While the physical dimensions of climate change are now routinely assessed through multimodel intercomparisons, projected impacts on the global ocean ecosystem generally rely on individual models with a specific set of assumptions. To address these single-model limitations, we present standardized ensemble projections from six global marine ecosystem models forced with two Earth system models and four emission scenarios with and without fishing. We derive average biomass trends and associated uncertainties across the marine food web. Without fishing, mean global animal biomass decreased by 5% (±4% SD) under low emissions and 17% (±11% SD) under high emissions by 2100, with an average 5% decline for every 1 °C of warming. Projected biomass declines were primarily driven by increasing temperature and decreasing primary production, and were more pronounced at higher trophic levels, a process known as trophic amplification. Fishing did not substantially alter the effects of climate change. Considerable regional variation featured strong biomass increases at high latitudes and decreases at middle to low latitudes, with good model agreement on the direction of change but variable magnitude. Uncertainties due to variations in marine ecosystem and Earth system models were similar. Ensemble projections performed well compared with empirical data, emphasizing the benefits of multimodel inference to project future outcomes. Our results indicate that global ocean animal biomass consistently declines with climate change, and that these impacts are amplified at higher trophic levels. Next steps for model development include dynamic scenarios of fishing, cumulative human impacts, and the effects of management measures on future ocean biomass trends.

Although chromatin remodelers are among the most important risk genes associated with neurodevelopmental disorders (NDDs), the roles of these complexes during brain development are in many cases unclear. Here, we focused on the recently discovered ChAHP chromatin remodeling complex. The zinc finger and homeodomain transcription factor ADNP is a core subunit of this complex, and de novo ADNP mutations lead to intellectual disability and autism spectrum disorder. However, germline Adnp knockout mice were previously shown to exhibit early embryonic lethality, obscuring subsequent roles for the ChAHP complex in neurogenesis. To circumvent this early developmental arrest, we generated a conditional Adnp mutant allele. Using single-cell transcriptomics, cut&run-seq, and histological approaches, we show that during neocortical development, Adnp orchestrates the production of late-born, upper-layer neurons through a two-step process. First, Adnp is required to sustain progenitor proliferation specifically during the developmental window for upper-layer cortical neurogenesis. Accordingly, we found that Adnp recruits the ChAHP subunit Chd4 to genes associated with progenitor proliferation. Second, in postmitotic differentiated neurons, we define a network of risk genes linked to NDDs that are regulated by Adnp and Chd4. Taken together, these data demonstrate that ChAHP is critical for driving the expansion of upper-layer cortical neurons and for regulating neuronal gene expression programs, suggesting that these processes may potentially contribute to NDD etiology. The Na, K–ATPase generates an asymmetric ion gradient that supports multiple cellular functions, including the control of cellular volume, neuronal excitability, secondary ionic transport, and the movement of molecules like amino acids and glucose. The intracellular and extracellular levels of Na+ and K+ ions are the classical local regulators of the enzyme's activity. Additionally, the regulation of Na, K–ATPase is a complex process that occurs at multiple levels, encompassing its total cellular content, subcellular distribution, and intrinsic activity. In this context, the enzyme serves as a regulatory target for hormones, either through direct actions or via signaling cascades triggered by hormone receptors. Notably, FXYDs small transmembrane proteins regulators of Na, K–ATPase serve as intermediaries linking hormonal signaling to enzymatic regulation at various levels. Specifically, members of the FXYD family, particularly FXYD1 and FXYD2, are that undergo phosphorylation by kinases activated through hormone receptor signaling, which subsequently influences their modulation of Na, K–ATPase activity. This review describes the effects of FXYD2, cardiotonic steroid signaling, and hormones such as angiotensin II, dopamine, insulin, and catecholamines on the regulation of Na, K–ATPase. Furthermore, this review highlights the implications of Na, K–ATPase in diseases such as hypertension, renal hypomagnesemia, and cancer. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTPs) encompass a range of processes from preliminary to advanced stages. Conventional treatments are increasingly inadequate for handling emergent pollutants, particularly organic compounds with carcinogenic potential that pose risks to aquifers. Recent advancements prioritize integrating Advanced Oxidation Processes (AOPs) and adsorbents with conventional methods to effectively retain organic pollutants and enhance mineralization. There is a growing preference for non-chemical or minimally chemical approaches. Innovations such as combining ozone and other biological processes with photo-sono-assisted methods, alongside integrating AOPs with adsorbents, are promising. These approaches leverage catalyst-assisted reactions to optimize oxidation efficiency. This review aims to provide a holistic perspective on WWTP processes, spanning wastewater intake to the production of potable water, highlighting key technologies, operational challenges, and future trends. The focus is on advancing sustainable practices and enhancing treatment efficacy to safeguard water quality and address evolving environmental concerns effectively. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Phytomonas is the only kinetoplastid that can parasitize plants, causing economically relevant issues. Phytomonas serpens share similarities with pathogenic trypanosomatids, including surface enzymes that are involved in adhesion to the salivary gland of their experimental host, the insect Oncopeltus fasciatus. Ectophosphatases are cell surface enzymes involved in host–parasite interactions that are widely distributed among microorganisms. This work aimed to perform the biochemical characterization of P. serpens ectophosphatase activity, investigating and discussing its possible physiological role. This activity presented an acidic profile, and its kinetic parameters Km and Vmax were calculated as 1.57 ± 0.08 mM p-NPP and 10.11 ± 0.14 nmol p-NP/(h × 108 flagellates), respectively. It was stimulated by cobalt, inhibited by zinc, and insensitive to EDTA, a divalent metal chelator. The inhibitor sodium orthovanadate was able to decrease P. serpens ectophosphatase activity and growth, suggesting its involvement in cell proliferation. Given that P. serpens can uptake inorganic phosphate (Pi) from the extracellular medium, it is likely that its ectophosphatase activity acts together with the transport systems in the Pi acquisition process. The elucidation of the molecular mechanisms involved in this process emerges as a relevant perspective, providing new strategies for controlling Phytomonas infection. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
