Abstract

Abstract Background The nationally determined contribution (NDC) presented by Argentina within the framework of the Paris Agreement is aligned with the decisions made in the context of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) on the reduction of emissions derived from deforestation and forest degradation, as well as forest carbon conservation (REDD+). In addition, climate change constitutes one of the greatest threats to forest biodiversity and ecosystem services. However, the soil organic carbon (SOC) stocks of native forests have not been incorporated into the Forest Reference Emission Levels calculations and for conservation planning under climate variability due to a lack of information. The objectives of this study were: (i) to model SOC stocks to 30 cm of native forests at a national scale using climatic, topographic and vegetation as predictor variables, and (ii) to relate SOC stocks with spatial–temporal remotely sensed indices to determine biodiversity conservation concerns due to threats from high inter-annual climate variability. Methods We used 1040 forest soil samples (0–30 cm) to generate spatially explicit estimates of SOC native forests in Argentina at a spatial resolution of approximately 200 m. We selected 52 potential predictive environmental covariates, which represent key factors for the spatial distribution of SOC. All covariate maps were uploaded to the Google Earth Engine cloud-based computing platform for subsequent modelling. To determine the biodiversity threats from high inter-annual climate variability, we employed the spatial–temporal satellite-derived indices based on Enhanced Vegetation Index (EVI) and land surface temperature (LST) images from Landsat imagery. Results SOC model (0–30 cm depth) prediction accounted for 69% of the variation of this soil property across the whole native forest coverage in Argentina. Total mean SOC stock reached 2.81 Pg C (2.71–2.84 Pg C with a probability of 90%) for a total area of 460,790 km2, where Chaco forests represented 58.4% of total SOC stored, followed by Andean Patagonian forests (16.7%) and Espinal forests (10.0%). SOC stock model was fitted as a function of regional climate, which greatly influenced forest ecosystems, including precipitation (annual mean precipitation and precipitation of warmest quarter) and temperature (day land surface temperature, seasonality, maximum temperature of warmest month, month of maximum temperature, night land surface temperature, and monthly minimum temperature). Biodiversity was influenced by the SOC levels and the forest regions. Conclusions In the framework of the Kyoto Protocol and REDD+, information derived in the present work from the estimate of SOC in native forests can be incorporated into the annual National Inventory Report of Argentina to assist forest management proposals. It also gives insight into how native forests can be more resilient to reduce the impact of biodiversity loss.

Abstract

En un mundo caracterizado por desafíos ambientales cada vez más apremiantes, la necesidad de fomentar la conciencia ambiental entre las nuevas generaciones se vuelve una prioridad ineludible. Por ello, la investigación planteó como objetivo proponer estrategias educativas para la adquisición de competencias de conciencia ambiental en estudiantes universitarios del Perú. La metodología utilizada en la investigación se basó en un enfoque cualitativo e interpretativo, siguiendo el enfoque de proyecto factible. Se llevó a cabo en una universidad en Lima, con seis docentes como informantes clave, utilizando entrevistas semiestructuradas con tres preguntas generadoras para obtener el diagnóstico necesario. Se evaluó la factibilidad a través de un análisis FODA. La propuesta educativa incluyó tres unidades didácticas que abordan competencias generales, específicas y profesionales para desarrollar la conciencia ambiental. En las conclusiones se destaca que estas competencias no solo enriquecen el conocimiento académico, sino que también promueven la adopción de valores éticos y la toma de decisiones informadas en beneficio del medio ambiente.

Abstract

Introduction: Skin lesions are a common extraintestinal manifestation associated with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), although they may also appear as a complication of IBD treatment. Prompt referral to the dermatologist can be very helpful in practice. Teledermatology complements the traditional in-person health care modality, improving access to dermatological care. Objective: To evaluate the impact of a store-and-forward teledermatology electronic consultation (e-consult) program on the care of IBD patients. Methods: A retrospective study assessing the outcomes of our teledermatology program over its first 2 years of implementation. Results: A total of 39 consultations involving 33 patients (69.2% women, mean age 39.6 years [12?63]) were conducted. The mean number of teleconsultations was 2.8 per month in the initial implementation stage: 33 consultations were carried out in patients with Crohn's disease and 6 in ulcerative colitis. Only 18% of the patients had an active flare-up. The most frequent reason for the e-consult was paradoxical psoriasiform lesions (n?=?13, 33.3%), commonly related with anti-tumor necrosis factor agents (70% of the patients) and hidradenitis suppurativa (n?=?4, 10.3%). Resolution was achieved in 87% of patients, with a mean waiting time of 4.7 days (0?14). Almost all patients (97%) were satisfied with our program, and considered the referral through the program to be appropriate (92%). Best valued features were the reduced waiting time and the coordinated approach between the two departments involved. Conclusions: Dermatology e-consult is an efficient and useful means of optimizing IBD patient care.

Abstract

Current image harmonization methods consider the entire background as the guidance for harmonization. However, this may limit the capability for user to choose any specific object/person in the background to guide the harmonization. To enable flexible interaction between user and harmonization, we introduce interactive harmonization, a new setting where the harmonization is performed with respect to a selected \emph{region} in the reference image instead of the entire background. A new flexible framework that allows users to pick certain regions of the background image and use it to guide the harmonization is proposed. Inspired by professional portrait harmonization users, we also introduce a new luminance matching loss to optimally match the color/luminance conditions between the composite foreground and select reference region. This framework provides more control to the image harmonization pipeline achieving visually pleasing portrait edits. Furthermore, we also introduce a new dataset carefully curated for validating portrait harmonization. Extensive experiments on both synthetic and real-world datasets show that the proposed approach is efficient and robust compared to previous harmonization baselines, especially for portraits. Abstract

In this short note the QED extension of the nucleon spin sum rule is considered. To this end, the leading-order (LO) QED evolution kernels for the quark/gluon helicity and orbital-angular-momentum (OAM) distributions are calculated, as well as their lepton and photon analogue distributions introduced for the first time. The LO evolution kernels of the latter are also calculated, both in QCD and QED. Putting all together, the nucleon spin sum rule remains scale-invariant in QCD$\times$QED, as expected, which represents a check of the newly obtained results. This theoretical development will allow in the future the quantification of the contributions of lepton and photon distributions to the nucleon spin, and a more precise control over the uncertainties., Comment: v1: 6 pages

Abstract

The Internet of Things (IoT) brings connectivity to a massive number of devices that demand energy-efficient solutions to deal with limited battery capacities, uplink-dominant traffic, and channel impairments. In this work, we explore the use of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) equipped with configurable antennas as a flexible solution for serving low-power IoT networks. We formulate an optimization problem to set the position and antenna beamwidth of the UAV, and the transmit power of the IoT devices subject to average-Signal-to-average-Interference-plus-Noise Ratio ($\bar{\text{S}}\overline{\text{IN}}\text{R}$) Quality of Service (QoS) constraints. We minimize the worst-case average energy consumption of the latter, thus, targeting the fairest allocation of the energy resources. The problem is non-convex and highly non-linear; therefore, we re-formulate it as a series of three geometric programs that can be solved iteratively. Results reveal the benefits of planning the network compared to a random deployment in terms of reducing the worst-case average energy consumption. Furthermore, we show that the target $\bar{\text{S}}\overline{\text{IN}}\text{R}$ is limited by the number of IoT devices, and highlight the dominant impact of the UAV hovering height when serving wider areas. Abstract

Media streaming has been adopted for a variety of applications such as entertainment, visualization, and design. Unlike video/audio streaming where the content is usually consumed sequentially, 3D applications such as gaming require streaming 3D assets to facilitate client-side interactions such as object manipulation and viewpoint movement. Compared to audio and video streaming, 3D streaming often requires larger data sizes and yet lower latency to ensure sufficient rendering quality, resolution, and latency for perceptual comfort. Thus, streaming 3D assets can be even more challenging than streaming audios/videos, and existing solutions often suffer from long loading time or limited quality. To address this critical and timely issue, we propose a perceptually-optimized progressive 3D streaming method for spatial quality and temporal consistency in immersive interactions. Based on the human visual mechanisms in the frequency domain, our model selects and schedules the streaming dataset for optimal spatial-temporal quality. We also train a neural network for our model to accelerate this decision process for real-time client-server applications. We evaluate our method via subjective studies and objective analysis under varying network conditions (from 3G to 5G) and client devices (HMD and traditional displays), and demonstrate better visual quality and temporal consistency than alternative solutions.

Abstract

This work shows the results obtained with a novel modified active disturbance rejection control (MADRC) algorithm when controlling the detuning of a 9-cell TESLA superconducting radio frequency cavity. This type of control is essential in SRF cavities with high loaded quality factors since they are extremely sensitive to detuning due to their extremely narrow bandwidth. The modification of the active disturbance rejection control is based on loop shaping techniques and confers ease of design and implementation, as well as an improved behavior in presence of delay. To begin with, a theoretical design of the controller based on an experimental transfer function of the cavity is carried out and its performance is compared with that of a proportional integral control. In this preliminary test, the simulation results indicate a remarkable performance superiority of the MADRC. Later, the controller is tested on a TESLA cavity validating both the MADRC algorithm and its design methodology, and achieving a peak detuning reduction of 63%, as well as an rms reduction of 80% with respect to the open loop.

Abstract

Monocytes and macrophages are part of innate immunity and constitute the first line of defense against pathogens. Bone marrow-derived monocytes circulate in the bloodstream for one to three days and then typically migrate into tissues, where they differentiate into macrophages. Circulatory monocytes represent 5% of the nucleated cells in normal adult blood. Following differentiation, macrophages are distributed into various tissues and organs to take residence and maintain body homeostasis. Emerging evidence has highlighted the critical role of monocytes/macrophages in oncogenic viral infections, mainly their crucial functions in viral persistence and disease progression. These findings open opportunities to target innate immunity in the context of oncogenic viruses and to explore their potential as immunotherapies.

Abstract

Artificial intelligence techniques are beginning to be implemented in most areas. In the particular case of automobiles, new cars include integrated applications, such as cameras in different configurations, including in the rear of the car to provide assistance while reversing, as well as front and side cameras; these applications also include different configurations of sensors that provide information to the driver, such as objects approaching from different directions, such as from the front and sides. In this paper, we propose a practical and low-cost methodology to provide solutions using artificial intelligence techniques, as is the purpose of YOLO architecture, version 3, using hardware based on Nvidia’s Jetson TK1 architecture, and configurations in conventional cars. The results that we present demonstrate that these technologies can be applied in conventional cars, working with independent power to avoid causing problems in these cars, and we evaluate their application in the detection of people and cars in different situations, which allows information to be provided to the driver while performing maneuvers. The methodology that we provide can be replicated and scaled according to needs.

Abstract

Genetic variants in SCN2A, encoding the NaV1.2 voltage-gated sodium channel, are associated with a range of neurodevelopmental disorders with overlapping phenotypes. Some variants fit into a framework wherein gain-of-function missense variants that increase neuronal excitability lead to developmental and epileptic encephalopathy, while loss-of-function variants that reduce neuronal excitability lead to intellectual disability and/or autism spectrum disorder (ASD) with or without co-morbid seizures. One unique case less easily classified using this framework is the de novo missense variant SCN2A-p.K1422E, associated with infant-onset developmental delay, infantile spasms and features of ASD. Prior structure-function studies demonstrated that K1422E substitution alters ion selectivity of NaV1.2, conferring Ca2+ permeability, lowering overall conductance and conferring resistance to tetrodotoxin (TTX). Based on heterologous expression of K1422E, we developed a compartmental neuron model incorporating variant channels that predicted reductions in peak action potential (AP) speed. We generated Scn2aK1422E mice and characterized effects on neurons and neurological/neurobehavioral phenotypes. Cultured cortical neurons from heterozygous Scn2aK1422E/+ mice exhibited lower current density with a TTX-resistant component and reversal potential consistent with mixed ion permeation. Recordings from Scn2aK1442E/+ cortical slices demonstrated impaired AP initiation and larger Ca2+ transients at the axon initial segment during the rising phase of the AP, suggesting complex effects on channel function. Scn2aK1422E/+ mice exhibited rare spontaneous seizures, interictal electroencephalogram abnormalities, altered induced seizure thresholds, reduced anxiety-like behavior and alterations in olfactory-guided social behavior. Overall, Scn2aK1422E/+ mice present with phenotypes similar yet distinct from other Scn2a models, consistent with complex effects of K1422E on NaV1.2 channel function.

Specifically, the researcher captured educators' first-hand accounts of their experiences shifting to fully online reading instruction, adapting instructional materials that were designed for in-person instruction for online learning, confronting challenges and successes during this period of uncertainty, and transitioning back to in-person instruction amidst the then ongoing pandemic. The following research questions were posed: 1. How do novice elementary reading teachers, in a large public school district in South Florida, describe their experiences teaching reading online during a global pandemic? 2. How do novice elementary reading teachers in a large public school district in South Florida describe their experiences adapting learning resources to meet the needs of their students during online learning? 3. How do novice elementary reading teachers in a large public school district in South Florida describe challenges and/or successes encountered while providing online reading instruction to their students? 4. How do novice elementary reading teachers, in a large public school district in South Florida, describe their experiences returning to face-to-face instruction in the midst of a global pandemic? Following individual interviews with five novice teachers, the researcher analyzed the data for emerging patterns and themes. After transcribing the interviews, the researcher worked with participants to co-construct narratives of their experiences. Findings provided an understanding of the inadequate training novice teachers received for online instruction prior to the pandemic, the constraints imposed by the mandated curriculum, the extensive and time-consuming instructional planning process for online instruction, the frustration they felt during online instructional delivery, the accomplishments despite the difficulties, and the shifts in parent involvement. Future research could expand on teaching other subject areas online during the pandemic. Additional studies could include interviews with students, parents, and administrators. The results of this study have implications for educational policymakers, administrators, and other educators as this study provides insight into what novice elementary reading teachers experienced during the pandemic. Abstract

The generation of well-designed artwork is often quite time-consuming and assumes a high degree of proficiency on part of the human painter. In order to facilitate the human painting process, substantial research efforts have been made on teaching machines how to "paint like a human", and then using the trained agent as a painting assistant tool for human users. However, current research in this direction is often reliant on a progressive grid-based division strategy wherein the agent divides the overall image into successively finer grids, and then proceeds to paint each of them in parallel. This inevitably leads to artificial painting sequences which are not easily intelligible to human users. To address this, we propose a novel painting approach which learns to generate output canvases while exhibiting a more human-like painting style. The proposed painting pipeline Intelli-Paint consists of 1) a progressive layering strategy which allows the agent to first paint a natural background scene representation before adding in each of the foreground objects in a progressive fashion. 2) We also introduce a novel sequential brushstroke guidance strategy which helps the painting agent to shift its attention between different image regions in a semantic-aware manner. 3) Finally, we propose a brushstroke regularization strategy which allows for ~60-80% reduction in the total number of required brushstrokes without any perceivable differences in the quality of the generated canvases. Through both quantitative and qualitative results, we show that the resulting agents not only show enhanced efficiency in output canvas generation but also exhibit a more natural-looking painting style which would better assist human users express their ideas through digital artwork.

114. XERUS: An open-source tool for quick XRD phase identification and refinement automation

Abstract

Analysis of XRD diffraction patterns is one of the keystones of materials science and materials research. With the advancement of data-driven methods for materials design, candidate materials can be quickly screened for the study of a desired physical property. Efficient methods to automatically analyze and identify phases present in a given pattern, are paramount for the success of this new paradigm. To aid this process, the open source python package Xray Estimation and Refinement Using Similarity (XERUS) for semi-automatic/automatic phase identification is presented. XERUS takes advantages of open crystal structure databases, not relying on proprietary databases, to obtain crystal structures on the fly, being then chemical space agnostic. By wrapping around GSASII, it can automatically simulate patterns and calculate similarity measures used for phase identification. Our approach is simple and quick but also applicable to multiphase identification, by coupling the similarity calculations with quick refinements followed by an iterative peak removal process. XERUS is shown in action in four different experimental datasets and also it is benchmarked against a recently proposed deep learning method for a mixture dataset covering the Li-Mn-O-F chemical space. Abstract

We present new observations of the cataclysmic variable DW Cancri, after the system recovered from a low state. We performed a power spectrum analysis that reveals a clear signal of the 38 min spin period in our photometric data. Our spectroscopic power spectrum search was consistent with studies performed before the low state, showing the orbital and spin modulations. We also conducted a Doppler Tomography study which exhibits a disc structure and an enhanced emission region, possibly related to a hot spot component. Through a wavelet transform analysis we also found evidence of the 70 min spin-orbit beat period. We interpret these results as indication of a partial recovery of the system. Nonetheless, DW Cnc does not yet show all the original photometric modulations reported in 2004, before experiencing the low state. Namely, these signals are a 38 min spin period, an 86 min orbital period, a 70 min beat period between the latter modulations, and an unresolved 110 min period. Even though our photometry shows a spin cycle modulation and a long 108 min period, it lacks the beat and orbital period signals. Thus, we propose further observations of DW Cancri, to elucidate if the mechanisms giving rise to the signatures observed prior to the low state, require more time to reactivate., Comment: 32 pages, 21 figures

116. High-dispersion spectroscopy of AE Aquarii -- II. Evidence of material orbiting the primary star

Abstract

We present a second paper related to the analyses of high-dispersion spectroscopic observations of the magnetic cataclysmic variable AE Aquarii. We focus our efforts on the study of the emission lines and their radial velocities. We detect a sinusoidal behaviour, in several of the observing runs, with variable amplitudes. Of those runs presented, the velocity curve of 2000 August shows less instability in the emission material. In this case, we obtain K1 = 114 +/- 8 km s-1, which we take as our best value for the radial velocity of the primary. This result is consistent within 2sigma with previously published values obtained using indirect methods. We interpret this consistency as observational evidence of material orbiting the rapidly rotating primary star. We present a Doppler tomography study, which shows that the H alpha emission is primarily concentrated within a blob in the lower left quadrant, a structure similar to that predicted by the propeller model. However, for 2000 August, we find the emission centred around the position of the white dwarf, which supports the possibility of the K1 value of this run of being a valid approximation of the orbital motion of the white dwarf., Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

Self-energy recycling (sER), which allows transmit energy re-utilization, has emerged as a viable option for improving the energy efficiency (EE) in low-power Internet of Things networks. In this work, we investigate its benefits also in terms of reliability improvements and compare the performance of full-duplex (FD) and half-duplex (HD) schemes when using multi-antenna techniques in a communication system. We analyze the trade-offs when considering not only the energy spent on transmission but also the circuitry power consumption, thus making the analysis of much more practical interest. In addition to the well known spectral efficiency improvements, results show that FD also outperforms HD in terms of reliability. We show that sER introduces not only benefits in EE matters but also some modifications on how to achieve maximum reliability fairness between uplink and downlink transmissions, which is the main goal in this work. In order to achieve this objective, we propose the use of a dynamic FD scheme where the small base station (SBS) determines the optimal allocation of antennas for transmission and reception. We show the significant improvement gains of this strategy for the system outage probability when compared to the simple HD and FD schemes., Comment: The paper is not published yet but it was accepted to be published in IEEE Systems Journal

Abstract

We discuss the measurement of gluon transverse momentum distribution (TMD) in dijet and heavy hadron pair (HHP) production in semi-inclusive deep inelastic scattering. The factorization of these processes in impact parameter space shows the appearance of a specific new soft factor matrix element on top of angular a complex valued anomalous dimensions. We show in detail how these features can be treated consistently and we discuss a scale prescription for the evolution kernel of the dijet soft function. As a result we obtain phenomenological predictions for unpolarized and angular modulated cross-sections for the electron-ion collider (EIC) using current available information on unpolarized TMD., Comment: 29 pages, 7 figures

Abstract

In the past decade filaments have been recognised as a major structural element of the interstellar medium, the densest of these filaments hosting the formation of most stars. In some star-forming molecular clouds converging networks of filaments, also known as hub filament systems, can be found. These hubs are believed to be preferentially associated to massive star formation. As of today, there are no metrics that allow the systematic quantification of a filament network convergence. Here, we used the IRAM 30m NIKA2 observations of the Galactic plane from the GASTON large programme to systematically identify filaments and produce a filament convergence parameter map. We use such a map to show that: i. hub filaments represent a small fraction of the global filament population; ii. hubs host, in proportion, more massive and more luminous compact sources that non-hubs; iii. hub-hosting clumps are more evolved that non-hubs; iv. no discontinuities are observed in the properties of compact sources as a function of convergence parameter. 134. Remote control healing for osteoarthritis repair

Abstract

Articular cartilage is a key tissue for the normal functioning of the joints, with a trend for degradation with aging and physical activity. The lack of vascularisation hinders the self-repair, and often a scar tissue replaces the damaged cartilage, failing to fulfill the mechanical and functional needs for normal functioning of the joints. Current therapeutic approaches fail to stop the progression of this chronic disease, and represent a huge economic burden for the health system. The need for a less-invasive treatment for delaying the progression of the disease while improving the life quality of the patient has led to tissue engineering scientists to research for a potential therapy. Currently research has focused on MSCs for their expansion potential, multi-lineage differentiation and low immunogenicity. Despite the promising outcome of novel studied there is still need for techniques that manage to generate tissue matching those properties of the native cartilage. This work aimed to develop a new technique for cartilage regeneration that could potentially deliver a remote therapy. UC-MSCs were studied as a potential cell source for chondrogenic differentiation using the MICA technology. Cells were labelled with MNPs targeted towards TRPV4, a mechanosensitive ion channel involved in cartilage homeostasis (1). The channel was activated following MNPs labelling of cells, by using a magnetic force bioreactor that generates an external alternating magnetic field. The force exerted by the activated MNPs trigger the activation of the ion channel, with the subsequent ion exchange and signaling activation pathway. The effects of the MICA technology on the chondrogenic response were assessed by in-depth histological and immunohistochemical assessment of the cartilage constructs. In addition, gene expression analysis of chondrogenic markers and early transcription factors was performed on several cell sources. The combination of the MICA technology together with the aid of biochemical cues resulted in constructs showing enhanced deposition of chondrogenic markers at early time points. Elevated collagen II, proteoglycans and SOX9 was observed for the 3D constructs without any presence of hypertrophy signs. This was observed for all tested cell sources with a promising potential for UCMSCs as candidates for cartilage repair. We believe that the work here has a great potential for developing a therapy for cartilage repair based on the combination of MSCs and MNPs with the aid of the MICA technology.

Background: Pet ownership is widespread, offering numerous benefits to individuals and families. However, the risk of zoonotic diseases must be carefully considered, especially for immunosuppressed patients. Knowledge gaps in preventive measures for zoonoses have been identified, underscoring the vital role of veterinarians in addressing this issue. Objectives: This study aimed to assess the knowledge and recommendations of veterinarians regarding pet ownership by immunocompromised individuals. Additionally, we compared these insights with responses from European healthcare professionals specializing in pediatric transplant recipients. Methods: We conducted an observational, cross-sectional study involving small animal veterinarians in Spain. An online survey was administered to gather information on veterinarians' knowledge of zoonoses and their recommendations for immunocompromised pet owners. Results: A survey of 514 individuals was collected from experienced veterinarians mainly working in primary care clinics. Surprisingly, 63% of respondents did not routinely inquire about the presence of immunocompromised individuals among pet owners, although 54% offered specific recommendations for this group. Most respondents adhered to deworming guidelines for pets owned by immunocompromised individuals and demonstrated sound practices in Leishmania and Leptospira prevention, as well as the avoidance of raw food. However, gaps were noted concerning Bordetella bronchiseptica vaccination. Notably, veterinarians outperformed medical professionals in their knowledge of zoonotic cases and identification of zoonotic microorganisms. The presence of specific recommendations in veterinary clinics was viewed positively by nearly all respondents. Conclusions: Our findings indicate that veterinarians possess a superior understanding of zoonotic pathogens and exhibit greater proficiency in diagnosing zoonoses compared with physicians. They stay well-informed about recommendations outlined in established guidelines and are more likely to provide written recommendations in their clinics than physicians. Nevertheless, knowledge gaps among veterinarians emphasize the need for enhanced communication between medical and veterinary professionals. Reinforcing the “One Health” concept is imperative, with veterinarians playing a pivotal role in this collaborative effort.

Abstract

Pathogenic variants in KCNB1 are associated with a neurodevelopmental disorder spectrum that includes global developmental delays, cognitive impairment, abnormal electroencephalogram (EEG) patterns, and epilepsy with variable age of onset and severity. Additionally, there are prominent behavioral disturbances, including hyperactivity, aggression, and features of autism spectrum disorder. The most frequently identified recurrent variant is KCNB1-p.R306C, a missense variant located within the S4 voltage-sensing transmembrane domain. Individuals with the R306C variant exhibit mild to severe developmental delays, behavioral disorders, and a diverse spectrum of seizures. Previous in vitro characterization of R306C described altered sensitivity and cooperativity of the voltage sensor and impaired capacity for repetitive firing of neurons. Existing Kcnb1 mouse models include dominant negative missense variants, as well as knockout and frameshifts alleles. While all models recapitulate key features of KCNB1 encephalopathy, mice with dominant negative alleles were more severely affected. In contrast to existing loss-of-function and dominant-negative variants, KCNB1-p.R306C does not affect channel expression, but rather affects voltage-sensing. Thus, modeling R306C in mice provides a novel opportunity to explore impacts of a voltage-sensing mutation in Kcnb1. Using CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing, we generated the Kcnb1R306C mouse model and characterized the molecular and phenotypic effects. Consistent with the in vitro studies, neurons from Kcnb1R306C mice showed altered excitability. Heterozygous and homozygous R306C mice exhibited hyperactivity, altered susceptibility to chemoconvulsant-induced seizures, and frequent, long runs of slow spike wave discharges on EEG, reminiscent of the slow spike and wave activity characteristic of Lennox Gastaut syndrome. This novel model of channel dysfunction in Kcnb1 provides an additional, valuable tool to study KCNB1 encephalopathies. Furthermore, this allelic series of Kcnb1 mouse models will provide a unique platform to evaluate targeted therapies.

Abstract

Background Pre-existing cardiovascular disease (CVD) or cardiovascular risk factors have been associated with an increased risk of complications following hospitalisation with COVID-19, but their impact on the rate of recovery following discharge is not known.Objectives To determine whether the rate of patient-perceived recovery following hospitalisation with COVID-19 was affected by the presence of CVD or cardiovascular risk factors.Methods In a multicentre prospective cohort study, patients were recruited following discharge from the hospital with COVID-19 undertaking two comprehensive assessments at 5 months and 12 months. Patients were stratified by the presence of either CVD or cardiovascular risk factors prior to hospitalisation with COVID-19 and compared with controls with neither. Full recovery was determined by the response to a patient-perceived evaluation of full recovery from COVID-19 in the context of physical, physiological and cognitive determinants of health.Results From a total population of 2545 patients (38.8% women), 472 (18.5%) and 1355 (53.2%) had CVD or cardiovascular risk factors, respectively. Compared with controls (n=718), patients with CVD and cardiovascular risk factors were older and more likely to have had severe COVID-19. Full recovery was significantly lower at 12 months in patients with CVD (adjusted OR (aOR) 0.62, 95% CI 0.43 to 0.89) and cardiovascular risk factors (aOR 0.66, 95% CI 0.50 to 0.86).Conclusion Patients with CVD or cardiovascular risk factors had a delayed recovery at 12 months following hospitalisation with COVID-19. Targeted interventions to reduce the impact of COVID-19 in patients with cardiovascular disease remain an unmet need.Trail registration number ISRCTN10980107.

Abstract

Understanding nitrogen (N) uptake rates respect to nutrient availability and the biogeography of phytoplankton communities is crucial for untangling the complexities of marine ecosystems and the physical, biological, and chemical forces shaping them. In the summer of 2016, we conducted measurements of bulk microbial uptake rates for six 15N-labeled substrates: nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, urea, cyanate, and dissolve free amino acids across distinct marine provinces, including the continental shelf of the Mid-and South Atlantic Bights (MAB and SAB), the Slope Sea, and the Gulf Stream, marking the first instance of simultaneously measuring six different N uptake rates in this dynamic region. Total measured N uptake rates were lowest in the Gulf Stream followed by the SAB. Notably, the MAB exhibited significantly higher N uptake rates compared to the SAB, likely due to the excess levels of pre-existing phosphorus present in the MAB. Together, urea and nitrate uptake contributed approximately 50% of the total N uptake across the study region. Although cyanate uptake rates were consistently low, they accounted for up to 11% of the total measured N uptake at some Gulf Stream stations. Phytoplankton groups were identified based on specific pigment markers, revealing a dominance of diatoms in the shelf community, while Synechococcus, Prochlorococcus, and pico-eukaryotes dominated in oligotrophic Gulf Stream waters. The reported uptake rates in this study were mostly in agreement with previous studies conducted in coastal waters of the North Atlantic Ocean. This study suggests there are distinct regional patterns of N uptake in this physically dynamic region, correlating with nutrient availability and phytoplankton community composition. These findings contribute valuable insights into the intricate interplay of biological and chemical factors shaping N dynamics in disparate marine ecosystems.

Abstract

BackgroundWrist-worn inertial sensors are used in digital health for evaluating mobility in real-world environments. Preceding the estimation of spatiotemporal gait parameters within long-term recordings, gait detection is an important step to identify regions of interest where gait occurs, which requires robust algorithms due to the complexity of arm movements. While algorithms exist for other sensor positions, a comparative validation of algorithms applied to the wrist position on real-world data sets across different disease populations is missing. Furthermore, gait detection performance differences between the wrist and lower back position have not yet been explored but could yield valuable information regarding sensor position choice in clinical studies. ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to validate gait sequence (GS) detection algorithms developed for the wrist position against reference data acquired in a real-world context. In addition, this study aimed to compare the performance of algorithms applied to the wrist position to those applied to lower back–worn inertial sensors. MethodsParticipants with Parkinson disease, multiple sclerosis, proximal femoral fracture (hip fracture recovery), chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and congestive heart failure and healthy older adults (N=83) were monitored for 2.5 hours in the real-world using inertial sensors on the wrist, lower back, and feet including pressure insoles and infrared distance sensors as reference. In total, 10 algorithms for wrist-based gait detection were validated against a multisensor reference system and compared to gait detection performance using lower back–worn inertial sensors. ResultsThe best-performing GS detection algorithm for the wrist showed a mean (per disease group) sensitivity ranging between 0.55 (SD 0.29) and 0.81 (SD 0.09) and a mean (per disease group) specificity ranging between 0.95 (SD 0.06) and 0.98 (SD 0.02). The mean relative absolute error of estimated walking time ranged between 8.9% (SD 7.1%) and 32.7% (SD 19.2%) per disease group for this algorithm as compared to the reference system. Gait detection performance from the best algorithm applied to the wrist inertial sensors was lower than for the best algorithms applied to the lower back, which yielded mean sensitivity between 0.71 (SD 0.12) and 0.91 (SD 0.04), mean specificity between 0.96 (SD 0.03) and 0.99 (SD 0.01), and a mean relative absolute error of estimated walking time between 6.3% (SD 5.4%) and 23.5% (SD 13%). Performance was lower in disease groups with major gait impairments (eg, patients recovering from hip fracture) and for patients using bilateral walking aids. ConclusionsAlgorithms applied to the wrist position can detect GSs with high performance in real-world environments. Those periods of interest in real-world recordings can facilitate gait parameter extraction and allow the quantification of gait duration distribution in everyday life. Our findings allow taking informed decisions on alternative positions for gait recording in clinical studies and public health. Abstract

We analyse \'Echelle spectra of $\theta^1$ Ori F obtained by us on six nights unevenly distributed along six years; we identify several hundred spectral lines and measure, for the first time, the star's heliocentric radial velocity. We also collect and discuss previously published photometry of $\theta^1$ OriF . We find that $\theta^1$ Ori F is a Chemically Peculiar (CP) star with overabundant silicon and phosphorus, and possibly other elements as well. From the singly ionised Fe, Cr and Ti lines we estimate its spectral type to be between B7 and B8. The radial velocity of $\theta^1$ Ori F is possibly marginally variable, with an average of $24 \pm 4.2$ kms, (standard deviation), in good agreement with the mean radial velocity of the Orion Nebula Cluster members, and about 5 kms smaller than the average of the other Trapezium components. We cast doubt on the coeval nature of this star relative to the other Trapezium components, and present arguments that almost certainly exclude its membership to the Orion Trapezium. $\theta^1$ Ori F turns out to be enigmatic in several respects, and is probably an important link for understanding the evolutionary stage at which the CP phenomenon sets on., Comment: 13 pages, 2 tables, 6 figures, to be published in MNRAS

Abstract

Corrosion inhibitors are widely used as an important tool for the prevention and remediation of different materials exposed to corrosive industrial processes. Corrosion inhibitors are usually added to acid pickling solutions to reduce the deterioration of metallic materials and particularly, corrosion due to hydrochloric acid. In this work, three bis-Schiff bases (BS2, BS4 and BS8) were synthesized and characterized using spectroscopic methods, and their anti-corrosive effects on AISI 1020 carbon steel in a hydrochloric acid solution were studied using gravimetric and electrochemical techniques and quantum chemical methods. The results showed that all substances act as potential corrosion inhibitors as BS8 exhibited the highest efficiency (98%) of all methods. The compounds adsorbed on the metal surface were as per the El-Awady adsorption isotherm. Morphological aspects of the metal were observed upon applying SEM, and the theoretical results acquired from the quantum chemical calculation for molecular properties and the Fe(110) surface adsorption proved to be compatible with the experimental results.

Abstract We compute the gluon transverse-momentum-dependent fragmentation function (TMDFF) at next-to-leading order (NLO) into heavy quarkonium in the color-octet S 1 8 3 $$ {}^3{S}_1^{\left[8\right]} $$ channel, based on the NRQCD factorization approach. The spurious rapidity divergences are explicitly shown to cancel in a well-defined TMDFF, which incorporates the needed soft factor. We also compute the integrated gluon FF at NLO in the same S 1 8 3 $$ {}^3{S}_1^{\left[8\right]} $$ channel, and show that the matching coefficient of the TMDFF onto the FF at large transverse momentum is the expected one. These results are relevant to perform precise and sensible phenomenological studies of transverse-momentum spectra of quarkonium production, for which the production mechanism through fragmentation plays a relevant role, like in the future Electron-Ion Collider.

Background: Minerals are important for animals in many biological functions. There is scarce information however about micromineral content in the blood of South American camelids under their prevalent production system. Aim: This study aims to determine whole blood selenium (Se) and serum zinc (Zn) concentrations of grazing alpacas at three different physiological states in the Peruvian Andean Highland. Methods: Blood samples were collected for measurement of whole blood Se and serum Zn concentrations from fifteen female alpacas at late gestation, peripartum, and late lactation, as well as their respective offspring, for them only two times were taken it account (ten days after birth and late lactation). The female alpacas at the beginning had a body weight of 47.5 ± 8 kg and an estimated age of 4.03 ± 0.93 years. Se and Zn content of pastures consumed by alpacas also were determined. The samples were taken during three different months according to the productive calendar of the alpacas. Results: The content of Se and Zn of the diet selected by alpacas met the requirements for the physiological states they go through in comparison with literature references. Serum Zn concentration of female alpacas was higher in peripartum (0.26 µg/ml), compared to late gestation and late lactation (P [Open Vet J 2023; 13(11.000): 1451-1457]

Abstract

Objectives: To summarize evidence-based cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) treatment and propose clinical interventions for adult patients with obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Methods: The literature on CBT interventions for adult OCD, including BT and exposure and response prevention, was systematically reviewed to develop updated clinical guidelines for clinicians, providing comprehensive details about the necessary procedures for the CBT protocol. We searched the literature from 2013-2020 in five databases (PubMed, Cochrane, Embase, PsycINFO, and Lilacs) regarding study design, primary outcome measures, publication type, and language. Selected articles were assessed for quality with validated tools. Treatment recommendations were classified according to levels of evidence developed by the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association. Results: We examined 44 new studies used to update the 2013 American Psychiatric Association guidelines. High-quality evidence supports CBT with exposure and response prevention techniques as a first-line treatment for OCD. Protocols for Internet-delivered CBT have also proven efficacious for adults with OCD. Conclusion: High-quality scientific evidence supports the use of CBT with exposure and response prevention to treat adults with OCD.

Abstract

The aim of this study is to investigate the effect of different nickel concentrations and light in combination with storage conditions and storage time on the seed germination ability of two serpentine-endemic nickel hyperaccumulating species (Bornmuellera emarginata and B. tymphaea). The seeds of both species were collected from natural populations in the Pindus Mountain range, Greece in early July and stored in a refrigerator (4°C) and in laboratory conditions (22°C). The seeds were exposed to a range of nickel concentrations typical of non-ultramafic ‒ ultramafic gradient in two light environments (12 h photoperiod and continuous darkness). The nickel concentration only had a significant effect on B. emarginata, decreasing its seed germination rate with increasing Ni concentrations. The storage temperature significantly affected the germination percentage of both species and it was higher at 4°C compared to 22°C. A higher germination rate (> 60%) was observed for 5‒8-month-old seeds, but both species generally showed significantly higher germination rates in the tests conducted seven months after seed ripening in the field. A higher germination rate was observed in a 12-hour photoperiod than in continuous darkness only for B. tymphaea. This study provides guidelines on the germination capacity of two obligate nickel hyperaccumulators with a potential for use in agromining systems.

Abstract

Introduction: Single-nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) rs9939609 in the FTO gene has been associated with dietary intake and appetite traits, mainly in participants with obesity; however, it remains widely unexplored in normal weight participants. Thus, the aims of this study were (1) to compare the changes in subjective appetite sensations, ghrelin, and insulin concentrations according to the SNP rs9939609 T>A in FTO and (2) to compare dietary intake between rs9939609 genotype groups in normal weight young participants. Methods: We conducted a quasi-experimental study involving 88 normal weight participants to analyze subjective perception of appetite, hormonal response for hunger and satiety, and dietary intake according to the rs9939609 SNP. Participants received a standardized single breakfast. Visual analogue scales (VAS) were utilized for assessing the subjective perception of appetite at fasting and immediately after breakfast and at 30, 60, 90, and 120 min postprandially. Glucose, lipid profile, ghrelin, and insulin were measured at fasting and at 120 min after breakfast. Dietary intake was assessed with a 3-day food record. The SNP was determined by allelic discrimination with TaqMan probes. To compare dietetic, biochemical, and the subjective appetite sensations, Student t test, ANCOVA test, and the repeated measures ANOVA were used. The linear regression model and the linear mixed model were used for the association analysis. Pearson correlation was used to test the correlation between two quantitative variables. Results: A total of 88 people participated, 81.8% were female, with a mean body mass index of 21.8 ± 2.0 kg/m2 and a mean age of 20.6 ± 2.0. Genotype frequencies of the rs9939609 SNP were 52% for the TT allele and 48% for the TA/AA. The subjective perception of appetite named hunger, fullness, satiety, desire to eat, and prospective food consumption were similar between genotypes of the rs9939609. Participants with the TA/AA genotype showed a higher intake of added sugar (p = 0.039) than TT participants. No differences were found in ghrelin, insulin, glucose, or lipid parameters between genotypes. Conclusion: Carriers of the A allele from FTO gene SNP rs9939609 may have an increased preference for foods, specifically for added sugars.
