Visual assessment in preverbal children mostly relies on the preferential looking paradigm. It requires an experienced observer to interpret the child’s responses to a stimulus. DIVE (Device for an Integral Visual Examination) is a digital tool with an integrated eye tracker (ET) that lifts this requirement and automatizes this process. The aim of our study was to assess the development of two visual functions, visual acuity (VA) and contrast sensitivity (CS), with DIVE, in a large sample of children from 6 months to 14 years (y) of age, and to compare the results of preterm and full-term children. Participants were recruited in clinical settings from five countries. There were 2208 children tested, 609 of them were born preterm. Both VA and CS improved throughout childhood, with the maximum increase during the first 5 years of age. Gestational age, refractive error and age had an impact on VA results, while CS values were only influenced by age. With this study we report normative reference outcomes for VA and CS throughout childhood and validate the DIVE tests as a useful tool to measure basic visual functions in children.

Recent differentiable rendering techniques have become key tools to tackle many inverse problems in graphics and vision. Existing models, however, assume steady-state light transport, i.e., infinite speed of light. While this is a safe assumption for many applications, recent advances in ultrafast imaging leverage the wealth of information that can be extracted from the exact time of flight of light. In this context, physically-based transient rendering allows to efficiently simulate and analyze light transport considering that the speed of light is indeed finite. In this paper, we introduce a novel differentiable transient rendering framework, to help bring the potential of differentiable approaches into the transient regime. To differentiate the transient path integral we need to take into account that scattering events at path vertices are no longer independent; instead, tracking the time of flight of light requires treating such scattering events at path vertices jointly as a multidimensional, evolving manifold. We thus turn to the generalized transport theorem, and introduce a novel correlated importance term, which links the time-integrated contribution of a path to its light throughput, and allows us to handle discontinuities in the light and sensor functions. Last, we present results in several challenging scenarios where the time of flight of light plays an important role such as optimizing indices of refraction, non-line-of-sight tracking with nonplanar relay walls, and non-line-of-sight tracking around two corners.

This work aims to build a panorama of the organization of Brazilian basketball between 1989 and 2008 in order to understand the elements that influenced the crisis of the sport culminating in the loss of the public, sponsors and the poor results of the national teams. This overview was constructed through the Critical Discourse Analysis of the coverage of the presidents of the Brazilian Basketball Confederation (CBB) and of the coaches of the Brazilian adult team (women’s and men’s), published in the newspapers of the period. It is possible to conclude that the transformations in Brazilian sport allied with internal management problems contribute to the poor results of the national team and the disorganization of the national championship. Esse panorama foi construído por meio da Análise Crítica do discurso da cobertura dos presidentes da Confederação Brasileira de Basquete (CBB) e dos técnicos da Seleção Brasileira adulta (feminina e masculina), publicada nos jornais do período. É possível concluir que a crise da modalidade é resultado da incapacidade de se definir um projeto de longo prazo e das disputas políticas envolvendo a gestão dos campeonatos nacionais.
