Using new, highly accurate photometric redshifts from the MUSYC medium-band survey in the Extended Chandra Deep Field-South (ECDF-S), we fit synthetic stellar population models to compare active galactic nucleus (AGN) host galaxies to inactive galaxies at 0.8 {

We use data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey and visual classifications of morphology from the Galaxy Zoo project to study black hole growth in the nearby Universe (z < 0.05) and to break down the AGN host galaxy population by color, stellar mass and morphology. We find that black hole growth at luminosities L_OIII >1E40 erg/s in early- and late-type galaxies is fundamentally different. AGN host galaxies as a population have a broad range of stellar masses (1E10-1E11 Msun), reside in the green valley of the color-mass diagram and their central black holes have median masses around 1E6.5 Msun. However, by comparing early- and late-type AGN host galaxies to their non-active counterparts, we find several key differences: in early-type galaxies, it is preferentially the galaxies with the least massive black holes that are growing, while late-type galaxies, it is preferentially the most massive}black holes that are growing. The duty cycle of AGN in early-type galaxies is strongly peaked in the green valley below the low-mass end (1E10 Msun) of the red sequence at stellar masses where there is a steady supply of blue cloud progenitors. The duty cycle of AGN in late-type galaxies on the other hand peaks in massive (1E11 Msun) green and red late-types which generally do not have a corresponding blue cloud population of similar mass. At high Eddington ratios (L/L_Edd > 0.1), the only population with a substantial fraction of AGN are the low-mass green valley early-type galaxies. Finally, the Milky Way likely resides in the "sweet spot" on the color-mass diagram where the AGN duty cycle of late-type galaxies is highest. We present a new K-selected, optical-to-near-infrared photometric catalog of the Extended Chandra Deep Field South (ECDFS), making it publicly available to the astronomical community. The dataset is founded on publicly available imaging, supplemented by original zJK imaging data obtained as part of the MUltiwavelength Survey by Yale-Chile (MUSYC). The final photometric catalog consists of photometry derived from nine band U-K imaging covering the full 0.5x0.5 sq. deg. of the ECDFS, plus H band data for approximately 80% of the field. The 5sigma flux limit for point-sources is K = 22.0 (AB). This is also the nominal completeness and reliability limit of the catalog: the empirical completeness for 21.75 < K < 22.00 is 85+%. We have verified the quality of the catalog through both internal consistency checks, and comparisons to other existing and publicly available catalogs. As well as the photometric catalog, we also present catalogs of photometric redshifts and restframe photometry derived from the ten band photometry. We have collected robust spectroscopic redshift determinations from published sources for 1966 galaxies in the catalog. Based on these sources, we have achieved a (1sigma) photometric redshift accuracy of Dz/(1+z) = 0.036, with an outlier fraction of 7.8%. Most of these outliers are X-ray sources. Finally, we describe and release a utility for interpolating restframe photometry from observed SEDs, dubbed InterRest. Particularly in concert with the wealth of already publicly available data in the ECDFS, this new MUSYC catalog provides an excellent resource for studying the changing properties of the massive galaxy population at z < 2. Recent work has suggested that the fraction of obscured AGN declines with increasing luminosity, but it has been difficult to quantify this trend. Here, we attempt to measure this fraction as a function of luminosity by studying the ratio of mid-infrared to intrinsic nuclear bolometric luminosity in unobscured AGN. Because the mid-infrared is created by dust reprocessing of shorter wavelength nuclear light, this ratio is a diagnostic of f_obsc, the fraction of solid angle around the nucleus covered by obscuring matter. In order to eliminate possible redshift-dependences while also achieving a large dynamic range in luminosity, we have collected archival 24 micron MIPS photometry from objects with z~1 in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) and the Cosmic Evolution Survey (COSMOS). To measure the bolometric luminosity for each object, we used archival optical data supplemented by GALEX data. We find that the mean ratio of 24 microns to bolometric luminosity decreases by a factor of ~3 in the L_bol=10^44-3x10^47 ergs s^-1 range, but there is also a large scatter at constant L_bol. Using radiation transfer solutions for model geometries, we show how the IR/bolometric ratio relates to f_obsc and compare these values with those obtained obtained from samples of X-ray selected AGN. Although we find approximate agreement, our method indicates somewhat higher values of f_obsc, particularly in the middle range of luminosities, suggesting that there may be a significant number of heavily obscured AGN missed by X-ray surveys., Comment: ApJ, in press. 10 pages in emulateapj style, 4 figures, 3 tables

We present the first clustering results of X-ray-selected active galactic nuclei (AGNs) at z ~ 3. Using Chandra X-ray imaging and UVR optical colors from MUSYC photometry in the Extended Chandra Deep Field-South field, we selected a sample of 58 z ~ 3 AGN candidates. From the optical data we also selected 1385 luminous blue galaxies (LBGs) at 2.8 < z < 3.8 with R < 25.5. We performed autocorrelation and cross-correlation analyses, and here we present results for the clustering amplitudes and dark matter (DM) halo masses of each sample. For the LBGs we find a correlation length of r0,LBG = 6.7 ± 0.5 Mpc, implying a bias value of 3.5 ± 0.3 and DM halo masses of log(Mmin/M☉) = 11.8 ± 0.1. The AGN-LBG cross-correlation yields r0,AGN-LBG = 8.7 ± 1.9 Mpc, implying for AGNs at 2.8 < z < 3.8 a bias value of 5.5 ± 2.0 and DM halo masses of log(Mmin/M☉) = 12.6+ 0.5−0.8. Evolution of DM halos in the ΛCDM cosmology implies that today these z ~ 3 AGNs are found in high-mass galaxies with a typical luminosity of .

We present new IRAM 30m spectroscopic observations of the $\sim88$ GHz band, including emission from the CCH (n=1-0) multiplet, HCN (1-0), HCO+ (1-0), and HNC (1-0), for a sample of 58 local luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies from the Great Observatories All-sky LIRG Survey (GOALS). By combining our new IRAM data with literature data and Spitzer/IRS spectroscopy, we study the correspondence between these putative tracers of dense gas and the relative contribution of active galactic nuclei (AGN) and star formation to the mid-infrared luminosity of each system. We find the HCN (1-0) emission to be enhanced in AGN-dominated systems ($\langle$L'$_{HCN (1-0)}$/L'$_{HCO^+ (1-0)}\rangle=1.84$), compared to composite and starburst-dominated systems ($\langle$L'$_{HCN (1-0)}$/L'$_{HCO^+ (1-0)}\rangle=1.14$, and 0.88, respectively). However, some composite and starburst systems have L'$_{HCN (1-0)}$/L'$_{HCO^+ (1-0)}$ ratios comparable to those of AGN, indicating that enhanced HCN emission is not uniquely associated with energetically dominant AGN. After removing AGN-dominated systems from the sample, we find a linear relationship (within the uncertainties) between $\log_{10}$(L'$_{HCN (1-0)}$) and $\log_{10}$(L$_{IR}$), consistent with most previous findings. L'$_{HCN (1-0)}$/L$_{IR}$, typically interpreted as the dense gas depletion time, appears to have no systematic trend with L$_{IR}$ for our sample of luminous and ultraluminous infrared galaxies, and has significant scatter. The galaxy-integrated HCN (1-0) and HCO+ (1-0) emission do not appear to have a simple interpretation, in terms of the AGN dominance or the star formation rate, and are likely determined by multiple processes, including density and radiative effects., Comment: fix presentation of numerical value of y-intercept in eqs 1-3 to match forthcoming ApJ erratum. figure 6 and the conclusions are unaffected

We present the first direct measurements of the rest-frame 10-40 keV X-ray luminosity function (XLF) of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs) based on a sample of 94 sources at 0.1 < z, Comment: 14 pages, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We present a NuSTAR, Chandra, and XMM--Newton survey of nine of the nearest ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs). The unprecedented sensitivity of NuSTAR at energies above 10 keV enables spectral modeling with far better precision than was previously possible. Six of the nine sources observed were detected sufficiently well by NuSTAR to model in detail their broadband X-ray spectra, and recover the levels of obscuration and intrinsic X-ray luminosities. Only one source (IRAS 13120--5453) has a spectrum consistent with a Compton--thick AGN, but we cannot rule out that a second source (Arp 220) harbors an extremely highly obscured AGN as well. Variability in column density (reduction by a factor of a few compared to older observations) is seen in IRAS 05189--2524 and Mrk 273, altering the classification of these border-line sources from Compton-thick to Compton-thin. The ULIRGs in our sample have surprisingly low observed fluxes in high energy (>10 keV) X-rays, especially compared to their bolometric luminosities. They have lower ratios of unabsorbed 2--10 keV to bolometric luminosity, and unabsorbed 2--10 keV to mid-IR [O IV] line luminosity than do Seyfert 1 galaxies. We identify IRAS 08572+3915 as another candidate intrinsically X-ray weak source, similar to Mrk 231. Dust-Obscured galaxies (DOGs) are bright 24 um-selected sources with extreme obscuration at optical wavelengths. They are typically characterized by a rising power-law continuum of hot dust (T_D ~ 200-1000K) in the near-IR indicating that their mid-IR luminosity is dominated by an an active galactic nucleus (AGN). DOGs with a fainter 24 um flux display a stellar bump in the near-IR and their mid-IR luminosity appears to be mainly powered by dusty star formation. Alternatively, it may be that the mid-IR emission arising from AGN activity is dominant but the torus is sufficiently opaque to make the near-IR emission from the AGN negligible with respect to the emission from the host component. In an effort to characterize the astrophysical nature of the processes responsible for the IR emission in DOGs, this paper exploits Herschel data (PACS + SPIRE) on a sample of 95 DOGs within the COSMOS field. We derive a wealth of far-IR properties (e.g., total IR luminosities; mid-to-far IR colors; dust temperatures and masses) based on SED fitting. Of particular interest are the 24 um-bright DOGs (F_24um > 1mJy). They present bluer far-IR/mid-IR colors than the rest of the sample, unveiling the potential presence of an AGN. The AGN contribution to the total 8-1000 um flux increases as a function of the rest-frame 8 um-luminosity irrespective of the redshift. This confirms that faint DOGs (L_8 um< 10^12 L_sun) are dominated by star-formation while brighter DOGs show a larger contribution from an AGN., Accepted for publication in MNRAS

The intrinsic column density (NH) distribution of quasars is poorly known. At the high obscuration end of the quasar population and for redshifts z 1.5e24 cm^-2) type 2 quasars (CTQSO2s); five new NuSTAR observations are reported herein, and four have been previously published. The candidate CTQSO2s lie at z~ 90 net source counts at 8-24 keV). For these NuSTAR-detected sources direct (i.e., X-ray spectral) constraints on the intrinsic AGN properties are feasible, and we measure column densities ~2.5-1600 times higher and intrinsic (unabsorbed) X-ray luminosities ~10-70 times higher than pre-NuSTAR constraints from Chandra and XMM-Newton. Assuming the NuSTAR-detected type 2 quasars are representative of other Compton-thick candidates, we make a correction to the NH distribution for optically selected type 2 quasars as measured by Chandra and XMM-Newton for 39 objects. With this approach, we predict a Compton-thick fraction of f_CT = 36^{+14}_{-12} %, although higher fractions (up to 76%) are possible if indirect absorption diagnostics are assumed to be reliable., Comment: 19 pages, 13 figures, 5 tables. We present new NuSTAR and Chandra observations of NGC 3393, a galaxy reported to host the smallest separation dual AGN resolved in the X-rays. While past results suggested a 150 pc separation dual AGN, three times deeper Chandra imaging, combined with adaptive optics and radio imaging suggest a single, heavily obscured, radio-bright AGN. Using VLA and VLBA data, we find an AGN with a two-sided jet rather than a dual AGN and that the hard X-ray, UV, optical, NIR, and radio emission are all from a single point source with a radius 0.2, but would detect an unobscured AGN of this luminosity out to high redshift (z=5)., Accepted for publication in ApJ. 15 Figures and 4 tables

We present initial results and the source catalog from the NuSTAR survey of the Extended Chandra Deep Field South (hereafter, ECDFS) - currently the deepest contiguous component of the NuSTAR extragalactic survey program. The survey covers the full ~30 arcmin x 30 arcmin area of this field to a maximum depth of ~360 ks (~220 ks when corrected for vignetting at 3-24 keV), reaching sensitivity limits of ~1.3 x 10^-14 erg/cm2/s (3-8 keV), ~3.4 x 10^-14 erg/cm2/s (8-24 keV) and ~3.0 x 10^-14 erg/cm2/s (3-24 keV). Fifty four (54) sources are detected over the full field, although five of these are found to lie below our significance threshold once contaminating flux from neighboring (i.e., blended) sources is taken into account. Of the remaining 49 that are significant, 19 are detected in the 8-24 keV band. The 8-24 keV to 3-8 keV band ratios of the twelve sources that are detected in both bands span the range 0.39-1.7, corresponding to a photon index range of Gamma ~ 0.5-2.3, with a median photon index of 1.70 +/- 0.52. The redshifts of the 49 sources in our main sample span the range z = 0.21-2.7, and their rest-frame 10-40 keV luminosities (derived from the observed 8-24 keV fluxes) span the range L(10-40 keV) ~ (0.7-300) x 10^43 erg/s, sampling below the "knee" of the X-ray luminosity function out to z ~ 0.8-1. Finally, we identify one NuSTAR source that has neither a Chandra nor an XMM-Newton counterpart, but that shows evidence of nuclear activity at infrared wavelengths, and thus may represent a genuine, new X-ray source detected by NuSTAR in the ECDFS., Comment: 20 pages, published in the Astrophysical Journal

To provide the census of the sources contributing to the X-ray background peak above 10 keV, NuSTAR is performing extragalactic surveys using a three-tier "wedding cake" approach. We present the NuSTAR survey of the COSMOS field, the medium sensitivity and medium area tier, covering 1.7 deg2 and overlapping with both Chandra and XMM-Newton data. This survey consists of 121 observations for a total exposure of ~3 Ms. To fully exploit these data, we developed a new detection strategy, carefully tested through extensive simulations. The survey sensitivity at 20% completeness is 5.9, 2.9 and 6.4 x 10^-14 erg/cm2/s in the 3-24 keV, 3-8 keV and 8-24 keV bands, respectively. By combining detections in 3 bands, we have a sample of 91 NuSTAR sources with 10^42 -10^45.5 erg/s luminosities and redshift z=0.04-2.5. Thirty two sources are detected in the 8-24 keV band with fluxes ~100 times fainter than sources detected by Swift-BAT. Of the 91 detections, all but four are associated with a Chandra and/or XMM-Newton point-like counterpart. One source is associated with an extended lower energy X-ray source. We present the X-ray (hardness ratio and luminosity) and optical-to-X-ray properties. The observed fraction of candidate Compton-thick AGN measured from the hardness ratio is between 13-20%. We discuss the spectral properties of NuSTAR J100259+0220.6 (ID 330) at z=0.044, with the highest hardness ratio in the entire sample. The measured column density exceeds 10^24 /cm2, implying the source is Compton-thick. We investigated AGN activity in low-mass galaxies, an important regime that can shed light onto BH formation and evolution, and their interaction with their host galaxies. We identified 336 AGN candidates from a parent sample of $\sim 48,000$ nearby low-mass galaxies ($M_{\rm \star} \leq 10^{9.5}M_\odot$, $z < 0.1$) in the SDSS. We selected the AGN using the classical BPT diagram, a similar optical emission line diagnostic based on the HeII$\lambda$4686 line, and mid-IR color cuts. Different criteria select host galaxies with different physical properties such as stellar mass and optical color, and only 3 out of 336 sources fulfill all three criteria. This could be in part due to selection biases. The resulting AGN fraction of $\sim 0.7 \%$ is at least one order of magnitude below the one estimated for more massive galaxies. At optical wavelengths, the HeII-based AGN selection appears to be more sensitive to AGN hosted in star-forming galaxies than the classical BPT diagram, at least in the low-mass regime. The archival X-ray and radio data available for some of the optically selected AGN candidates seem to confirm their AGN nature, but follow-up observations are needed to confirm the AGN nature of the rest of the sample, especially in the case of mid-IR selection. We investigate early black hole (BH) growth through the methodical search for $z\gtrsim5$ AGN in the $Chandra$ Deep Field South. We base our search on the $Chandra$ 4-Ms data with flux limits of $9.1\times\ 10^{-18}$ (soft, 0.5 - 2 keV) and $5.5\times\ 10^{-17}\ \mathrm{erg}\ \mathrm{s}^{-1}\ \mathrm{cm}^{-2}$ (hard, 2 - 8 keV). At $z\sim5$ this corresponds to luminosities as low as $\sim10^{42}$ ($\sim10^{43}$) $\mathrm{erg}\ \mathrm{s}^{-1}$ in the soft (hard) band and should allow us to detect Compton-thin AGN with $M_\mathrm{BH}>10^7 M_{\odot}$ and Eddington ratios > 0.1. Our field ($0.03~\mathrm{deg}^2$) contains over 600 $z\sim5$ Lyman Break Galaxies. Based on lower redshift relations we would expect $\sim20$ of them to host AGN. After combining the $Chandra$ data with GOODS/ACS, CANDELS/WFC3 and $Spitzer$/IRAC data, the sample consists of 58 high-redshift candidates. We run a photometric redshift code, stack the GOODS/ACS data, apply colour criteria and the Lyman Break Technique and use the X-ray Hardness Ratio. We combine our tests and using additional data find that all sources are most likely at low redshift. We also find five X-ray sources without a counterpart in the optical or infrared which might be spurious detections. We conclude that our field does not contain any convincing $z\gtrsim5$ AGN. Explanations for this result include a low BH occupation fraction, a low AGN fraction, short, super-Eddington growth modes, BH growth through BH-BH mergers or in optically faint galaxies. We investigate the relationship between X-ray and optical line emission in 340 nearby AGN selected above 10 keV using Swift BAT. We find a weak correlation between the extinction corrected [O III] and hard X-ray luminosity (14-195 keV) with a [OIII] large scatter (R_Pear = 0.64, sigma = 0.62 dex) and a similarly large scatter with the intrinsic 2-10 keV to [O III] luminosities (RPear=0.63, sigma = 0.63 dex). Correlations of the hard X-ray fluxes with the fluxes of high-ionization narrow lines ([O III], He II, [Ne III] and [Ne V]) are not significantly better than with the low ionization lines (Halpha, [SII]). Factors like obscuration or physical slit size are not found to be a significant part of the large scatter. In contrast, the optical emission lines show much better correlations with each other (sigma = 0.3 dex) than with the X-ray flux. The inherent large scatter questions the common usage of narrow emission lines as AGN bolometric luminosity indicators and suggests that other issues such as geometrical differences in the scattering of the ionized gas or long term AGN variability are important., Comment: About to be accepted in MNRAS upon minor grammar changes

We present the CXOCY J220132.8-320144 system, which is composed of an edge-on spiral galaxy at z=0.32 lensing a z=3.9 background quasar. Two images of the quasar are seen. The geometry of the system is favorable to separate the relative mass contribution of the disk and halo in the inner parts of the galaxy. We model the system with one elliptical mass component with the same ellipticity as the light distribution and manage to reproduce the quasar image positions and fluxes. We also model the system with two mass components, disk and halo. Again, we manage to reproduce the quasar image positions and fluxes. However, all models predict at least a third visible image close to the disk that is not seen in our images. We speculate that this is most likely due to extinction by the disk. We also measure the rotational velocity of the galaxy at 2.7 disk scale radius to be v_c=130 +/- 20 km/s from the [OII] emission lines. When adding the rotational velocity constraint to the models, we find that the contribution to the rotational velocity of the disk is likely to be equal to or larger than the contribution of the halo at this radius. The detection of the third image and a more accurate measurement of the rotational velocity would help to set tighter constraints on the mass distribution of this edge-on spiral galaxy.

In order to study the evolution of the relative fraction of obscured Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) we constructed the largest sample to date of AGN selected in hard X-rays. The full sample contains 2341 X-ray-selected AGN, roughly 4 times the largest previous samples studied in this connection. Of these, 1229 (53%) have optical counterparts for which redshifts are available; these span the redshift range $z$=0-4. The observed fraction of obscured AGN declines only slightly with redshift. Correcting for selection bias, we find that the intrinsic fraction of obscured AGN must actually increase with redshift, as (1+$z$)$^{\alpha}$, with $\alpha$$\simeq0.4\pm$0.1. This evolution is consistent with the integrated X-ray background, which provides the strongest constraints at relatively low redshift, $z\sim$1. Summing over all AGN, we estimate the bolometric AGN light to be 3.8 nW m$^{-2}$ sr$^{-1}$, or $\lesssim$8% of the total extragalactic light. Together with the observed black hole mass density in the local Universe, this implies an accretion efficiency of $\eta \sim$0.1-0.2, consistent with the values typically assumed.

We selected 40 candidate Lyα-emitting galaxies (LAEs) at z 3.1 with observed-frame equivalent widths greater than 150 A and inferred emission-line fluxes above 2.5 × 10-17 ergs cm-2 s-1 from deep narrowband and broadband MUSYC images of the Extended Chandra Deep Field South. Covering 992 arcmin2, this is the largest blank field surveyed for LAEs at z ~ 3, allowing an improved estimate of the space density of this population of (3 ± 1) × 10-4 h Mpc-3. Spectroscopic follow-up of 23 candidates yielded 18 redshifts, all at z 3.1. Over 80% of the LAEs are dimmer in continuum magnitude than the typical Lyman break galaxy (LBG) spectroscopic limit of R = 25.5 (AB), with a median continuum magnitude R 27 and very blue continuum colors, V-z 0. Over 80% of the LAEs have the right UVR colors to be selected as LBGs, but only 10% also have R ≤ 25.5. Stacking the UBVRIzJK fluxes reveals that LAEs have stellar masses 5 × 108 h M☉ and minimal dust extinction, AV 0.1. Inferred star formation rates are 6 h M☉ yr-1, yielding a cosmic star formation rate density of 2 × 10-3 h70 M☉ yr-1 Mpc-3. None of our LAE candidates show evidence for rest-frame emission-line equivalent widths EWrest > 240 A that might imply a nonstandard initial mass function. One candidate is detected by Chandra, implying an AGN fraction of 2% ± 2% for LAE candidate samples. In summary, LAEs at z ~ 3 have rapid star formation, low stellar mass, little dust obscuration, and no evidence for a substantial AGN component.

We present mid-infrared observations of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) in the GOODS fields, performed with the Spitzer Space Telescope. These are the deepest infrared and X-ray fields to date and cover a total area of ~0.1 deg2. AGNs are selected on the basis of their hard (2-8 keV) X-ray emission. The median AGN infrared luminosity is at least 10 times larger than the median for normal galaxies with the same redshift distribution, suggesting that the infrared emission is dominated by the central nucleus. The X-ray-to-infrared luminosity ratios of GOODS AGNs, most of which are at 0.5 z 1.5, are similar to the values obtained for AGNs in the local universe. The observed infrared flux distribution has an integral slope of ~1.5, and there are 1000 sources per square degree brighter than ~50 ?Jy at ~3-6 ?m. The counts approximately match the predictions of models based on AGN unification, in which the majority of AGNs are obscured. This agreement confirms that the faintest X-ray sources, which are dominated by the host galaxy light in the optical, are obscured AGNs. Using these Spitzer data, the AGN contribution to the extragalactic infrared background light is calculated by correlating the X-ray and infrared catalogs. This is likely to be a lower limit given that the most obscured AGNs are missed in X-rays. We estimate the contribution of AGNs missed in X-rays, using a population synthesis model, to be ~45% of the observed AGN contribution, making the AGN contribution to the infrared background at most ~2%-10% in the 3-24 ?m range, depending on wavelength, lower than most previous estimates. The AGN contribution to the infrared background remains roughly constant with source flux in the IRAC bands but decreases with decreasing flux in the MIPS 24 ?m band, where the galaxy population becomes more important.

Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) unification, which implies a large number of obscured AGNs, can explain the optical, infrared, and X-ray content of deep multiwavelength surveys. Here we show that the same model also successfully explains the spectral shape and intensity of the X-ray background. The simplest possible unified model assumes a constant ratio of obscured to unobscured AGNs, independent of redshift or luminosity. With almost no free parameters, the predicted X-ray background agrees remarkably well with observations. Both the observed properties of deep AGN samples and the X-ray background can be explained by the same model without invoking a different evolution for obscured and unobscured AGNs. Recent observational evidence shows that the ratio of obscured to unobscured AGNs may depend on luminosity. An AGN unification model that allows for such a dependence also fits the X-ray background spectrum, and the predicted number counts in the 2-10 keV X-ray band are in good agreement with observations. We present predictions for the source counts in hard X-rays (10-100 keV), which indicate that future missions such as the Black Hole Finder probe will observe thousands of heavily obscured AGNs.

The deep X-ray, optical, and far-infrared fields that constitute GOODS are sensitive to obscured AGN (N_H>10^{22} cm^{-2}) at the quasar epoch (z~2-3), as well as to unobscured AGN as distant as z~7. Luminous X-ray emission is a sign of accretion onto a supermassive black hole and thus reveals all but the most heavily obscured AGN. We combine X-ray luminosity functions with appropriate spectral energy distributions for AGN to model the X-ray, optical and far-infrared flux distributions of the X-ray sources in the GOODS fields. A simple model based on the unified paradigm for AGN, with ~3 times as many obscured AGN as unobscured, successfully reproduces the z-band flux distributions measured in the deep HST ACS observations on the GOODS North and South fields. This model is also consistent with the observed spectroscopic and photometric redshift distributions once selection effects are considered. The previously reported discrepancy between observed spectroscopic redshift distributions and the predictions of population synthesis models for the X-ray background can be explained by bias against the most heavily obscured AGN generated both by X-ray observations and the identification of sources via optical spectroscopy. We predict the AGN number counts for Spitzer MIPS 24 um and IRAC 3.6-8 um observations in the GOODS fields, which will verify whether most AGN in the early Universe are obscured in the optical. Such AGN should be very bright far-infrared sources and include some obscured AGN missed even by X-ray observations.

We investigate the X-ray number counts in the 1-2 Ms Chandra Deep Fields (CDFs) to determine the contributions of faint X-ray source populations to the extragalactic X-ray background (XRB). X-ray sources were separated into Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), star-forming galaxies, and Galactic stars based on several criteria. We find that AGN continue to dominate the number counts in the 0.5-2.0 keV and 2-8 keV bands. At flux limits of ~2.5e-17 erg cm-2 s-1 (0.5-2.0 keV) and ~1.4e-16 erg cm-2 s-1 (2-8 keV), the overall AGN source densities are 7166 (+304/-292) and 4558 (+216/-207) sources deg-2, respectively; these are factors of ~10-20 higher than found in the deepest optical spectroscopic surveys. While still a minority, the number counts of star-forming galaxies climb steeply such that they eventually achieve source densities of 1727 (+187/-169) and 711 (+270/-202) sources deg-2 at the CDF 0.5-2.0 keV and 2-8 keV flux limits, respectively. Adopting recent XRB flux densities measurements, the CDFs resolve a total of 89.5% (+5.9%/-5.7%) and 86.9% (+6.6%/-6.3%) of the extragalactic 0.5-2.0 keV and 2-8 keV XRBs, respectively. Extrapolation of the number-count slopes can easily account for the entire 0.5-2.0 keV and 2-8 keV XRBs to within statistical errors. We also revisit the reported differences between the CDF-North and CDF-South number counts, finding that the two fields are consistent except for sources in the 2-8 keV band below F(2-8 keV)~1e-15 erg cm-2 s-1, where deviations gradually increase to ~3.9 sigma.

We present the discovery of a high-redshift, X-ray-selected active galactic nucleus (AGN) by the Calan-Yale Deep Extragalactic Research (CYDER) survey: CXOCY J033716.7-050153, located at z=4.61, the second high-redshift AGN discovered by this survey. Here we present its optical, near-IR, and X-ray properties and compare it with other optical and X-ray-selected high-redshift AGNs. The optical luminosity of this object is significantly lower than most optically selected high-redshift quasars. It also has a lower rest-frame UV to X-ray emission ratio than most known quasars at this redshift. This mild deviation can be explained either by dust obscuring the UV radiation of a normal radio-quiet AGN emitting at 10% of its Eddington luminosity or because this is intrinsically a low-luminosity radio-loud AGN with a supermassive black hole of ~108 Msolar emitting at 1% of its Eddington luminosity. Deep radio observations can discriminate between these two hypotheses.

We present the Calan-Yale Deep Extragalactic Research (CYDER) Survey. The broad goals of the survey are the study of stellar populations, the star formation history of the universe and the formation and evolution of galaxies. The fields studied include Chandra deep pointings in order to characterize the X-ray faint populations. Here we present the results on the first fields studied. We find that the redshift distribution is consistent with that found in the Chandra Deep Field North. The distribution of hardness ratios is, however, softer in our sample. We find a high redshift quasar, CXOCY J125304.0-090737 at z=4.179, which suggests that the abundance of low luminosity high redshift quasars may be larger than what would be expected from reasonable extrapolations from the quasar optical luminosity function., Proceedings of the "X-ray surveys, in the light of the new observatories" workshop, Astronomische Nachrichten, in press (4 pages, 5 figures included)

(Abridged) We present results for J and Ks near-IR imaging data on a large sample of 88 galaxies drawn from the catalogue of Impey et al. (1996). The near-IR data unveils many features of LSBGs not seen before in the optical. First, a high fraction of the observed LSBGs are very luminous in the near-IR, indicating that they have a well developed old stellar population, and that older LSBGs are more frequent in the universe than data from optical bands suggested. Second, the near-IR morphologies are often quite different than seen in the optical. Third, we find significant trends between the near-IR morphologies of the galaxies and their ratio of HI mass to near-IR luminosity. Fourth, we find no trend in disk surface brightness with absolute magnitude, but significant correlations when the bulge surface brightness is used. Finally, we find that the formation of a bulge requires a galaxy to have a total baryonic mass above ~ 10**10 Msun. A wide variety of other correlations are explored for the sample. The strongest of our correlations are with the ratio of HI mass to total baryonic mass, MHI/Mbaryonic, which tracks the evolutionary state of the galaxies as they convert gas into stars, and which ranges from 0.05 up to nearly 1 for the galaxies in our sample. We see also trends between MHI/Mbaryonic and central surface density, suggesting that increased star formation efficiency with increasing gas surface density strongly drives the conversion of gas into stars., Accepted in the Astronomical Journal. 48 pages, 20 Figures

Nature 474, 356–358 (2011); doi:10.1038/nature10103 Subsequent analysis with updated methodology by us and others1,2 has not confirmed the detection of the population described in this Letter. We suspect, as described in later work by our group3, that the original signal was likely to be an artefactarising from the cut we chose for the background subtraction for the stacked archival data (our technique and adopted methodology is described in detail in the Supplementary Information of the original Letter).

We report on observations of NGC1068 with NuSTAR, which provide the best constraints to date on its $>10$~keV spectral shape. We find no strong variability over the past two decades, consistent with its Compton-thick AGN classification. The combined NuSTAR, Chandra, XMM-Newton, and Swift-BAT spectral dataset offers new insights into the complex reflected emission. The critical combination of the high signal-to-noise NuSTAR data and a spatial decomposition with Chandra allow us to break several model degeneracies and greatly aid physical interpretation. When modeled as a monolithic (i.e., a single N_H) reflector, none of the common Compton-reflection models are able to match the neutral fluorescence lines and broad spectral shape of the Compton reflection. A multi-component reflector with three distinct column densities (e.g., N_H~1.5e23, 5e24, and 1e25 cm^{-2}) provides a more reasonable fit to the spectral lines and Compton hump, with near-solar Fe abundances. In this model, the higher N_H components provide the bulk of the Compton hump flux while the lower N_H component produces much of the line emission, effectively decoupling two key features of Compton reflection. We study the incidence of nuclear obscuration on a complete sample of 1310 AGN selected on the basis of their rest-frame 2-10 keV X-ray flux from the XMM-COSMOS survey, in the redshift range 0.3, Comment: 18 pages, 17 figures, 2 tables. Accepted for publication by MNRAS

We present an analysis of broad emission lines observed in moderate-luminosity active galactic nuclei (AGNs), typical of those found in X-ray surveys of deep fields, with the aim to test the validity of single-epoch virial black hole mass estimates. We have acquired near-infrared (NIR) spectra of AGNs up to z ~ 1.8 in the COSMOS and Extended Chandra Deep Field-South Survey, with the Fiber Multi-Object Spectrograph (FMOS) mounted on the Subaru Telescope. These low-resolution NIR spectra provide a significant detection of the broad Halpha line that has been shown to be a reliable probe of black hole mass at low redshift. Our sample has existing optical spectroscopy which provides a detection of MgII, a broad emission line typically used for black hole mass estimation at z > 1. We carry out a spectral-line fitting procedure using both Halpha and MgII to determine the virial velocity of gas in the broad line region, the monochromatic continuum luminosity at 3000 A, and the total Halpha line luminosity. With a sample of 43 AGNs spanning a range of two decades in luminosity (i.e., L ~ 10^44-46 ergs/s), we find a tight correlation between the continuum and line luminosity with a distribution characterized by = 1.52 and a dispersion sigma = 0.16. There is also a close one-to-one relationship between the FWHM of Halpha and of MgII up to 10000 km/s with a dispersion of 0.14 in the distribution of the logarithm of their ratios. Both of these then lead to there being very good agreement between Halpha- and MgII-based masses over a wide range in black hole mass (i.e., M_BH ~ 10^7-9 M_sun). We do find a small offset in MgII-based masses, relative to those based on Halpha, of +0.17 dex and a dispersion sigma = 0.32. In general, these results demonstrate that local scaling relations, using MgII or Halpha, are applicable for AGN at moderate luminosities and up to z ~ 2., Comment: Submitted to ApJ, 9 pages, 7 figures

The Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR) mission, launched on 2012 June 13, is the first focusing high-energy X-ray telescope in orbit. NuSTAR operates in the band from 3 to 79 keV, extending the sensitivity of focusing far beyond the ~10 keV high-energy cutoff achieved by all previous X-ray satellites. The inherently low background associated with concentrating the X-ray light enables NuSTAR to probe the hard X-ray sky with a more than 100-fold improvement in sensitivity over the collimated or coded mask instruments that have operated in this bandpass. Using its unprecedented combination of sensitivity and spatial and spectral resolution, NuSTAR will pursue five primary scientific objectives: (1) probe obscured active galactic nucleus (AGN) activity out to the peak epoch of galaxy assembly in the universe (at z[< over ~]2) by surveying selected regions of the sky; (2) study the population of hard X-ray-emitting compact objects in the Galaxy by mapping the central regions of the Milky Way; (3) study the non-thermal radiation in young supernova remnants, both the hard X-ray continuum and the emission from the radioactive element [superscript 44]Ti; (4) observe blazars contemporaneously with ground-based radio, optical, and TeV telescopes, as well as with Fermi and Swift, to constrain the structure of AGN jets; and (5) observe line and continuum emission from core-collapse supernovae in the Local Group, and from nearby Type Ia events, to constrain explosion models. During its baseline two-year mission, NuSTAR will also undertake a broad program of targeted observations. The observatory consists of two co-aligned grazing-incidence X-ray telescopes pointed at celestial targets by a three-axis stabilized spacecraft. Deployed into a 600 km, near-circular, 6° inclination orbit, the observatory has now completed commissioning, and is performing consistent with pre-launch expectations. NuSTAR is now executing its primary science mission, and with an expected orbit lifetime of 10 yr, we anticipate proposing a guest investigator program, to begin in late 2014., United States. We constrain the total accreted mass density in supermassive black holes at z>6, inferred via the upper limit derived from the integrated X-ray emission from a sample of photometrically selected galaxy candidates. Studying galaxies obtained from the deepest Hubble Space Telescope images combined with the Chandra 4 Msec observations of the Chandra Deep Field South, we achieve the most restrictive constraints on total black hole growth in the early Universe. We report on the first ten identifications of sources serendipitously detected by the NuSTAR to provide the first sensitive census of the cosmic X-ray background (CXB) source population at >10 keV. We find that these NuSTAR-detected sources are ~100x fainter than those previously detected at >10 keV and have a broad range in redshift and luminosity (z=0.020-2.923 and L_10-40 keV~4x10^{41}-5x10^{45} erg/s); the median redshift and luminosity are z~0.7 and L_10-40 keV~3x10^{44} erg/s, respectively. We characterize these sources on the basis of broad-band ~0.5-32 keV spectroscopy, optical spectroscopy, and broad-band ultraviolet-to-mid-infrared SED analyzes. We find that the dominant source population is quasars with L_10-40 keV>10^{44} erg/s, of which ~50% are obscured with N_H>10^{22} cm^{-2}. However, none of the ten NuSTAR sources are Compton thick (N_H>10^{24} cm^{-2}) and we place a 90% confidence upper limit on the fraction of Compton-thick quasars (L_10-40 keV>10^{44} erg/s) selected at >10 keV of ~33% over the redshift range z=0.5-1.1. We jointly fitted the rest-frame ~10-40 keV data for all of the non-beamed sources with L_10-40 keV>10^{43} erg/s to constrain the average strength of reflection; we find R10 keV. We also constrain the host galaxy masses and find a median stellar mass of ~10^{11} M_sun, a factor ~5 times higher than the median stellar mass of nearby high-energy selected AGNs, which may be at least partially driven by the order of magnitude higher X-ray luminosities of the NuSTAR sources. Within the low source-statistic limitations of our study, our results suggest that the overall properties of the NuSTAR sources are broadly similar to those of nearby high-energy selected AGNs but scaled up in luminosity and mass., ApJ, in press; 22 pages, 12 figures, 5 tables

We present the largest high-redshift (3 < z < 6.85) sample of X-ray-selected active galactic nuclei (AGNs) on a contiguous field, using sources detected in the Chandra COSMOS-Legacy survey. The sample contains 174 sources, 87 with spectroscopic redshift and the other 87 with photometric redshift (z phot). In this work, we treat z phot as a probability-weighted sum of contributions, adding to our sample the contribution of sources with z phot < 3 but z phot probability distribution >0 at z > 3. We compute the number counts in the observed 0.5–2 keV band, finding a decline in the number of sources at z > 3 and constraining phenomenological models of the X-ray background. We compute the AGN space density at z > 3 in two different luminosity bins. At higher luminosities (logL(2–10 keV) > 44.1 erg s?1), the space density declines exponentially, dropping by a factor of ~20 from z ~ 3 to z ~ 6. The observed decline is ~80% steeper at lower luminosities (43.55 erg s?1 < logL(2–10 keV) < 44.1 erg s?1) from z ~ 3 to z ~ 4.5. We study the space density evolution dividing our sample into optically classified Type 1 and Type 2 AGNs. At logL(2–10 keV) > 44.1 erg s?1, unobscured and obscured objects may have different evolution with redshift, with the obscured component being three times higher at z ~ 5. Finally, we compare our space density with predictions of quasar activation merger models, whose calibration is based on optically luminous AGNs. These models significantly overpredict the number of expected AGNs at logL (2–10 keV) > 44.1 erg s?1 with respect to our data.

This study explored the GALEX ultraviolet (UV) properties of optical red sequence galaxies in 4 rich Abell clusters at z \leq 0.1. In particular, we tried to find a hint of merger-induced recent star formation (RSF) in red sequence galaxies. Using the NUV - r' colors of the galaxies, RSF fractions were derived based on various criteria for post-merger galaxies and normal galaxies. Following k-correction, about 36% of the post-merger galaxies were classified as RSF galaxies with a conservative criterion (NUV - r' \leq 5), and that number was doubled (~ 72%) when using a generous criterion (NUV - r' \leq 5.4). The trend was the same when we restricted the sample to galaxies within 0.5xR_{200}. Post-merger galaxies with strong UV emission showed more violent, asymmetric features in the deep optical images. The RSF fractions did not show any trend along the clustocentric distance within R_{200}. We performed a Dressler-Shectman test to check whether the RSF galaxies had any correlation with the sub-structures in the galaxy clusters. Within R_{200} of each cluster, the RSF galaxies did not appear to be preferentially related to the clusters' sub-structures. Our results suggested that only 30% of RSF red sequence galaxies show morphological hints of recent galaxy mergers. This implies that internal processes (e.g., stellar mass-loss or hot gas cooling) for the supply of cold gas to early-type galaxies may play a significant role in the residual star formation of early-type galaxies at a recent epoch., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We release the next installment of the Stripe 82 X-ray survey point-source catalog, which currently covers 31.3 deg$^2$ of the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Stripe 82 Legacy field. In total, 6181 unique X-ray sources are significantly detected with {\it XMM-Newton} ($>5\sigma$) and {\it Chandra} ($>4.5\sigma$). This catalog release includes data from {\it XMM-Newton} cycle AO 13, which approximately doubled the Stripe 82X survey area. The flux limits of the Stripe 82X survey are $8.7\times10^{-16}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$, $4.7\times10^{-15}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$, and $2.1\times10^{-15}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ in the soft (0.5-2 keV), hard (2-10 keV), and full bands (0.5-10 keV), respectively, with approximate half-area survey flux limits of $5.4\times10^{-15}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$, $2.9\times10^{-14}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$, and $1.7\times10^{-14}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$. We matched the X-ray source lists to available multi-wavelength catalogs, including updated matches to the previous release of the Stripe 82X survey; 88\% of the sample is matched to a multi-wavelength counterpart. Due to the wide area of Stripe 82X and rich ancillary multi-wavelength data, including coadded SDSS photometry, mid-infrared {\it WISE} coverage, near-infrared coverage from UKIDSS and VHS, ultraviolet coverage from {\it GALEX}, radio coverage from FIRST, and far-infrared coverage from {\it Herschel}, as well as existing $\sim$30\% optical spectroscopic completeness, we are beginning to uncover rare objects, such as obscured high-luminosity AGN at high-redshift. The Stripe 82X point source catalog is a valuable dataset for constraining how this population grows and evolves, as well as for studying how they interact with the galaxies in which they live., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ; 23 pages (emulateapj)

We present a new metric that uses the spectral curvature (SC) above 10 keV to identify Compton-thick AGN in low-quality Swift BAT X-ray data. Using NuSTAR, we observe nine high SC-selected AGN. We find that high-sensitivity spectra show the majority are Compton-thick (78% or 7/9) and the remaining two are nearly Compton-thick (NH~5-8x10^23 cm^-2). We find the SC_bat and SC_nustar measurements are consistent, suggesting this technique can be applied to future telescopes. We tested the SC method on well-known Compton-thick AGN and find it is much more effective than broad band ratios (e.g. 100% using SC vs. 20% using 8-24/3-8 keV). Our results suggest that using the >10 keV emission may be the only way to identify this population since only two sources show Compton-thick levels of excess in the OIII to X-ray emission ratio (F_OIII/F_2-10 keV>1) and WISE colors do not identify most of them as AGN. Based on this small sample, we find that a higher fraction of these AGN are in the final merger stage than typical BAT AGN. Additionally, these nine obscured AGN have, on average, four times higher accretion rates than other BAT-detected AGN (Edd ratio=0.068 compared to 0.016). The robustness of SC at identifying Compton-thick AGN implies a higher fraction of nearby AGN may be Compton-thick (~22%) and the sum of black hole growth in Compton-thick AGN (Eddington ratio times population percentage), is nearly as large as mildly obscured and unobscured AGN., Accepted to ApJ, 19 pages, 12 figures

We present the first results of a wide area X-ray survey within the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) Stripe 82, a 300 deg$^2$ region of the sky with a substantial investment in multi-wavelength coverage. We analyzed archival {\it Chandra} observations that cover 7.5 deg$^2$ within Stripe 82 ("Stripe 82 ACX"), reaching 4.5$\sigma$ flux limits of 7.9$\times10^{-16}$, 3.4$\times10^{-15}$ and 1.8$\times10^{-15}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$ in the soft (0.5-2 keV), hard (2-7 keV) and full (0.5-7 keV) bands, to find 774, 239 and 1118 X-ray sources, respectively. Three hundred twenty-one sources are detected only in the full band and 9 sources are detected solely in the soft band. Utilizing data products from the {\it Chandra} Source Catalog, we construct independent Log$N$-Log$S$ relationships, detailing the number density of X-ray sources as a function of flux, which show general agreement with previous {\it Chandra} surveys. We compare the luminosity distribution of Stripe 82 ACX with the smaller, deeper CDF-S + E-CDFS surveys and with {\it Chandra}-COSMOS, illustrating the benefit of wide-area surveys in locating high luminosity AGN. We also investigate the differences and similarities of X-ray and optical selection to uncover obscured AGN in the local Universe. Finally, we estimate the population of AGN we expect to find with increased coverage of 100 deg$^2$ or 300 deg$^2$, which will provide unprecedented insight into the high redshift, high luminosity regime of black hole growth currently under-represented in X-ray surveys., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS, 15 pages, 6 Figures, 2 Tables

We present the results from a Chandra pilot study of 12 massive galaxy mergers selected from Galaxy Zoo. The sample includes major mergers down to a host galaxy mass of 10$^{11}$ $M_\odot$ that already have optical AGN signatures in at least one of the progenitors. We find that the coincidences of optically selected active nuclei with mildly obscured ($N_H \lesssim 1.1 \times 10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$) X-ray nuclei are relatively common (8/12), but the detections are too faint ($< 40$ counts per nucleus; $f_{2-10 keV} \lesssim 1.2 \times 10^{-13}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{-2}$) to reliably separate starburst and nuclear activity as the origin of the X-ray emission. Only one merger is found to have confirmed binary X-ray nuclei, though the X-ray emission from its southern nucleus could be due solely to star formation. Thus, the occurrences of binary AGN in these mergers are rare (0-8%), unless most merger-induced active nuclei are very heavily obscured or Compton thick., 8 pages, including 5 figures and 1 table. Ultra-luminous Infrared Galaxies (ULIRGs), defined a sources with LIR>1012L⊙, represent a significant stage in galaxy evolution. ULIRGs are connected to gas-rich major mergers, both locally and at high redshifts. These events can trigger significant and simultaneous star formation and black hole growth episodes, maybe holding the key to understand their connection. Here, I review the main observations of ULIRGs at all wavelengths, with emphasis in mid-IR and hard X-rays, which revealed the presence of heavily-obscured growing supermassive black holes in most of these sources. Future NuSTAR and ASTRO-H observations at hard X-rays and ALMA in the mm/sub-mm will allow to confirm this connection and study these sources in more detail.

Significant progress has been made in the last few years on understanding how supermassive black holes form and grow. In this paper, we begin by reviewing the spectral signatures of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) ranging from radio to hard X-ray wavelengths. We then describe the most commonly used methods to find these sources, including optical/UV, radio, infrared and X-ray emission and optical emission lines. We then describe the main observational properties of the obscured and unobscured AGN population. Finally, we summarize the cosmic history of black hole accretion, i.e., when in the history of the Universe supermassive black holes were getting most of their mass. We present a study of the multi-wavelength properties, from the mid-infrared to the hard X-rays, of a sample of 255 spectroscopically identified X-ray selected Type-2 AGN from the XMM-COSMOS survey. Most of them are obscured the X-ray absorbing column density is determined by either X-ray spectral analyses (for the 45% of the sample), or from hardness ratios. Spectral Energy Distributions (SEDs) are computed for all sources in the sample. The average SEDs in the optical band is dominated by the host-galaxy light, especially at low X-ray luminosities and redshifts. There is also a trend between X-ray and mid-infrared luminosity: the AGN contribution in the infrared is higher at higher X-ray luminosities. We calculate bolometric luminosities, bolometric corrections, stellar masses and star formation rates (SFRs) for these sources using a multi-component modeling to properly disentangle the emission associated to stellar light from that due to black hole accretion. For 90% of the sample we also have the morphological classifications obtained with an upgraded version of the Zurich Estimator of Structural Types (ZEST+). We find that on average Type-2 AGN have lower bolometric corrections than Type-1 AGN. Moreover, we confirm that the morphologies of AGN host-galaxies indicate that there is a preference for these Type-2 AGN to be hosted in bulge-dominated galaxies with stellar masses greater than 10^10 solar masses., 16 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

One of the key open questions in cosmology today pertains to understanding when, where and how super massive black holes form, while it is clear that mergers likely play a significant role in the growth cycles of black holes, how supermassive black holes form, and how galaxies grow around them. Here, we present Hubble Space Telescope WFC3/IR grism observations of a clumpy galaxy at z=1.35, with evidence for 10^6 - 10^7 Msun rapidly growing black holes in separate sub-components of the host galaxy. These black holes could have been brought into close proximity as a consequence of a rare multiple galaxy merger or they could have formed in situ. Such holes would eventually merge into a central black hole as the stellar clumps/components presumably coalesce to form a galaxy bulge. If we are witnessing the in-situ formation of multiple black holes, their properties can inform seed formation models and raise the possibility that massive black holes can continue to emerge in star-forming galaxies as late as z=1.35 (4.8 Gyr after the Big Bang)., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ Letters. 6 pages, 4 figures, 1 table

We have discovered a binary AGN in the galaxy Mrk 739 using Chandra and Swift BAT. We find two luminous L_2-10 keV=1.1*10^43 and 1.0*10^42 erg/s, unresolved nuclei with a projected separation of 3.4 kpc (5.8\pm0.1) coincident with two bulge components in the optical image. The western X-ray source (Mrk 739W) is highly variable (2.5x) during the 4-hour Chandra observation and has a very hard spectrum consistent with an AGN. While the eastern component was already known to be an AGN based on the presence of broad optical recombination lines, Mrk 739W shows no evidence of being an AGN in optical, UV, and radio observations, suggesting the critical importance of high spatial resolution hard X-ray observations (>2 keV) in finding these binary AGN. A high level of star formation combined with a very low L_[O III]/L_2-10 keV ratio cause the AGN to be missed in optical observations. CO observations of the (3-2) and (2-1) lines indicate large amounts of molecular gas in the system that could be driven towards the black holes during the violent galaxy collision and be key to fueling the binary AGN. Mrk 739E has a high Eddington ratio of 0.71 and a small black hole (log M_BH=7.05\pm0.3) consistent with an efficiently accreting AGN.
