Apical membranes of Madin-Darby canine kidney (MDCK) cells have been shown to have a low permeability to water but their permeability to nonelectrolytes has not been investigated. In this study, it was shown that MDCK cells have a water-tight epithelial apical membrane. There were no differences in paracellular water flow among the cells. Membrane solute permeability was low, consistent with results for intact epithelial cells.
