Abstract

Photoproduction of the ω meson on the proton has been experimentally studied near the threshold. The total cross sections are determined at incident energies ranging from 1.09 to 1.15 GeV. The 1/2 and 3/2 spin-averaged scattering length aωp and effective range rωp between the ω meson and proton are estimated from the shape of the total cross section as a function of the incident photon energy: aωp=(−0.97±0.16)+ i (0.07±0.15) fm and rωp=(+2.78±0.61)+ i (−0.01±0.48) fm, which suggests a repulsive force. Abstract

Coherent double neutral-pion photoproduction on the deuteron, $��{d}${$\to$}$��^0��^0{d}$, has been experimentally studied at incident photon energies ranging from 0.75 to 1.15 GeV. The total cross section as a function of the $��{d}$ center-of-mass energy shows resonance-like behavior, which peaks at approximately 2.47 and 2.63 GeV. The measured angular distribution of deuteron emission is rather flat, which cannot be reproduced by the kinematics of quasi-free $��^0��^0$ production with deuteron coalescence. In $��^0d $ invariant-mass distributions, a clear peak is observed at $2.14{\pm}0.01$ GeV$/c^2$ with a width of $0.09{\pm}0.01$ GeV$/c^2$. The spin-parity of this state is restricted to $1^+$, $2^+$ or $3^-$ from the angular distributions of the two $��^0$s. The present work shows strong evidence for the existence of an isovector dibaryon resonance with a mass of 2.14 GeV$/c^2$. The $2^+$ assignment is consistent with the theoretically predicted ${\cal{D}}_{12}$ state, and also with the energy dependence of the $��{d}$ partial-wave amplitude $^3\!P_2$ for the $��^{\pm}d${$\to$}$��^{\pm}d$ and $��^+d${$\to$}${pp}$ reactions., 12 pages, 6 figures

Abstract

Molecular dynamics simulations of a nanoscale liquid droplet on a solid surface are carried out in order to examine the pressure tensor field around the multiphase interfaces, and to explore the validity of Young's equation. By applying the virial theorem to a hemicylindrical droplet consisting of argon molecules on a solid surface, two-dimensional distribution of the pressure tensor is obtained. Tensile principal pressure tangential to the interface is observed around the liquid-vapor transition layer, while both tensile and compressive principal pressure tangential to the interface exists around the solid-liquid transition layer due to the inhomogeneous density distribution. The two features intermix inside the overlap region between the transition layers at the contact line. The contact angle is evaluated by using a contour line of the maximum principal pressure difference. The interfacial tensions are calculated by using Bakker's equation and Young-Laplace equation to the pressure tensor distribution. The relation between measured contact angle and calculated interfacial tensions turns out to be consistent with Young's equation, which is known as the description of the force balance at the three-phase interface. Abstract

Molecular dynamics simulations of single water, water-methanol, or water-IPA (isopropyl-alcohol) mixture droplets on a solid surface were performed with various mixture ratios. An increase in alcohol fraction generally gave an increase in droplet wettability. Both methanol and IPA molecules showed a strong preference to gather at various interfaces, with methanol molecules also showing a tendency to diffuse into the droplet bulk. Specific interfacial tensions were investigated using quasi-one-dimensional simulation systems, and liquid-vapor and solid-liquid interfacial tensions were found to decrease greatly due to the presence of interfacial alcohol, while solid-vapor interfacial tensions were proved to have little influence on wettability. Young's relation was found to hold quantitatively well for both water-methanol and water-IPA droplets. The validity of using Bakker's equation on solid-liquid interfaces was also investigated, and it was shown that for tightly spaced crystal surfaces, the introduced uncertainly is small. Abstract

Two physics programs, determination of low-energy scattering parameters between the eta meson (η) and nucleon (N), and search for a possible bound state between the eta prime meson (η') and deuteron, using η photo-production from the deuteron target are conducted at the Research Center for Electron Photon Science (ELPH), Tohoku University. Among the twobody dynamics of the meson-nucleon systems, the ηN interaction is not well-known although it has been found attractive. An experiment is carried out to determine the low-energy ηN scattering parameters using a special kinematics. The energy and momentum of the emitted proton (p) are measured at 0 degrees for η photoproduction on the deuteron (d) at incident energies around 0.94 GeV, which gives the low relative momentum between η and neutron (n) in the final state. Low-energy ηn scattering is likely to take place in this condition, and the scattering parameters can be determined from the differential cross section as a function of the ηn invariant mass. The measurement is currently in progress to determine the real part of the ηn scattering length. A possible η'd bound state is theoretically predicted, and a structure corresponding to the state can be observed via the γd → ηd reaction at incident energies around 1.2 GeV. In the case of backward η emission, the structure becomes prominent because a background contribution coming from quasi-free single-step η emission is highly suppressed. The γd → ηd reaction has been also studied at ELPH below the incident energy of 1.15 GeV. The angular differential cross sections are determined at backward η emission angles. The tail of the corresponding peak is not observed, and the background level is much higher than predicted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Molecular dynamics simulations of single water droplets on a solid surface were carried out in order to investigate the effects that the Coulomb interaction between liquid and solid molecules has on wetting behavior by appending vertical electric polarization on a solid surface. The water droplet became more wettable both on upward and downward polarized surfaces, although structures of the adsorption layer appearing near the solid surface were clearly different, and the relation between droplet contact angle and surface polarization was also different for upward and downward polarization directions. The probability density distribution of molecular orientation around the adsorption layer indicated that preferable water molecule orientations varied largely by the surface polarization, and the rotational mobility around the preferable orientations was also affected. The dynamic property due to this rotational mobility was clearly captured by means of distribution of rotational diffusion coefficient, which potentially corresponded to local viscosity distribution. Abstract

The $��$-$��(1520)$ interference effect in the $��p\to K^+K^-p$ reaction has been measured for the first time in the energy range from 1.673 to 2.173 GeV. The relative phases between $��$ and $��(1520)$ production amplitudes were obtained in the kinematic region where the two resonances overlap. The measurement results support strong constructive interference when $K^+K^-$ pairs are observed at forward angles, but destructive interference for proton emission at forward angles. Furthermore, the observed interference effect does not account for the $\sqrt{s}=2.1$ GeV bump structure in forward differential cross sections for $��$ photoproduction. This fact suggests possible exotic structures such as a hidden-strangeness pentaquark state, a new Pomeron exchange and rescattering processes via other hyperon states.

Abstract

A glial reaction associated with up-regulation of inflammatory molecules has been suggested to play an important role in dopaminergic neuron loss in Parkinson's disease (PD). Among inflammatory molecules, inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) and cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2) have been focused upon as key factors in the pathogenesis. However, the mechanism of how these molecules are induced in PD brains is not clearly understood. We focused on CD40, which is expressed on neural cells and could be implicated in the neuroinflammation by inducing inflammatory molecules. We showed that both iNOS and COX-2 were up-regulated in microglia and astrocytes by CD40 stimulation in association with a low dose of interferon-γ (IFN-γ) in vitro. Selective loss of dopaminergic neurons was induced by costimulation with CD40 and IFN-γ in mesencephalic cultures, which was protected by selective inhibitors of iNOS and/or COX-2. We also found in CD40-stimulated astrocytes an increase of a low-affinity IgE receptor CD23, which is known to induce iNOS expression. Together these data suggest that up-regulated iNOS and COX-2 via the CD40 pathway may lead to dopaminergic neuron loss and may participate in the neuroinflammaory pathway of PD. © 2005 Wiley-Liss, Inc.

Abstract

An experiment for photoproduction of 2π^0 and other neutral mesons has been performed at the SPring-8/LEPS beam line. A forward gamma detector (FG) newly constructed has been used in combination with the backward gamma detector (BG). The energy calibration of the forward gamma detector has been made by an iteration method applied for 2γ forming π^0. The obtained π^0 mass resolution is 4.9% for now. The invariant mass distributions for 2 and 3 gamma event data are also shown for preliminary results.

Abstract

A search for $K^-pp$ bound state (the lightest kaonic nucleus) has been performed using the $��d \rightarrow K^+ ��^- \rm{X}$ reaction at E$_��$=1.5-2.4 GeV at LEPS/SPring-8. The differential cross section of $K^+ ��^-$ photo-production off deuterium has been measured for the first time in this energy region, and a bump structure was searched for in the inclusive missing mass spectrum. A statistically significant bump structure was not observed in the region from 2.22 to 2.36 GeV/$c^2$, and the upper limits of the differential cross section for the $K^-pp$ bound state production were determined to be 0.1$-$0.7 $��$ b (95$%$ confidence level) for a set of assumed binding energy and width values.
