Objectives: Current guidelines recommend the eosin-5′-maleimide (EMA) binding test and cryohemolysis test for screening for hereditary spherocytosis (HS), and the flow cytometric osmotic fragility (FC OF) test was recently developed to replace the classic OF test. We evaluatedthe performance of the EMA binding test, FC OF test, cryohemolysis test, and the hemoglobin (Hb)/mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) ratio in the diagnosis of HS and assessed whether these tests reflect the clinical severity of HS. Methods: A total of 153 patients with anemia (33 with HS, 40 with autoimmune hemolytic anemia, 40 with anemia of chronic disease, and 40 with iron deficiency anemia [IDA]) and 140 healthy controls were enrolled, and the performance of the three tests was evaluated. Results: Both the EMA binding test (area under the curve [AUC], 0.996) and the FC OF test (AUC, 0.992) performed satisfactorily, but the cryohemolysis test (AUC, 0.723) performed significantly worse because of false positivity in patients with IDA. The Hb/MCHC ratio ( P < .001) was able to reflect the clinical severity of HS. Conclusions: Our results demonstrate that both the EMA binding and FC OF tests are useful as screening tests for the diagnosis of HS, but the cryohemolysis test has limited use due to its false positivity in IDA, with the Hb/MCHC ratio the most useful parameter for assessing the clinical severity of HS.

PURPOSE: Despite the rapid improvement in survival rate from Burkitt lymphoma and mature B-cell lymphoblastic leukemia (B-ALL) in children, a small subset of patients do not respond to first-line chemotherapy or experience relapse (RL). Herein, we report the clinical characteristics and outcomes of these patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: RL or refractory Burkitt lymphoma and mature B-ALL in 125 patients diagnosed from 1990 to 2009 were retrospectively analyzed. RESULTS: Nineteen patients experienced RL or progressive disease (PD). Among them, 12 patients had PD or RL less than six months after initial treatment and seven had late RL. Seven patients achieved complete response (CR), 11 had PD, and one had no more therapy. Six patients who achieved CR survived without evidence of disease and four of them underwent high-dose chemotherapy (HDC) followed by stem cell transplantation (SCT). However, 11 patients who failed to obtain CR eventually died of their disease. Five-year overall survival (OS) was 31.6±10.7%. OS of patients with late RL was superior to that of patients with early RL (57.1±18.7%, vs. 16.7±10.8%, p=0.014). Achievement of CR after reinduction had significant OS (p < 0.001). OS for patients who were transplanted was superior (p < 0.01). In multivariate analysis, achievement of CR after reinduction chemotherapy showed an association with improved OS (p=0.05). CONCLUSION: Late RL and chemotherapy-sensitive patients have the chance to achieve continuous CR using HDC/SCT, whereas patients who are refractory to retrieval therapy have poor prognosis. Therefore, novel salvage strategy is required for improvement of survival for this small set of patients.

Diverse pesticidal activities of anthothecol derived from Khaya anthotheca (Meliaceae) and three limonoids (gedunin, limonin and obacunone) were determined using six phytopathogenic fungi and four insect pests. Anthothecol showed fungicidal activity to Puccinia recondita with control rates of 90, 76 and 53% at concentrations 0.5, 0.25 and 0.1 mg/mL, respectively, while the other limonoids exhibited little inhibitory effect on the fungal survival. The currently used fungicide mancozeb possessed potent fungicidal activity on P. recondite, with 92.3% controlling effect at a concentration of 0.005 mg/mL. Anthothecol exhibited larvicidal activity to Plutella xylostella with 80, 50 and 30% mortality at concentrations of 1.0, 0.5 and 0.25 mg/mL, respectively. Anthothecol showed selective pesticidal activity on P. recondita and P. xylostella. Structural re-examination of anthothecol was conducted and is reported.

This study reports on the synthesis of carbon nanofibers via chemical vapor deposition using Co and Cu as catalysts. In order to investigate the suitability of their catalytic activity for the growth of nanofibers, we prepared catalysts for the synthesis of carbon nanofibers with Cobalt nitrate and Copper nitrate, and found the optimum concentration of each respective catalyst. Then we made them react with Aluminum nitrate and Ammonium Molybdate to form precipitates. The precipitates were dried at a temperature of 110 °C in order to be prepared into catalyst powder. The catalyst was sparsely and thinly spread on a quartz tube boat to grow carbon nanofibers via thermal chemical vapor deposition. The characteristics of the synthesized carbon nanofibers were analyzed through SEM, EDS, XRD, Raman, XPS, and TG/DTA, and the specific surface area was measured via BET. Consequently, the characteristics of the synthesized carbon nanofibers were greatly influenced by the concentration ratio of metal catalysts. In particular, uniform carbon nanofibers of 27 nm in diameter grew when the concentration ratio of Co and Cu was 6:4 at 700 °C of calcination temperature; carbon nanofibers synthesized under such conditions showed the best crystallizability, compared to carbon nanofibers synthesized with metal catalysts under different concentration ratios, and revealed 1.26 high amorphicity as well as 292 m 2 g �1 high specific surface area.

There is a wide variety of genital abnormalities observed in patients with Denys-Drash syndrome (DDS). WT1 is thought to influence the genes related to genital development and mutations in this gene have been associated with DDS. DDS should be considered in the differential diagnosis of newborns with genital anomalies. In contrast to other conditions with 46,XY disorders of sex development, individuals with DDS often have duplicated genital organs (a double vagina, cervix or uterus). A double uterus has not yet been reported with 1390G>A (Arg464 Asn) mutation. However, duplicated genitals have been reported with other genetic mutations in patients with DDS. The duplicated genitals in DDS may be associated with low anti-Mullerian hormone (AMH) secretion. Measurement of the AMH levels may add to our understanding of variations in genital development and their abnormalities in disorders such as DDS. In conclusion, this is first case of low level of AMH and double uterus in 1390G>A (Arg464 Asn) mutations of DDS male.

Conducting polymers are excellent sensing materials in the design of bioanalytical sensors because of their electronic conductivity, low energy optical transitions, biocompatibility, and room temperature operation. Among them, Polypyrrole (Ppy) is one of the most extensively used conducting polymers because of a number of properties such as redox activity, rapid electron transfer, and ability to link a variety of biomolecules to pyrrole groups by chemical treatment. In this study, Ppy nanowires were synthesized by an electrospinning method. The nanowires were prepared from a solution mixture of Ppy and poly(ethylene oxide). The method of detection in such a device is based on the selective binding of antigen onto an antibody that is covalently attached to the nanowires. Thus, anti-IgG was immobilized on Ppy nanowires using an EDC {[N-(3-dimethyl aminopropyl)-N2-ethylcarbodiimide hydrochloride]}-NHS(N-hydrosuccinimide) modified technique. Fluorescence images of BSA–FITC (fluorescein isothiocyanate labeling of bovine serum albumin) conjugation demonstrated that antibody was functionalized on the Ppy nanowires without non-specific binding and facilitated selective detection of antigen. Current–voltage (I–V) characterization was used to monitor the change in the conductivity of nanowires while the specific binding interaction occurred. These results of electrical properties enable Ppy nanowire-based biosensors to detect biomolecules in real-time.

A nationwide survey was conducted to clarify the clinical features and outcomes of Korean children with Langerhans cell histiocytosis (LCH). Korea Histiocytosis Working Party analyzed the data of 603 patients who were diagnosed with LCH between 1986 and 2010 from 28 institutions in Korea. Median age at diagnosis was 65 months (range, 0 to 276 mo). Bone was the most frequently affected organ (79.6%) followed by skin (19.2%). Initially, 419 patients (69.5%) had single-system involvement (SS), 85 (14.1%) with multisystem (MS) disease without risk organ involvement (MS-RO), and 99 (16.4%) multisystem disease with risk organ involvement (MS-RO). The 5-year overall survival (OS) rates in the SS, MS-RO, and MS-RO groups were 99.8%, 98.4%, and 77.0%, respectively (P

Splenic abscess is a rare finding in children. Splenectomy combined with broad-spectrum antibiotics has been the treatment of choice for multiple splenic abscesses. Herein, we report the case of a 14-year-old girl with multiple large splenic abscesses that were successfully managed after two image-guided percutaneous drainage procedures and administration of intravenous antibiotics. Initially, an abscess located at the periphery in the lower pole of the spleen was aspirated under ultrasound guidance. Finally, another abscess located near the hilum of the spleen was drained under computed tomography guidance. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first report of multiple large splenic abscesses treated with computed tomography-guided percutaneous drainage.

Kawasaki disease (KD) is an acute febrile illness that is the predominant cause of pediatric acquired heart disease in infants and young children. Because the diagnosis of KD depends on clinical manifestations, incomplete cases are difficult to diagnose, especially in infants younger than 1 year. Incomplete clinical manifestations in infants are related with the development of KD-associated coronary artery abnormalities. Because the diagnosis of infantile KD is difficult and complications are numerous, early suspicion and evaluation are necessary.

Purpose Chronic day-to-day symptoms of orthostatic intolerance are the most notable features of postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS). However, we have encountered patients with such symptoms and excessive tachycardia but with no symptoms during the tilt-table test (TTT). We aimed to investigate whether POTS patients with chronic orthostatic intolerance always present orthostatic symptoms during the TTT and analyze the factors underlying symptom manifestation during this test. Methods We retrospectively examined patients who presented with POTS at the Gyeongsang National University Hospital between 2008 and 2011. Diagnosis of POTS was based on chronic day-to-day orthostatic intolerance symptoms as well as excessive tachycardia during the TTT. The patients were divided two groups depending on the presentation of orthostatic symptoms during the TTT. Clinical data and the results of the TTT were compared between these groups. Results In 22 patients, 7 patients (31.8%) did not present orthostatic symptoms during the test. Diastolic blood pressure (BP) was significantly lower in the symptom-positive group. The head-up tilt resulted in a significant increase in diastolic BP in the symptom-negative group (P=0.04), while systolic BP had a tendency to decrease in the symptom-positive group (P=0.06). Conclusion Significant patients with POTS did not present orthostatic symptoms during the TTT despite having chronic daily symptoms. This finding may be important for establishing definitive diagnostic criteria for pediatric POTS. Development of symptoms during TTT might be related to low diastolic BP and abnormal compensatory responses to orthostasis.

Feline morbillivirus (FeMV), a member of the family Paramyxoviridae, is an emerging virus that was discovered in 2012. Despite the importance of FeMV infection in cats because of its postulated involvement in kidney diseases, no simple serological assay has been reported in its detection. Here, FeMV phosphoprotein (P protein) was expressed and purified as a glutathione-S-transferase (GST)-fusion protein and used for an enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) to detect FeMV-specific antibodies. With a cutoff value determined by immunoblotting, anti-FeMV P protein was detected with this assay in 22 (22%) of the 100 cat plasma samples collected from various regions of Japan. This ELISA is useful for epidemiological and immunological studies, as well as for diagnosis of FeMV infection.

Background Feline morbillivirus (FmoPV) is a novel paramyxovirus found to infect domestic cats. FmoPV has been isolated in several countries in Asia and Europe and is considered to have genetic diversity. Also, it is suspected to be associated with feline renal diseases including tubulointerstitial nephritis (TIN), which affects domestic cats with a high incidence rate. Results To clarify the state of FmoPV infection among domestic cats in Japan, an epidemiological survey was conducted. Twenty-one out of 100 cats were found to have serum antibodies (Ab) against FmoPV-N protein by indirect immunofluorescence assay (IF) using FmoPV-N protein-expressing HeLa cells. Twenty-two of the cats were positive for FmoPV RNA in the urine and/or renal tissues. In total, 29 cats were positive for Ab and/or viral RNA. These FmoPV-infected cats were classified into three different phases of infection: RNA+/Ab + (14 cats), RNA+/Ab- (8 cats) and RNA-/Ab + (7 cats). In immunohistochemistry (IHC), 19 out of 29 cats were positive for FmoPV-N protein in kidney tissues; however, the FmoPV-N protein was located in the inflammatory lesions with severe grade in only four out of the 19 cats. Since 15 out of 29 infected cats were positive for viral RNA and Ab, approximately half of the infected cats were persistently infected with FmoPV. Conclusions A statistically significant difference was observed between infection of FmoPV and the presence of inflammatory changes in renal lesions, indicating a relationship between FmoPV infection and feline renal diseases. However, we could not obtain histopathological evidence of a relationship between FmoPV infection and TIN.

Twelve methylenedioxy-containing compounds including piperine and 10 piperine-like synthetic compounds were assessed to determine their antifungal and antiaflatoxigenic activities against Aspergillus flavus ATCC 22546 in terms of their structure-activity relationships. Piperonal and 1,3-benzodioxole had inhibitory effects against A. flavus mycelial growth and aflatoxin B1 production up to a concentration of 1000 mu g/mL. Ten piperine-like synthetic compounds were synthesized that differed in terms of the carbon length in the hydrocarbon backbone and the presence of the methylenedioxy moiety. In particular, 1-(2-methylpiperidin-1-yl)-3-phenylprop-2-en-1-one had potent antifungal and antiaflatoxigenic effects against A. flavus up to a concentration of 1 mu g/mL. This synthetic compound was remarkable because the positive control thiabendazole had no inhibitory effect at this concentration. Reverse transcription-PCR analysis showed that five genes involved in aflatoxin biosynthesis pathways were down-regulated in A. flavus, i.e., aflD, aflK, aflQ, aflR, and aflS; therefore, the synthetic compound inhibited aflatoxin production by down-regulating these genes.

We report a human parechovirus-3 (HPeV-3) infection in 2 neonates who had prolonged fever (>5 days) with palmar-plantar erythema. This distinctive rash was observed 4–5 days after fever onset, just before defervescence. Elevated aspartate aminotransferase, lactate dehydrogenase, and ferritin levels were characteristic laboratory findings in the 2 cases, suggesting tissue damage caused by hypercytokinemia. Case 1 was treated with intravenous immunoglobulin, considering the possibility of severe systemic inflammatory responses. The initial ferritin level was 385 ng/mL (range, 0–400 ng/mL); however, the level increased to 2,581 ng/dL on day 5 after fever onset. Case 2 presented with milder clinical symptoms, and the patient recovered spontaneously. HPeV-3 was detected in cerebrospinal fluid and/or blood samples, but no other causative agents were detected. The findings from our cases, in accordance with recent studies, suggest that clinical features such as palmar-plantar erythema and/or hyperferritinemia might be indicators of HPeV-3 infection in neonates with sepsis-like illness. In clinical practice, where virology testing is not easily accessible, clinical features such as palmar-plantar erythema and/or hyperferritinemia might be helpful to diagnose HPeV-3 infection.

To distinguish between febrile infants with cerebrospinal fluid pleocytosis who are finally diagnosed with Kawasaki disease and those with enterovirus meningitis poses a diagnostic challenge. We compared clinical and laboratory features at admission between two groups of infants, aged 30-90 days, to identify markers of Kawasaki disease that initially presented as cerebrospinal fluid pleocytosis. During a 2-year period, 100 patients exhibiting cerebrospinal fluid pleocytosis were studied, including six (6.0%) with Kawasaki disease and 30 (30.0%) with enterovirus meningitis. A longer duration of fever before admission (P < 0.01), higher absolute neutrophil count (P < 0.01), increased C-reactive protein level (P < 0.01), pyuria (P = 0.02), and less prominent cerebrospinal fluid pleocytosis (P = 0.01) were identified as initial features of infants finally diagnosed with Kawasaki disease. No significant differences were evident in white blood cell count; platelet count; levels of hemoglobin, alanine aminotransaminase, aspartate aminotransferase, albumin, and sodium; cerebrospinal fluid chemistry; or presence of a rash. Our observations may offer early indicators of Kawasaki disease for timely diagnoses in febrile infants with cerebrospinal fluid pleocytosis.

A 4-year-old girl with Panayiotopoulos syndrome presented with a history of 4 prolonged autonomic seizures. The clinical features of her seizures included, in order of occurrence, blank staring, pallor, vomiting, hemi-clonic movement on the right side, and unresponsiveness. A brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a slightly high T(2) signal in the left hippocampus. Interictal electoencephalogram revealed spikes in the occipital area of the left hemisphere. We analyzed the current-source distribution of the spikes to examine the relationship between the current source and the high T(2) signal. The current source of the occipital spikes was not only distributed in the occipital area of both cerebral hemispheres, but also extended to the posterior temporal area of the left hemisphere. These findings suggest that the left temporal lobe may be one of the hyperexcitable areas and form part of the epileptogenic area in this patient. We hypothesized that the high T(2) signal in the left hippocampus of our patient may not have been an incidental lesion, but instead may be related to the underlying electroclinical diagnosis of Panayiotopoulos syndrome, and particularly seizure. This notion is important because an abnormal T(2) signal in the hippocampus may represent an acute stage of hippocampal injury, although there is no previous report of hippocampal pathology in Panayiotopoulos syndrome. Therefore, long-term observation and serial follow-up MRIs may be needed to confirm the clinical significance of the T(2) signal change in the hippocampus of this patient.

We report the case of a six-year-old female with childhood absence epilepsy who developed combined aPTT prolongation, not corrected by normal plasma, and atypical skin eruption six months after initiating lamotrigine treatment with dose increment. Two weeks after lamotrigine withdrawal, the skin eruption disappeared and aPTT normalised. To our knowledge, this is the first report of aPTT prolongation possibly due to factor inhibitors associated with lamotrigine monotherapy.

Background: Hypoxemia was found to be a major cause of death from pandemic H1N1 2009 influenza (pH1N1) infection. There are limited data on factors associated with hypoxemia in children infected with pH1N1 influenza virus. Methods: Factors associated with hypoxemia were investigated using univariate and multivariate analysis in 76 hospitalized pediatric patients with laboratory-confirmed H1N1 influenza virus infection at Gyeongsang National University Hospital in Jinju, South Korea, from August 2009 to January 2010 by retrospective chart review. Results: Hypoxemia occurred in 17 children (22%), of whom three were admitted to an intensive care unit and one died. Hypoxemic patients were significantly more likely to have a higher respiratory rate, pulse rate, white blood cell count (WBC), and C-reactive protein level, as well as a longer hospital stay. Respiratory rate and WBC count at admission were independently associated with hypoxemia as determined on multivariate analysis, and this association was found to be clinically significant. Conclusion: Although a higher WBC count and respiratory rate may not be specific for pHINI but represent the degree of disease severity for any infectious respiratory disease in general, clinicians can use these parameters at admission as useful, early indicators of disease severity in pediatric pH1N1 infection.

The myelodysplastic syndromes (MDS) are a heterogeneous group of clonal hematopoietic stem cell disorders characterized by ineffective hematopoiesis, peripheral blood cytopenias, dysplasia and a propensity for transformation to acute myeloid leukemia (AML). MDS is frequently associated with epigenetic gene silencing via methylation of cytosine residues in gene regulatory regions, and DNA methyl-transferase 1 (DNMT1) inhibitors, such as 5'azacytidine and 5-aza-2'-deoxycytidine (decitabine, DAC), are two of the three agents that are FDA approved for treatment of MDS. Although these drugs are not curative, they induce hematological improvement or improved survival in a significant fraction of MDS patients. Two novel, thiol-substituted 2'-deoxycytidine (dCyd) analogs designated T-dCyd (4'-thio-2'-deoxycytidine) and Aza-T-dCyd (5-aza-4'-thio-2'-deoxycytidine) were synthesized and shown to be potent DNMT1 inhibitors in vitro. We evaluated these drugs in vivo using the NUP98-HOXD13 (NHD13) mouse model for MDS. To mimic human MDS hematopoiesis, in which a portion of the hematopoietic output is provided by the MDS clone, and a portion provided by normal, non-MDS cells, we transplanted wild-type (WT) mice with a mixture of WT murine hematopoietic cells and NHD13 (MDS) hematopoietic cells. This bone marrow transplant (BMT) produces chimaeric recipients with bone marrow comprised of hematopoietic cells derived from both the MDS clone as well as normal hematopoietic precursors. WT and MDS cells in the mice can be distinguished by differential CD45 alleles (CD45.1 and CD45.2, respectively), which enables analysis and purification of the MDS and WT cells; this feat is not easily achieved with human MDS patient samples, which lack cell surface antigens specific for the MDS clone. At 8 weeks post-transplant; engraftment of MDS cells was documented by the presence of CD45.2+ cells in the peripheral blood, and the starting CBCs showed signs consistent with MDS including peripheral blood cytopenia and macrocytosis. Mice were randomly assigned to one of the three groups. 1) PBS, 2) T-dCyd, 3) Aza-T-dCyd. T-Cyd was dosed at 4 mg/kg/d intraperitoneally (IP) on weekdays for 2 weeks (10 doses), followed by three weeks rest; this constituted one cycle of therapy. Aza-T-dCyd was administered on the same schedule at 4 mg/kg/d IP. Flow cytometry and CBC were assessed on day 21 of each cycle, and treatment continued for up to one year, or until mice were humanely euthanized due to tachypnea, lethargy, or other signs of AML. Between four and six mice were treated per group, and the entire experiment was repeated three times and results pooled for T-dCyd, once for Aza-T-dCyd. The T-dCyd treated chimaeric mice showed significantly enhanced overall survival associated with hematological improvement including hemoglobin concentration, platelet and absolute neutrophil count compared to PBS treated mice (median survival 45.4 vs 28 weeks, p=0.0187). In addition to a survival advantage, AML onset was significantly delayed in the T-dCyd treated mice (median time to AML transformation 35 weeks for PBS vs unreached for T-dCyd, p=0.0111), although there was no significant change in MDS (CD45.2) engraftment between the T-dCyd and PBS treated mice. For Aza-T-dCyd group, we did not detect a survival benefit nor hematologic improvement, although we suspect this may have been secondary to unexpected toxicity at the selected dose. In sum, these results demonstrate the utility of chimaeric WT/MDS mice as a pre-clinical model for human MDS, and show that treatment with T-dCyd, a new DNMT1 inhibitor, leads to a survival advantage, hematologic improvement, and delayed transformation to AML. The LH surge promotes terminal differentiation of follicular cells to become luteal cells. RUNX2 has been shown to play an important role in cell differentiation, but the regulation of Runx2 expression and its function in the ovary remain to be determined. The present study examined 1) the expression profile of Runx2 and its partner CBFbeta during the periovulatory period, 2) regulatory mechanisms of Runx2 expression, and 3) its potential function in the ovary. Runx2 expression was induced in periovulatory granulosa cells of human and rodent ovaries. RUNX2 and core binding factor-beta (CBFbeta) proteins in nuclear extracts and RUNX2 binding to a consensus binding sequence increased after human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) administration. This in vivo up-regulation of Runx2 expression was recapitulated in vitro in preovulatory granulosa cells by stimulation with hCG. The hCG-induced Runx2 expression was reduced by antiprogestin (RU486) and EGF-receptor tyrosine kinase inhibitor (AG1478), indicating the involvement of EGF-signaling and progesterone-mediated pathways. We also found that in the C/EBPbeta knockout mouse ovary, Runx2 expression was reduced, indicating C/EBPbeta-mediated expression. Next, the function of RUNX2 was investigated by suppressing Runx2 expression by small interfering RNA in vitro. Runx2 knockdown resulted in reduced levels of mRNA for Rgc32, Ptgds, Fabp6, Mmp13, and Abcb1a genes. Chromatin immunoprecipitation analysis demonstrated the binding of RUNX2 in the promoter region of these genes, suggesting that these genes are direct downstream targets of RUNX2. Collectively, the present data indicate that the LH surge-induced RUNX2 is involved in various aspects of luteal function by directly regulating the expression of diverse luteal genes.

= Abstract = Purpose : Staphylococcal scalded skin syndrome (SSSS) is a relatively uncommon superficial blistering skin disease that is due to Staphylococcus aureus. We had experienced a regional outbreak of SSSS over 3 years in healthy children. Methods : We retrospectively reviewed the medical records of those patients diagnosed as SSSS. Most of neonatal cases were nosocomial infections and excluded from the analysis. The clinical features, laboratory findings, the isolation and antibiotic resistance of S. aureus, the antibiotic management and other supportive treatments were analyzed. Results : Fifty-five patients with SSSS were admitted to our hospital from October 2001 to September 2004. The median age of patients was 3.0 years. Of the 55 patients, 9 were the generalized type, 13 were the intermediate type and 33 were the scarletiniform rash. All the patients were living in neighborhood of the Jinju area. S. aureus were isolated from 9 of the patients and all of the isolated S. aureus were methicillin resistant. All the patients except two were treated with intravenous flocloxacillin or nafcillin and/or cefotaxime. All the patients recovered during the follow-up period of 2 to 3 weeks. Conclusion : We experienced a regional outbreak of SSSS in previous healthy children. Further study for finding the carriers of S. aureus caused SSSS and preventing the spread of this disease is needed. Additionally, guidelines for treating SSSS due to methicillin resistant S. aureus should be established. (Korean J Pediatr 2010;53:48-55)

A 10-year-old spayed female Japanese domestic cat exhibited clinical symptoms suggesting pancreatitis. One month later the cat exhibited Horner's syndrome and was euthanized. At necropsy, multiple neoplastic masses were found in the intestines, spleen, kidneys, urinary bladder, and lungs. On cytology, many neoplastic lymphocytic cells had fine to large cytoplasmic granules, suggesting large granular lymphocyte (LGL) lymphoma. Histopathological examinations revealed infiltrative proliferation of the neoplastic cells in almost organs. Immunohistochemically, the neoplastic cells were intensely positive for CD3 and granzyme B. In the brain, there were multifocal white matter lesions characterized by diffuse myelin loss with mild infiltration of the neoplastic cells. Based on these findings, the cat was diagnosed as LGL lymphoma presumptively of intestinal origin with systemic involvement.

Previously, we demonstrated that Abl kinases are highly active in invasive breast cancer cell lines, and contribute to survival in response to nutrient deprivation, invasion and proliferation. To determine whether an Abl kinase inhibitor, STI571 (Gleevec; imatinib mesylate) sensitizes breast cancer cells to chemotherapeutic agents, we treated three breast cancer cell lines (BT-549, MDA-MB-231, and MDA-MB-468) that have active Abl kinases, with STI571 in combination with several conventional chemotherapeutic drugs frequently used to treat breast cancer, and assessed the effect on cell viability, proliferation, and apoptosis. We found that STI571 had synergistic effects with cisplatin in BT-549 and to some extent in MDA-MB-468 cells; synergized with camptothecin using an alternate dosing regimen in MDA-MB-231 cells; and STI571 synergistically sensitized MDA-MB-468 cells to paclitaxel and to high doses of 5-fluorouracil. Significantly, STI571 increased the ability of cisplatin to inhibit constitutive activation of PI3K/Akt in BT-549 cells, synergized with camptothecin to increase the stability of IκB in MDA-MB-231 cells, and in MDA-MB-468 cells, camptothecin and 5-fluorouracil inhibited STI571-dependent activation of STAT3. In other cell line/drug combinations, STI571 had additive or antagonistic effects, indicating that the ability of STI571 to sensitize breast cancer cells to chemotherapeutic agents is cell type-dependent. Significantly, unlike cisplatin, paclitaxel, and camptothecin, mechloroethamine was strongly antagonistic to STI571, and the effect was not cell line-dependent. Taken together, these data indicate that the cellular milieu governs the response of breast cancer cells to STI571/chemotherapeutic combination regimens, which suggests that treatment with these combinations requires individualization.

Reduction or disruption of the blood supply to the bone is involved in the pathogenesis of osteonecrosis of the femoral head (ONFH). An altered lipid metabolism is one of the major risk factors for ONFH. Sterol regulatory element binding protein, SREBF1 activates genes regulating lipid biosynthesis. The aim of this study was to examine the association between the polymorphisms of the SREBF1 gene and ONFH susceptibility in the Korean population. The SREBF1 gene in 24 unrelated Korean individuals was sequenced and two polymorphisms were detected. Two variants, IVS6 - 48 CT and IVS7 + 117 AG, were genotyped in 423 ONFH patients and 348 controls. The genotype frequency of IVS7 + 117 AG in ONFH patients was significantly different from that of the control group with P value0.0001 (Adjusted OR; 6.88, 95% CI; 3.74-12.67). Moreover, the IVS7 + 117 AG genotype showed an association with men, and further analysis stratified by etiological factors indicated that the genotype data was significantly associated with a high risk for patients with alcohol-induced ONFH (P0.0001). We found that the IVS7 + 117 AG polymorphism of the SREBF1 gene is associated with an increased risk of ONFH in the Korean population.

� Although acquired mutations in the GATA1 gene have been reported for Down syndrome-related acute megakaryoblastic leukemia (DS-AMKL) in Caucasians, this is the first report of a Korean Down syndrome patient with AMKL carrying a novel mutation of the GATA1 gene. A 3-yr-old Korean girl with Down syndrome was admitted to our hospital complaining of pallor and fever. The findings of a periph- eral blood smear and bone marrow study were compatible with the presence of AMKL. A chromosome study showed 48,XX,-7,+21c,+21,+r(3)/47,XX,+21c(17). Following GATA1 gene mutation analysis, a novel mutation, c.145dupG (p.Ala49Glyf- sX18), was identified in the N-terminal activation domain of the GATA1 gene. This mutation caused a premature termination at codon 67 and expression of an abnor- mal GATA-1 protein with a defective N-terminal activation domain, and the absence of full-length GATA-1 protein. This case demonstrates that a leukemogenic mech- anism for DS-AMKL is contributed by a unique collaboration between overexpressed genes from trisomy 21 and an acquired GATA1 mutation previously seen in Cau- casians and now in a Korean patient.

Response gene to complement 32 (Rgc32) has recently been suggested to be expressed in the ovary and regulated by RUNX1, a transcription factor in periovulatory follicles. In the present study, we determined the expression profile of the Rgc32 gene in the rodent ovary throughout the reproductive cycle and the regulatory mechanism(s) involved in Rgc32 expression during the periovulatory period. Northern blot and in situ hybridization analyses revealed the up-regulation of Rgc32 expression in periovulatory follicles. Rgc32 mRNA was also localized to newly forming corpora lutea (CL) and CL from previous estrous cycles. Further studies using hormonally induced luteal and luteolysis models revealed a transient increase in levels of Rgc32 mRNA at the time of functional regression of the CL. Next, the regulation of Rgc32 expression was investigated in vitro using rat preovulatory granulosa cells. The effect of human chorionic gonadotropin on Rgc32 expression was mimicked by forskolin, but not phorbol 12-myristate 13-acetate, and was mediated by the activation of progesterone receptors and the epidermal growth factor-signaling pathway. The mechanism by which RUNX1 regulates Rgc32 expression was investigated using chromatin immunoprecipitation and Rgc32 promoter-luciferase reporter assays. Data from these assays revealed direct binding of RUNX1 in the Rgc32 promoter region in vivo as well as the involvement of RUNX binding sites in the transactivation of the Rgc32 promoter in vitro. In summary, the present study demonstrated the spatial/temporal-specific expression of Rgc32 in the ovary, and provided evidence of LH-initiated and RUNX1-mediated expression of Rgc32 gene in luteinizing granulosa cells.

We have performed a study on the electrochemical and structural characteristics of CNFs-Si composites which are active anode material for lithium secondary batteries. Carbon nanofibers (CNFs) have been synthesized by Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) using Co and Cu catalysts. The CNFs on the surface of the Si particle can provide a flexible space to relieve the volumetric expansion during a charge. Therefore, the CNFs composites on Si particles were prepared on the basis of the following two processes: (1) CNFs were grown on the simple mechanical mixture of Si particles and catalysts (CNFs/Si); (2) CNFs were grown on the surface of a pyrolytic carbon that was coated with Si particles (CNFs/PC/Si). The morphology and composition of CNFs-Si composites were analyzed by SEM and EDS measurements. Crystallinity and amorphicity were investigated using XRD and Raman spectroscopy. The characteristics of the synthesized CNFs-Si composites were analyzed through XPS, TGA, and BET. The two different CNFs-Si composite materials were evaluated as the anodic material in three different electrode cells. We found that the initial capacity of the CNFs/PC/Si composite electrode was 1,361 mAh/g with retention rate of 28.4%, which was better than the retention rate of 4.9% with the CNFs/Si electrode.

Carbon nanofibers were synthesized on transition metal (Fe, Co, Cu) catalysts by Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD). The variations of thickness and surface of the fibers were investigated according to the concentration of the transition metal. In order to prepare the metal catalysts for synthesis, transition metal nitrate and copper nitrate at a weight ratio were dissolved in distilled water. The obtained catalyst precipitates were filtered and then dried for more than 24 hours at 110 degrees C. Carbon nanofibers were synthesized by using ethylene gas of carbon source by CVD after pulverization of the fully-dried catalyst precipitates. They were characterized by SEM, EDS, Raman, XRD, XPS and TG/DTA, and their specific surface area was measured by BET. The characteristics of the synthesized carbon nanofibers were greatly influenced by the concentration ratio of the metal catalysts. Especially, uniform carbon nanofibers grew when the concentration ratio of Fe and Cu was 7:3, and that of Co and Cu was 6:4. Carbon nanofibers synthesized under such concentration conditions had the best crystallizability, compared to carbon nanofibers synthesized with metal catalysts of different concentration ratios, and revealed high amorphicity as well as high specific surface area.

Pullulanase, an enzyme that catalyzes the hydrolysis of polysaccharides, has been identified in a broad range of organisms, including bacteria, yeasts, fungi, and animals. The pullulanase (pulB; FTT_0412c) of F. tularensis subspecies tularensis Schu S4 is considered to be a homologue of the type I pullulanase (pulA) of the other Francisella subspecies. The significance of Francisella pullulanase has been obscure until now. In the present study, we characterized a recombinant PulB of F. tularensis SCHU P9, which was expressed as a his-tagged protein in Escherichia coli. The recombinant PulB was confirmed to be a type I pullulanase by its enzymatic activity in vitro. A pulB gene knockout mutant of F. tularensis SCHU P9 (ΔpulB) was constructed using the TargeTron Knockout system and plasmid pKEK1140 to clarify the function of PulB during the growth of F. tularensis in macrophages. The intracellular growth of the ΔpulB mutant in murine macrophage J774.1 cells was significantly reduced compared with that of the parental strain SCHU P9. Expression of PulB in ΔpulB, using an expression plasmid, resulted in the complementation of the reduced growth in macrophages, suggesting that PulB is necessary for the efficient growth of F. tularensis in macrophages. To assess the role of PulB in virulence, the knockout and parent bacterial strains were used to infect C57BL/6J mice. Histopathological analyses showed that tissues from ΔpulB-infected mice showed milder lesions compared to those from SCHU P9-infected mice. However, all mice infected with SCHU P9 and ΔpulB showed the similar levels of bacterial loads in their tissues. The results suggest that PulB plays a significant role in bacterial growth within murine macrophage but does not contribute to bacterial virulence in vivo.

The present study investigated its inhibitory role in aflatoxin (AF) biosynthesis. Treating only AFB1- and B2-producing Aspergillus flavus with piperonal completely inhibited AFB1 production with high sclerotial formation, resulting in 20-fold higher AFG2 production. On the other hand, benzodioxole and eugenol suppressed AFB1 production without AFG formation, while methyleugenol showed potent inhibition of AFB1 production with slight production of AFG1. These results indicate that natural products may change aflatoxin biosynthesis, and highlight a novel regulation of AFG2 production by piperonal. It is the first report for chemical regulation on AFG2 production in non-AFG producing-aspergilli.

In this study, TiO2 nanofibers with a high aspect ratio and a large specific surface area were synthesized using the electrospinning technique, and the effect of calcination temperature on their crystal structure, diameter, specific surface area and photocatalytic activity was systematically investigated. The electrospun, as-prepared PVP/TTIP nanofibers were several tens of micrometers in length with a diameter of 74 nm. TiO2 nanofibers with an average diameter of 50 nm were prepared after calcination at various temperatures. The calcination temperature significantly influenced the photocatalytic and material properties of TiO2 including grain size and specific surface area. When compared to other nanostructured TiO2 materials, such as commercial TiO2 nanoparticles (P25, Degussa), the TiO2 nanofibers exhibited greater photocatalytic activity for the degradation of acetaldehyde and ammonia.

HERV-M (human endogenous retrovirus M), related to the super family of HERV-K, has a methionine (M) tRNA primer-binding site, and is located within the periphilin gene on human chromosome 12q12. HERV-M has been integrated into the periphilin gene as the truncated form, 5'LTR-gag-pol-3'LTR. Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) approaches were conducted to investigate its evolutionary origins. Interestingly, the insertion of retroelements in a common ancestor genome can make different transcript variants in different species. In the case of the periphilin gene, human (10 variants) and mouse (2 variants) lineages show different transcript variants. Insertion of HERV-M (variant 1-3) could affect the protein-coding region. Also, Alusq/x (variant 4-9) and L1ME4a (mammalian-wide subfamilies of LINE-1) (variant 10) in humans and SINE (short interspersed repetitive element) and RLTR15 (the mouse putative long terminal repeat) (variant 2) in mice could be driving forces in transcript diversification of the periphilin gene during mammalian evolution. The HERV-M derived transcripts (variant 1-3) were expressed in different human tissues, whereas they were not detected in crab-eating monkey and squirrel monkey tissues by RT-PCR amplification. Taken together, HERV-M seems to have been integrated into our common ancestor genome after the divergence of simians and prosimians, and then was actively expressed during hominoid evolution.

Background Hyperuricemia accompanying tumor lysis syndrome is a serious complication in neoplasia with rapid proliferation and destruction. To confirm the efficacy of recombinant urate oxidase (rasburicase) and its safety profile, a phase IV compassionate use prospective study was performed in Korean pediatric patients with hematologic malignancies. Procedure Rasburicase was administered at 0.2 mg/kg/day once daily for 3–5 days (twice daily allowed during the first 72 hr) by intravenous route for hyperuricemia (uric acid > 7.5 mg/dl). The study period was 5 weeks and consisted of a baseline assessment within 48 hr before the administration of rasburicase, 3–5 days of assessment during treatment and a follow-up assessment at 4 weeks after its final administration. It has been suggested that epigenetic regulation plays an important role in maintaining the stemness and lineage differentiation of hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs), 5-aza-deoxycytidine (aza-D) and Trichostatin A (TSA) being candidate additives for HSC ex vivo expansion. Although they have potent activity to maintain the stemness, they can also cause serious cell death. This study examined the effects of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) on the maintenance of CD34+ cells driven by aza-D and TSA in culture with the combined cytokines of thrombopoietin, flt-3 ligand, stem cell factor, interleukin-3, and interleukin-6. In cultures without MSCs, although aza-D and TSA retained the CD34 frequency 4 to 8 times more than in the cytokines alone, a large portion of cells underwent apoptotic cell death. Consequently, CD34+ cell expansion could not be achieved in any condition without MSCs. In cultures with MSCs, the total cell number was higher in aza-D or TSA than in any conditions in the cultures without MSCs. The CD34 frequency was also similar to the level in the cultures in aza-D or TSA without the MSCs. These results suggest that a co-culture of CD34+ cells with the MSCs might not simply deliver the proliferation signals but also stemness and survival signals, and overlap the action of epigenetic regulators.

Aminocyclopentadienyl ruthenium complexes, which can be used as room-temperature racemization catalysts with lipases in the dynamic kinetic resolution (DKR) of secondary alcohols, were synthesized from cyclopenta-2,4-dienimines, Ru(3)(CO)(12), and CHCl(3): [2,3,4,5-Ph(4)(eta(5)-C(4)CNHR)]Ru(CO)(2)Cl (4: R = i-Pr; 5: R = n-Pr; 6: R = t-Bu), [2,5-Me(2)-3,4-Ph(2)(eta(5)-C(4)CNHR)]Ru(CO)(2)Cl (7: R = i-Pr; 8: R = Ph), and [2,3,4,5-Ph(4)(eta(5)-C(4)CNHAr)]Ru(CO)(2)Cl (9: Ar = p-NO(2)C(6)H(4); 10: Ar = p-ClC(6)H(4); 11: Ar = Ph; 12: Ar = p-OMeC(6)H(4); 13: Ar = p-NMe(2)C(6)H(4)). The tests in the racemization of (S)-4-phenyl-2-butanol showed that 7 is the most active catalyst, although the difference decreased in the DKR. Complex 4 was used in the DKR of various alcohols; at room temperature, not only simple alcohols but also functionalized ones such as allylic alcohols, alkynyl alcohols, diols, hydroxyl esters, and chlorohydrins were successfully transformed to chiral acetates. In mechanistic studies for the catalytic racemization, ruthenium hydride 14 appeared to be a key species. It was the major organometallic species in the racemization of (S)-1-phenylethanol with 4 and potassium tert-butoxide. In a separate experiment, (S)-1-phenylethanol was racemized catalytically by 14 in the presence of acetophenone.

We report the case of a 12-year-old girl who had mild encephalopathy with a reversible splenial lesion (MERS) associated with acutepyelonephritis caused by Escherichia coli. The patient was admitted with a high fever, and she was diagnosed with acute pyelonephritis based on pyuria and the results of urine culture, which detected cefotaxime-sensitive E. coli. Although intravenous cefotaxime and tobramycin were administered, her fever persisted and her C-reactive protein level increased to 307 mg/L. On day 3 of admission, she demonstrated abnormal neuropsychiatric symptoms, such as delirium, ataxia, and word salad. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain performed on day 4 showed marked hyperintensities in the bilateral corpus callosum and deep white matter on diffusion-weighted images, with corresponding diffusion restriction on apparent diffusion coefficient mapping. No abnormalities or pathogens were detected in the cerebrospinal fluid; however, lipopolysaccharides (LPS, endotoxin) were detected in plasma (41.6 pg/mL), associated with acute neurological deterioration. Her clinical condition gradually improved, and no neurological abnormalities were observed on day 6. Follow-up brain MRI performed 2 weeks later showed near-disappearance of the previously noted hyperintense lesions. In this patient, we first proved endotoxemia in a setting of MERS. The release of LPS following antibiotic administration might be related to the development of MERS in this patient. The possibility of MERS should be considered in patients who present with acute pyelonephritis and demonstrate delirious behavior.

Pesticidal activities of 4-[5-(2-cyclopropylaminopyrimidin-4-yl)-4-(4-chloro-2-fluoro-phenyl)thiazol-2-yl]-1-methylpiperidine, designated as Comp I, have been determined against a mosquito larva,Culex pipiens pallens, and a phytopathogenic fungus,Phytophthora capsici. Comp I was used as the leading compound in this study. The compounds were synthesized by reacting them with two functional groups, 3-thiophenyl and 2-thiophenyl groups, instead of 4-chloro-2-fluorophenyl group in Comp I. Other functional groups such as 2-aminothiazole, 2-(1-methylpiperazin-4-yl)thiazole, and 2-(piperazin-4-yl)thiazole were also introduced instead of 2-methylpiperidin-4-yl-thiazole of Comp I. Compounds designated as XIII-6~XV-7 were newly synthesized and their structures were confirmed by1H- and13C-NMR spectroscopy. Mosquito larvicidal activities of all the synthesized compounds againstC. pipiens pallenswere examined and Comp I among them showed the strongest larvicidal activity as 0.513 mM of LC50value. The fungicidal activities of all the synthesized compounds againstP. capsiciwere examined using the whole plant method. Among the XIII-6~XV-7 chemicals, 5-(2-cyclopropylaminopyrimidin-4-yl)-4-(thiophen-2-yl)thiazol-2-amine (VIII-6) showed the most potent antifungal activityin vivo. While the EC50value of the commercial fungicide dimethomorph was 4.26 μM, EC50of VIII-6 was 0.94 μM. Therefore, thiazole derivatives can be considered as viable candidates for the control of mosquito larvae and plant diseases.

Oncogenic fusion genes have been identified in a large number of hematologic malignancies. We previously generated mice that expressed either a NUP98-PHF23 (NP23) or NUP98-HOXD13 (NHD13) fusion in the hematopoietic compartment. Both NP23 and NHD13 mice develop a wide variety of leukemias, including myeloid, erythroid, megakaryocytic and lymphoid, at 9-14 months of age. NP23-NHD13 double transgenic mice were generated by interbreeding NP23 and NHD13 mice. Surprisingly, 100% of the NP23-NHD13 double transgenic mice showed rapid onset of acute myeloid leukemia (AML) within 3 months. The leukemias were characterized by extraordinarily high WBC and replacement of the thymus with Mac1+/Gr1+ myeloblasts; the percent of malignant myeloid cells in the thymus was often higher than the bone marrow (BM). It led to the intriguing hypothesis that the AML generated in NP23-NHD13 mice arose in the thymus, as opposed to the BM. We transplanted unfractionated cells from the thymus of a NP23-NHD13 mouse, invaded by Mac1+/Gr1+ AML cells or residual CD4-/CD8- double negative (DN) thymocytes into sub-lethally irradiated recipients. All mice (transplanted with either unfractionated leukemic cells or DN cells from same leukemic mouse) developed Mac1+/Gr1+ AML within 26 days, indicating that the AML was aggressive and transplantable, and could be transmitted by DN thymocytes. The observation that the AML was transmitted by the DN thymocytes or Mac1+/Gr1+ AML suggested that the DN thymocytes may be the cell of origin for this AML. To rule out the possibility that the leukemia in this experiment was transmitted by rare, contaminant Mac1+/Gr1+ cells, we repeated the experiment, twice, using DN thymocytes from 4-5 wk old mice with no signs of leukemia. DN thymocytes again transmitted a Mac1+/Gr1+ AML. We further fractioned DN thymocytes into DN1, DN2, DN3 and DN4 populations; the recipients of DN1 and DN2 populations developed a Mac1+/Gr1+ AML, but DN3 and DN4 recipients were healthy with no signs of engraftment in the peripheral blood. DN thymocytes from non-leukemic NP23-NHD13 mice were cultured on an OP9 stromal layer, which has been shown to support myeloid differentiation in vitro. DN thymocytes from non-leukemic NP23-NHD13 mice cultured on a OP9 stromal layer showed a markedly enhanced ability to differentiate into Mac1+/Gr1+ myeloid lineage cells compared to WT (56% vs 1.4 % at day 10). The NP23-NHD13 cells lost expression of Mac1 and Gr1 after 26 days; with immunophenotype now CD4-, CD8-, CD25-, CD44+, Thy-1.2+ and cKit+, consistent with a self-renewing DN1 thymocyte. These cells were transplanted; all recipients were anemic, and demonstrated engraftment of NP23-NHD13 myeloid cells as well as a less prominent (7.85%-38.5%) population of CD71+/Ter119+ erythroid cells in the BM and spleen. Taken together, these results indicate that NP23-NHD13 thymic progenitors are potently leukemogenic, and retain myeloid and erythroid differentiation potential. Objective: To report a consecutive series of neonates with seizures or apnea and displaying white matter injuries with distinctive magnetic resonance diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) pattern, and to discuss the high positive rate of rotavirus infection seen in these patients. Methods: In a retrospective review of neonates who were admitted to a tertiary referral center with seizures or apnea, we found a distinctive pattern of white matter injury (symmetrical restricted diffusion in the periventricular white matter and white matter tracts including the corpus callosum) in 18 patients. We describe the clinical and laboratory features of these 18 neonates. Additional PCR analyses for rotaviruses and parechoviruses were performed on banked frozen samples of CSF of 4 patients and blood of 15 patients. Results: All 18 patients were born at term and healthy until symptoms occurred 4–7 days after birth. No history of asphyxia was observed. Only 1 patient presented with fever, and no patient showed a rash. All patients except 1 (94.4%) were rotavirus-positive in stool samples. However, neither rotaviruses nor enteroviruses/parechoviruses were detected in the CSF and blood. Tissue loss was observed in 5 of 8 subjects on repeat MRI scans. Conclusions: Neonates with this distinctive DWI pattern had a high positive rate of rotavirus infection, without evidence of other pathogens, and were characterized as term newborns with neurologic symptoms arising approximately the fifth day after birth. Although the specificity of this pattern is unclear, rotavirus testing should be considered for neonates presenting with this DWI pattern.

Ubiquitination has been emerged as a key regulatory mechanism in the NF-κB pathway, in which the different types of ubiquitin chains are involved in the discrete steps. Given that the ubiquitin conjugating enzymes (E2s) are key enzymes to determine the chain topologies during ubiquitination, we tried to systematically screen out the E2s required for the IMD pathway in Drosophila, which is very similar to TNF-α mediated NF-κB pathway in mammals, via RNAi-mediated knockdown of individual E2 using GAL4/UAS system. DDX4 (DEAD box polypeptide 4), characterized by the conserved motif Asp-Glu-Ala-Asp (DEAD), is an RNA helicase which is implicated in various cellular processes involving the alteration of RNA secondary structure, such as translation initiation, nuclear and mitochondrial splicing, and ribosome and spliceosome assembly. DDX4 is known to be a germ cell-specific protein and is used as a sorting marker of germline stem cells for the production of oocytes. A recent report about DDX4 in ovarian cancer showed that DDX4 is overexpressed in epithelial ovarian cancer and disrupts a DNA damage-induced G2 checkpoint. We investigated the relationship between DDX4 and ovarian cancer stem cells by analyzing the expression patterns of DDX4 and the cancer stem cell marker CD133 in ovarian cancers via tissue microarray. Both DDX4 and CD133 were significantly increased in ovarian cancer compared to benign tumors, and showed similar patterns of expression. In addition, DDX4 and CD133 were mostly colocalized in various types of ovarian cancer tissues. Furthermore, almost all CD133 positive ovarian cancer cells also express DDX4 whereas CD133-negative cells did not possess DDX4, suggesting a strong possibility that DDX4 plays an important role in cancer stem cells, and/or can be used as an ovarian cancer stem cell marker.

A male infant aged 3 months and 1 week had persistently high fever with parotitis that was unresponsive to antibiotics. Mumps was identified by serologic study, but he was finally diagnosed by clinical features as having Kawasaki disease and echocardiographic findings on the 9th day of fever. Parotitis, which is unresponsive to antibiotics, should be considered Kawasaki disease even though typical symptoms are not present.

The changing patterns in seroprevalence rates of hepatitis A virus antibodies among children and adolescents from 1988 to 1997 reflect the cohort effects that occurred over 10 years in South Korea. Our results suggest that the majority of adolescents and young adults are at risk of symptomatic hepatitis A virus infection and morbidity.

Rice soup is a traditional Korean food administered to control diarrhea. Useful for short-term control of diarrhea, chronic consumption of this soup can cause problems. We treated an infant who visited our hospital for symptoms of lethargy due to hypoelectrolytemia, which developed from the continuous consumption of rice soup (the upper part of rice ground in water) mixed with a spoonful of milk over a 2-month period to control frequent diarrhea. The case is reported here, together with a brief review of the literature.
