The physical processes governing a tropical cyclone's lifecycle are largely understood, but key processes occur at scales below those resolved by global climate models. Increased resolution may help simulate realistic tropical cyclone intensification. We examined fully coupled, global storm‐resolving models run at resolutions in the range 28–2.8 km in the atmosphere and 28–5 km in the ocean. Simulated tropical cyclone activity, peak intensity, intensification rate, and horizontal wind structure are all more realistic at a resolution of ∼5 km compared with coarser resolutions. Rapid intensification, which is absent at typical climate model resolutions, is also captured, and exhibits sensitivity to how, and if, deep convection is parameterized. Additionally, the observed decrease in inner‐core horizontal size with increasing intensification rate is captured at storm‐resolving resolution. These findings highlight the importance of global storm‐resolving models for quantifying risk and understanding the role of intense tropical cyclones in the climate system. Plain Language Summary: Simulating strong tropical storms (i.e., major hurricanes, super typhoons) with climate models is challenging because important processes that act to intensify a storm occur over spatial scales that are too small for global models to capture. Typical models lack sufficient resolution in the atmosphere and ocean, often constrained by computational resources. Recently, in a few models, resolution has increased to a point where each grid cell represents an area of just a few square kilometres, a significant leap of one or two orders of magnitude. We analyzed tropical storms simulated by these state‐of‐the‐art, so‐called storm‐resolving models and found that peak tropical storm intensity and the rate at which storms intensify are both more realistic. These models also simulate the rapid intensification of tropical storms and capture the small eye diameters often seen in the most intense storms. Our work provides evidence that storm‐resolving resolution may help us better understand the role of tropical storms in the climate system and predict their behavior in a warming climate. Global warming has accelerated the iodine cycle in the Arctic Ocean, amplifying its significance in the global iodine cycle. However, some intricacies of the iodine cycle in the Arctic marine environment remain unclear. In this study, we present concentrations of stable- and radio-iodine (127I and 129I) in total iodine, iodide (I–), and iodate (IO 3 –) in seawater from the Beaufort, Chukchi, and Bering Seas. Results show a wide range of 129I/127I ratios of total iodine (3.2 × 10–12–9.3 × 10–9), indicating that the total 129I/127I ratio is a valuable fingerprint for identifying water masses and comprehending mixing processes. Iodine loss in surface seawater was quantitatively assessed using 129I, revealing that Arctic rivers substantially contribute to the emission of iodine into the atmosphere from the Arctic and subarctic seas. Our redox simulation in the Arctic intermediate layer shows the concentrations and 129I/127I ratios of I– and IO 3 – during its migration and provides the first evidence of an IO 3 – reduction process masked by the I– oxidation in the intermediate Arctic Ocean. Oxidation and reduction processes in the intermediate Arctic Ocean were characterized by extremely slow rates, at 0.95–2.41 and 0.26 ± 0.13 nM/year, respectively. Summary: Rising global temperatures pose a threat to plant immunity, making them more susceptible to diseases. The impact of temperature on plant immunity against biotrophic and hemi‐biotrophic pathogens is well documented, while its effect on necrotrophs remains poorly understood. We venture into the uncharted territory of necrotrophic fungal pathogens in the face of rising temperatures. We discuss the role of the plant hormones salicylic acid (SA) and jasmonic acid (JA) in providing resistance to necrotrophs and delve into the temperature sensitivity of the SA pathway. Additionally, we explore the repercussions of increased temperatures on plant susceptibility to necrotrophs. We put forward a research agenda with an experimental framework aimed at providing a comprehensive understanding of how plants and pathogens adapt to increasing temperatures. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Case studies from global cities contribute to more focused analyses of global warming challenges and demonstrate the performance and effectiveness of mitigation and adaptation strategies to identify lessons about success at the city scale. The case studies were chosen to demonstrate aspects of the critical messages for action priorities in global warming mitigation and adaptation. This work focuses on best practices and initiatives for mitigation and adaptation approaches from developed and developing economies, including North American cities, European cities, Asian cities, and other global cities worldwide. The case studies were grouped to examine, identify, and emphasize important factors in various areas (e.g., local programs and alliances, governance, stakeholder engagement, community actions, and scientific research) that determined the success of adaptation strategies in various global cities. Many recent studies showcase mitigation approaches, particularly those relating to blue-green infrastructure and nature-based strategies. The case studies selected reflect vulnerable regions and demonstrate how increasing global warming significantly concerns individuals, societies, and their infrastructure. The selected studies include Amsterdam in Netherlands; Singapore, as a city in a garden; Boston in USA; Ahmedabad Heat Action Plan in India, aimed at implementing strategies with the objectives of climate adaptation planning; Copenhagen, as a coastal town, is more susceptible to flooding; Portland, the most progressive city in USA; Hamburg in Germany, one of the biggest harbours in Europe; and the 'Rain City Strategy', in Vancouver, Canada. The gastrointestinal (GI) microbiome of chelonians (testudines) plays an important role in their metabolism, nutrition, and overall health but the GI microbiome of three-toed box turtles (Terrapene carolina triunguis) has yet to be characterized. How the GI microbiome responds to rapidly rising environmental temperatures has also not been studied extensively in ectotherms, specifically chelonians. In this study, twenty (20) T.c.triunguis were split into control and experimental groups. The experimental group experienced 4.5°C increases every two weeks while the control group stayed at a constant ambient temperature (24°C) through the entirety of the experiment. Before each temperature increase, all turtles had cloacal swab samples taken. These samples underwent DNA extraction followed by 16S rRNA gene sequencing and microbial community analyses. Differences in diversity at the community level in the controls compared to the experimental groups were not statistically significant, indicating microbiome resilience to rapid temperature changes in T.c.triunguis, although some differentially abundant lineages were identified. Interestingly, an amplicon sequence variant belonging to the Erysipelothrix spp. was exclusively enriched in the highest temperature group relative to controls. Overall, our work suggests that there may be an innate robustness to rapid temperature swings in the microbiome of T.c.triunguis which are native to temperate North America. Despite this resilience, Erysipelothrix spp. was enriched at the highest temperature. Phylogenetic analysis of this amplicon variant showed that it is a close relative of Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, a pathogen of zoonotic importance associated with both wildlife and livestock. There is a growing interest in the effects of climate warming on olfaction, as temperature may affect this essential sense. In insects, the response of the olfactory system to developmental temperature might be mediated by body size or mass because body size and mass are negatively affected by developmental temperature in most ectotherms. We tested this hypothesis of a mass-mediated effect of developmental temperature on olfaction in the moth Spodoptera littoralis. We measured the olfactory sensitivity of male to female sex pheromone and five plant odors using electroantennography. We compared males reared at an optimal temperature (25 °C with a daily fluctuation of ±5 °C) and at a high temperature (33 ± 5 °C) close to the upper limit of S. littoralis. On average, the olfactory sensitivity of males did not differ between the two developmental temperatures. However, our analyses revealed an interaction between the effects of developmental temperature and body mass on the detection of the six chemicals tested. This interaction is explained by a positive relationship between antennal sensitivity and body mass observed only with the high developmental temperature. Our results show that the effect of developmental temperature may not be detected when organism size is ignored. Plant functional traits (FTs) determine growth, reproduction and survival strategies of plants adapted to their growth environment. Exploring global geographic patterns of FTs, their covariation and their relationships to climate are necessary steps towards better-founded predictions of how global environmental change will affect ecosystem composition. We compile an extensive global dataset for 16 FTs and characterise trait-trait and trait-climate relationships separately within non-woody, woody deciduous and woody evergreen plant groups, using multivariate analysis and generalised additive models (GAMs). Among the six major FTs considered, two dominant trait dimensions—representing plant size and the leaf economics spectrum (LES) respectively—are identified within all three groups. Size traits (plant height, diaspore mass) however are generally higher in warmer climates, while LES traits (leaf mass and nitrogen per area) are higher in drier climates. Larger leaves are associated principally with warmer winters in woody evergreens, but with wetter climates in non-woody plants. GAM-simulated global patterns for all 16 FTs explain up to three-quarters of global trait variation. Global maps obtained by upscaling GAMs are broadly in agreement with iNaturalist citizen-science FT data. This analysis contributes to the foundations for global trait-based ecosystem modelling by demonstrating universal relationships between FTs and climate. By considering differences among herbaceous, deciduous and evergreen plants and how these lead to divergent climatic responses in plant functional traits, the authors have created a comprehensive set of global trait maps. The effects of climate change are now more pervasive than ever. Marine ecosystems have been particularly impacted by climate change, with marine heatwaves (MHWs) being a strong driver of mass mortality events. Even in the most optimistic greenhouse gas emission scenarios, MHWs will continue to increase in frequency, intensity and duration. For this reason, understanding the resilience of marine species to the increase of MHWs is crucial to predicting their viability under future climatic conditions. In this study, we explored the consequences of MHWs on the resilience (the ability of a population to resist and recover after a disturbance) of a Mediterranean key octocoral species, Paramuricea clavata, to further disturbances to their population structure. To quantify P. clavata's capacity to resist and recover from future disturbances, we used demographic information collected from 1999 to 2022, from two different sites in the NW Mediterranean Sea to calculate the transient dynamics of their populations. Our results showed that the differences in the dynamics of populations exposed and those not exposed to MHWs were driven mostly by differences in mean survivorship and growth. We also showed that after MHWs P. clavata populations had lower resistance and slower rates of recovery than those not exposed to MHWs. Populations exposed to MHWs had lower resistance elasticity to most demographic processes compared to unexposed populations. In contrast, the only demographic process showing some differences when comparing the speed of recovery elasticity values between populations exposed and unexposed to MHWs was stasis. Finally, under scenarios of increasing frequency of MHWs, the extinction of P. clavata populations will accelerate and their capacity to resist and recover after further disturbances will be hampered. Overall, these findings confirm that future climatic conditions will make octocoral populations even more vulnerable to further disturbances. Clarifying the effects of biodiversity on ecosystem stability in the context of global environmental change is crucial for maintaining ecosystem functions and services. Asynchronous changes between trophic levels over time (i.e. trophic community asynchrony) are expected to increase trophic mismatch and alter trophic interactions, which may consequently alter ecosystem stability. However, previous studies have often highlighted the stabilising mechanism of population asynchrony within a single trophic level, while rarely examining the mechanism of trophic community asynchrony between consumers and their food resources. In this study, we analysed the effects of population asynchrony within and between trophic levels on community stability under the disturbances of climate warming, fishery decline and de‐eutrophication, based on an 18‐year monthly monitoring dataset of 137 phytoplankton and 91 zooplankton in a subtropical lake. Our results showed that species diversity promoted community stability mainly by increasing population asynchrony both for phytoplankton and zooplankton. Trophic community asynchrony had a significant negative effect on zooplankton community stability rather than that of phytoplankton, which supports the match‐mismatch hypothesis that trophic mismatch has negative effects on consumers. Furthermore, the results of the structural equation models showed that warming and top‐down effects may simultaneously alter community stability through population dynamics processes within and between trophic levels, whereas nutrients act on community stability mainly through the processes within trophic levels. Moreover, we found that rising water temperature decreased trophic community asynchrony, which may challenge the prevailing idea that climate warming increases the trophic mismatch between primary producers and consumers. Overall, our study provides the first evidence that population and trophic community asynchrony have contrasting effects on consumer community stability, which offers a valuable insight for addressing global environmental change. Agriculture is a significant contributor to anthropogenic global warming. In recent years, agricultural greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions in China, which is the largest emitter, has been decreasing. In order to identify whether or not Chinese agricultural development has affected GHG emission, we used the logarithmic mean Divisia index (LMDI) factor decomposition model to study the effect of productivity factors on GHG emission and their characteristics in four phases of Chinese agricultural development. The results indicate that land productivity is the most significantly promotion factor which contributes 1.12 Gt CO2e GHG emission growth. On the contrary, technological input intensity exerts an obvious mitigating effect with 1.57 Gt CO2e GHG emission reduction. The effects of productivity factors on GHG emission differ between household-based farming systems and large-scale management systems. A more nuanced perspective on the significant role of agricultural large-scale management in GHG emission could aid climate change mitigation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study aimed to investigate whether heat stress, as defined by the temperature-humidity index (THI) during the close-up dry period, had any impact on the productive performance, fertility, and immunometabolic blood indices of dairy cows in the subsequent lactation. Lactation performance was associated with increasing THI values on − 21, − 14, and − 7 d before calving resulting in decreased milk yield by about 2.30, 2.60, and 2.90 kg, respectively. The THI on the − 7 d before the calving was negatively associated with fertility parameters such as delayed first estrus postpartum, an elongated calving interval by approximately 32 d, a higher number of services per conception by 1.00, and an elongated artificial insemination service period, days open, and inter-calving period by about 20, 52, and 52 d, respectively. The study found that the immunometabolic blood indices were associated with increasing THI values during the close-up dry period. The study showed that exposing dairy cows to close-up dry period heat stress had negative consequences on performance, fertility, and immunometabolic blood indices in the subsequent lactation. Therefore, it is recommended that herd management and barn microclimate changes be implemented earlier, starting from the late dry period, to mitigate the negative impact of heat stress. Photocatalytic (PC) CO2 reduction reaction (CO2RR) into value‐added oxygenated products is one of the most promising ways of solving climate warming change and energy crisis simultaneously. To reach higher selectivity and productivity of fuel products, it still remains great challenge in controlling both simultaneous sequential multi‐electron/proton shuttling through different transporting pathway, which determines the intermediates and final products. Consequently, a multifunctional nickel‐perylene‐carbon nitride nanosheet (NS‐P‐g‐C3N4‐Ni) are constructed rationally to strengthen the electron and proton transfer via different pathway at the same time through molecule‐level carbon backbone with excellent conductivity/charge capacity and proton transport via pendant functional group of ‐NH2 from water oxidation sites of Ni metal cluster on perylene skeleton. CO2 adsorption is enhanced and reduction energy is reduced by the complexation of N‐atom site of NS‐P‐g‐C3N4‐Ni and adjustment of co‐planarity, optimizing conduction band and band gap with energy controllable techniques. In situ FT‐IR/Raman/EPR spectra identified and verified the transformation of active intermediates (*CO2•−, *COOH and H*COO−) adsorbed on the NS‐P‐g‐C3N4‐Ni by complexation and highly selective production of formic acid (60%) is achieved. This work sheds light on the construction of effective well‐structured sites in photocatalytic CO2 reduction to produce value‐added products with higher selectivity and productivity. We describe the bias adjustment and downscaling to a resolution of 1 × 1 km of daily temperature, precipitation and solar radiation of a multimodel ensemble of Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) GCMs with the local observational data set BhutanClim for Bhutan and an analysis of the results for 1996–2100. The GCMs were selected based on their ability to reproduce local temporal and spatial precipitation patterns, resulting in a total of 14 models for each shared socioeconomic pathway (SSP). The results are shown for five global warming levels (GWLs) 1.5, 2, 3, 4 and 5°C, providing insight into the projected impacts of climate change at different warming levels. The daily temperature and precipitation data are publicly available, which is of great benefit for climate impact studies, such as ecological, hydrological or infrastructure‐related studies. In this paper, we discuss showcase climate indicators. Peak‐over‐threshold climate indicators such as hot days above 30°C are relevant for human health. In the capital city of Thimphu, these are currently rare, at 4 days per year, but might increase to more than 80 for GWL5.0. Precipitation increases in the summer months, but slightly decreases in the drier winter months. Accordingly, the 3‐month SPEI drought index is projected to increase in summer, but strongly decreases in the winter months, mostly pronounced in February. BACKGROUND RESULTS CONCLUSION High temperature stress (HTS) has become a serious threat to rice grain quality and few studies have examined the effects of HTS across multiple stages on rice grain quality. In the present study, we conducted 2 years of HTS treatments under three temperature regimes (32/22 °C, 40/30 °C and 44/34 °C) and HTS durations of 2 days and 4 days at three critical stages: booting, flowering, and a combination of booting and flowering. We employed the heat degree days (HDD) metric, which accounts for both the level and duration of HTS, to quantify the relationships between grain quality traits and HTS.The results revealed the diverse effects of HTS on rice grain quality at different stages, durations and temperature levels. HTS significantly (P < 0.05) reduced grain quality, with the highest sensitivities (reduction per 1 °C day−1 increase in HDD) observed at the flowering stage, followed by the combined and booting stages treatments under mild HTS treatment (40/30 °C). However, under extreme HTS treatments (44/34 °C) for 4 days, rice grains subjected to combined HTS treatment experienced complete mortality.Pre‐exposed to HTS at the booting stage within a certain intensity can alleviate the adverse effects of post‐flowering HTS on grain quality. Sunscreens may affect thermoregulation and sweating during exercise in warm climates. In this study, we compared the effects of three sunscreens on local sweating rate (LSR) during exercise under controlled conditions (32°C, relative humidity 55%). Fifteen subjects (8 men, 7 women) underwent 20-min cycles in four randomized conditions: control (CON), sunscreen A (SSA), sunscreen B (SSB) and sunscreen C (SSC). LSR was measured by a patch on the scapular region (p < .001). CON showed higher LSR (182.21 μL/min·dm2, CI95% 168 to 195 μL/min·dm2) compared to SSA (142.10 μL/min·dm2, CI95% 128 to 155 μL/min·dm2), SSB (158.06 μL/min·dm2, CI95% 144 to 171 μL/min·dm2), and SSC (159.00 μL/min·dm2, CI95% 145 to 172 μL/min·dm2). In men, SSA showed lower LSR compared to CON, SSB, and SSC (p < .05). On the other hand, no statistically significant differences were found in LSR between SSB, SSC, and CON conditions. In women, CON was superior to all sunscreens in LSR (p < .001), and there was no difference between them (SSA, SSB, SSC, p > .05). Sunscreen reduced LSR during moderate exercise in a hot and moderate humidity environment compared to CON, especially SSA in men and all sunscreens in women. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The flaring of gas is a double jeopardy of wasting valuable energy resource and environmental degradation. That had been the experience with the Niger Delta area since 1956 when oil was discovered in commercial quantity in the region. Gas flaring is an active contributor of Green House Gases (GHG) emissions, global warming, climate change crisis and the consequent acid rain, rising temperature and sea level, flooding, agricultural and aquatic food chain disruption. The Niger Delta area as a global spot rich in oil, gas, aquatic and agricultural foods had remained a paradox of plenty, poverty and hunger. In view of this stack reality, it is the concern of this study to determine if zero hunger can be achieved in the area by 2030 and make recommendations that will serve as blue print for national and global actualization SDG 2. The study adopted documentary research method, leveraged on Public–Private Partnership (PPP) and Win–Win Concept as frameworks of interpretation and unveiled that ending gas flaring is associated with inherent economic growth, environmental preservation and sustainable livelihood in and beyond Niger Delta. Global change is affecting the distribution and population dynamics of plant species across the planet, leading to trends such as shifts in distribution toward the poles and to higher elevations. Yet, we poorly understand why individual species respond differently to warming and other environmental changes, or how the trait composition of communities responds. Here we ask two questions regarding plant species and community changes over 42 years of global change in a temperate montane forest in Québec, Canada: (1) How did the trait composition, alpha diversity, and beta diversity of understory vascular plant communities change between 1970 and 2010, a period over which the region experienced 1.5°C of warming and changes in nitrogen deposition? (2) Can traits predict shifts in species elevation and abundance over this time period? For 46 understory vascular species, we locally measured six aboveground traits, and for 36 of those (not including shrubs), we also measured five belowground traits. Collectively, they capture leading dimensions of phenotypic variation that are associated with climatic and resource niches. At the community level, the trait composition of high‐elevation plots shifted, primarily for two root traits: specific root length decreased and rooting depth increased. The mean trait values of high‐elevation plots shifted over time toward values initially associated with low‐elevation plots. These changes led to trait homogenization across elevations. The community‐level shifts in traits mirrored the taxonomic shifts reported elsewhere for this site. At the species level, two of the three traits predicting changes in species elevation and abundance were belowground traits (low mycorrhizal fraction and shallow rooting). These findings highlight the importance of root traits, which, along with leaf mass fraction, were associated with shifts in distribution and abundance over four decades. Community‐level trait changes were largely similar across the elevational and temporal gradients. In contrast, traits typically associated with lower elevations at the community level did not predict differences among species in their shift in abundance or distribution, indicating a decoupling between species‐ and community‐level responses. Elevation‐dependent warming (EDW) has been a topic of intense debate due to limited observed data in global highland areas. This study aims to fill this gap by utilizing CRU and ERA5 datasets from 1981 to 2021 to explore the trends of climate change and its elevation dependency. The anomalies of temperature indicators (Tmean, Tmax, and Tmin) in both ERA5 and CRU showed significant warming trends over global highlands. Moreover, the response of temperature indicators to elevation across global highlands is not spatially uniform. The linear regression model based on the elevation showed significant warming signals for the temperature indicators at various elevations over the global highlands. On a regional scale, Tmean and Tmax predominantly showed linear EDW over EU highlands, while Tmean in Asian highlands exhibited EDW signals at 4–5 km. Tmin showed EDW at 2.5–5.5 km with ERA5 and 3–5 km with CRU. In the Andes, EDW was prominent at 2.5–4 km. Overall, EDW signals are evident in all studied regions but vary across them. While assessing the driving factors, the results of this study indicate that total column water vapour (TCWV), snow depth (SD), snow albedo, and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) correlated positively with the temperature indicators. These findings emphasize the significance of elevation‐specific interactions between environmental factors and temperature in forecasting temperature changes in mountainous areas. Additionally, temperature exhibited coherence with teleconnection indices from the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Asian and European (EU) highlands exhibited interzonal coherence with the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, while North American (NA) highlands showed coherence, followed by South American (SA) highlands. These findings provide a comprehensive understanding of EDW and its implications for highland regions globally, including the potential for more severe depletion of snow/ice resources in a warmer future. In conjunction with the pressing global issue of climate change and the associated concern over global warming, increasing interest has emerged in the exploration of carbon dioxide (CO2) as a resource for the generation of a diverse array of products intended to serve societal needs. This study presents the development of an ATP-free and NAD-balanced in vitro synthetic enzymatic biosystem (ivSEB), which comprises only five cascade thermophilic enzymes, designed for the synthesis of L-malate through CO2 fixation powered by the utilization of D-glucose as a substrate. This designed ivSEB yields two moles of L-malate from one mole of D-glucose and two moles of CO2. Through meticulous refinement of reaction conditions and enzyme loading amounts, this ivSEB has demonstrated its capability to produce 6.85 mM of L-malate via CO2 fixation from an initial 5 mM of D-glucose with a molar product yield of 68.5%, and 2.45 mM of L-lactate as a byproduct. In the pursuit of assessing the industrial feasibility of this ivSEB, the study further subjected the system to the utilization of a high concentration (45.70 mM) of D-glucose. The impacts of environmental change on Lake Biwa have been explored for decades, with water monitoring and palaeolimnological studies revealing how environmental forcing, including climate warming, eutrophication, water level manipulation and human manipulation of fish populations, has influenced the food web of Lake Biwa. However, these studies have rarely accounted for microbial food‐web components. This knowledge gap is mostly due to the lack of time series spanning more than a couple of decades, coupled with the high taxonomical expertise required to identify organisms belonging to very diverse groups. The use of a sedimentary DNA approach allows for the reconstruction of past changes in the diversity, composition and structure of the microbial eukaryotic community of aquatic systems. The application of 18S metabarcoding has been proven successful to describe the response of unicellular eukaryotes (protists) and aquatic fungi in lake ecosystems, encompassing a large taxonomic and functional diversity such as phototrophs, heterotrophs and mixotrophs. We applied 18S metabarcoding to 31 sediment core samples from Lake Biwa, spanning the past 100 years and explored the response of microbial eukaryotic communities to changes in multiple environmental stressors, including nutrient levels, lake water level, climate, as well as fish and zooplankton biomass for the period 1973–2010. We found that the manipulation of the water level and changes in fish community composition were the primary factors impacting (indirectly) the structure of the lake microbial eukaryotic community with minor, but significant, effects of climate warming and phosphorus levels. Co‐occurrence network analysis highlighted the potential food web impacts on the microbial eukaryotic community, suggesting that organisms from this compartment were impacted by both bottom‐up and top‐down processes. In the Earth's general circulation, polar jets act as baroclinic pumps of angular momentum and heat. Reanalysis datasets indicate that shear changes near jets induce upward displacements of the jet cores, suggesting a weakening thermodynamic pumping over the last 50 years. From secondary flow theory, a well‐established principle in fluid dynamics, an increased frequency of heatwaves and persistent winter storms is expected. The ageostrophic wind shear between 700 and 50 hPa indicates the strength of this secondary circulation. The weakening tendency during the reanalysis period also exists in multimodel simulations under the RCP8.5 emissions scenario for the 21st century. The reduction between the periods 2005–2025 and 2081–2100 reaches 18%, 5.3% and 19%, respectively, for the North America, Mid‐Europe and East Asia sectors of the Northern Hemisphere polar jet. Within this background, cold‐surge events are the result of synergic co‐working of several factors. The occurrence trend for transitional season winter extreme events also is examined. The winter extremes seemingly have larger temperature drops. However, in a warming climate, they emerge more rapidly from extreme cold states. The storm tracks, especially over North America, have equatorward extensions, indicating that winter storms can reach lower latitudes. Due to the temperature‐dependence of air viscosity, secondary flows decrease more slowly than the main zonal flow. This imposes an important adjustment to the traditional polar amplification effects on midlatitude winter extremes. During a warmer winter (the primary manifestation of a warmer climate), spatially uniform positive trends in cold extreme events are not expected. We analysed the thermal stress of intertidal species faced in three metrics, annual extreme high temperatures (T99), seasonal daily maximum temperatures (DMT) and heatwaves, and compared them with environmental temperatures.We found that T99 of body temperatures and their interannual warming rates are significantly higher than those of environmental temperatures. Moreover, there were non‐negligible mismatches between the seasonal thermal pattern and heatwaves of body temperatures and environmental temperatures, suggesting that the deleterious impacts of global warming on intertidal species are underestimated and cannot be directly revealed by environmental temperatures.Thermal stress patterns of body temperature were significantly different from those of environmental temperature, and the thermal stress faced by intertidal species had been persistently underestimated. The enforcement of a global hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) refrigerant phase down led to the introduction of hydrofluoroolefins (HFOs) as a low Global Warming Potential (GWP) substitute, given their low atmospheric lifetime. However, to this date it is not fully clear the long‐term atmospheric fate of HFOs primary degradation products: trifluoro acetaldehyde (TFE), trifluoro acetyl fluoride (TFF), and trifluoroacetic acid (TFA). It particularly concerns the possibility of forming HFC‐23, a potent global warming agent. Although the atmospheric reaction networks of TFE, TFF, and TFA have a fair level of complexity, the relevant atmospheric chemical pathways are well characterized in the literature, enabling a comprehensive hazard assessment of HFC‐23 formation as a secondary HFO breakdown product in diverse scenarios. A lower bound of the HFOs effective GWP in a baseline scenario is found above regulatory thresholds. Global warming has accelerated alpine glacier melting and led to an increased risk of glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs). This paper extracted glacial lake boundaries in the Tienshan Mountains of Central Asia from 1990 to 2023, analyzed their spatiotemporal variations and evaluated their risk levels under current and future scenarios. The results show that glacial lakes are predominantly distributed in the Central and Western Tienshan, accounting for 75% of the total number in the Tienshan region. The number and area of glacial lakes increased by 148% (from 1837 to 4557) and 71.83% (from 119.73 to 205.73 km2) during 1990 to 2023, with moraine lake expansion predominating. In the Western Tienshan, the high or very high risk of GLOF is 3–4 times that of other areas. By the middle of the twenty-first century, GLOF risk will continue to increase, especially in the Western Tienshan. With the proceeding of global warming and water eutrophication, the phenomenon of green tide has garnered significant societal interest. Consequently, researchers had increasingly focused on the potential applications of green algae biomass, particularly its polysaccharides. The polysaccharide serves as the primary active constituent of green algae and has demonstrated numerous advantageous biological activities, including antioxidant, antiviral, anticoagulant, hypolipidemic and immuno-modulatory activities. The favorable bioavailability and solubility of green algae oligosaccharides are attributed to their low molecular weight. So there has been a growing interest in researching green algae polysaccharides and oligosaccharides for the utilization of marine biological resources. This review summarized the extraction, purification, chemical structure, composition, biological activity, and potential applications prospect of polysaccharides and oligosaccharides derived from green algae. Adaptation of reef-building corals to global warming depends upon standing heritable variation in tolerance traits upon which selection can act. Yet limited knowledge exists on heat-tolerance variation among conspecific individuals separated by metres to hundreds of kilometres. Here, we performed standardized acute heat-stress assays to quantify the thermal tolerance traits of 709 colonies of Acropora spathulata from 13 reefs spanning 1060 km (9.5° latitude) of the Great Barrier Reef. Thermal thresholds for photochemical efficiency and chlorophyll retention varied considerably among individual colonies both among reefs (approximately 6°C) and within reefs (approximately 3°C). Although tolerance rankings of colonies varied between traits, the most heat-tolerant corals (i.e. top 25% of each trait) were found at virtually all reefs, indicating widespread phenotypic variation. Reef-scale environmental predictors explained 12–62% of trait variation. Corals exposed to high thermal averages and recent thermal stress exhibited the greatest photochemical performance, probably reflecting local adaptation and stress pre-acclimatization, and the lowest chlorophyll retention suggesting stress pre-sensitization. Importantly, heat tolerance relative to local summer temperatures was the greatest on higher latitude reefs suggestive of higher adaptive potential. Platycodon grandiflorus has long been used for its medicinal, culinary and ornamental properties. With increasing market demand and the depletion of wild resources, understanding the distribution and factors affecting its habitat suitability is crucial for its conservation and sustainable utilization. This study aims to predict the suitable habitat for P. grandiflorus in China considering current and future climate scenarios. The MaxEnt model, with an AUC value of 0.846, demonstrated good predictive ability for the current and future distribution of P. grandiflorus. It also identified the central, eastern, and southern regions as suitable habitats, with the critical environmental factors being precipitation, temperature, and elevation. Future scenarios under both SSP126 and SSP585 projections indicate an increase in suitable habitats, particularly in northeastern and central China, albeit with a shift in the distribution center towards the northeast by 2041–2060 and 2081–2100 under different scenarios. P. grandiflorus' distribution is significantly influenced by environmental factors, with precipitation and temperature being pivotal. Taken together, our study predicts an expansion of suitable habitats under future climate scenarios and the northward shift in the distribution center underlines the impact of global warming on the distribution of P. grandiflorus. Different geographical zones have regional heterogeneity in underlying earth surface structure and microclimate which result in different evolution trends and their response to climate change varies in extreme rainfalls in these zones. In the Guizhou province of China, there are complex landforms, which lead to spatial redistribution of rainfall, frequent extreme rainfall, and disasters high risk of geologic disasters. Research on extreme climate in Guizhou mostly paid attention to its spatio-temporal characteristics and modeling, but lack of analysis on its characteristics of extreme rainfall variability and response to temperature changes under different subsurface conditions. This study investigated the characteristics of the extreme rainfall spatiotemporal and recurrence periods in Guizhou province and discussed the relationship between the response of extreme rainfall to temperature change. Daily rainfall data from 1990 to 2020 and 2021–2100 at 31 meteorological observation stations throughout the province were collected to calculate extreme precipitation. This research had the following results. (1) Both historical and future periods show an upward trend in extreme rainfall in Guizhou province, with a spatial distribution pattern of "high in the south and low in the north, high in the east and low in the west" and "high in the southeast and low in the northwest", respectively; the spatial distribution of extreme rainfall under each recurrence period is consistent with the non-recurrence period. (2) Both historical and future periods show an upward trend in temperature in Guizhou province, with a spatial distribution consistent with that of the extreme rainfall in the corresponding period. (3) The change in extreme rainfall intensity with increasing temperature is almost always greater than the C–C rate for different periods and underlying earth surface structure; Extreme rainfall has a Hook response structure to temperature change, and the climate response structure shifts to the right with climate warming. Significant genetic differentiation and reciprocal monophyly exist between populations of the two subranges of O. aveyronensis, despite a very recent divergence time as young as ca. 1500 generations ago. Moreover, paleo‐ENM analyses support that the disjunct geographic distribution of O. aveyronensis is consistent with a range split of a broad ancestral range, contraction and distinct longitudinal and latitudinal shifts in response to climate warming during the Holocene.The congruence of the results obtained from both population genomics and ENM approaches documents how very recent continental allopatric divergence initiated speciation in this system. Background: Global warming causes heat stress, a significant bioclimatic factor affecting poultry welfare. The effects of heat stress on the morphology of the Japanese quail lungs were investigated in this study. A total of 16 adult Japanese quail were randomly distributed into four groups: a control group (CT), acute heat stress (AH), chronic heat stress with 7 days (CH1) and chronic heat stress with 28 days exposure (CH2). The CT group were maintained at 25 °C temperature, the AH group were exposed to 38 °C temperature for 24 h, and the CH groups were exposed to 35 °C for seven and 28 days. At the end of exposure, the birds were euthanised, and lung tissues were collected and processed for microscopy. Tissue sections were stained using H&E stain, Gomori's stain and immunofluorescence labelling. Results: This study showed no significant difference in body weight, cloacal temperature, respiratory rate and lung parameters in heat-stressed groups compared with the control group. However, microscopic analyses revealed blood congestion, leakage of blood into the airway, inflammatory response and tissue breakage in the heat-stressed groups. Conclusions: Heat stress harmed the lungs of the Japanese quail based on duration and intensity. The negative impact could cause instant mortality, but if the quail survives the initial impact, it can adapt to the heat stress with long-term consequences on its performance. Dengue is an important vector-borne disease occurring globally. Dengue virus (DENV) infection can result in a potentially life-threatening disease. To date, no DENV-specific antiviral treatment is available. Moreover, an equally effective panserotype dengue virus vaccine is not available. Recently, two DENV vaccines, Dengvaxia and Qdenga, were licensed for limited use. However, none of them have been approved in Bangladesh. DENV is transmitted by Aedes mosquitoes, and global warming caused by climate change favoring Aedes breeding plays an important role in increasing DENV infections in Bangladesh. Dengue is a serious public health concern in Bangladesh. In the year 2023, Bangladesh witnessed its largest dengue outbreak, with the highest number of dengue cases (n  =  321,179) and dengue-related deaths (n  =  1,705) in a single epidemic year. There is an increased risk of severe dengue in individuals with preexisting DENV-specific immunoglobulin G if the individuals become infected with different DENV serotypes. To date, vector control has remained the mainstay for controlling dengue; therefore, an immediate, strengthened, and effective vector control program is critical and should be regularly performed for controlling dengue outbreaks in Bangladesh. In addition, the use of DENV vaccine in curbing dengue epidemics in Bangladesh requires more consideration and judgment by the respective authority of Bangladesh. This review provides perspectives on the control and prevention of dengue outbreaks. We also discuss the challenges of DENV vaccine use to reduce dengue epidemics infection in Bangladesh. A primary driver of deep-ocean mixing is breaking of internal tides generated via interactions of barotropic tides with topography. It is important to understand how the energy conversion from barotropic to internal tides responds to global warming. Here we address this question by applying a linear model of internal tide generation to coupled global climate model simulations under a high carbon emission scenario. The energy conversion to high-mode internal tides is projected to rise by about 8% by the end of the 21st century, whereas the energy conversion to low-mode internal tides remains nearly unchanged. The intensified near-bottom stratification under global warming increases energy conversion into both low and high-mode internal tides. In contrast, the intensified depth-averaged stratification reduces the modal horizontal wavenumber of internal tides, leading to increased (decreased) energy conversion into high (low)- mode internal tides. Our findings imply stronger mixing over rough topography under global warming, which should be properly parameterized in climate models for more accurate projections of future climate changes. Climate warming disproportionately impacts countries in the Global South by increasing extreme heat exposure. However, geographic disparities in adaptation capacity are unclear. Here, we assess global inequality in green spaces, which urban residents critically rely on to mitigate outdoor heat stress. We use remote sensing data to quantify daytime cooling by urban greenery in the warm seasons across the ~500 largest cities globally. We show a striking contrast, with Global South cities having ~70% of the cooling capacity of cities in the Global North (2.5 ± 1.0 °C vs. 3.6 ± 1.7 °C). A similar gap occurs for the cooling adaptation benefits received by an average resident in these cities (2.2 ± 0.9 °C vs. 3.4 ± 1.7 °C). This cooling adaptation inequality is due to discrepancies in green space quantity and quality between cities in the Global North and South, shaped by socioeconomic and natural factors. Our analyses further suggest a vast potential for enhancing cooling adaptation while reducing global inequality. A 1.5-fold gap exists in green space cooling adaptation between cities in the Global South and North. Climate models enable an analysis of observation data related to global warming and climate changes, and they allow making predictions for near the future progress of climate changes. In this study, basics of the climate model, which is used in the analysis of global warming and climate change topics, and the analyses that can be carried out by using these models, are reviewed. Simplified energy balance model considers the balance state between the incoming solar energy from the sun and the radiation energy outgoing from the earth to space. In this perspective, the model allows considering the factors, which can influence global warming, as radiative forces that are acting on the balance state. Thus enabling simplified analyzes of climate changes based on the energy budget even though the climate changes depend on very complex and dynamically changing meteorological and geological factors. In this study, within the framework of basic radiation laws, such as Stefan-Boltzmann and Wien Displacement, the absorption and reflection rates of the solar radiation by the earth, and the atmospheric window concepts, which provide energy escape from the earth's atmosphere to the space within the long-wavelength of the electromagnetic spectrum, were reviewed. In this context, the radiative forcing due to the Albedo effect and the radiative forcing effects due to the accumulation of CO2 molecules in the atmosphere, which have the potential to alter depending on human activities, were explained. Illustrative examples and observation data-based calculations and analyzes are presented to make basic concepts and presented models easy-to-understand. Drosophila subobscura is distributed across Europe, the Near East, and the Americas, while its sister species, Drosophila madeirensis , is endemic to the island of Madeira in the Atlantic Ocean. D. subobscura is known for its strict light-dependence in mating and its unique courtship displays, including nuptial gift-giving. D. subobscura has also attracted the interest of researchers because of its abundant variations in chromosomal polymorphisms correlated to the latitude and season, which have been used as a tool to track global climate warming. Although D. madeirensis can be an important resource for understanding the evolutionary underpinning of these genetic characteristics of D. subobscura , little work has been done on the biology of this species. Here, we used a HiFi long-read sequencing data set to produce a de novo genome assembly for D. madeirensis. This assembly comprises a total of 111 contigs spanning 135.5 Mb and has an N50 of 24.2 Mb and a BUSCO completeness score of 98.6%. Each of the 6 chromosomes of D. madeirensis consisted of a single contig except for some centromeric regions. Breakpoints of the chromosomal inversions between D. subobscura and D. madeirensis were characterized using this genome assembly, updating some of the previously identified locations. Drosophila subobscura is an excellent model species for testing genetic variation in thermal adaptation due to its rich inversion chromosomal polymorphism. In Palearctic populations, the inversions of this species can be classified as "cold", "warm" or "nonthermal" adapted. Based on this classification the Chromosomal Thermal Index (CTI) was developed, which allows measuring the thermal adaptation of populations and monitoring changes over time. Here, we aim to use this index in American colonizing populations of D. subobscura for the first time to obtain new information on the species thermal adaptation. Thus, thermal adapted inversions ("cold" and "warm") were defined for the American continent and CTI was computed in South American (1981 and 1999 samples) and North American (1985 and 2004 samples) populations of D. subobscura. In general, both American populations showed an inverse relationship between CTI values and latitude, with CTI values decreasing when latitude increases. When comparing populations sampled in different years, an increase in CTI values was detected in four out of six temporal comparisons (only one was significant) of South America (1981 and 1999) and in six out of seven populations of North America (1985 and 2004). A global analysis using a one‐way repeated measures anova of CTI values in both American hemispheres showed a trend of increase for "warm" adapted inversions in Chile and North America, but this increase was only significant for the latter. The deployment of engineered substrates seeded with newly settled corals is a technique being developed to increase the numbers of juvenile corals on reefs with the goal of improving reef resilience in response to climate warming. Using a hierarchical sampling design, we explored the spatial scales at which seeded coral (spat) survival and growth varied in situ and investigated the environmental drivers of seeded spat success in the southern inshore Great Barrier Reef. After 10 months, variation in spat survival and size was greatest at the smallest spatial scale (1–2 m) (27 and 11% of variation, respectively), indicating the scale at which the main drivers of post‐settlement survival and growth are occurring. Crustose coralline algae (CCA) cover on seeding units prior to deployment was a significant driver of short‐ and long‐term spat survival (22% of variation). Survival of Acropora millepora and A. muricata spat did not differ according to benthic community variation. Increasing cover of branching Acropora corals was correlated with decreased survival and the size of Montipora aequituberculata spat, although CCA cover on plugs remained the most influential factor determining survival. Interspecific variation in spat survival and size and higher survival and size in the side‐facing orientation of the seeding units suggest natural variation in response to the seeding method, warranting further experiments to refine species selection and deployment methods prior to upscaling. High within‐site variation in seeded spat survival and size highlights the need for future studies of ecological factors driving post‐settlement mortality at fine spatial scales. To mitigate global warming, phasing out coal in the global energy system orderly and rapidly is an important near-term strategy. However, the majority of coal-fired plants in China have operated for less than 15 years. Accelerated coal power plant retirements would lead to substantial asset stranding. Coal-to-nuclear (C2N) technology offers a potential solution by replacing coal boilers in existing coal-fired plants with nuclear reactors. In this study, the G4-ECONS model was used to assess the economics of repowering a 600 MW supercritical coal-fired power plant with two 272 MWe high-temperature gas-cooled reactors. The timeline for the C2N project and the additional cost of dispatching electricity from the grid during retrofitting were discussed. Results showed that the C2N total capitalized costs are 19.4% (baseline estimate, USD 5297.6/kW) and 11.1% (conservative estimate, USD 5847.2/kW) lower than the greenfield project (USD 6576.5/kW), respectively. And C2N projects need to reduce LUEC by at least 20% to become competitive. This study can inform engineering design decisions leading to more precise and cost-effective C2N projects. The glaciers in southeastern Tibet Plateau (SETP) influenced by oceanic climate are sensitive to global warming, and there remains a notable deficiency in accurate multitemporal change analyses of these glaciers. We conduct glacier inventories in the Yigong Zangbo River Basin (YZRB) in SETP for the years 1988, 2015, and 2023 utilizing Landsat and Sentinel-2 imagery, and analyze the glacier spatiotemporal variation incorporating the existing glacier inventory data. Since the 1970s until 2023, the glaciers significantly retreated at a rate of 0.76 ± 0.11%·a−1, with the area decreasing from 2583.09 ± 88.80 km2 to 1635.89 ± 71.74 km2, and the ice volume reducing from 221.7017 ± 7.9618 km3 to 152.7429 ± 6.1747 km3. The most significant retreat occurred in glaciers smaller than 1 km2. Additionally, glaciers on southern aspects retreated slower than the northern counterparts. The glaciers in the western YZRB witnessed a significantly greater shrinkage rate than those in the eastern section, with the most pronounced changes occurring in Aso Longbu River Basin. Furthermore, severe glacier mass deficits were observed from 2000 to 2019, averaging a loss rate of 0.57 ± 0.06 m w.e. a−1. The continuous rise in air temperature has primarily induced a general widespread glacier change in the YZRB. However, diverse topography led to spatial variability in glacier changes with discrepancies as large as several times. The features of individual glaciers, such as glacier size, debris cover, and the development of ice-contact glacial lakes enhanced the local complexity of glacier change and elusive response behaviors to climate warming led by the different topographic conditions. Anthropogenic activities have escalated CH4 emissions, exacerbating global warming, yet specialized bacteria known as Methanotrophs play a key role in mitigating atmospheric CH4 levels by consuming 30-70% of emitted methane. This study focuses on exploring the culturable methanotrophic population within Muthukuda mangrove sediments, an unexplored reservoir of methanotrophic diversity. The sediment sample yielded a methanotrophic bacterial count of 1.5 x 103 CFU/g, leading to the selection of three unique bacterial morphotypes (NCT270, NCT271, and NCT272) for in-depth investigation. Optimal growth was observed at pH 8, with peak growth at 30°C, while extreme temperatures of 4°C and 40°C inhibited growth across all isolates. Salinity levels between 20 and 30 ppt supported optimal growth, with strains displaying tolerance to various stressors. Methane served as the sole carbon source for all experiments, with positive urease production noted after 7 days of incubation. Microscopic and biochemical analyses suggested the classification of strains NCT270, NCT271, and NCT272 within Group I methanotrophic genera: Methylomicrobium, Methyloscarcina, and Methylomonas, respectively. BLASTn analysis of 16S rRNA gene sequences shared high similarities with known methanotrophic species Methyloscarcina fibrate (ON834586) with 99.28%, Methylomicrobium album (ON834587) with 98.77% and Methylomonas methanica (ON834588) with 99.15%. As climate change urgency intensifies, understanding its impact on destinations and the development of adaptation strategies becomes critical for sustainable tourism. This article, through a meta-analysis of 290 climate change elasticity estimates in tourism from 34 studies, examines the influence of climate factors and tourists' adaptive behaviours on tourism demand. It also projects the situations countries will face by 2050 under ongoing climate change scenarios. Findings suggest that low- and middle-income economies and Small Island Developing States, despite their minimal carbon contributions, will face significant tourism losses. In contrast, high-income countries might see increased travel demand and lead to more emissions. This will aggravate climatic conditions and inflict greater losses on less-developed communities. The ability of farming communities worldwide to provide balanced diets for the growing world population is enunciated clearly in the second of the United Nation's sustainable development goals, namely 'End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture'. Success will be dependent on our ability to preserve the economic sustainability of livestock production in small-holder farming systems which will require regenerative approaches to reverse land degradation and retain biodiversity. Animal products are important components of world food baskets because their nutrient profile most closely resembles the dietary requirements of mankind. Key micronutrients, including iron, vitamin A, vitamin B12, zinc and iodine, are more readily available from animal-sourced foods, which are critical for a balanced diet for those with higher nutrient requirements such as growing children and pregnant and lactating women. The developing Asian economy of Laos, together with that of the Pacific Island nations of Vanuatu and Samoa provide some interesting contrasts in servicing the nutritional needs of their predominantly rural populations as their respective governments address the issues of undernutrition and hidden hunger. The paper explores some of the challenges that governments face in sustaining resilient animal production to supply essential nutrients for food baskets across our region. These include the broader contexts of resource availability, education, cultural traditions, socioeconomic status, gender equality and women's empowerment. The role of animal products in providing balanced diets to minimise nutrient deficiencies in the peoples of Laos, Vanuatu and Samoa is reviewed in this perspective. Background: Mosquito-borne orthobunyaviruses are a growing priority for public and animal health in Canada. It is anticipated that disease incidence will increase due to a warming climate, given that habitats are expanding for reservoir hosts and vectors, particularly in Canada. Little is known about the ecology of primary vectors that perpetuate these orthobunyaviruses, including the viral transmission cycle and the impact of climatic and landscape factors. Methods: A scoping review was conducted to describe the current state of knowledge on the epidemiology of orthobunyaviruses relevant to Canada. The Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses extension for Scoping Reviews guidelines was used to characterize studies focused on vector species. A literature search was conducted in six databases and gray literature. Eligible studies characterized orthobunyavirus epidemiology related to vector species, including viral competency, geospatial distributions, seasonal trends, and/or risk factors. Results: A total of 1734 unique citations were identified. Screening of these citations revealed 172 relevant studies, from which 87 studies presented primary data related to vectors. The orthobunyaviruses included Cache Valley virus (CVV), Jamestown Canyon virus (JCV), Snowshoe Hare virus (SHV), and La Crosse virus (LACV). Surveillance was the predominant study focus, with most citations representing the United States, specifically, LACV surveillance in Tennessee, followed by CVV and JCV in Connecticut. Orthobunyaviruses were detected in many mosquito species across multiple genera, with high vector specificity only being reported for LACV, which included Aedes triseriatus, Aedes albopictus, and Aedes japonicus. Peridomestic areas were positively associated with infected mosquitoes compared with dense forests. Orthobunyavirus infections, coinfections, and gut microbiota affected mosquito feeding and breeding behavior. Conclusion: Knowledge gaps included Canadian surveillance data, disease modeling, and risk projections. Further research in these areas, especially accounting for climate change, is needed to guide health policy for prevention of orthobunyaviral disease. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The elemental allelopathy hypothesis states that the metal‐rich litter of hyper‐accumulating species may have a detrimental impact on neighbouring plants giving a competitive advantage to hyper‐accumulators. Here, we aim to specify the conditions of application of this hypothesis in realistic field conditions, and its relative importance compared to other positive effects found in metalliferous systems.We disentangled the litter‐induced elemental allelopathy and canopy effects of two metallophyte species (Arenaria multicaulis and Hutchinsia alpina) with different levels of leaf Zn and Cd accumulation on two ecotypes of Agrostis capillaris with different levels of metal tolerance. The experiment was conducted in two habitats with contrasting pollution levels in a former mining valley in the Pyrenees (France).The metallophyte species that accumulates more metals (Hutchinsia alpina) showed a strong elemental allelopathy effect on the target with lower metal tolerance in the habitat with lower pollution level, while the metallophyte species that accumulates less metals (Arenaria multicaulis) had no litter effect. Both metallophyte species had positive canopy effects likely due to improvement of micro‐climatic conditions. The drought that occurred during the experiment may have influenced these canopy effects, increasing their importance during the course of the study. For Hutchinsia alpina, the positive canopy effects were stronger than the negative litter effects, resulting in overall positive effects on both target ecotypes.Synthesis. Our results brought a better understanding of the occurrence of elemental allelopathy in metallophyte communities and its relative importance as compared to micro‐climatic facilitation in a global warming context. Rivers worldwide are under stress from eutrophication and nitrate pollution, but the ecological consequences overlap with climate change, and the resulting interactions may be unexpected and still unexplored. The Po River basin (northern Italy) is one of the most agriculturally productive and densely populated areas in Europe. It remains unclear whether the climate change impacts on the thermal and hydrological regimes are already affecting nutrient dynamics and transport to coastal areas. The present work addresses the long-term trends (1992–2020) of nitrogen and phosphorus export by investigating both the annual magnitude and the seasonal patterns and their relationship with water temperature and discharge trajectories. Despite the constant diffuse and point sources in the basin, a marked decrease (-20%) in nitrogen export, mostly as nitrate, was recorded in the last decade compared to the 1990s, while no significant downward trend was observed for phosphorus. The water temperature of the Po River has warmed, with the most pronounced signals in summer (+0.13°C/year) and autumn (+0.16°C/year), together with the strongest increase in the number of warm days (+70%–80%). An extended seasonal window of warm temperatures and the persistence of low flow periods are likely to create favorable conditions for permanent nitrate removal via denitrification, resulting in a lower delivery of reactive nitrogen to the sea. The present results show that climate change-driven warming may enhance nitrogen processing by increasing respiratory river metabolism, thereby reducing export from spring to early autumn, when the risk of eutrophication in coastal zones is higher. Global warming is an environmental issue that threatens life on Earth. A significant rise in global temperature at the end of the century is estimated to be 2.4 ◦C, which necessitates action. The growth of energy needs urges scholars/researchers to think about developing suitable solutions. The key goal is to achieve zero-net emissions by 2050 in accordance with the goals outlined in the Paris Agreement (Climate Accords). To accomplish this, it is vital to have a strong strategy that initially includes high emissions reduction goals and addresses the challenges of global warming on our planet. Therefore, by 2050, the global energy strategy aims to eliminate emissions from the energy industry to zero. It is worth noting that most energy of the energy consumed comes from transport, power generation, industry, and buildings. The use of renewable technology is a method that is widely recommended to eliminate such challenges. Solar energy has two main technologies: solar photovoltaic (PV) and concentrating solar power (CSP), which have great potential in fulfilling energy needs. This work provides insight into solar energy technology’s role in global decarbonisation and towards net-zero emissions by 2050 through wide deployment and energy yield. The perspectives of solar energy technologies can save the environment by reducing emissions and energy supply, lowering energy bills, and creating job opportunities. Summary: The diversity of plant–pollinator interactions is grounded in floral resources, with nectar considered one of the main floral rewards plants produce for pollinators. However, a global evaluation of the number of animal‐pollinated nectar‐producing angiosperms and their distribution world‐wide remains elusive.We compiled a thorough database encompassing 7621 plant species from 322 families to estimate the number and proportion of nectar‐producing angiosperms reliant on animal pollination. Through extensive sampling of plant communities, we also explored the interplay between nectar production, floral resource diversity, latitudinal and elevational gradients, contemporary climate, and environmental characteristics.Roughly 223 308 animal‐pollinated angiosperms are nectar‐producing, accounting for 74.4% of biotic‐pollinated species. Global distribution patterns of nectar‐producing plants reveal a distinct trend along latitudinal and altitudinal gradients, with increased proportions of plants producing nectar in high latitudes and altitudes. Conversely, tropical communities in warm and moist climates exhibit greater floral resource diversity and a lower proportion of nectar‐producing plants.These findings suggest that ecological trends driven by climate have fostered the diversification of floral resources in warmer and less seasonal climates, reducing the proportion of solely nectar‐producing plants. Summary: Climate warming poses a significant threat to global crop production and food security. However, our understanding of the molecular mechanisms governing thermoresponsive development in crops remains limited.Here we report that the auxiliary subunit of N‐terminal acetyltransferase A (NatA) in rice OsNAA15 is a prerequisite for rice thermoresponsive growth. OsNAA15 produces two isoforms OsNAA15.1 and OsNAA15.2, via temperature‐dependent alternative splicing. Among the two, OsNAA15.1 is more likely to form a stable and functional NatA complex with the potential catalytic subunit OsNAA10, leading to a thermoresponsive N‐terminal acetylome. Intriguingly, while OsNAA15.1 promotes plant growth under elevated temperatures, OsNAA15.2 exhibits an inhibitory effect.We identified two glycolate oxidases (GLO1/5) as major substrates from the thermoresponsive acetylome. These enzymes are involved in hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) biosynthesis via glycolate oxidation. N‐terminally acetylated GLO1/5 undergo their degradation through the ubiquitin‐proteasome system. This leads to reduced reactive oxygen species (ROS) production, thereby promoting plant growth, particularly under high ambient temperatures.Conclusively, our findings highlight the pivotal role of N‐terminal acetylation in orchestrating the glycolate‐mediated ROS homeostasis to facilitate thermoresponsive growth in rice. Warming-induced carbon loss via ecosystem respiration (Re) is probably intensifying in the alpine grassland ecosystem of the Tibetan Plateau owing to more accelerated warming and the higher temperature sensitivity of Re (Q10). However-little is known about the patterns and controlling factors of Q10 on the plateau, impeding the comprehension of the intensity of terrestrial carbon–climate feedbacks for these sensitive and vulnerable ecosystems. Here, we synthesized and analyzed multiyear observations from 14 sites to systematically compare the spatiotemporal variations of Q10 values in diverse climate zones and ecosystems, and further explore the relationships between Q10 and environmental factors. Moreover, structural equation modeling was utilized to identify the direct and indirect factors predicting Q10 values during the annual, growing, and non-growing seasons. The results indicated that the estimated Q10 values were strongly dependent on temperature, generally, with the average Q10 during different time periods increasing with air temperature and soil temperature at different measurement depths (5 cm, 10 cm, 20 cm). The Q10 values differentiated among ecosystems and climatic zones, with warming-induced Q10 declines being stronger in colder regions than elsewhere based on spatial patterns. NDVI was the most cardinal factor in predicting annual Q10 values, significantly and positively correlated with Q10. Soil temperature (Ts) was identified as the other powerful predictor for Q10, and the negative Q10–Ts relationship demonstrates a larger terrestrial carbon loss potentiality in colder than in warmer regions in response to global warming. Note that the interpretations of the effect of soil moisture on Q10 were complicated, reflected in a significant positive relationship between Q10 and soil moisture during the growing season and a strong quadratic correlation between the two during the annual and non-growing season. In recent decades, the annual mean temperature has increased, with unusual alternations of hot and cold years. In addition, the changes in temporal precipitation patterns are caused by complex interactions between temperature change, the global water cycle, and other components of the Earth's systems. To construct a statistical model of these temporal patterns in terms of temperature and precipitation, we propose a logistic mixture of spatial multivariate penalized regression splines for temporal profiles and apply this model to the contiguous United States climate data over 123 years (1900 to 2022) at 252 weather stations. The results reveal that the proposed model identifies climatologically meaningful clusters of weather stations in the contiguous United States with two important meteorological variables, temperature and precipitation, identifying the climate change patterns of each climate zone. The surface air temperature increased in the Northeast and West (Mountain and Pacific) regions, where the climate is affected by the continental Arctic air. A notable increment of precipitation also occurred in the Northeast. In contrast, the South region, where the climate is affected by the tropical Atlantic Ocean, is more stable than other regions in terms of year-to-year variations in temperature and precipitation.
