Abstract

Relation linking is an important problem for knowledge graph-based Question Answering. Given a natural language question and a knowledge graph, the task is to identify relevant relations from the given knowledge graph. Since existing techniques for entity extraction and linking are more stable compared to relation linking, our idea is to exploit entities extracted from the question to support relation linking. In this paper, we propose a novel approach, based on DBpedia entities, for computing relation candidates. We have empirically evaluated our approach on different standard benchmarks. Our evaluation shows that our approach significantly outperforms existing baseline systems in both recall, precision and runtime.

Abstract

We propose a new end-to-end method for extending a Knowledge Graph (KG) from tables. Existing techniques tend to interpret tables by focusing on information that is already in the KG, and therefore tend to extract many redundant facts. Our method aims to find more novel facts. We introduce a new technique for table interpretation based on a scalable graphical model using entity similarities. Our method further disambiguates cell values using KG embeddings as additional ranking method. Other distinctive features are the lack of assumptions about the underlying KG and the enabling of a fine-grained tuning of the precision/recall trade-off of extracted facts. Our experiments show that our approach has a higher recall during the interpretation process than the state-of-the-art, and is more resistant against the bias observed in extracting mostly redundant facts since it produces more novel extractions.

Abstract

This paper presents an empirical study aiming at understanding the modeling style and the overall semantic structure of Linked Open Data. We observe how classes, properties and individuals are used in practice. We also investigate how hierarchies of concepts are structured, and how much they are linked. In addition to discussing the results, this paper contributes (i) a conceptual framework, including a set of metrics, which generalises over the observable constructs; (ii) an open source implementation that facilitates its application to other Linked Data knowledge graphs.

Abstract

Linked lists represent a countable number of ordered values, and are among the most important abstract data types in computer science. With the advent of RDF as a highly expressive knowledge representation language for the Web, various implementations for RDF lists have been proposed. Yet, there is no benchmark so far dedicated to evaluate the performance of triple stores and SPARQL query engines on dealing with ordered linked data. Moreover, essential tasks for evaluating RDF lists, like generating datasets containing RDF lists of various sizes, or generating the same RDF list using different modelling choices, are cumbersome and unprincipled. In this paper, we propose List.MID, a systematic benchmark for evaluating systems serving RDF lists. List.MID consists of a dataset generator, which creates RDF list data in various models and of different sizes; and a set of SPARQL queries. The RDF list data is coherently generated from a large, community-curated base collection of Web MIDI files, rich in lists of musical events of arbitrary length. We describe the List.MID benchmark, and discuss its impact and adoption, reusability, design, and availability.

Abstract

Song lyrics contain repeated patterns that have been proven to facilitate automated lyrics segmentation, with the final goal of detecting the building blocks (e.g., chorus, verse) of a song text. Our contribution in this article is twofold. First, we introduce a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based model that learns to segment the lyrics based on their repetitive text structure. We experiment with novel features to reveal different kinds of repetitions in the lyrics, for instance based on phonetical and syntactical properties. Second, using a novel corpus where the song text is synchronized to the audio of the song, we show that the text and audio modalities capture complementary structure of the lyrics and that combining both is beneficial for lyrics segmentation performance. For the purely text-based lyrics segmentation on a dataset of 103k lyrics, we achieve an F-score of 67.4%, improving on the state of the art (59.2% F-score). On the synchronized text–audio dataset of 4.8k songs, we show that the additional audio features improve segmentation performance to 75.3% F-score, significantly outperforming the purely text-based approaches. In addition, the overall aging of the population requires them to treat patients with many diseases (comorbidity), which complicates the management of patients since polypharmacy implies the appearance of unexpected adverse drug’s effects. In this paper, we present the interface of an algorithm de-veloped to assist in the decision-making process of general practitioners (GPs) that allows them to identify in patients the first signs that lead to hospitalization and medical problems to be treated as a priority; Les médecins sont confrontés à une augmentation constante du nombre de leurs patients compte tenu du numerus clausus imposé aux études médicales en France. De plus, le vieillissement global de la population les oblige à traiter des patients atteints de nombreuses maladies chroniques (comorbidité), ce qui complique la prise en charge des patients puisque la polymédication implique l'apparition d'effets indésirables. Dans cet article, nous présentons l'interface d'un algorithme développé pour aider à la prise de décision des médecins généralistes qui leur permet d'identifier les premiers signes qui mènent les patients à l'hospitalisation et les problèmes médicaux à traiter en priorité.

Abstract

International audience; Interaction Affordances are central to the W3C Web of Things (WoT): they allow Consumers to identify and use the capabilities provided by Web Things. 1 Ideally, interaction affordances would allow consumers to arrive-and-operate in any W3C WoT environment: given an entry URI, consumers would be able to achieve their tasks in an autonomous manner by navigating the hypermedia and deciding among the various options presented to them at run time. A central challenge then, which is not typically within the scope of Web engineering , is how to design, program, debug, monitor, and regulate such autonomous consumers of Web Things. The engineering of similar autonomous systems has been studied to a large extent in research on multi-agent systems (MAS), and we believe that tapping into the large body of MAS research holds great promise for unlocking the full potential of the W3C WoT. In this position paper, we motivate and present our vision for autonomous systems in the WoT, and support this vision with a prototype for industrial manufacturing. We then discuss some of the challenges and opportunities raised by bringing autonomy to the WoT.

Abstract

International audience; Now in its 18th edition, the ISWC conference is the most important international venue to discuss and present latest advances and applications of the Semantic Web, Linked Data, Knowledge Graphs, Knowledge Representation, and Intelligent Processing on the Web. At the beginning of the 2000s this research community was formed, starting with the first international Semantic Web Working Symposium (SWWS), a workshop held in Stanford, Palo Alto, held during July 30 to August 1, 2001. The following year the symposium became the International Semantic Web Conference (ISWC) series in Sardinia, Italy, and at that time the website was predicting that it would be a major international forum at which research on all aspects of the Semantic Web would be presented. And indeed, as in previous editions, ISWC 2019 brought together researchers and practitioners from all over the world to present fundamental research, new technologies, visionary ideas, new applications, and discuss experiences. It featured a balanced mix of fundamental research, innovations, scientific artefacts such as datasets, software, ontologies, or benchmarks, and applications that showcase the power and latest advances of semantics, data, and artificial intelligence on the Web.

Abstract

International audience; Current evaluation methods of exploratory search systems are still incomplete as they are not fully based on a suitable model of the exploratory search process: as such they cannot be used to determine if they effectively support exploratory search behaviours and tasks. Aiming to elaborate evaluation methods based on an appropriate model of exploratory search, we propose in this paper a model of the exploratory search process compliant with the acknowledged exploratory search characteristics, and we present the first evaluation of this model.; Les moteurs de recherche exploratoire sont des systèmes visant à assister le processus d’exploration d’information. Les méthodes actuelles d’évaluation de ces moteurs ne sont pas adaptées pour vérifier s’ils assistent effectivement et complètement les comportements et tâches de recherche exploratoire, car elles ne reposent pas sur un modèle approprié de ces comportements et tâches. Afin d’élaborer des méthodes d’évaluation basées sur une meilleure compréhension du processus d’exploration, nous proposons ici un modèle du processus de recherche exploratoire conforme aux caractéristiques reconnues de processus et présentons une première évaluation de ce modèle.

Abstract

As part of the SMILK Joint Lab, we studied the use of Natural Language Processing to: (1) enrich knowledge bases and link data on the web, and conversely (2) use this linked data to contribute to the improvement of text analysis and the annotation of textual content, and to support knowledge extraction. The evaluation focused on brand-related information retrieval in the field of cosmetics. Abstract

International audience; The goal of this paper is to present a new set of seven heuristics to overcome limitations of existing sets of privacy heuristics in terms of personal-data control activity. These heuristics have been operationalized into sixty-five more specific heuristics to reflect personal-data control activity and its various dimensions and to assess effective control of personal data. Heuristics were tested, being applied to a mobile application called “PadDoc” that allows users to store and transfer their personal data in the context of secured administrative or commercial transactions.

Abstract

Abstract Background Ontology term labels can be ambiguous and have multiple senses. While this is no problem for human annotators, it is a challenge to automated methods, which identify ontology terms in text. Classical approaches to word sense disambiguation use co-occurring words or terms. However, most treat ontologies as simple terminologies, without making use of the ontology structure or the semantic similarity between terms. Another useful source of information for disambiguation are metadata. Here, we systematically compare three approaches to word sense disambiguation, which use ontologies and metadata, respectively. Results The 'Closest Sense' method assumes that the ontology defines multiple senses of the term. It computes the shortest path of co-occurring terms in the document to one of these senses. The 'Term Cooc' method defines a log-odds ratio for co-occurring terms including co-occurrences inferred from the ontology structure. The 'MetaData' approach trains a classifier on metadata. It does not require any ontology, but requires training data, which the other methods do not. To evaluate these approaches we defined a manually curated training corpus of 2600 documents for seven ambiguous terms from the Gene Ontology and MeSH. All approaches over all conditions achieve 80% success rate on average. The 'MetaData' approach performed best with 96%, when trained on high-quality data. Its performance deteriorates as quality of the training data decreases. The 'Term Cooc' approach performs better on Gene Ontology (92% success) than on MeSH (73% success) as MeSH is not a strict is-a/part-of, but rather a loose is-related-to hierarchy. The 'Closest Sense' approach achieves on average 80% success rate. Conclusion Metadata is valuable for disambiguation, but requires high quality training data. Closest Sense requires no training, but a large, consistently modelled ontology, which are two opposing conditions. Term Cooc achieves greater 90% success given a consistently modelled ontology. Overall, the results show that well structured ontologies can play a very important role to improve disambiguation. Abstract

This document presents a survey prior to a thesis project, which aims to propose solutions allowing local and restricted access to the Web of data. We have explored several relevant mechanisms proposed in the literature, dedicated to various problems and likely to constitute important points for our future contributions. Since our main objective is to offer tools dedicated to mobility situations in environments where internet access is unreliable, we were particularly interested in comparing approaches (P2P, DHT, etc.) allowing to realize a particular fog/edge computing scenario which is restricted and local mobile access to contextually relevant and shared related data. In this context, we have focused some of our research on so-called gossip protocols (or epidemic protocols) that are well suited to the dynamic nature of networks. The dynamic aspect of the peers also led us to consider the solutions that take into account the location of the peers in order to improve the quality of the services offered.In addition, we looked at solutions dealing with semantic heterogeneity in peer-to-peer environments, including ontology alignment mechanisms that allow us to fully benefit from the power of peer-to-peer systems without imposing the use of a common ontology to all peers.Data replication and caching can be an important alternative to accessing remote sources; we have devoted the last part of this document to solutions based on these mechanisms to supply a local access to data.; Ce document présente un état de l'art préalable à un projet de thèse qui vise à proposer des solutions permettant un accès local et restreint au Web de données. Nous avons exploré plusieurs mécanismes pertinents proposés dans la littérature, dédiés à des problématiques différentes et pouvant constituer des points importants pour nos futures contributions. Notre objectif principal étant de proposer des outils dédiés à des situations de mobilité dans des environnements ou l’accès internet est peu fiable, nous nous sommes intéressés particulièrement à comparer des approches (P2P, DHT, etc.) permettant de réaliser un scénario de fog/edge computing particulier qui est l'accès mobile restreint et local à des données liées contextuellement pertinentes et partagées. Dans cette optique, nous avons focalisé une partie de nos recherches bibliographiques sur les protocoles dits de « gossip » (ou protocoles épidémiques) qui s’avèrent bien adaptés au caractère dynamique des réseaux. L'aspect dynamique des pairs nous a aussi amené à considérer des solutions qui prennent en compte la localisation des pairs pour améliorer la qualité des services offerts.Nous regardons de plus dans ce document, des solutions traitant de l’hétérogénéité sémantique dans des environnements pair-à-pair, notamment des mécanismes d’alignements d’ontologies qui permettent de profiter pleinement de la puissance des systèmes pair-à-pair sans imposer l’utilisation d’une ontologie commune à tous les pairs.La réplication et le cache de données pouvant constituer une alternative importante à l’accès à des sources distantes, nous avons consacré la dernière partie de ce document aux solutions reposant sur ces mécanismes et offrant ainsi un accès local aux données.

Abstract

Ad-hoc querying is crucial to access information from Linked Data, yet publishing queryable RDF datasets on the Web is not a trivial exercise. The most compelling argument to support this claim is that the Web contains hundreds of thousands of data documents, while only 260 queryable SPARQL endpoints are provided. Even worse, the SPARQL endpoints we do have are often unstable, may not comply with the standards, and may differ in supported features. In other words, hosting data online is easy, but publishing Linked Data via a queryable API such as SPARQL appears to be too difficult. As a consequence, in practice, there is no single uniform way to query the LOD Cloud today. In this paper, we therefore combine a large-scale Linked Data publication project LOD Laundromat with a low-cost server-side interface Triple Pattern Fragments, in order to bridge the gap between the Web of downloadable data documents and the Web of live queryable data. The result is ai¾?repeatable, low-cost, open-source data publication process. To demonstrate its applicability, we made over 650,000 data documents available as datai¾?APIs, consisting of 30i¾?billion i¾?triples.
