In this contribution, new data concerning the distribution of vascular flora alien to Italy are presented. It includes new records, confirmations, exclusions for Italy or for Italian administrative regions. Nomenclatural and distribution updates, published elsewhere, and corrections are provided as Suppl. material 1.

Aim: In countries where access to mammography equipment and skilled personnel is limited, most breast cancer (BC) cases are detected in locally advanced stages. Infrared breast thermography is recognized as an adjunctive technique for the detection of BC due to its advantages such as safety (by not emitting ionizing radiation nor applying any stress to the breast), portability, and low cost. Improved by advanced computational analytics techniques, infrared thermography could be a valuable complementary screening technique to detect BC at early stages. In this work, an infrared-artificial intelligence (AI) software was developed and evaluated to help physicians to identify potential BC cases. Methods: Several AI algorithms were developed and evaluated, which were learned from a proprietary database of 2,700 patients, with BC cases that were confirmed through mammography, ultrasound, and biopsy. Following by evaluation of the algorithms, the best AI algorithm (infrared-AI software) was submitted to a clinic validation process in which its ability to detect BC was compared to mammography evaluations in a double-blind test. Results: The infrared-AI software demonstrated efficiency values of 94.87% sensitivity, 72.26% specificity, 30.08% positive predictive value (PPV), and 99.12% negative predictive value (NPV), whereas the reference mammography evaluation reached 100% sensitivity, 97.10% specificity, 81.25% PPV, and 100% NPV. Conclusions: The infrared-AI software here developed shows high BC sensitivity (94.87%) and high NPV (99.12%). Therefore, it is proposed as a complementary screening tool for BC.

Abstract Gaucher Disease (GD), the most common lysosomal disorder, arises from mutations in the GBA1 gene and is characterized by a wide spectrum of phenotypes, ranging from mild hematological and visceral involvement to severe neurological disease. Neuronopathic patients display dramatic neuronal loss and increased neuroinflammation, whose molecular basis are still unclear. Using a combination of Drosophila dGBA1b loss-of-function models and GD patient-derived iPSCs differentiated towards neuronal precursors and mature neurons we showed that different GD- tissues and neuronal cells display an impairment of growth mechanisms with an increased cell death and reduced proliferation. These phenotypes are coupled with the downregulation of several Hippo transcriptional targets, mainly involved in cells and tissue growth, and YAP exclusion from nuclei. Interestingly, Hippo knock-down in the GBA-KO flies rescues the proliferative defect, suggesting that targeting the Hippo pathway can be a promising therapeutic approach to neuronopathic GD.

Tumor-specific elucidation of physical and functional oncoprotein interactions could improve tumorigenic mechanism characterization and therapeutic response prediction. Current interaction models and pathways, however, lack context specificity and are not oncoprotein specific. We introduce SigMaps as context-specific networks, comprising modulators, effectors and cognate binding-partners of a specific oncoprotein. SigMaps are reconstructed de novo by integrating diverse evidence sources-including protein structure, gene expression and mutational profiles-via the OncoSig machine learning framework. We first generated a KRAS-specific SigMap for lung adenocarcinoma, which recapitulated published KRAS biology, identified novel synthetic lethal proteins that were experimentally validated in three-dimensional spheroid models and established uncharacterized crosstalk with RAB/RHO. To show that OncoSig is generalizable, we first inferred SigMaps for the ten most mutated human oncoproteins and then for the full repertoire of 715 proteins in the COSMIC Cancer Gene Census. Taken together, these SigMaps show that the cell's regulatory and signaling architecture is highly tissue specific.

Microbially influenced corrosion (MIC) is a potentially critical degradation mechanism for a wide range of materials exposed to environments that contain relevant microorganisms. The likelihood and rate of MIC are affected by microbiological, chemical, and metallurgical factors; hence, the understanding of the mechanisms involved, verification of the presence of MIC, and the development of mitigation methods require a multidisciplinary approach. Much of the recent focus in MIC research has been on the microbiological and chemical aspects, with less attention given to metallurgical attributes. Here, we address this knowledge gap by providing a critical synthesis of the literature on the metallurgical aspects of MIC of carbon steel, a material frequently associated with MIC failures and widely used in construction and infrastructure globally. The article begins by introducing the process of MIC, then progresses to explore the complexities of various metallurgical factors relevant to MIC in carbon steel. These factors include chemical composition, grain size, grain boundaries, microstructural phases, inclusions, and welds, highlighting their potential influence on MIC processes. This review systematically presents key discoveries, trends, and the limitations of prior research, offering some novel insights into the impact of metallurgical factors on MIC, particularly for the benefit of those already familiar with other aspects of MIC. The article concludes with recommendations for documenting metallurgical data in MIC research. An appreciation of relevant metallurgical attributes is essential for a critical assessment of a material’s vulnerability to MIC to advance research practices and to broaden the collective knowledge in this rapidly evolving area of study.

Este trabajo analiza el modo en que el poder político bonaerense abordó los problemas de gobierno relativos a la seguridad pública durante las dos primeras décadas desde el retorno de la democracia. Se busca determinar la importancia relativa que la seguridad tuvo como objeto de atención de la más alta autoridad política del distrito, en un periodo largo que abarca casi dos décadas, e inventariar los contenidos asociados a la cuestión securitaria, tanto en términos de diagnósticos y medidas propuestas, como de consideraciones políticas e ideológicas más generales. Para ello, se analizan sistemáticamente los mensajes de los gobernadores en ocasión de la apertura de sesiones legislativas entre 1983 y 1999. Este recorte ofrece un material significativo para abordar el objeto de interés de esta investigación. En el desarrollo del análisis, se observa que cuestiones como el delito y la policía son los principales elementos considerados en los discursos institucionales, y que unos y otros son trabajados con distinto nivel de detalle, y con variados enfoques, en los distintos momentos del período analizado. Se sitúan los posicionamientos analizados en el marco del contexto político y social más general, y en cada una de las sucesivas gestiones de gobierno que ocupan el timón del Estado provincial. Se pretende contribuir así a una comprensión general del lugar de la seguridad, y las políticas de seguridad, en la política bonaerense contemporánea.

IntroductionThe collapse of macroalgal habitats is altering the structure of benthic communities on rocky shores globally. Nonetheless, how the loss of canopy-forming macroalgae influences the structure of epilithic microbial communities is yet to be explored. MethodsHere, we used experimental field manipulations and 16S-rRNA-gene amplicon sequencing to determine the effects of macroalgal loss on the understory bacterial communities and their relationship with epiphytic bacteria on macroalgae. Beds of the fucoid Hormosira banksii were exposed to different levels of disturbance resulting in five treatments: (i) 100% removal of Hormosira individuals, (ii) 50% removal, (iii) no removal, (iv) a procedural control that mimicked the removal process, but no Hormosira was removed and (v) adjacent bare rock. Canopy cover, bacterial communities (epilithic and epiphytic) and benthic macroorganisms were monitored for 16 months.ResultsResults showed that reductions in canopy cover rapidly altered understory bacterial diversity and composition. Hormosira canopies in 50% and 100% removal plots showed signs of recovery over time, but understory epilithic bacterial communities remained distinct throughout the experiment in plots that experienced full Hormosira removal. Changes in bacterial communities were not related to changes in other benthic macroorganisms.DiscussionThese results demonstrate that understory epilithic bacterial communities respond rapidly to environmental disturbances at small scales and these changes can be long-lasting. A deeper knowledge of the ecological role of understory epilithic microbial communities is needed to better understand potential cascading effects of disturbances on the functioning of macroalgal-dominated systems.

How the microstructure of steel affects a material’s response to microbially influenced corrosion (MIC) in marine applications remains largely unclear, partly because of the challenge in mapping local structure–property relationships. Focusing on sulphate-reducing bacteria, the onset and rate of MIC on low-carbon marine steel samples were analysed with a wide range of grain size and as a function of the local surface crystallography using a combination of optical and electron microscopy, mass loss measurements, and electrochemical testing. It is shown that the alloy’s resistance to MIC decreases with increasing in grain size. A significant effect of the local crystallographic orientation on the material’s dissolution rate is also recorded, which is lowest along the 〈100〉 crystallographic orientation in this steel when exposed to artificial seawater. These findings outline a clear relationship between the microstructure and the susceptibility to MIC in marine steel, which may be used to design alloys with enhanced resistance to MIC in marine applications.

Background: Left atrial volume (LAV) has prognostic value. Guidelines propose indexation to body surface area (BSA), however studies demonstrate this can overcorrect for body size. Limited studies investigate indexation across different ethnicities. We sought to evaluate the effect of ethnicity on indexation. Methods: Using data from the World Alliance of Societies of Echocardiography (WASE) cohort, healthy subjects were classified by race as White, Black, Asian, or Other. Biplane LAV was indexed to traditional isometric measurements (BSA, height, weight, ideal body weight (IBW) and IBW derived BSA (IBSA)), as well as previously-derived allometric height exponents (2.7 and 1.72). Additionally, an allometric height exponent for our cohort was derived (linear regression of the logarithmic transformation of LAV = a(height)b) as 1.87. All indices were then assessed using Spearman correlation, with a good index retaining correlation of LAV/index to raw LAV (r∼1), while avoiding overcorrection by the index (r∼0). Results: There were 1366 subjects (White: 524, Black: 149, Asian: 523, Other: 170; median age 44 years, 653 females (47.8%)). Opus Dei began its apostolic activities in the United States in 1949 but in November 1957 a new chapter in the history of Opus Dei in the United States commenced with the establishment of two distinct circumscriptions: the Chicago region and the Washington region. This article covers the early years of the Chicago region, from the point of view of the male members of Opus Dei, from 1957 to 1961. The timeline, geography, demographics and some institutional dimensions are presented. Special attention is given to the relationship with the American hierarchy. During these four years, Opus Dei grew from approximately sixty-five members in 1957 to two hundred in 1961, in the Chicago region alone. The article also discusses the establishment of two new centers, one in Gary, In. and the other, alongside the University of Notre Dame, which were added to those already existing in Chicago, Madison, Milwaukee and St. Louis. And finally, the article outlines the first steps that would lead to the launch of the Shellbourne Conference Center in 1962.
