We describe a photometric system designed for detection of WR stars in the near infrared region and based on a combination of narrow band filters and a CCD detector. The system is sensitive to Of and faint lined WN and WC stars and suitable for obscured regions of star formation in our Galaxy.

Different kinds of constitutive heterochromatin variation were observed in 72 specimens of Cebus apella, belonging to five distinct subspecies, captured in four geographic regions of South America. One particular chromosome type, affecting pair 19, was found to be exclusive of one subspecies (Cebus apella paraguayanus) and to have a distribution significantly different from that expected at equilibrium. Conversely, some other chromosome polymorphisms were more widespread, with distributions compatible with equilibrium. Other variant types, probably resulting from paracentric inversions involving both heterochromatin and euchromatin, were rarer and restricted to single specimens. Finally, a distinctive chromosome type 11 was found to be exclusive of one subspecies (Cebus apella xanthosternos), where it appeared as a fixed trait.

Experiments were carried out in order to analyse the wall-to-bed and fluid-to-particle heat transfer coefficients in spouted Beds. wall-to-bed heat transfer coefficients were determined in cylindrical-conical and conical spouted beds for various gas flow rates, particle sizes and bed heights for spouted beds with and without draft tubes.A new definition for wall-to-bed transfer coefficient was proposed baaed on experimental observations.The heat tranefer area was also studied to ensure that a physically significant fluid-to-particle heat transfer coefficient was achieved.

Vaccination with live Leishmania major has been shown to yield effective immunization in humans; however, this has been discontinued because of problems associated with virulence of the available vaccine lines. To circumvent this, we tested the ability of a dhfr-ts- null mutant of L. major, obtained by gene targeting, to infect and then to vaccinate mice against challenge with virulent L. major. Survival and replication of dhfr-ts- in macrophages in vitro were dependent upon thymidine, with parasites differentiating into amastigotes prior to destruction. dhfr-ts- parasites persisted in BALB/c mice for up to 2 months, declining with a half-life of 2-3 days. Nonetheless, dhfr-ts- was incapable of causing disease in both susceptible and immunodeficient (nu/nu) BALB/c mice. Animal infectivity could be partially restored by thymidine supplementation. When inoculated by the i.v., s.c., or i.m. routes into mice, dhfr-ts- could elicit substantial resistance to a subsequent challenge with virulent L. major. Thus, Leishmania bearing auxotrophic gene knockouts can be safe and induce protective immunity. Potentially, dhfr-ts- could be used as a platform for delivery of immunogens relevant to other diseases.

Quinacrine- and Giemsa-banding studies of the chromosomes of Cebus apella permitted to establish a pattern for the species and revealed an extreme chromosome unstability in the specimens studied. The male showed a pericentric inversion in one of its chromosomes, while the female turned out to have four different cell lines, with multiple structural changes involving several pericentric inversions and one deletion. Comparison with previously reported results indicates the existence of a marked intra- and interspecific chromosome variability.

There exists a wide range of opinion as to the place of the nurse in the management of psychiatric inpatients. Some writers1 have expressed the opinion that the nurse should maintain a "professional distance" so as not to interfere with the doctor's psychotherapeutic management of the patient. A number of other articles have stressed acceptance but objective uninvolvement as the attitude of choice for psychiatric nurses2 toward their patients. The following constitutes an example of another possibility for selected clinical cases in which the nurse plays a more important role in the management of psychiatric cases. PREVIOUS REPORTS From the beginning of the use of intensive psychotherapy for schizophrenia, nurses have been used as ancillary therapists. Federn,3 one of the pioneers of psychotherapy for psychotic patients, kept a "helper" with the patient in between sessions. Schwing,4 a nurse who

Greenhouse studies indicated many soils of the central plateau of Brazil to have a poor S supply. The most acute deficiency was found on soil from an upland savanna, but surface soils (0 to 20 cm. A0excluded) from virgin forests also responded. The B horizon of cultivated soils responded less frequently than that of the virgin soils, suggesting some downward movement of S under cropping. Such movement was also indicated by higher levels of NH4OAc‐extractable S. Sulfur extracted in this way correlated well with growth responses of millet grown in pot culture. In most soils, the addition of 20 pounds S as CaSO4per 2 million pounds of soil resulted in maximum dry matter production under the intensive cropping existing in these experiments. It is postulated that responses to S in this region will not be common unless N and P levels are improved. If these elements are plentifully supplied, however, and cropping is intensive, S deficiencies may occur on many soils.

The effective electron-ion interaction is obtained by use of a canonical transformation followed by standard linearization of the equations. The results justify the works of Kleinman and Langreth. Centroiding is investigated as a simple and computationally fast technique of object reconstruction, at low light level, from randomly translating images. A relationship between the spectrum of the average N-photon centroided frame and the object spectrum is presented as well as an algorithm for retrieving the phase in the case of one-dimensional objects. Computer-simulated data are used to test the relationship and the reconstruction algorithm.

Babassu (Orbignya phalerataMart.) and Buriti (Mauritia flexuosaMart.) are palm trees abundant in the northeast and north of Brazil, in the transition between Amazon rain forest and Cerrado biomes. The oil extracted from their fruits is locally available and therefore can be an alternative lipid source to increase energy density of growing lambs' diets. Twenty-one lambs (18.9 ± 3.8 kg initial BW and 120 d old) were used in a complete randomized block design to determine the effects of adding babassu oil or buriti oil on apparent digestibility and growth performance. Lambs were individually penned during 50 d and fed 1 of 3 diets: a control diet containing 70% concentrate and 30% Tifton 85 hay (CONT), the CONT plus 40 g/kg of babassu oil (BAO), and the CONT plus 40 g/kg of buriti oil (BUO). At the end of performance monitoring period, the intake was recorded and total feces collected for 4 d. Data were analyzed by 1-way ANOVA and when a significant diet effect (P< 0.05) was found, means were compared using Tukey's method. No significant differences were detected for DM (840 ± 176 g/d), CP (155 ± 38 g/d), NDF (290 ± 74 g/d), and ME (2.3 ± 0.5 Mcal/d) intake. Also, no significant differences were observed for DM (74.74 ± 5.0%), CP (75.9 ± 6.3%), and NDF (60.2 ± 7.8%) digestibility. The ether extract (EE) intake was higher (P< 0.05) with BUO (60.5 g/d) than with BAO (47.8 g/d) and both BUO and BAO were higher (P< 0.05) than CONT (23.3 g/d). However, the apparent digestibility of EE was higher (P< 0.05) with BAO (79.5%) than with BUO (68.7%) and both BAO and BUO were higher (P< 0.05) than CONT (55.4%).The ADG did not differ (P> 0.05) and averaged 187 ± 51 g/d across treatments. Moreover, the G:F did not differ (P> 0.05) and averaged 0.22 ± 0.09 across treatments. In conclusion, the addition of babassu oil or buriti oil did not affect the growth performance or nutrient apparent digestibility, except for EE.
