A Phase I clinical trial has been initiated at the University of Arizona Cancer Center which combines escalating oral doses of the polyamine biosynthesis inhibitor alpha-difluoromethylornithine (DFMO), with systemic hyperthermia (approximately 41.5 degrees C) in the treatment of metastatic melanoma. The rationale for the combination of hyperthermia and polyamine biosynthesis inhibitors in the treatment of human cancers includes studies which show that depletion of endogenous polyamines, as a result of treatment with DFMO, sensitizes both rodent and human tumor cells to the cytotoxic effects of hyperthermia. Heat shock induces the first enzyme in polyamine catabolism, spermidine/spermine N1-acetyltransferase (N1-SAT). The consequently acetylated forms of spermidine and spermine are then constitutively oxidized by the enzyme polyamine oxidase (PAO). Both CHO and human A549 lung cancer cells exhibit heat-inducible polyamine acetylation, display potent heat sensitization after polyamine depletion, and ultimately reveal prolonged expression of thermotolerance. Conversely, HeLa cells do not demonstrate heat-inducible polyamine catabolism, are not sensitized to heat with DFMO, and display more rapid kinetics of thermotolerance decay. These laboratory studies suggest that enhancement of the cytotoxic action of hyperthermia by DFMO occurs as a consequence of the inhibition of polyamine catabolism, a heat-inducible process that affords some form of protection to cells undergoing heat stress. Human melanoma cultures demonstrate heat-inducible polyamine catabolism and are sensitized to hyperthermic cytotoxicity by DFMO. To date, 24 systemic hyperthermia treatments have been delivered to nine patients with metastatic melanoma in conjunction with oral DFMO under this Phase I clinical trial.

Participatory research is a useful technique for collecting basic data over a large geographic area. Garlic production was chosen as a participatory research study focus in Maine. Project participants (285) received bulbs to plant, monitored their crop, and reported data online. Participants received a monthly educational newsletter to improve their garlic production and maintain interest in the project. The project introduced many new gardeners to growing garlic for the first time. Participants overwhelmingly reported they shared the information they learned and that they plan to continue to grow garlic. The successful project benefited Maine growers and Extension staff.

Remote experimentation laboratories (REL) are systems based on real equipment that allow students to carry out a laboratory practice through the Internet on the computer. In engineering, there have been numerous initiatives to implement REL over recent years, given the fundamental role of laboratory activities. However, in the past efforts have concentrated on laboratory groups interacting face to face, disregarding the capacities of distributed student collaborative environments. This article proposes a model for the implementation of REL in a distributed collaborative scenario, focusing on two crucial key elements: shared knowledge and interaction for collaboration. The model focuses on the methodological aspects of executing REL in a distributed collaborative scenario and disregards technical aspects of the implementation. This study analyses distributed collaborative scenarios where the teacher plays a fundamental role in REL configuration to ensure group collaboration. The new model introduced presents diverse aspects that are associated with the methodological implementation of REL in the field of engineering; hence it is to be regarded as a foundation for teachers developing REL in distributed collaborative scenarios. Compared with White persons, Black/African American persons in the United States continue to experience high rates of educational deficits and employment stagnation as well as lower college graduation rates. This study examined the influences on Black/African American and White college students' high school completion, college attendance, and career choice. Results indicate that future income and future status have a greater influence on the career choice of Black/African American college students than on the career choice of White college students. The authors discuss these findings and present implications for career development professionals. (Contains 1 table.)

This study explored the impact of a Cultural Self-Analysis (CSA) Project on early childhood undergraduate preservice teachers' cultural awareness and dispositions toward working with culturally diverse students and families. The project was based on the ABC's of Cultural Understanding and Communication, a model designed to facilitate the development of cultural competencies in preservice and inservice teachers. Participants reported that the CSA Project experience increased their cultural self-awareness, ability to identify and appreciate cultural differences, and ability to convey the importance of understanding different cultures to enhance home-school interactions and communication with students and families from diverse backgrounds. Today more than ever, preparation for diversity is essential for all teachers. Hence, teacher preparation programs are charged with preparing culturally competent teachers who have the knowledge, skills, and disposition to work with children and families from cultures different from their own. This article investigates an innovative approach, the Cultural Self-Analysis (CSA) Project, to accomplish this task with 26 prospective early childhood teachers. CSA Project steps are presented. Data collected on multiple levels were analyzed using constant comparative methodologies. Findings from this initial investigation suggest the CSA Project holds promise as an approach to prepare culturally responsive teachers in three major ways. Participants reported increased confidence and comfort, preparedness to facilitate home connections with culturally diverse persons, and enlightenment of teacher roles/responsibilities beyond academic instruction. This study investigated users' IoT privacy and security concerns. The study looked at several variables, including job level, daily use of IoT, daily time spent using IoT, age, and gender. Data were collected from employees in various organizations using an instrument with two constructs. The findings showed that older workers in higher job levels and more frequent IoT users had significantly deeper IoT privacy concerns. Additionally, higher job levels and frequency of IoT use significantly influenced employees' security concerns. To (a) identify rates of hospital readmission and emergency department (ED) re-presentation for asthma within a 12-month period, (b) estimate the effects of modifiable hospital, general practitioner (GP) and home environmental factors on hospital readmission, ED re-presentations and rescue oral corticosteroid use. We recruited 767 children aged 3–18 years who were admitted to 3 hospitals in Victoria, Australia between 2017 and 2018 with a validated diagnosis of asthma on chart review. Primary outcome was hospital readmission with asthma within 12 months of index admission. Secondary outcomes were ED re-presentation for asthma and rescue oral corticosteroid use. All outcomes were identified through linked administrative datasets. Their caregivers and 277 nominated GPs completed study surveys regarding the home environment and their usual asthma management practices respectively. Within 12 months of an index admission for asthma 263 (34.3%) participants were readmitted to a hospital for asthma, with participants between the ages of 3–5 years accounting for 69.2% of those readmitted. The estimated effect of GP reported guideline discordant care on the odds of readmission was OR 1.57, 95% CI 1.00–2.47, p = 0.05. None of the hospital or home environmental factors appeared to be associated with hospital readmissions. Hospital readmissions among Australian children with asthma are increasing, and linked datasets are important for objectively identifying the health services burden of asthma.
