Abstract

Forward-backward multiplicity correlations in σ+,K+p andpp collisions at 250 GeV/c (\(\sqrt s \)=22 GeV) are given for all charges and for the different charge combinations. The correlations are found to be caused predominantly by centrally produced particles. It is demonstrated that this result is an agreement with observations at the ISR and the CERNp\(\bar p\)-Collider. The results are compared to expectations from LUND, DPM and FRITIOF Monte Carlo models and a geometrical picture relating correlations in hadron-hadron collisions toe+e− data in terms of impact parameters is tested.

Abstract

A search for the neutral Higgs boson, using the processes Z 0 → H 0 e + e − , Z 0 → H 0 μ + μ − , Z 0 → H 0 τ + τ − , Z 0 → H 0 v v and Z 0 → H 0 q q , is performed on data collected by the ALEPH detector corresponding to about 11 550 events of Z0 → hadrons. Combining all these processes, the mass range excluded is 32 MeV−15 GeV at 95% CL and 40 MeV−12 GeV at 99% CL. The result from this experiment is unambiguous in the context of the standard model.

Abstract

Preliminary large transverse energy cross sections of 150, 300 GeV pions and protons on hydrogen measured with a large acceptance, segmented calorimeter are presented. Processes other than the scattering of two constituents appear to dominate this deep inelastic hadron scattering process.

Abstract

The structure of hadronic events fromZ 0 decay is studied by measuring event shape variables, factorial moments, and the energy flow distribution. The distributions, after correction for detector effects and initial and final state radiation, are compared with the predictions of different QCD Monte Carlo programs with optimized parameter values. These Monte Carlo programs use either the second order matrix element or the parton shower evolution for the perturbative QCD calculations and use the string, the cluster, or the independent fragmentation model for hadronization. Both parton shower andO(α 2 s matrix element based models with string fragmentation describe the data well. The predictions of the model based on parton shower and cluster fragmentation are also in good agreement with the data. The model with independent fragmentation gives a poor description of the energy flow distribution. The predicted energy evolutions for the mean values of thrust, sphericity, aplanarity, and charge multiplicity are compared with the data measured at different center-of-mass energies. The parton shower based models with string or cluster fragmentation are found to describe the energy dependences well while the model based on theO(α 2 s calculation fails to reproduce the energy dependences of these mean values.

105. SARS-CoV-2 seroprevalence in healthcare workers of a teaching hospital in a highly endemic region in the Netherlands after the first wave: a cross-sectional study.

Abstract

Objective: To study the SARS-CoV-2 infection rate among hospital healthcare workers after the first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic, and provide more knowledge in the understanding of the relationship between infection, symptomatology and source of infection., Design: A cross-sectional study in healthcare workers., Setting: Northern Limburg, the Netherlands., Participants: All employees of VieCuri Medical Center (n=3300) were invited to enrol in current study. In total 2507 healthcare workers participated., Intervention: Between 22 June 2020 and 3 July 2020, participants provided venous blood samples voluntarily, which were tested for SARS-CoV-2 antibodies with the Wantai SARS-CoV-2 Ig total ELISA test. Work characteristics, exposure risks and prior symptoms consistent with COVID-19 were gathered through a survey., Main Outcome Measure: Proportion of healthcare workers with positive SARS-CoV-2 serology., Results: The overall seroprevalence was 21.1% (n=530/2507). Healthcare workers between 17 and 30 years were more likely to have SARS-CoV-2 antibodies compared with participants >30 years. The probability of having SARS-CoV-2 antibodies was comparable for healthcare workers with and without direct patient (OR 1.42, 95% CI 0.86 to 2.34) and COVID-19 patient contact (OR 1.62, 95% CI 0.80 to 3.33). On the contrary, exposure to COVID-19 positive coworkers (OR 1.83, 95% CI 1.15 to 2.93) and household members (OR 6.09, 95% CI 2.23 to 16.64) was associated with seropositivity. Of those healthcare workers with SARS-CoV-2 antibodies, 16% (n=85/530) had not experienced any prior COVID-19-related symptoms. Only fever and anosmia were associated with seropositivity (OR 1.90, 95% CI 1.42 to 2.55 and OR 10.51, 95% CI 7.86 to 14.07)., Conclusions: Healthcare workers caring for hospitalised COVID-19 patients were not at an increased risk of infection, most likely as a result of taking standard infection control measures into consideration. Abstract

The spread of infections in healthcare environments is a persistent and growing problem in most countries, aggravated by the development of microbial resistance to antibiotics and disinfectants. In addition to indwelling medical devices (e.g. implants, catheters), such infections may also result from adhesion of microbes either to external solid-water interfaces such as shower caps, taps, drains, etc., or to external solid-gas interfaces such as door handles, clothes, curtains, computer keyboards, etc. The latter are the main focus of the present work, where an overview of antimicrobial coatings for such applications is presented. This review addresses well-established and novel methodologies, including chemical and physical functional modification of surfaces to reduce microbial contamination, as well as the potential risks associated with the implementation of such anticontamination measures. Different chemistry-based approaches are discussed, for instance anti-adhesive surfaces (e.g. superhydrophobic, zwitterions), contact-killing surfaces (e.g. polymer brushes, phages), and biocide-releasing surfaces (e.g. triggered release, quorum sensing-based systems). The review also assesses the impact of topographical modifications at distinct dimensions (micrometre and nanometre orders of magnitude) and the importance of applying safe-by-design criteria (e.g. toxicity, contribution for unwanted acquisition of antimicrobial resistance, long-term stability) when developing and implementing antimicrobial surfaces., (Copyright © 2018 The Author(s). Abstract

Infections and infectious diseases are considered a major challenge to human health in healthcare units worldwide. This opinion paper was initiated by EU COST Action network AMiCI (AntiMicrobial Coating Innovations) and focuses on scientific information essential for weighing the risks and benefits of antimicrobial surfaces in healthcare settings. Particular attention is drawn on nanomaterial-based antimicrobial surfaces in frequently-touched areas in healthcare settings and the potential of these nano-enabled coatings to induce (eco)toxicological hazard and antimicrobial resistance. Possibilities to minimize those risks e.g., at the level of safe-by-design are demonstrated.

Abstract

Albuminuria and increased regional albumin clearance are known to develop concomitantly in diabetes. The anti-proteinuric effect of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor therapy is well established. We studied whether angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor therapy with perindoprilat in comparison with conventional antihypertensive treatment could influence the development of increased regional albumin clearance as well as albuminuria in experimental diabetes. Rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes were randomized into a saline group (n = 7), a perindoprilat (1 mg/kg per day) group (n = 8), and a hydralazine (3 mg/kg per day) group (n = 6); six rats served as non-diabetic controls. After 6-8 weeks, blood pressure was equally reduced in the perindoprilat- and hydralazine-treated groups (P < 0.01). Twenty-four-hour urinary protein and albumin excretion were increased in diabetic rats compared to control rats (P < 0.001). Hydralazine did not reduce 24 h protein or albumin excretion, whereas perindoprilat treatment reduced both (P < 0.001) to levels comparable to those of control rats. Regional albumin clearance, assessed in the eye, ileum, lung, skeletal muscle and skin, was clearly elevated in diabetic rats compared to control rats; however, neither drug therapy had an effect on albumin clearance.
