Abstract

Objetivo: Determinar las variables asociadas al sedentarismo en jóvenes estudiantes de un instituto público de educación superior en Lima, Perú. Materiales y métodos: Estudio observacional, transversal, analítico, retrospectivo. Los datos fueron tomados de las fichas de evaluación médica y registros académicos de los estudiantes. La muestra estuvo conformada por 187 estudiantes de educación superior, se exploró las variables edad, sexo, peso, talla, perímetro abdominal, ciclo académico de estudios, rendimiento académico y programa académico. La evaluación médica anual en los estudiantes incluyó el desarrollo del cuestionario International Physical Activity Questionnaire (IPAQ). Para la identificación de las variables asociadas al sedentarismo se usó la prueba de Chi-Cuadrado. Se aceptó un nivel de significancia del 95 % (p=600 EMT/semana). El estado nutricional sobrepeso/obesidad y el rendimiento académico moderado estuvieron significativamente asociadas al sedentarismo Objective: To determine the variables associated with sedentary lifestyle in young students of a public institution of higher education in Lima-Peru. Materials and methods: An observational, cross-sectional, analytical, retrospective study. Data was collected from the students’ medical evaluation form and academic records. The sample consisted of 187 higher education students. Variables such as age, sex, weight, height, abdominal perimeter, academic term, academic performance and academic program were assessed. Abstract

International audience; We report the preparation of single-crystal silicon nanoparticles with 15 to 22 nm diameter from calcium disilicide (CaSi2) by redox assisted chemical exfoliation using solution phase synthesis route. Silicon nanoparticles are found to be highly oriented with a predominant size of 18 nm. X-Ray diffraction, as well as transmission electron microscopy studies, confirm that the silicon nanoparticles are a diamond type and highly crystalline.

107. Resiliencia y felicidad de adolescentes frente a la marginación urbana en México

Abstract

La marginación urbana en México ha crecido enormemente en los últimos años afectando directamente a los jóvenes. En este estudio empírico se analizó su efecto sobre la resiliencia y felicidad juvenil en función de factores estructurales. Se aplicó el Cuestionario RESI–M y la Escala de Felicidad de un ítem, a 1201 estudiantes mexicanos de secundaria y bachillerato. Los resultados mostraron que la marginación afecta de forma diferenciada las dimensiones de la resiliencia. Además, dentro de los grupos por grado de marginación, hubo diferencias significativas en la resiliencia según sexo, escolaridad y tipo de familia. Los análisis de regresión lineal mostraron el valor predictivo de algunos de los factores estructurales. Se observó cómo las condiciones de vida marginales afectan la capacidad de resiliencia de los adolescentes, aunque no la predicen dado que el individuo puede transformarse a sí mismo y a su realidad adversa ya que la felicidad no se asocia a las condiciones del contexto, excepto en relación a la edad y la familia. Se analiza la influencia diferenciada de los tipos de familias en relación a la marginación y su papel en el desarrollo de la resiliencia para afrontar los retos futuros y evitar el desajuste social. Se aportan elementos para profundiza el estudio de los adolescentes en marginación urbana.

109. Randomized controlled trial of chest physiotherapy in infants with viral acute bronchiolitis

Abstract

Background: Bronchiolitis is the main cause of hospital admission of under one-year-old infants in Chile, however, there is no specific treatment recommended for this disease. Chest physiotherapy (CPT) can improve mucociliary clearance and reduce airways obstruction, therefore, we aimed to determine the effect of CPT in infants with acute bronchiolitis admmitted to a hospital in Santiago, Chile. Methods: previously healthy infants with respiratory syncytial virus acute bronchiolitis were randomly allocated to two groups: prolonged slow expiration and provoked coughing (PSE+PC) or manual chest wall vibrations (MVC). Primary outcome was severity of bronchiolitis score (Wang respiratory score) at 36 hours. Probability of moderade respiratory distress at 36 hours, time to discharge and time to withdrawal of supplementary oxygen were also analyzed. Results: 204 infants were recruited and completed the trial with 100 infants receiving PSE+PC. A multilevel analysis showed that at 36 hours, the Wang respiratory score was 0.57 (95% CI 0.19-0.94) points lower for PSE+PC group compared to MVC group (p=0.003). Additionally, PSE+PC group was less likely to have a moderate respiratory distress score at 36 hours (RR:0.71[IC 95% 0.53-0.95]). Median length of hospital stay was 4 (3-6.5) days for PSE+PC and 4 (3-6) days for MCV (p=0.2). Using survival analysis, no differences were found in time to withdrawal of supplementary oxigen (HR:0.93 [IC 95% 0.70-1.23]) or probability of reaching a Wang respiratory score of 4 or lower (HR:1.16 [0.9-1.5]). Conclusions: Both groups improved severity score, but PSE+PC seems to reduce more respiratory distress at 36 hours after admissin compared with MVC.

Abstract

Durant les premiers temps de la métallurgie du fer en Europe occidentale, le type de demi-produit le plus répandu est de forme bipyramidée. Bien que plus d'un millier de pièces soit connu, leurs conditions de fabrication et de circulation et même leur datation restent mal appréhendées Une approche interdisciplinaire a ainsi été appliquée au dépôt de demi-produits bipyramidés de Durrenentzen (Haut-Rhin), le troisième en Europe par son importance numérique, afin de reconstituer le contexte technologique, social et économique qui a conduit à son abandon. L’étude morphométrique des cinquante-et-un bipyramidés révèle une grande homogénéité globale du lot malgré des variations de détail. Quatre objets ont été sélectionnés pour études archéométriques. Les analyses métallographiques mettent en évidence des différences internes significatives en ce qui concerne la qualité des matériaux, la nature de l’alliage et les techniques de fabrication. Les analyses chimiques révèlent également des signatures différenciées. Enfin, des analyses radiocarbones réalisées sur le carbone contenu dans les aciers permettent de rattacher ce lot au premier âge du Fer. Les résultats de l’étude de ce dépôt exceptionnel permettent ainsi d’implanter le premier jalon d’une analyse plus générale modifiant significativement la perception de l’économie du fer au premier âge de Fer. During the early stages of the iron metallurgy in Western Europe, the most wide-spread type of semi-product is of bipyramidal shape. Even if their occurrence is frequent their conditions of manufacturing and of circulation and even their dating remain poorly known. Thus an interdisciplinary approach was applied to the Durrenentzen deposit (Haut-Rhin) – the third in Europe by its numerical importance – in order to reconstitute the technological, social and economic context which led to its abandonment. The morphometrical study of fifty one bipyramidal semi-products reveals a large overall homogeneity of the set in spite of detail variations. Four objects were selected for archaeometrical studies. The metallographic analyses highlight significant internal differences regarding the quality of the materials, the nature of the alloy and the manufacturing techniques. The chemical analyses also reveal differentiated chemical signatures. Radiocarbon analyses realized on the carbon contained in steel allow finally to connect this deposit to the first Iron Age. Results about this exceptional deposit allow to implant the first milestone of a more general analysis modifying significantly the perception of the iron economy during the first Iron Age.

Abstract

Sustainability of cities and the environmental implications of high resource utilization by the domestic sector are growing concerns related to urban regions. Well-informed urban planning decision-making is an essential tool to help in the task and, for that, an important point to consider is the influence of parameters like residential density and housing typology on the intensity of resource utilization. Emergy synthesis, a life-cycle energy analysis methodological approach that considers the interaction of natural and human-made flows, was used to evaluate the environmental support for dwelling operational stage in five typical present-day housing units on the island of Montreal. As expected, resource utilization, measured as total emergy used, was positively correlated to housing unit size both with respect to number of occupants and dwelling size. Results suggest that variables affecting notably the intensity of resource utilization are per household income and per dweller habitable space and, while a higher income increased per capita emergy in all cases, increasing space availability per resident did not result in a decrease of empower density after 50 m2/person. Future work should consider lower and higher densities and analyses at the scale of blocks, neighborhoods and urban planning zones.

Abstract

International audience; The Canigou mountain along with the “Pyrénées-Orientales” and the “Ariège” (France) are famous for the direct iron process. In this area, this technique has been maintained until 19th c. in hydraulic powered systems named as “moulines” in the end of the Middle Age and “forge à la catalane” in the Modern Period. The origin of the direct iron production takes place likely in the Roman republic period, when the Romans have beginning to conquer and annexe the southern reaches of the Gaul.Since 2014 in the “Pyrénées-Orientales”, an archaeological survey program carries on an inventory of all the Antiquity, Middle Age and Modern Period iron smelting sites. The aim of such an inventory is the diachronic understanding of the ironmaking technical processes. Slags, as they are the prominent waste stemming from an ironmaking activity, hold chemical information potentially related to the iron reduction system. In addition to the possibility to assess the iron production (quality, quantity), the variation of chemical “signatures” as function of space and time would provide information about changes and “recipes”. By the way, technic evolution such as the transition between natural or manual ventilation and hydraulic power can be investigate. In 2016, 140 sites of tap slag heap have been discovered around the Canigou mountain. They constitute around 700000m3 of tap slag. 95% of this are dated from the roman antiquity. Hence, the Canigou mountain seem to be one of the most famous region of iron production in the south ofGaul between the Roman Republic to the early Roman Empire. In this corpus, 24 iron production site have been studies through slag pXRF in situ analysis. 784 tap slag analysis have been done on 10 roman sites, 1 Middle Age sites, 5 modern Period sites and 8 sites no-dated. From this first chemical analysis prospection, we are able to distinguish several groups of chemical composition according to geography and chronology.

Abstract

Voltage-gated calcium channels are key regulators of brain function, and their dysfunction has been associated with multiple conditions and neurodegenerative diseases because they couple membrane depolarization to the influx of calcium—and other processes such as gene expression—in excitable cells. L-type calcium channels, one of the three major classes and probably the best characterized of the voltage-gated calcium channels, act as an essential calcium binding proteins with a significant biological relevance. It is well known that estradiol can activate rapidly brain signaling pathways and modulatory/regulatory proteins through non-genomic (or non-transcriptional) mechanisms, which lead to an increase of intracellular calcium that activate multiple kinases and signaling cascades, in the same way as L-type calcium channels responses. In this context, estrogens—L-type calcium channels signaling raises intracellular calcium levels and activates the same signaling cascades in the brain probably through estrogen receptor-independent modulatory mechanisms. In this review, we discuss the available literature on this area, which seems to suggest that estradiol exerts dual effects/modulation on these channels in a concentration-dependent manner (as a potentiator of these channels in pM concentrations and as an inhibitor in nM concentrations). Indeed, estradiol may orchestrate multiple neurotrophic responses, which open a new avenue for the development of novel estrogen-based therapies to alleviate different neuropathologies. We also highlight that it is essential to determine through computational and/or experimental approaches the interaction between estradiol and L-type calcium channels to assist these developments, which is an interesting area of research that deserves a closer look in future biomedical research., This work was in part funded by PUJ grants #5544 and 5608 to GEB, and #6243, 5619 and 6371 to JG.

UNLABELLED Postinfectious bronchiolitis obliterans (PIBO) is an infrequent chronic lung that causes irreversible obstruction and, or, obliteration of the smaller airways. This review particularly focuses on more than 30 studies from South America. CONCLUSION The initial PIBO event occurs in the early years of life and is strongly associated with adenovirus infection and the need for mechanical ventilator support. Treatment requires a multidisciplinary strategy. Multicentre studies are needed to determine progression, optimal management and long-term follow-up.

Abstract

National indicators point that 85% of Mexico’s energy production come from fossil fuels. Quintana Roo is the state with the most significant increase on energy consumption with almost 20% from 2010 to 2017. This project carries out a holistic energy analysis approach in three case studies in typical dwellings built with average materials and construction systems under tropical climate conditions. Two validation levels were performed, one with an historical weather data file, and the second one with a costumed weather file corresponding to February 2019. The obtained values of mean bias error on an hourly-based analysis in interior conditions varied with the following ranges: level 1, from 1.57% to 2.11%; in level 2, from 1.17% to 1.74%. On the other hand, it was also found that the first level of simulation predicted the electricity consumption slightly closer to actual values reported for February 2019, with values ranging from 7.56% to 16.63%. However, further analysis with more detailed input data and monitoring of daily consumption is recommended in order to reduce the variation ranges.

Abstract

Caribbean countries are experiencing social, epidemiological, and demographic transitions shaped by the growing elderly population and the rise of noncommunicable diseases (NCDs)-now responsible for 78% of all deaths. These circumstances demand rethinking the model of care to improve health outcomes and build more sustainable health systems with new orientations in policy, service delivery, organization, training, technology, and financing. Policy must be aimed towards healthy living, leveraging interventions that ensure healthy aging. The health system must proactively structure interventions to reduce the incidence of new NCD cases and to prevent related complications. Interventions should be focused on optimizing the individual's capacity, functional ability, and autonomy within adapted environments, as well as with the necessary preventive, long-term care, self-care, community care, and health system support.Los países del Caribe están experimentando transiciones sociales, epidemiológicas y demográficas como resultado del envejecimiento de la población y el aumento de la prevalencia de las enfermedades no transmisibles (ENT), que en la actualidad causan el 78% de todas las defunciones. Estas circunstancias exigen replantear el modelo de atención para mejorar los resultados de salud y establecer sistemas de salud más sostenibles mediante nuevos enfoques en políticas, prestación de servicios, organización, capacitación, tecnología y financiamiento. Las políticas deben tener como propósito procurar una vida saludable, aprovechando las intervenciones que garanticen el envejecimiento saludable. El sistema de salud debe ser proactivo, estructurando las intervenciones para reducir la incidencia de nuevos casos de ENT y para prevenir las complicaciones relacionadas. Las intervenciones deben centrarse en optimizar la capacidad funcional, la autonomía y el desenvolvimiento general de la persona dentro de un entorno adaptado y con el apoyo necesario del sistema de salud en materia de atención preventiva, cuidados a largo plazo, de autocuidado y de atención en la comunidad.Os países do Caribe estão passando por transições sociais, epidemiológicas e demográficas configuradas pela população de idosos cada vez maior e a ascensão das doenças não transmissíveis (DNTs), já responsáveis por 78% de todas as mortes. Essas circunstâncias exigem repensar o modelo de atenção para melhorar os desfechos de saúde e construir sistemas de saúde mais sustentáveis, com novas orientações de política, prestação de serviços, organização, treinamento, tecnologia e financiamento. As políticas devem ser orientadas para a vida saudável, alavancando intervenções que asseguram o envelhecimento saudável. O sistema de saúde deve estruturar proativamente intervenções para reduzir a incidência de novos casos de DNT e a prevenir as complicações relacionadas. As intervenções devem se concentrar na otimização da capacidade do indivíduo, das habilidades funcionais e da autonomia dentro de ambientes adaptados, e também nas ações preventivas a para assistência de longa duração, no autocuidado, na atenção na comunidade e no apoio pelos sistemas de saúde.

119. Genetic structure and essential oil diversity of the aromatic shrub Lippia origanoides Kunth (Verbenaceae) in two populations from northern Colombia

Abstract

In the present study, the diversity in essential oil composition and genetic structure of two populations of Lippia origanoides from Colombia, one from the department of Magdalena on the Atlantic coast in the north, and the other from the canyon of the Chicamocha river in the northeast, were compared. Individuals were sampled in each of the two populations and ISSR (inter-simple sequence repeat) molecular markers were applied to document the distribution of the genetic diversity within and among the populations. Essential oils were extracted by steam distillation from individuals collected in the two populations and analyzed by gas chromatography and mass spectrometry (GC-MS). The results suggest that genetic diversity levels of L. origanoides in Magdalena and Chicamocha are relatively high (Hs ranged from 0.35 to 0.37) and comparable to allogamous plant species and other related species of the same genus. A rather low genetic differentiation (qII varied from 0.07 to 0.17) was found between the two populations, in spite of the relatively large geographical distance between them. The essential oils of L. origanoides can be classified as monoterpenic in type, and according to the relative amount of the major compounds, six chemotypes are proposed. Five of them (B, C, D, F and G) are present in the canyon of the Chicamocha river, while two of them (C and E) are present in Magdalena. Chemotypes B and C are similar to chemotypes previously reported. In summary, the essential oils from individuals collected in Chicamocha are rich in thymol (chemotypes C and D); carvacrol (chemotype B); Ρcymene, eucalyptol (+ Β-phellandrene trace) and thymol methyl ether (chemotype F); and thymol methyl ether, pcymene, thymol and Υ-terpinene (chemotype G); while those from Magdalena are rich in thymol (chemotype C), and eucalyptol and α-phellandrene (chemotype E). These results suggest a significant presence of genetic and essential oil diversity in this species, which should be studied further in order to make more efficient use of this promising plant resource

Abstract

Myanmar has been notably underrepresented in recent studies of archaeometallurgy in Southeast Asia, despite its richness in both mineral and cultural resources and its potentially central role in long-distance exchange networks linking India, China and peninsular neighbours. Here, we present original analytical data on copper-base artefacts from several Bronze Age and Iron Age sites in Myanmar. Observed microstructures range from as-cast, worked, to fully annealed; compositions include leaded copper, low-tin to high-tin bronzes, and arsenical copper/bronze. Lead isotope analyses indicate that the metal originates from different geological sources, including several that match the lead isotope signatures of known prehistoric copper mines in Thailand and Laos. These archaeometallurgical data, including evidence for secondary copper-base production, more than double those currently available for Myanmar and document the presence of multiple local alloying and working traditions, perhaps chronologically differentiated, as well as identifying possible links to primary mineral sources across the region. Overall, this adds significant new information to the emerging picture of Southeast Asian prehistoric metallurgy at the crossroads of several major ancient cultures.

Abstract

The measurement deviations of cup anemometers are studied by analyzing the rotational speed of the rotor at steady state (constant wind speed). The differences of the measured rotational speed with respect to the averaged one based on complete turns of the rotor are produced by the harmonic terms of the rotational speed. Cup anemometer sampling periods include a certain number of complete turns of the rotor, plus one incomplete turn, the residuals from the harmonic terms integration within that incomplete turn (as part of the averaging process) being responsible for the mentioned deviations. The errors on the rotational speed due to the harmonic terms are studied analytically and then experimentally, with data from more than 500 calibrations performed on commercial anemometers.

Se presenta un conjunto de medidas, ejecutadas, en el central "Cristino Naranjo Vázquez", en el período de zafras desde 1998 hasta 2002, lográndose una disminución del índice de consumo de agua por caña molida desde 1,21 hasta 0,30 kg agua / kg caña. Se logra la reducción del costo de producción de cada 1 000 kg de azúcar en $ 2.00 MN y se contribuye a la conservación del medio ambiente por reducción de tala de árboles como combustible adicional, menor consumo de aguas subterráneas en 524 643,29 m3, volumen que a su vez no se vierte como residual líquido, por lo que se evita la contaminación de la cuenca del río Cauto.

Abstract

High resource utilization in the residential sector, and the associated environmental impacts, are central issues in the growth of urban regions. Land-use urban planning is a primary instrument for the proper development of cities, an important point is the consideration of the urban form’s influence on resource utilization intensity. Emergy synthesis, an energy-based methodological approach that allows the quantification and integration of both natural and human-generated flows interacting in urban environments, was used to assess sustainability of the residential land use of seven boroughs on the Island of Montreal. Natural resources, food, water, acquired goods and services, electricity and fuels were the main flows considered in the analysis. Results suggest that income, household size and distance to downtown are the variables affecting resource utilization intensity more noticeably and that allocation of green area coverage is an important parameter for controlling land use intensity. With the procedure used for calculating resource use intensity in the seven boroughs, it is possible to generate a tool to support urban planning decision-making for assessing sustainable development scenarios. Future research should consider urban green space potential for accommodating local waste treatment systems, acting as a greenhouse gas emissions sink and promoting human health.

Abstract

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the leading cause of death and disability in young and adult people. Since TBI is a lesion characterized by its heterogeneity and complexity, many clinical and pharmacological approaches have been unsuccessful. The current understanding of the physiopathology of TBI indicates that it is imperative to focus on a multifactorial therapy. Endogenous hormones have pleiotropic neuroprotective effects that can be used for a therapeutic approach in TBI. However, these neurosteroids have secondary effects depending on the target tissue. In this concern, the development of more specific estrogenic-progestogenic-androgenic like compounds and the advances in elucidating their protective role in TBI has led to the use of SERMs and STEARs. In vitro and in vivo models have shown promising results in elucidating the role of neurosteroids and how they may be considered as a potential therapy aimed at improving the outcome in TBI.

Abstract

A specific statistical approach was tested to determine the ironmaking processes (bloomery or indirect) used to manufacture iron reinforcements found in two French gothic medieval monuments: Metz and Beauvais Cathedrals. Slag inclusions embedded in the metallic matrix were analysed and the major element compositions were quantified, using a Si Drift EDS detector permitting the study of several hundred inclusions per artefact. First, pre-processing was applied to the raw data to discriminate inclusions from the smelting stage (or refining stage for the indirect process) from those formed during post-reduction operations (forging etc…). PCA and hierarchical clustering on the major element compositions were then performed. Secondly, a specific multivariate statistical method, logistic regression, was applied to a learning set of data from a reference set of samples. This allowed the development of a model capable of distinguishing artefacts from the two smelting processes and to link unknown samples to one or the other. This model was then used to study artefacts from the Mutte Tower of Metz Cathedral and Beauvais Cathedral. This allowed us to confirm the extensive use of iron reinforcements since the construction of Beauvais cathedral. In the Mutte Tower of Metz Cathedral clamps from Lorraine reinforced some parts of the monument from its construction between the 13th and the 15th centuries.

Abstract

The performances of two rotor-damaged commercial anemometers (Vector Instruments A100 LK) were studied. The calibration results (i.e. the transfer function) were very linear, the aerodynamic behavior being more efficient than the one shown by both anemometers equipped with undamaged rotors. No detection of the anomaly (the rotors' damage) was possible based on the calibration results. However, the Fourier analysis clearly revealed this anomaly.

In this paper, we report the direct chemical synthesis of silicon sheets in gram-scale quantities by chemical exfoliation of pre-processed calcium di-silicide (CaSi2). We have used a combination of X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy and Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy to characterize the obtained silicon sheets. Abstract

The genetic diversity and population structure of Lippia origanoides, a species of the Verbenaceae family that shows promise as a crop plant, was investigated along an altitudinal gradient in the basin of the Chicamocha River in northeastern Colombia. The economic importance of the species, quality of its essential oils, and the fact that it is restricted to some few semiarid areas in northern South America may put the species at risk in a scenario of uncontrolled harvest of natural populations. Lippia origanoides was sampled along an altitudinal gradient from 365 to 2595 m.a.s.l. throughout Chicamocha River Canyon, a semiarid area in northeastern Colombia. Genetic diversity was assessed by means of AFLP markers. The number of AFLP loci (355) and the number of individuals sampled (173) were sufficient to reliably identify four populations at contrasting altitudes (FST = 0.18, P-value < 0.0000), two populations in the lower basin, one population in the medium basin, and one population in the upper basin, with a low level of admixture between them. In average, genetic diversity within populations was relatively high (Ht = 0.32; I = 0.48); nevertheless, diversity was significantly reduced at higher altitude, a pattern that may be consistent with a scenario of range expansion toward higher elevations in an environment with more extreme conditions. The differences in altitude among the basins in the Chicamocha River seem to be relevant in determining the genetic structure of this species.

Abstract

The calibration coefficients of several models of cup and propeller anemometers were analysed. The analysis was based on a series of laboratory calibrations between January 2003 and August 2007. Mean and standard deviation values of calibration coefficients from the anemometers studied were included. Two calibration procedures were used and compared. In the first, recommended by the Measuring Network of Wind Energy Institutes (MEASNET), 13 measurement points were taken over a wind speed range of 4 to 16 m s−1. In the second procedure, 9 measurement points were taken over a wider speed range of 4 to 23 m s−1. Results indicated no significant differences between the two calibration procedures applied to the same anemometer in terms of measured wind speed and wind turbines' Annual Energy Production (AEP). The influence of the cup anemometers' design on the calibration coefficients was also analysed. The results revealed that the slope of the calibration curve, if based on the rotation frequency and not the anemometer's output frequency, seemed to depend on the cup center rotation radius. Abstract

Se realizó un estudio descriptivo transversal a los pacientes con litiasis renal en dos consultorios médicos de familia de la misión "Barrio Adentro" en la comunidad Manzanillo, Estado Zulia, Venezuela, en el período comprendido entre el 2006 y 2007, con el objetivo de describir las características clínicas y epidemiológicas de estos pacientes y así evitar posibles recidivas y establecer mensajes básicos que ayuden en la prevención primaria. El universo estuvo constituido por el total de pacientes adultos con diagnóstico de urolitiasis 143 y la muestra quedó conformada por 124 pacientes (voluntariedad de incorporarse al estudio y que cumplieran criterios de inclusión y exclusión determinado por autores. La información se obtuvo mediante una planilla de recolección de datos previamente diseñada, aplicada a las historias clínicas; los datos obtenidos se procesaron en forma computarizada para lo cual se creó una base de datos; se aplicó el sistema Microstat y los resultados se expresaron en porcentaje, se obtuvo un predominio de esta afección en el sexo femenino, el grupo de edad de 50-59 años, con existencia de antecedentes familiares. Las enfermedades asociadas más frecuentes encontradas fueron las infecciones urinarias recurrentes, HTA, artrosis, colecistopatía crónica y asma bronquial. En el estilo de vida predominó la ingesta diaria de productos lácteos y bebidas deshidratantes; como forma clínica de presentación más frecuente el dolor abdominal; en uroanálisis realizado predominó leucocituria y hematuria y en el ultrasonido, la mayoría tenía microlitiasis, únicas y unilaterales.A transverse - Descriptive study was done with patients who had lithiasis in two consulting room of the "Barrio Adentro" Family doctors Mision.These studies were done in Manzanillo, Zulia State, Venezuela during the years 2006 and 2007.The objective of this work was to analyze the epidemiologic characteristic of the patients and to avoid this illness, besides to stablish basic messages helping the primary warning. This study involved 143 adult patients with urolithiasis and the model was stablished with 124 patients who were selected likely method (the patients went to the consulting room in a voluntary way, all of them were selected suitable or not by means of the authors judgment).The information was obtained from the clinic history of the patients, the data were processed in the computer and basic data was created .The microstad sistem was applied and the results were expressed by percentage. An affection in the feminine sex, among patients about 50 or 59 years old was obtained .The had family antecedents the frequent illness were; urine infection, chronic colecytophatia, bronchial asthma, bone pain and HTA. In the way of life of these patients predominate :daily ingest of dairy produce and dehydrating beverage. As a clinic form more frequent the patient had abdominal pain in the urine test, it was found: Leucocituria and Hematuria. In the ultrasound detected that the most part of the patients had micro lithiasis unique and unilateral.

Abstract

La bronquiolitis obliterante (BO) es un síndrome clínico poco frecuente en niños, caracterizado por la obstrucción crónica al flujo de aire asociado a cambios inflamatorios y distintos grados de fibrosis en la vía aérea pequeña. Si bien existen muchas etiologías, la causa más frecuente se asocia a infecciones respiratorias virales, principalmente adenovirus. No existe un consenso para establecer su diagnóstico; sin embargo, se considera un espectro de síntomas persistentes asociados a un patrón en mosaico, bronquiectasias y atelectasias persistentes. El papel de la biopsia pulmonar ha sido cuestionado por su bajo rendimiento, invasividad y complicaciones. No existe un tratamiento específico por lo que el manejo es soporte. Probablemente la mejor estrategia constituya el empleo de antibióticos en forma agresiva, soporte kinésico y nutricional constante y una precoz rehabilitación pulmonar. Estas guías clínicas representan un esfuerzo multidisciplinario, basado en evidencias actuales para brindar herramientas prácticas para el diagnóstico y cuidado de niños y adolescentes con BO post infecciosa.

Abstract

Las infecciones por estreptococo del grupo B (EGB) han experimentado los mismos cambios que el resto de las infecciones pediátricas a nivel mundial. Aunque se considera al EGB como un agente patógeno neonatal, también origina infecciones después de este período. Con el objetivo de estudiar las características de presentación de la infección por EGB en niños, excluyendo neonatos, realizamos un estudio retrospectivo que incluyó a 57 niños en edades entre 1 mes y 14 años, infectados por EGB y que estuvieron ingresados en el Hospital Pediátrico Universitario «Juan M. Márquez» entre 1991 y 2001. El aislamiento y clasificación del EGB se basó en métodos bioquímicos y de diagnóstico con látex. Se revisaron las historias clínicas para la obtención de los datos necesarios, los cuales se procesaron mediante técnicas estadísticas descriptivas. La tasa de incidencia fue de 4,19 por 10 000 ingresos y se evidenció una tendencia ascendente a partir de 1998. La infección de tejidos blandos fue la forma clínica más frecuente en todos los grupos de edades (54,4 %). El origen de esta infección estuvo predominantemente en la comunidad (91,2 %), además de 5 infecciones nosocomiales (8,8 %). Los aislamientos de EGB tuvieron un 100 % de sensibilidad a los betalactámicos, particularmente a la penicilina G. La tasa de letalidad general fue de 3,5 %. Se evidenció una tendencia a la emergencia de la infección por EGB en pacientes pediátricos, fundamentalmente como una infección adquirida en la comunidad y que puede ser letal en algunos pacientes con infección sistémica. El EGB continúa teniendo elevada susceptibilidad a los antibióticos betalactámicos.

Introducción: La neumonía recurrente ha sido definida como al menos dos episodios de neumonía en un año o tres o más en toda la vida, con mejoría radiológica entre los episodios. Objetivos: Describir el perfil clínico, epidemiológico y factores asociados al diagnóstico de neumonía recurrente en pacientes controlados en el policlínico de Broncopulmonar de la Pontificia Universidad Católica, durante el periodo comprendido entre enero de 1992 hasta julio del 2003. Pacientes y Métodos: Se revisaron las fichas de pacientes con diagnóstico de neumonía recurrente controlados en el policlínico de Broncopulmonar Infantil. Resultados: Se revisaron un total de 121 pacientes. La mayoría de las neumonías fueron unilobares. En relación a los factores asociados, 19 pacientes eran asmáticos (16%), 15% presentaban trastornos neurológicos de base, 11% trastornos de deglución con aspiración pulmonar. En un 17% no se identificaron factores asociados. Conclusiones: Los factores asociados más frecuentes encontrados fueron: asma bronquial, hiperactividad bronquial, trastornos neurológicos y aspiración pulmonar. Es necesario estudiar si el control de estos factores asociados puede disminuir los episodios de neumonía Background: Recurrent pneumonia has been defined as at least 2 episodes of pneumonia in one year or more than three during any period with radiographic clearing between episodes. Objectives: To determine the frequency of underlying factors for recurrent pneumonia of patients attending outpatients at the Catholic University Hospital between January 1992 and July 2003. Patients and Methods: A retrospective review of the clinical files of children diagnosed with recurrent pneumonia attending the Paedriatric Respiratory outpatient clinic. Results: 121 children fulfilled the diagnostic criteria for recurrent pneumonia. Most of them were unilobar. Underlying illnesses included asthma 16%, neurological disorder 15% and pulmonary aspiration syndrome 11%. In 21% of cases no underlying illness was found. Conclusions: The most common underlying condition for recurrent pneumonia were; asthma, hyper-bronchial responsiveness, neurological disorder and pulmonary aspiration syndrome. A follow-up study needs to be carried out to evaluate whether improved clinicalmanagement of these conditions could effectively lower the risk of a new episode of pneumonia

Abstract

An analysis of cluster growth and dynamics leading to phase transformation through homogeneous nucleation is developed to account for thermal nonaccommodation within the period of one vibration of the newly formed cluster. The approach, which is an extension of studies by Volmer and Feder et al., considers the following different mechanisms of interaction between clusters: (1) condensation of single molecules, (2) evaporation of molecules from clusters, and (3) coagulation between clusters. This approach is evaluated by comparing computer simulations of the population balance equations with classical nucleation theory and with experimental results reported in the literature. The interaction of the impinging molecule with the surface of the condensed phase is central to the development. The probability that such an impinging molecule will condense, be thermally equilibrated, and be incorporated into the cluster is included in the thermal nonaccommodation term in the basic population balance equations. Abstract

Astrocytes exert multiple functions in the brain such as the development of blood-brain barrier characteristics, the promotion of neurovascular coupling, attraction of cells through the release of chemokines, clearance of toxic substances and generation of antioxidant molecules and growth factors. In this aspect, astrocytes secrete several growth factors (BDNF, GDNF, NGF, and others) that are fundamental for cell viability, oxidant protection, genetic expression and modulation of metabolic functions. The platelet derived growth factor (PDGF), which is expressed by many SNC cells, including astrocytes, is an important molecule that has shown neuroprotective potential, improvement of wound healing, regulation of calcium metabolism and mitochondrial function. Here we explore some of these astrocyte-driven functions of growth factors and their possible therapeutic uses in the context of neurodegeneration.

Abstract

En este artículo se contrastó un modelo explicativo de la percepción de inseguridad, a través del análisis del papel de la impunidad percibida, programas de seguridad pública, confianza en autoridades y medidas preventivas, en la relación entre la victimización y la inseguridad. Participaron 8170 habitantes del Estado de Morelos, México. Los resultados mostraron que la victimización ejerció un efecto directo sobre impunidad y estas a su vez incrementaron la inseguridad percibida. Mientras que la confianza en las autoridades y los programas preventivos, disminuyeron la inseguridad a pesar del alto nivel de victimización. Los resultados tienen importantes implicaciones para el tema de la seguridad ciudadana.----In this article explicative model of the perception of insecurity was contrasted, through the analysis of the role played by impunity, prevention programs’ expectation, trust on the authorities and prevention strategies in the relation between victimization and insecurity. The participants were 8170 inhabitants of Morelos State, Mexico. The results showed that victimization had a direct effect on impunity, which increased the perception of insecurity. While trust on the authorities and the prevention programs reduced the insecurity regardless of the victimization level. Results have important implications for the citizen’s security.

Abstract

International audience; Pline le jeune dans son Histoire Naturelle (livre XXXIV) distingue de nombreuses qualités de fer qu’il caractérise principalement par leur souplesse/dureté et par leurs domaines d’utilisation privilégiés. Dans cet ouvrage, Pline expose aussi le lien établi par ces contemporains entre qualité des métaux et origine. À cette occasion, il mentionne également les matières déterminantes utilisées et les gestes techniques spécifiques qui influent sur la fabrication de certaines qualités de fer au cours du processus de réduction, mais aussi au cours des phases de compactage qui accompagnent la mise en forme des demi-produits, ces barres de fer destinées au commerce. Or, depuis maintenant plus de 10 ans, un consortium interdisciplinaire d’équipes de recherche du CNRS et du Ministère de la Culture Français étudie les barres de fer découvertes en France et en Europe avec une approche intégrée associant archéologie, étude des formes et des estampilles, analyses des matériaux et des provenances. Ces études révèlent à la fois l’existence de plusieurs natures d’alliages ferreux, dont les propriétés mécaniques peuvent varier, suggérant ainsi la possibilité de considérer plusieurs qualités, au sens où Pline pouvait l’entendre. Cette notion se doit cependant d’être discutée et précisée. Pour ce faire, notre communication a pour but de proposer une synthèse sur les connaissances acquises en la matière et de les confronter aux écrits antiques contemporains de Pline. L’enjeu est donc ici de dégager des constantes communes entre écrits antiques et recherches contemporaines qui permettront de mieux comprendre la perception que les antiques se faisaient de la notion de qualité - ici des fers -, mais également de pointer les incohérences qu’il reste à expliquer. L’enjeu est aussi de commencer à mesurer l’influence que peut avoir la notion de qualité sur le commerce du fer dans l’Empire romain occidental, entre gisements exploités et espaces de consommation

Abstract

El derecho al acceso a la salud por parte de las personas lgbtttiqa+ se encuentra condicionado a una serie de factores que no solo implican el ámbito de lo legal, sino que también se encuentra asociado con otros factores, como los culturales y sociales, lo que significa que cada caso debe ser complejizado y no ser reducido de ninguna forma, dado que sería contraproducente para las propias vidas lgbtttiqa+. Esto último responde a una perspectiva bioética social que no sujeta su comprensión de los hechos a partir de las solas decisiones personales, sino que toma en cuenta las distintas estructuras para formular un análisis más amplio. Partiendo de esta perspectiva, se reflexiona en torno a lo que implicaría una autonomía relacional y a la justicia, y debido a que se emplea como metodología una posición etnográfica y crítica de género esta se convierte en una oportunidad para escribir en primera persona.
