Abstract

Background: Mental disorders influence people with a high prevalence and exert remarkable burden on community members. This study was carried out aiming to assess mental health status within the age range category of 15 and above in the Islamic Republic of Iran. Methods: The statistical population of this cross-sectional survey consisted of residents of urban and rural areas in Iranian provinces. An estimated sample size of 36000 people was chosen using systematic random sampling and the cluster method. Access was provided by the contribution of the Geographical Post Office for each province. The GHQ-28 was used as a screening tool for mental disorders. Data analysis was carried out using SPSS-18 software. Results: The results were gathered by the traditional scoring method. A total of 23.44% of samples were suspected of having mental disorders. The prevalence of suspicion for mental disorders was higher in urban (24.55%) than rural areas (20.89%). The prevalence of anxiety and somatization symptoms was higher than social dysfunction and depression symptoms. The outcomes also revealed that the prevalence of suspicion for mental disorders increased noticeably with aging. Suspicion for these disorders was more common in women, divorcees and widows, illiterates, less educated, unemployed and disabled individuals compared with other potential groups of the society. Conclusion: Comparison of the outcomes from this study with the research conducted in 1999, demonstrated an increasing prevalence rate of suspicion for mental disorders. Therefore, it is mandatory for Iranian public authorities to take the needed steps to ensure that necessary requirements encompassing prevention and promotion of mental health are implemented. International Conference on Heart Health in Developing Countries, 10-14 October 1999, New Delhi, India, by: All India Institute of Medical Sciences, Poster presentation, P:51 Abstract: Objective: This is an experimental study carried out in 1998 to evaluate the correlation between health education and the level of human serum lipids in hyperlipidic patients. Method: This study enroll 102 hyperlipidic individual (age group 28-77 years old, mean of cholesterol level= 263.3 mg/dl, Mean of the TG=376.05 mg/dl and mean of LDL=191.4 mg/dl) referred by Esfahan (Iran) GPs were selected as sample populations using random sampling method. The sample population was randomly divided into two groups of treatment (59 case and 43 control). Data was selected using a questionnaire and measuring the level of TG. Chol, LDL, HDL and weight indexes and BMI of the subjects.Attitude and practice were measured after collecting the questionnaire and measuring above parameters of both the treatment and control group, next the health education program was carried out for treatment group. Three months later the same procedures of data collection was carried out for both groups. Result: Our result indicated a positive effect of health education on the decreased of the following factors in the treatment group. After three months the levels of Chol, LDL, Weight Index and MBI were decreased significantly (p=0.000) using student t test. But there was no significant changes on the level of HDL (P=0.22). There was no significant changes on the levels of TG (P=0.58). Conclusion: Our study shows a strong correlation between the health education and treatment and control of hyperlipidemic patients and other risk factors of coronary heart disease.

Abstract

Background: In order to select a better antibiotic choice for treatment of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections, this study was conducted to determine the frequency of resistance to some antipseudomonal β-lactams in P. aeruginosa isolates from patients in Tehran, Iran. In addition, the relation between presence of genes known to be responsible for resistance to β-lactams (ampC, mexC1,2, and mexC3,4 genes) and resistance phenotype among P. aeroginosa isolates was evaluated. Methods: P. aeruginosa strains were isolated and identified by routine methods and PCR for oprL gene. Disk diffusion method was employed to determine the antimicrobial susceptibility pattern according to CLSI recommendations. PCR was used to detect the resistance genes. Results: Among 100 isolates of P. aeruginosa, 82% had ampC, 86% mexC1,2 and 89% mexC3,4 genes and combinations of these genes were seen in most of isolates and only 3% of isolates had none of these genes. Resistance to mezlocillin, cefepime, ceftazidime and piperacillin/ tazobactam was seen in 46%, 41%, 36% and 29% of isolates, respectively. Significant relation (P value =0.05 by Chi-square or Fisher Exact test) was observed between the presence of ampC gene and resistance to all the studied β-lactams in this study. No relation was observed for mexC genes, although many of isolates containing these two genes were phenotypically resistant. Discussion: This study had shown for the first time, the presence of ampC and mexC genes in significant percent of clinical isolates of P. aeruginosa in Tehran, Iran, and relation between presence of ampC gene and resistance to β-lactams. Abstract

Background. We aimed to investigate the relationship between cervical length at 37 weeks of pregnancy and the onset of spontaneous labour as well as mode of delivery. Methods. We did a prospective observational study of 126 low-risk pregnant women with cephalic presentation who were not in labour, attending a south Tehran health centre for prenatal care. The length of the cervix was measured using transvaginal ultrasound (10 MHz endovaginal transducer) by a single sonographer at 37 weeks of gestation. The outcomes were the onset of spontaneous labour and the mode of delivery. Results. The mean cervical length was 26.1 mm (range 10-51 mm), with a non-significant difference between nulliparous and parous women (p=0.36). There was a significant association between cervical length and onset of spontaneous labour (r=0.33, p<0.001). When controlled for parity, maternal height and onset of spontaneous labour, cervical length did not predict the mode of delivery (p=0.79). Conclusion. Measurement of cervical length at 37 weeks could predict the onset of spontaneous labour, but it failed to predict the mode of delivery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
