Abstract

Attosecond pulses, produced through high-order harmonic generation in gases, have been successfully used for observing ultrafast, subfemtosecond electron dynamics in atoms, molecules and solid state systems. Today’s typical attosecond sources, however, are often impaired by their low repetition rate and the resulting insufficient statistics, especially when the number of detectable events per shot is limited. This is the case for experiments, where several reaction products must be detected in coincidence, and for surface science applications where space charge effects compromise spectral and spatial resolution. In this work, we present an attosecond light source operating at 200 kHz, which opens up the exploration of phenomena previously inaccessible to attosecond interferometric and spectroscopic techniques. Key to our approach is the combination of a high-repetition rate, few-cycle laser source, a specially designed gas target for efficient high harmonic generation, a passively and actively stabilized pump-probe interferometer and an advanced 3D photoelectron/ion momentum detector. While most experiments in the field of attosecond science so far have been performed with either single attosecond pulses or long trains of pulses, we explore the hitherto mostly overlooked intermediate regime with short trains consisting of only a few attosecond pulses. We also present the first coincidence measurement of single-photon double-ionization of helium with full angular resolution, using an attosecond source. The photo-fragmentation of ammonia molecular clusters ionized with soft x-rays is studied for photon energies near the N-1s threshold. The fragmentation is studied with a 3D momentum mass spectrometer to access the energy and angular correlations between fragments. By choosing the cluster sizes below or above the critical size of stable dication, we investigate the coulomb explosion dynamics and the interplay between charge delocalization and mobility of molecules in the clusters. more...

Abstract

We present experimental measurements and theoretical calculations of photoionization time delays from the 3s and 3p shells in Ar in the photon energy range of 32-42 eV. The experimental measurements are performed by interferometry using attosecond pulse trains and the infrared laser used for their generation. The theoretical approach includes intershell correlation effects between the 3s and 3p shells within the framework of the random-phase approximation with exchange. The connection between single-photon ionization and the two-color two-photon ionization process used in the measurement is established using the recently developed asymptotic approximation for the complex transition amplitudes of laser-assisted photoionization. Abstract

Photo-double ionization (PDI) of xenon by the Ti: Sapphire laser fundamental frequency combined to its 19th and 25th harmonics has been studied by means of a momentum imaging spectrometer. The measurement of the two emitted photoelectrons' momenta and their energy and angular correlations gives insight into the various mechanisms leading to PDI. Abstract

Populations of inclusions conditioned very early in the alloy production process metals, during the refining and liquid metal treatment stages, are likely to drastically impact mechanical performance, especially fatigue resistance. Control performance of these materials therefore requires control of the inclusion populations, requiring in particular a very good knowledge of the mechanisms which govern their evolution in number and size in refining reactors. Inclusive behaviors in supply chains steel and aluminum have already been the subject of numerical studies at the process scale (Bellot et al., 2014 ; Waz et al., 2016) in which the transport and agglomeration of inclusions are modelled. In order to improve the modelling of key phenomena such as the aggregation and capture of wall inclusions, local simulations, at the scale of an inclusion pair and a layer limit to the wall of a reactor, are carried out here using a lattice Boltzmann method (Sungkorn and Derksen, 2012). more...

Abstract

We report on a retrospective study evaluating infectious morbidity associated with totally implantable venous access devices (TIVAD) (Port-A-Cath) in HIV-infected patients. This study of 84 consecutive HIV-infected patients requiring 89 TIVAD between January 1990 and October 1993 was performed in the Department of Infectious Diseases Hopital de l'Institut Pasteur, Paris, France. The total number of catheter days was 11,595. Eighteen of 89 patients with TIVAD (20%) were infected, causing 25 infectious events (25/89: 28%) among 17 different patients (17/84: 20%). The infection rate was 0.22 per 100 catheter days. Mean onset of infection was 82 days. Twenty microorganisms were isolated: Staphylococcus aureus in eight cases (40%), coagulase-negative Staphylococcus in six cases (30%), Streptococcus D faecalis in one case; Gram-negative bacilli were found in five cases (25%). All patients received an intravenous antibiotherapy combined with a local lock treatment in eight cases. Nine TIVAD removals were performed. One death was related to the TIVAD infection. No additional predisposing factor for infection was identified other than the implied condition of the HIV infection. The population and material in this study were homogeneous. The TIVAD infection rate was comparable to other published reports. Prospective evaluation comparing tunneled catheter and TIVAD in HIV-infected patients is needed. more...
