Nonpoint source (NPS) pollution is pollution affecting a water body from diffuse sources, rather than a point source which discharges to a water body at a single location. It was ranked by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as the leading cause of water pollution in the United States (EPA841-F-96-004A). Since NPS may derive from many different sources, it is difficult to regulate and specific solutions to rectify the situation are problematic. Antibiotic resistance genes represent treatment challenges for wastewater treatment systems. These resistance genes are a direct outcome of insufficient treatment of antimicrobial substances within wastewater treatment plants. Thus, this research work concentrated on a typical antibiotic sulfamethoxazole (4-amino-N-[5-methyl-3-isoxazolyl]-benzene sulfonamide or SMX). In this study, the effectiveness of SMX adsorption onto ordered mesoporous carbon (OMC) was first systematically evaluated. SEM, TEM, and BET were used to examine the morphology of OMCs, while XPS, FTIR, and Boehm titration were used to determine the functional groups present on OMCs. The specific surface was found to be 1395.31 m2/g for OMC-900. The behavior of adsorbing SMX onto OMCs was evaluated using kinetics and isotherms studies. The influence of solution pH, temperature, coexisting ions, and natural organic matter (NOM) were also evaluated as to their impacts on SMX adsorption. The results revealed that the mesopores in OMC contributed significantly to SMX adsorption capacity. Adsorption achieved equilibrium after 4 h with an adsorption capacity of 334 mg/g. The Pseudo Second Order Kinetic Model provided a good fit for the adsorption kinetic processes of SMX. The Freundlich Isotherm Model, which suggests physical adsorption, provides a better fit for adsorption isotherm data. The adsorption of SMX onto OMC was exothermic and spontaneous, according to thermodynamic analyses. Most importantly, the adsorption mechanisms of SMX onto OMC include hydrogen bonding and electrostatic interaction. Additionally, a key adsorption mechanism was found to be the affinity (π- π interactions) between the aromatic structures of OMC and the benzene ring in SMX molecule. This study reports a thorough understanding of adsorption components and mechanisms involved in the adsorption of SMX onto OMCs and also the regeneration of OMCs after adsorption. We introduce free-standing FeS 2 /carbon microlattice composites as electrodes for lithium-ion batteries through 3D printing. The computer-aided design allows for any shape. The microlattice features aligned microchannels, promoting ion transfer, while the carbon skeleton facilitates electron transfer. Overall, this study shows 3D printing is highly promising in advancing sustainable energy applications.

Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) have drawn great attention due to their wide distribution in water bodies and toxicity to human beings. Adsorption is considered as an efficient treatment technique for meeting the increasingly stringent environmental and health standards for PFAS. This paper systematically reviewed the current approaches of PFAS adsorption using different adsorbents from drinking water as well as synthetic and real wastewater. Adsorbents with large mesopores and high specific surface area adsorb PFAS faster, their adsorption capacities are higher, and the adsorption process are usually more effective under low pH conditions. PFAS adsorption mechanisms mainly include electrostatic attraction, hydrophobic interaction, anion exchange, and ligand exchange. Various adsorbents show promising performances but challenges such as requirements of organic solvents in regeneration, low adsorption selectivity, and complicated adsorbent preparations should be addressed before large scale implementation. Moreover, the aid of decision-making tools including response surface methodology (RSM), techno-economic assessment (TEA), life cycle assessment (LCA), and multi criteria decision analysis (MCDA) were discussed for engineering applications. The use of these tools is highly recommended prior to scale-up to determine if the specific adsorption process is economically feasible and sustainable.
