in a partially composite manner. Panels PLFP-3 and PLFP-4 with higher compressive strength and total thickness managed to obtain a higher degree of compositeness which is 30 and 32.6 percent, respectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

This study documents the experience of Malaysian firms in the implementation of TQM. Issues being explored and documented are years required to fully implement TQM, benefits of TQM, the different kinds of TQM training conducted, and reasons for not adopting TQM. This paper also shows that adoption of TQM leads to improvement in organizational performance, and that the involvement of employees and senior executives is important to support TQM execution, irrespective of a firm' s paid-up capital and years of operation.
