Issues concerning the Japanese novelist Natsume Soseki, who died in 1916, are examined, focusing on why an author so revered in Japan is so obscure in the West. Topics include the manner in which Western economic forces have created a climate in which many cultural objects appeal to the lowest common denominator, difficulties in literary translation, Soseki's calm style, readers' need for familiarity with Japanese culture, and the irrational and incomprehensible aspects of Soseki's work.

Various ballet productions have attempted to reshape classic dances by changing traditional gender roles. 'Swan Lake' was performed without ballet toe shoes and with an all-male ensemble, although the Prince remains male and the Princess female, and released in edited version on television. An American professor visiting India observes that despite the exotic Western association with India, there are a lot of similarities between the US and India. The Western image of India is that of a country full of pearls, elephants and evokes memories of the Raj. Most visitors reach India with preconceived notions but some of these notions are disproved. One such image is of India being a country of beggars. India is very stratified society and has to deal with differences in religion, caste, language and wealth. The differences between the West and India are vanishing and the similarities that are growing are fearful.

The U.S. military-service academies--at West Point (Army), Annapolis (Navy), Colorado Springs (Air Force), and New London (Coast Guard)--are at the center of several debates, both military and civilian. The military is downsizing, and the federal budget is under scrutiny: Do the academies deserve to continue if they are not producing better officers than the cheaper routes of ROTC and Officer Candidate School? The academies are educational institutions, but, this author asks, do they actually educate, and furthermore, do they produce "leaders" as they claim to? The author contends that, although the academies attract a certain type of student: hard-charging, military-oriented, with expectations of both physical and mental challenges, they are squandering that rich resource. He offers seven suggestions that may improve the efficiency of the military academies.

Volker Schlondorff's film of Robert Musil's novel 'Young Torless,' while remaining true to the narrative, fails to effectively reproduce the novel's philosophical orientation. The novel's most important themes are developed in the thoughts of Torless, the protagonist, and are not vocalized. Schlondorff's efforts to translate this to film is reduced to mere storytelling, rather than the portrayal of a work of literature.

Health professions the world over value various competencies in their practitioners that are not easily captured by academic measures of performance. As a result, many programs have begun using multiple mini-interviews (MMIs) to facilitate the selection of candidates who are most likely to demonstrate and further develop such qualities. In this twelve-tips article, the authors offer evidence- and experience-based advice regarding how to construct an MMI that is fit for purpose. The tips are provided chronologically, offering guidance regarding how one might conceptualize their goals for creating an MMI, how to establish a database of stations that are context appropriate, and how to prepare both candidates and examiners for their task. While MMIs have been shown to have utility in many instances, the authors urge caution against over-generalization by stressing the importance of post-MMI considerations including data monitoring and integration between one's admissions philosophy and one's curricular efforts.
