Mentha longifolia (L.) L., also known as wild mint, is a perennial herbaceous plant that belongs to the Lamiaceae family. This study aimed to investigate the effects of essential oil of M. longifolia (MLEO) on oxidative stress and inflammatory responses in the liver and kidneys in the context of drug-induced liver injury caused by the anti-TB drugs rifampicin, isoniazid, and pyrazinamide (INH-RIF-PZA). The chemical composition of MLEO was characterized using GC/MS analysis, which revealed the presence of pulegone, trans-p-menthan-3-one, piperitenone, and β-caryophyllene as its major volatile constituents. An INH/RIF/PZA mixture was administered to Wistar rats for 30 days, and silymarin was administered as a standard drug. MLEO was administered p.o. at doses of 50 mg and 100 mg/kg b.w. Both doses of the MLEO therapy effectively regulated all biochemical indicators of hepatic impairment and reduced the damage caused by the INH/RIF/PZA mixture. It may be deduced that MLEO has the ability to protect organs against INH/RIF/PZA-induced damage and could potentially be a valuable natural remedy for treating anti-TB-induced liver and kidney injuries. Essential oils and their major compounds have been studied to protect stored grains, especially for the control of insects. In this context, this research aimed to investigate the fumigation and contact toxicities of the essential oil of Piper hispidinervum C. DC. (Piperaceae) (sin. Piper hispidum Sw.) to Callosobruchus maculatus adult individuals and the effect on insect progeny. We also assessed the essential oil's effect on stored-cowpea quality. The fumigation bioassay used essential oil at 14.3, 57.1, 100.0, 142.9, and 185.7 µL/L of air, whereas the contact bioassay tested concentrations of 60, 80, 100, 120, and 140 µL/kg. Insect mortality was appraised after four days (fumigation) or one day (contact). In turn, oviposition and emergence rates were evaluated after seven (fumigation) or fifty (contact) days of storage. Grain quality was also analyzed after 50 days of storage. Safrole was confirmed as the primary compound of the essential oil. P. hispidinervum essential oil proved its fumigant and contact toxicities to C. maculatus adult individuals. The concentrations lethal to 50 and 95% of the population were, respectively, 91.23 and 242.59 µL/L of air (fumigation) and 101.51 and 208.52 µL/kg of cowpeas (contact). In both application forms, C. maculatus oviposition and progeny rates declined with the increase in the essential oil concentration. Mentha spp. are commonly used for the production of tea and for the extraction of essential oils (EOs). The key factor of mint quality is the content and composition of the EO. Health-promoting compounds such as menthol are desirable, whereas the presence of potentially health-damaging compounds such as menthofuran should be avoided. This study examines the effect of shading on the EO content and composition of three Mentha genotypes (Mentha × piperita 'Multimentha', Mentha × piperita 'Fränkische Blaue' and Mentha rotundifolia 'Apfelminze'). The Mentha genotypes were cultivated in field trials for two years (2022–2023). Each genotype was shaded with a shading net (50% photosynthetic active radiation (PAR) reduction), and a control without shading was prepared. EO content was determined by steam distillation and EO composition was characterized by GC-MS analysis. Furthermore, biomass, vegetation indices (VIs) and the electron transport rate (ETR) were analyzed. While shading led to higher plant heights, higher EO content and a slightly reduced amount of undesired EO compounds, the unshaded control yielded a higher biomass accumulation. The drying of medicinal and aromatic plants (MAPs) is one of the main preservation methods for these products that can prolong their shelf life, if performed properly. The current study aimed to examine the effects of different drying conditions (sun, shade, and oven drying at 42 °C) on the quality characteristics of Thymus capitatus, Mentha piperita, and Sideritis cypria; their essential oil (EO) yield; and their biological properties (antioxidant and antibacterial activities). According to the results of the current study, oven drying resulted in faster moisture loss for all investigated species and slightly darker products. For T. capitatus, sun drying resulted in higher EO carvacrol content, whereas EOs obtained from shade and oven drying (at 42 °C) presented high total phenolic content and great antimicrobial activity. For M. piperita, shade drying resulted in a higher EO yield and higher iso-menthone content, whilst the EO obtained from oven-dried mint plants presented great antibacterial activity against the investigated foodborne pathogens. S. cypria plants dried in an air-ventilated oven produced an EO rich in β-caryophyllene and α-pinene, which also presented great antioxidant and antibacterial activity. The findings of the current study indicate that traditional drying methods, such as sun and shade, can result in good-quality dried MAPs that can yield EOs with significant biological activities, along with minimum energy consumption and lower carbon dioxide production (lower environmental carbon footprint), as opposed to oven drying. Essential oils (EOs) are mixtures of volatile organic compounds that mediate plant interactions and are also appreciated for their biological properties in aromatic plants. However, the study of EOs in wild plants with biological activity has been neglected. Ipomoea murucoides is a wild species with allelopathic and insecticide activities; however, the climate factors associated with EOs and their role in intra- and interspecific interactions are still unknown. We investigated the effects of temperature, rain, and solar irradiance for two years on the EOs of I. murucoides and documented the effect of herbivory (without, <20%, >20%, and mechanical damage) on their composition. We evaluated the receptivity to possible infochemicals in conspecific and congeneric neighbors to I. murucoides plants exposed to methyl jasmonate (MeJA), herbivory by Ogdoecosta biannularis and without an elicitor. We measured the stomatal density and aperture in the second leaf generation of the neighbor plants. The year and herbivory >20% affected the composition of EOs. Nerolidol could be a biological marker for herbivory. We concluded that herbivory and rain irregularity contribute to EOs changing. The response in the stomatal density in plants not consumed by I. pauciflora but near I. murucoides under MeJA or herbivory gives evidence of interspecific plant–plant communication. Background: Melaleuca species (family Myrtaceae) are characterized by their wide-ranging applications as antimicrobials and in skin-related conditions. Herein, we estimated the volatile profile and biological significance of M. rugulosa (Link) leaves for the first time supported by a dereplication protocol. Materials and methods: Volatile components were extracted using hydrodistillation (HD), supercritical fluid (SF), and headspace (HS) techniques and identified using GC/MS. The variations among the three extracts were assessed using principal component analysis and orthogonal partial least square discriminant analysis (OPLS-DA). The extracted volatiles were tested for radical scavenging activity, anti-aging, and anti-hyperpigmentation potential. Finally, disc diffusion and broth microdilution assays were implemented to explore the antibacterial capacity against Streptococcus pyogenes, Staphylococcus aureus, Clostridium perfringens, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Results: The yield of the SF technique (0.8%) was three times higher than HD. GC/MS analysis revealed that the oxygenated compounds are the most proponents in the three extracts being 95.93% (HD), 80.94% (HS), and 48.4% (SF). Moreover, eucalyptol (1,8-cineol) represents the major component in the HD-EO (89.60%) and HS (73.13%) volatiles, while dl-α-tocopherol (16.27%) and α-terpineol (11.89%) represent the highest percentage in SF extract. Regarding the bioactivity profile, the HD-EO and SF-extract showed antioxidant potential in terms of oxygen radical absorbance capacity, and β- carotene assays, while exerting weak activity towards DPPH. In addition, they displayed potent anti-elastase and moderate anti-collagenase activities. The HD-EO exhibited potent anti-tyrosinase activity, while the SF extract showed a moderate level compared to tested controls. OPLS-DA and dereplication studies predicted that the selective antibacterial activity of HD-EO to S. aureus was related to eucalyptol, while SF extract to C. perfringens was related to α-tocopherol. Conclusions: M. rugulosa leaves are considered a vital source of bioactive volatile components that are promoted for controlling skin aging and infection. We evaluated the toxicity and sublethal effects of essential oil (Mentha pulegium L.) and its nanoformulation against greenhouse whitefly, Trialeurodes vaporariorum, which is one of the most destructive pests of a wide range of crops. The essential oil was extracted from the plant by steam distillation using a Clevenger apparatus, and 14 chemical components of M. pulegium were identified using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. The results illustrated that monoterpenoids were main characterized components including pulegone (%66), menthofren (%10.54), 1, 8 Cineole (%8.36), betapenin (%3.49) and limonene (%2.01). The nanoformulation was characterized using dynamic light scattering (DLS), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), revealing that the particles were spherical in shape with an average size of 156.40 nm. The leaf dipping was used for the bioassays. The obtained LC50 and LC25 values of treatments indicated that the nanoformulation of essential oil (LC50: 2418.96 and LC25: 1724. 25 ppm) was more toxic than the pure of M. pulegium oil (LC50: 3223.083 and LC25: 779.439 ppm ppm) against greenhouse whitefly adults after 24 h. The life table data were analyzed based on the age-stage, two-sex life table theory using computer program of TWOSEX–MSChart. Also, the sublethal concentration (LC25) of its nanoformulation led to delaying in preadult stage and decreased the adult longevity, and fecundity compared to treatments. Moreover, the sublethal concentration of either M. pulegium oil or its nanoformulation affected the population growth parameters of T.vaporariorum compared to the control. However, the net reproductive rate (R0), intrinsic rate of increase (r), finite rate of increase (λ), of adults who exposed to the nanoformulation was lower than the pure form of M. pulegium. The overall results demonstrated that the nanoformulation of M. pulegium has the most lethal and sublethal effects on greenhouse whitefly compared with the pure form of essential oil which can be consider in integrated pest management program (IPM) of this pest. This research study focused on determining the lethal concentrations of essential oils extracted from O. basilicum L. Mentha piperita L. Origanum vulgare L. and Thymus vulgaris L. against the two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae). This notorious agricultural pest wreaks havoc on various plants, causing widespread damage worldwide, as well as their blends and major compounds, using the fumigation method. GC-MS identified the essential oils and major compounds. The essential oils of O. basilicum, M. piperita, O. vulgare, and T. vulgaris had estragole (91.8%), menthol (39.11%), carvacrol (76,8%), and thymol (45,76%) as major compounds, respectively. The most toxic LC50 value was observed with O. basilicum essential oil (8.02 μL.L−1). Blends 7, 8, and 11 showed better results in terms of mite toxicity. Tick control mainly depends on using chemical acaricides that have led to the emergence of resistant tick populations along with environmental hazards. Natural alternatives including essential oils are now widely used to avoid the undesirable effects of chemicals on human, animals and environment. In this study, three commercial oils (myrrh, patchouli, and cypress) and their nanoemulsions (NEs) were tested against Rhipicephalus sanguineus sensu lato unfed adults. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) were used to characterize the nanoemulsions. Four concentrations with three replicates were used in the bioassay of oils and NEs against ticks using an adult immersion test. Furthermore, a toxicity study of the three oils and their NEs using normal fibroblast cells (BJ-1) was performed. TEM revealed particle size ranges from 29 to 211 nm with spherical droplets. The droplet size and polydispersity index were (29.30 nm & 0.367), (211.6 nm & 0.221) and (164.2 nm & 0.237) for myrrh NE, patchouli NE, and cypress NE, respectively. Myrrh and patchouli oils recorded high acaricidal activity followed by cypress oil with LC50 value 5 days after treatment of 9.01, 12.40, and 15.21%, respectively. The acaricidal efficacy of oil was potentiated in the NEs form which was proved by the reduction in LC50 values that were recorded 7 days after treatment 4.17, 8.57, and 5.04%, for myrrh, patchouli, and cypress NE, respectively. As an alternative for lab animals, we applied the cytotoxicity of myrrh, patchouli, and cypress on normal fibroblast cells. The oils showed low cytotoxic activity of 10.6, 21.5, and 23.6% for Myrrh, Patchouli, and Cypress, respectively. The nanoemulsion was revealed to be safe for normal cells up to a concentration of 0.62% (cytotoxicity%= 24.4, 34.4, and 16.3%, respectively), and the moderate cytotoxic effect appeared at around a concentration of 1.25% (cytotoxicity%= 42.2%, 57.0%, and 36.8% respectively). In conclusion, the three oils and their NEs have good acaricidal activity against Rhipicephalus sanguineus unfed adults. Spices played crucial and variable roles in traditions, culture, history, religious ceremonials and festivals along with fetching food flavor and microbial protection globally due to presence of structurally unique and multi-natured chemotypes. Their existence in dishes portrayed key roles in improving shelf life by regulating spoilage of cuisine with different synergistic mechanism. Histo-anatomically (A) sowa exhibited distinguished cellular attributes which created remarkable differences with T. ammi. HPTLC chemometrics of both fruits revealed several peaks for active metabolomics with unique isocratic combination of menstruum. GC-MS study of hydro-distillate exhibited presence of monoterpenic cyclic and aromatic hydrocarbons, alcoholic and ketonic groups along with phenolic derivative that covers majorly 90% of total metabolites. Combined essential oils (EOs 1 + 2) of both fruits showed excellent antimicrobial activity against various clinical pathogenic strains such as K. pneumoniae at 10 µL/mL, S. aureus at 2.5 µL/mL, E. coli and E. faecalis at 1.25 µL/mL, and MRSA and Bcereus at 0.625 µL/mL and (C) albicans at 0.312 µL/mL as the MIC. The antioxidant study of (EOs 1 + 2) with maximum inhibition percentage to DPPH assay was 84.02 ± 1.05 at 100 µg/mL, and minimal inhibition was 72.31 ± 0.63 at 5 µg/mL with IC50 value 4.69 ± 0.22 µg/mL, while ABTS assay extreme was 79.15 ± 2.14 µg/mL and minimal was 67 ± 1.34 with the IC50 value of 18.37 ± 0.15 µg/mL, in superoxide assay uppermost inhibition was 81.03 ± 0.27 µg/mL and lowest was at 65.16 ± 3.15 with the IC50 value 16.46 ± 0.54, and H2O2 radical scavenging activity, predominant value was 78.01 ± 0.47 and least was 64.1 ± 2.01 with IC50 15.58 ± 0.34. These comparative key diagnostic features and synergistic effect of multicomponent natural antimicrobials will provide profound intellect of ancient utility and further scientists to explore their multiple mechanistic modality and application in food and beverages industry. Agarwood essential oil (AEO) has gained attention from healthcare industries due to its numerous pharmacological properties. However, a comprehensive understanding of the chemical composition and its cytotoxic property is lacking. The objective of this study was to investigate the chemical profile as well as the cytotoxic concentration range of AEO derived from Aquilaria sinensis agarwood. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) was employed to identify the AEO components. Results showed that sesquiterpenes and sesquiterpenoids constitute 95.85% of the AEO. Among the major compounds identified are allo-aromadendrene (13.04%), dihydro-eudesmol (8.81%), α-eudesmol (8.48%), bulnesol (7.63%), τ-cadinol (4.95%), dehydrofukinone (3.83%), valerenol (3.54%), cis-nerolidol (2.75%), agarospirol (2.72%), dehydrojinkoh-eremol (2.53%), selina-3,11-dien-9-al (2.36%), guaiol (2.12%) and caryophyllene oxide (2.0%). The presence of volatile quality marker compounds such as 10-epi-ϒ-eudesmol, aromadendrane, β-agarofuran, α-agarofuran, γ-eudesmol, agarospirol and guaiol, with no contaminants detected, indicates that the extracted AEO is of high purity. Interestingly, the AEO displayed moderate to high toxicity in brine shrimp lethality test (BLST). All studied tumor cell lines (MDA-MB-231, HepG2, B16F10) exhibited varying degrees of sensitivity to AEO, which resulted in time and dose-dependent reduction of cell proliferation. Moreover, flow cytometry analysis revealed that AEO could induce apoptosis in treated HepG2 cells. BACKGROUND RESULTS CONCLUSION This study used single‐factor experiments and response surface methodology to optimize ultrasound time (10–50 min), particle size (0–80 mesh) and extraction time (60–180 min) for the ultrasound‐assisted extraction of rosemary essential oil (REO). The resulting REO (0–2.5%, w/w) was then incorporated into citrus pectin (CP) to prepare CP/REO composite films before determining their microstructure, mechanical, barrier and antioxidant properties, alongside their ability to improve the shelf life of chilled beef.A sonication time of 41 min, a crushing degree of 40 mesh and an extraction time of 135 min were optimum for extracting 1.91% of REO, with the essential oil also showing good antioxidant activity. Characterization of the composite film further revealed that CP had an excellent film‐forming ability and that REO was uniformly distributed in the pectin matrix through hydrogen bonding. The film displayed optimum mechanical and barrier properties at an REO concentration of 1.5% which also significantly enhanced antioxidant activity. Furthermore, the CP/1.5 REO film reduced the total viable count, delayed oxidative rancidity and maintained good color during beef storage, thereby extending the latter's shelf life by 6 days.The novel food packaging film could successfully maintain the quality of chilled meat. © 2024 Society of Chemical Industry. Background: Achillea fragrantissima (F. Asteraceae) is traditionally used to treat skin infections and inflammation. The present work intended to prepare essential oils (EOs) from A. fragrantissima aerial parts growing widely in Egypt and investigate its antibacterial activity against skin-related pathogens and in vitro cell-based anti-inflammatory activity. Methods: EOs of the fresh aerial parts were extracted by hydrodistillation (HD), microwave-assisted hydrodistillation (MAHD), and head-space (HS), while those of the dried ones were prepared by supercritical fluid (SF). The result EOs were analyzed using GC/MS. The antibacterial activity was evaluated alongside Pseudomonas aeruginosa ATCC 9027, Escherichia coli ATCC 8739, Staphylococcus aureus ATCC 25923, Streptococcus pyogenes ATCC 12344, Clostridium perfringens ATCC 13124 by agar diffusion, microwell dilution, and biofilm formation tests. The anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated by measuring tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-α), interleukin 2 (IL-2), and 6 (IL-6) in lipopolysaccharides (LPS)- stimulated RAW 264.7 cells using ELISA assays in addition, expression of nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) was measured via western blot. Results: The SF method gave the highest EO yield (1.50 mL v/w). Oxygenated components constituted the highest percentage in the four methods, 84.14, 79.21, 73.29 and 33.57% in the HS, HD, MAHD, and SF, respectively. Moreover, variation in the amount of identified compounds was apparent; in HS EO α-thujone (29.37%), artemisia ketone (19.59%), and santolina alcohol (14.66%) are major components, while α-thujone (20.38%) and piperatone (12.09%) were significant in HD. Moreover, (+)-spathulenol (12.22%) and piperatone (10.48%) were significant in MAHD, while piperatone (14.83%) and β-sitosterol (11.07%) were significant in SF EO. HD, MAHD, and SF EOs exhibited susceptibility against P. aeruginosa (IZ = 9–14 mm), E. coli (11–13 mm), and C. perfringens (IZ = 10–14 mm) in agar diffusion assay. MAHD EOs demonstrated potent growth inhibition (MICs = 0.25–2 mg/mL), followed by HD EOs (MICs = 13–52 mg/mL) to all tested microorganisms in well microdilution assay. Also, they exert MBC values equal to or higher than the MICs. Furthermore, SF EOs inhibited the biofilm formation of all tested microorganisms by 65.12—80.84%. Specifically, MAHD and HD EOs efficiently suppress the biofilm of S. pyogenes (77.87%) and P. aeruginosa (60. 29%), respectively. Ultimately, HD and SF EOs showed anti-inflammatory activity by suppressing the TNF-α, IL-2, and IL-6 release and iNOS expression in LPS-stimulated RAW 264.7 macrophages. Conclusion: A. fragrantissima EO is rich in oxygenated volatile compounds with antibacterial and anti-inflammatory activities. Background: As climate change and water scarcity increasingly threaten agricultural productivity, enhancing plant resilience to drought has attracted great attention. This study explored the potential of combining Fe2O3 nanoparticles (FeNPs), endophytic bacteria (EB), and endophytic fungi (EF) to boost drought tolerance in Thymus vulgaris. The research aimed to assess how these combined treatments affect the plant's physiological responses and chemical composition under drought stress. Results: A factorial experiment was designed using completely randomized design (CRD) method, incorporating four irrigation levels [100%, 75%, 50%, and 25% field capacity (FC)], four FeNPs concentrations (0, 0.5, 1, and 1.5 mg L−1), and three endophyte types (control, bacteria, and fungi). After extracting, purifying, identifying, and screening EB and EF from nine Lamiaceae species, the endophytes Azospirillum lipoferum and Aspergillus oryzae isolated from Salvia mirzayanii exhibited the highest drought resistance. The highest amounts of TFM (45.45 g) and TDM (21.56 g) were obtained using the combination of EB and FeNPs at 1 mg L−1 under irrigation with 100% FC. At 25% FC, EB treatment increased the activities of polyphenol oxidase (PPO) and phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL) by 62.12% and 18.23% compared to the control, respectively. In addition, under optimal humidity conditions, FeNP concentrations were higher than 0.5 mg L−1 leading to a decrease in PPO activity. At 25% FC, the highest content of total phenols was observed with a 37.5% increase under EB treatment using 1 mg L−1 of FeNPs, while the highest content of total flavonoids showed a 62.72% increase under EF treatment with 0.5 mg/L of FeNPs. The highest level of p-coumaric acid was obtained under EF (34.27% compared to control). At 25% FC, EB and FeNPs (1 mg L−1) increased the level of caffeic acid in thyme plants by 24.70% and 10.08%, respectively. In addition, inoculation with EB increased (11.9%) the content of ferulic acid in plants and the application of FeNPs as a foliar spray decreased the level of ferulic acid in thyme plants. The highest essential oil percentage at 25% FC was observed after inoculation with EF and FeNPs (0.5 mg L−1), resulting in significant increases of 14.7% and 82.12%, respectively, compared to the control. A decrease in irrigation level led to an increase in the percentage of essential oil in thyme plants while decreasing dominant essential oil compounds, thymol, and carvacrol. The levels of thymol and carvacrol in the essential oil were not affected by the interaction effects of drought stress, endophytes, and FeNPs. EF and FeNPs (1.5 mg L−1), respectively, caused significant increases of 17.44% and 29.87% compared to the control in the amount of thymol and significant increases of 13.75% and 31.01% in the amount of carvacrol. All FeNPs concentrations decreased the concentrations of ferulic acid, FeNPs (1.5 mg L−1) and PPO; these particles act as abiotic stressors at sub-toxic levels and become phytotoxic at higher concentrations. Conclusions: It seems that combining endophytes with FeNPs showed promise in enhancing drought tolerance in T. vulgaris. These treatments have significantly contributed to the production of enzymatic antioxidants, flavonoids, and phenolic compounds, leading to a reduction in the amounts of oxidants. At the same time, they have improved both the quality and quantity of essential oils. Sleep disorders are becoming more and more common, leading to many health problems. However, most of current available medications to treat sleep disorders are addictive and even impair cognitive abilities. Therefore, it is important to find a natural and safe alternative to treat sleep disorders. In this study, twenty-four 8-week-old male ICR mice (25 ± 2 g) were equally divided into three groups: the control group (gavage of 0.9% saline), the eucalyptus essential oil (EEO) group (10 mg/kg B.W.), and the diazepam group (1 mg/kg B.W.). Firstly, open field test and sleep induction test were used to determine the sedative-hypnotic effect of EEO. Secondly, the effect of EEO on neurotransmitters in the mice brain was determined. Finally, based on the gut microbiota-brain axis (GMBA), the effect of EEO on the intestinal flora of mice was explored. It was found that EEO significantly reduce the activity and prolong the sleep duration of mice, exhibiting a good sedative-hypnotic effect. In the brain, EEO could increase the levels of sleep-promoting neurotransmitters, such as glutamine, Gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), glycine, tryptophan, N-acetylserotonin, and 5-hydroxyindoleacetic acid (5-HIAA). In the intestine, EEO was found to increase the diversity of gut microbes, the abundance of short chain fatty acid (SCFA) producing flora, and the abundance of functional flora synthesizing GABA and glycine neurotransmitters. These studies suggested that EEO exerted a sedative-hypnotic effect by acting on gut microbes and neurotransmitters in the brain. AbstractThe objective of this research work was to assess Teucrium luteum subsp. flavovirens essential oil (EOTL), for the first time, as novel and eco-friendly corrosion inhibitor for carbon steel (CS) in 1.0 M HCl medium. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS), potentiodynamic polarization (PDP) and surface analysis were employed to assess the effectiveness of the EOTL. The findings indicate that the EOTL reduces the corrosion of CS in hydrochloric acid and offered an inhibition efficiency (IE) of 91% at a dosage of 2.00 g/L at 298 K. The PDP data showed that EOTL behaved as a mixed-type corrosion inhibitor. The effect of immersion time and temperature on the corrosion inhibition performance of EOTL was also studied. It was found that the IE increased only up to 24 h and decreased with prolonged immersion time. In addition, the IE diminished with increasing temperature. The EOTL molecules adsorbed on the CS surface following Langmuir adsorption isotherm, with an adsorption energy ranging from −16 to −27 kJ/mol, an indication of physico-chemical adsorption mechanisms. The SEM/EDX results provide evidence of the presence of a protective film of the inhibitor on the surface of the CS. Theoretical studies using DFT, Monte Carlo simulations, molecular dynamics simulations and mean square displacement were conducted to given insight into the contributions of the four main components of EOTL. This work not only introduces a sustainable alternative to conventional corrosion inhibitors but also provides a robust understanding of the underlying mechanisms, hence contributing to advancement in corrosion science. ABSTRACT Cold atmospheric pressure plasma (CAPP) comprises an ensemble of ionized gas, neutral particles, and/or reactive species. Electricity is frequently used to produce CAPP via a variety of techniques, including plasma jets, corona discharges, dielectric barrier discharges, and glow discharges. The type and flow rates of the carrier gas(es), temperature, pressure, and vacuum can all be altered to control the desired properties of the CAPP. Since a few decades ago, CAPP has become a widely used technology with applications in every walk of life. The plasma activated liquid mediums like water, ethanol, and methanol have been merged as novel sterilizers. With recent advancements in material science, particularly work on metal–organic frameworks (MOFs), essential oils, and agricultural technologies, CAPP has become a vital component of these advancements. Likewise, CAPP has been found as a green and benign technology to induce early seed germination and plant development. This review covers the critical components of CAPP, the production of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, and mechanisms by which CAPP‐based technologies are applied to agricultural products, MOFs, and essential oils. Aromatherapy using essential oils (EOs) is well known for its beneficial effects on mental health and neuroprotection. However, the significant molecular mechanisms have not yet been identified. Recent studies have identified a decrease in glucose uptake as a common feature across various neurodegenerative diseases (NDDs), leading to mitochondrial dysfunction and excessive autophagy. This suggests that glucose may serve not only as an energy source but also as a therapeutic target for NDDs. Using SH-SY5Y neuroblast-like cells and the glucose uptake inhibitor BAY-876, we demonstrated that glucose depletion promoted autophagy. To discover the potential therapeutics that modulate glucose metabolism, we obtained EO from Pinus koraiensis Siebold & Zucc. (PKSZ) using steam distillation. PKSZ-EO upregulated mRNA expression of SLC2A2, SLC2A3, and SLC2A4, leading to increased glucose uptake in SH-SY5Y cells. Furthermore, PKSZ-EO protected SH-SY5Y cells from BAY-876-induced mitochondrial dysfunction, cytostasis, autophagy, and inflammation. Using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, we confirmed the high levels of α-pinene, an inducer of GLUT4 expression, in PKSZ-EO. These results suggest that PKSZ-EO exerts a protective effect against glucose depletion stress, highlighting its potential as a therapeutic agent for NDDs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fractured carbonate reservoirs are significantly developed in the eastern area of the Amu Darya Right Bank. However, their types, distributions, and fracture characteristics remain unclear. This uncertainty complicates reservoir prediction and hampers exploration and development processes. Given the strong correlation between fracture development and productivity, analyzing fractures is crucial. Comprehensive evaluation and prediction methods for fractured reservoirs are essential for advancing the oil and gas industry. Based on core and geological data analyses, it finds that these reservoirs exhibit low porosity and low to ultra-low permeability. By employing conventional logging alongside specialized methods, such as electrical imaging, nuclear magnetic resonance, and far detection logging, fractures and their effectiveness can be identified and evaluated, clarifying the characteristics of reservoir spaces. Constrained by the results from core and logging analyses, seismic single attribute analysis techniques is applied to predict fractures in the HX block of Amu Darya. To mitigate the limitations of single-attribute analysis, utilize a well-supervised BP neural network method for comprehensive fracture prediction. This multi-attribute approach increases the fracture prediction probability from less than 70%–72.7%. By integrating geological understanding and well logging, and considering the influence of lithology and structure on the reservoir, synthesize the fracture prediction results to optimally select favorable areas. Carrots, a globally cultivated root vegetable crop, are renowned for their nutritional and functional properties. However, the deep utilization and development of carrots and their derived products are limited in numerous countries, with a particular deficiency in advanced deep‐processing and transformation technologies. Consequently, the value of carrot products is diminished and resources are wasted. This review explores the nutritional value and characteristics of different carrot varieties, providing a comprehensive overview of the current state of carrot product processing. These products include primary processed products such as minimally processed carrots, dried carrots, pickles, preserves, fruit purees, yoghurt, juice, and essential oils, as well as processed by‐products including functional phytochemical extractions such as carotenoids, polyphenols, dietary fibers, active peptides, and glycoproteins. This review also covers other by‐products, including feeds, fast food boxes, and bioethanol production. Furthermore, cutting‐edge technologies related to carrot processing are discussed. Star anise has been used for a long time in improving human health and curing diseases, owing to its unlimited components with complex chemical structures and a wide range of bioactivities. This study is aimed to investigate the influence of extraction methods (steam distillation, ethanol Soxhlet extraction, supercritical carbon dioxide extraction, subcritical n‐butane extraction) on the yield, aroma properties, chemical composition, and bioactivity of star anise essential oils. Electronic nose detection revealed the essential oils from subcritical extraction exhibited the most intense aroma, while the essential oils from ethanol Soxhlet extraction had a more complex aroma profile. Fourier‐transform infrared analysis showed the presence of benzene rings, carbonyl groups, C=C, and aromatic ether bonds in the essential oils extracted through different methods. The major components were heterocyclic olefins, heterocyclic oxygenates, and aromatic oxygenates, as well as certain amounts of flavonoids and polyphenols. Correlation analysis revealed the relative contents of volatile trans‐anethole, wormwood, d‐limonene, cineole, and trans‐α‐citronelene were strongly associated with the antibacterial activity of the essential oils. Similarly, the contents of volatile components (d‐limonene, cineole) and non‐volatile components (total flavonoids and total polyphenols) were strongly correlated with the DPPH scavenging activity of the essential oils. These results confirm the effectiveness of the ethanol Soxhlet extraction method in retaining the bioactivity of the essential oils. Finally, with a Box–Behnken central composite design of response surface and single‐factor experiments, the optimal extraction conditions for the ethanol Soxhlet method were determined: ultrasonic frequency of 80 kHz, crushing particle size of 60 meshes, liquid–material ratio of 8:1 (mL:g), and ultrasonic time of 35 min. Under these conditions, the essential oil yield was 25.51% ± 0.21%. Overall, these findings highlight the significance of extraction methods in obtaining high‐quality star anise essential oils with desirable aroma properties and potent bioactivities. The purpose of the present research was to prepare a novel biodegradable coating of whey protein (whey) and essential oil of Trachyspermum copticum L. (forms of free (EO) and Pickering emulsion (NEO)) to improve the shelf life of beef. In this study, various microbiological, chemical, and sensory analyses were performed. The results showed that after 18 days, the highest and lowest microbiological counts were related to control samples and whey‐NEO treatments, respectively. The total viable count (TVC) was 8.2 and 6.8 log CFU/g, the total psychrotrophic count (TPC) was 8.5 and 6.7 log CFU/g, and the lactic acid bacteria (LAB) count was 7.7 and 6.5 log CFU/g for control and whey‐NEO treatments, respectively. Chemical analysis of whey‐NEO treatment and control sample were 6.3 and 7.5 for pH, 9.8 and 13.9 meq/kg for PV (peroxide value), 5.45 and 8.85 mg/kg for TBARS (thiobarbituric acid reactive substances), and 25.1 and 39.4 mgN/100 g for TVB‐N (total volatile basic nitrogen), respectively. The best result was associated with the whey‐NEO treatment; consequently, coatings with whey and EO Pickering emulsion should be considered as a potential active coating in the meat industry. The quantity and quality of the active components of plants are strongly influenced by environmental factors. In this regard, dried cumin seeds were collected from four different locations (SaadatShahr (P1) and Sarvestan (P2) from Fars Province and Kashmar (P3) and Sabzevar (P4) from Khorasan), and their essential oils were isolated by Clevenger apparatus and evaluated using GC and GC–MS. In addition, the hypnotic and antinociceptive activities of the cumin EO sample, which had the highest yield and quality, respectively, were assessed via the pentobarbital‐induced loss of righting test and acetic acid‐induced writhing test. Our results showed that the highest amount of EO was present in sample P4 (3.63%), followed by P3 (2.92%), P2 (2.69%), and P1 (2.31%). GC–MS analysis revealed cuminaldehyde (21.31–33.60%), γ‐terpinene (13.68–23.29%), p‐mentha‐1,4‐dien‐7‐al (14.44–20.84%), p‐mentha‐1,3‐dien‐7‐al (10.06–14.02%), β‐pinene (9.32–11.46%), and p‐cymene (3.16–7.89%) were the major constituents in all the populations. Generally, the results showed that the seeds harvested from areas with hotter and drier climates (P3 and P4) had higher EO yields and cuminaldehyde concentrations but had moderate amounts of γ‐terpinene, β‐pinene, and p‐cymene. BACKGROUND: Understanding how pharmaceutical formulas target specific illnesses is crucial for developing effective treatments. Enriching ion channel data is a critical first step in comprehending a formula's mechanism of action. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to explore the effective disease spectrum of the Qi Yu granule formula through network pharmacology analysis and backtracking, and analyze its potential curative effects on liver and spleen system diseases, particularly depression and breast cancer. METHODS: Using pharmacological tools and database analysis, the ion channel data of the formula's components were investigated. The effective disease spectrum was determined, and diseases related to liver and gallbladder, liver depression, and spleen deficiency were identified. Network pharmacology analysis was conducted to backtrack diseases, target gene proteins, and drug compositions. The extraction technology of volatile oil from medicinal herbs was experimentally studied to optimize the preparation process. RESULTS: The effective disease spectrum analysis identified potential curative effects of the Qi Yu granule formula on various diseases, including breast cancer. Backtracking revealed relationships between diseases, target gene proteins, and drug compositions. Experimental studies on volatile oil extraction provided insights into optimizing the preparation process. CONCLUSION: The study underscores the potential therapeutic benefits of the Qi Yu granule formula for liver and spleen system diseases. By integrating network pharmacology analysis and experimental research, this study offers valuable insights into the formulation and efficacy of the Qi Yu granules, paving the way for further exploration and optimization of TCM formulations. Aims Nanoemulsions based on plant essential oils have shown promise as alternatives against fungal pathogens by increasing the solubility and bioavailability of the active compounds of essential oils, which can improve their efficacy and safety. In the present study, we aimed to prepare and characterize nanoemulsions of Lippia origanoides essential oil, and analyze their antifungal activity against C. albicans in planktonic and biofilm form. Additionally, we sought to verify their cytotoxicity. Methods and results Alginate nanoemulsions were prepared with different concentrations of essential oil, sunflower oil, and surfactant to investigate ideal formulations regarding stability and antifungal efficiency. The results showed the nanoemulsions remained stable for longer than 60 days, with acidic pH, particle sizes ranging from 180.17 ± 6.86 nm to 497.85 ± 253.50 nm, zeta potential from −60.47 ± 2.25 to −43.63 ± 12, and polydispersity index from 0.004 to 0.622. The photomicrographs revealed that the addition of sunflower oil influenced the formation of the particles, forming nanoemulsions. The antifungal results of the essential oil and nanoemulsions showed that the MIC ranged from 0.078 to 0.312 mg ml−1. The nanoemulsions were more effective than the free essential oil in eradicating the biofilm, eliminating up to 89.7% of its mass. With regard to cytotoxicity, differences were found between the tests with VERO cells and red blood cells, and the nanoemulsions were less toxic to red blood cells than the free essential oil. This work aimed to evaluate the physical-chemical and microbiological quality of meat sausages formulated with inulin and oregano essential oil as substitutes for fat and sodium chloride. Two treatments were used: T1 – Control and T2–200 g inulin and 10 g oregano essential oil. The addition of inulin provided an increase (p < 0.05) of carbohydrates and a decrease in the fat content of the meat product. This reduction influenced cooking weight loss and emulsion stability. However, moisture, water activity, and pH were not altered. Regarding the microbiological quality of the sausages, all treatments (T1 and T2) showed counts below <3.0 for Coliforms at 45 ºC and <100 for Coagulase-positive staphylococci and Clostridium perfringens. In addition, both treatments showed absence of Salmonella sp. Therefore, inulin and essential oregano oil can be used in the reformulation of healthier emulsified meat products without significant changes in physicochemical properties and with microbiological safety. In this study, we aimed to assess the activity of the essential oils from four Bulgarian oil-bearing roses Rosa damascena Mill., R. alba L., R. centifolia L., and R. gallica L., on the reference strain Mycobacterium tuberculosis H37Rv and clinical M. tuberculosis strains of the Beijing and Latin-American Mediterraneum genotypes. The chemical composition of the essential oils was determined by gas chromatography (GC-FID/MS). Minimal inhibitory concentrations (MIC) were determined using the resazurin method. R. alba oil showed the highest inhibitory activity when tested on all strains of different phylogenetic origins with MIC in the range of 0.16–0.31 mg/mL, while R. gallica oil was the least active (MIC 0.62–1.25 mg/mL). The obtained results show heterogeneity of rose oil action on different mycobacterial strains and we hypothesize that the combined level of geraniol and nerol is a key factor that underlies the antimycobacterial action of the rose oils. Strain Beijing 396 was relatively more susceptible to the rose oils probably due to multiple and likely deleterious mutations in its efflux pump genes. Two clinical MDR strains have likely developed during their previous adaptation to anti-TB drugs certain drug tolerance mechanisms that also permitted them to demonstrate intrinsic tolerance to the essential oils. Further research should investigate a possible synergistic action of the new-generation anti-TB drugs and the most promising rose oil extracts on the large panel of different strains. Background/Objectives: Eucalyptus globulus is a medicinal plant extensively used by the Moroccan population for treating a range of illnesses, especially respiratory conditions. Methods: This study aimed to assess the antioxidant and antibacterial properties of E. globulus essential oil and its individual fractions (F1, F2, and F3). Antioxidant activity was evaluated through iron-reducing power, 2,2′-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic acid) (ABTS), and 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) assays. Antibacterial activity was tested using disk diffusion and dilution methods, supported by molecular docking studies. Furthermore, GC–MS analysis was conducted on the essential oil and its individual fractions. Results: GC–MS analysis identified the major compounds in the essential oil and its fractions as eucalyptol (62.32–42.60%), globulol (5.9–26.24%), o-cymene (6.89–24.35%), cryptone (7.10–15.95%), terpinen-4-ol (2.43–15.24%), and α-pinene (2.46–7.89%). Fraction F3 displayed the highest antioxidant activity in DPPH (IC50 = 3.329 ± 0.054 mg/mL) and ABTS assays (IC50 = 3.721 ± 0.027 mg/mL), while fraction F2 was most effective in the FRAP assay (IC50 = 1.054 ± 0.008 mg/mL). The essential oil and its fractions also showed antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Klebsiella pneumoniae, Enterobacter cloacae, Escherichia coli, and Acinetobacter baumannii. Molecular docking further corroborated these findings, supporting both antioxidant and antibacterial activities. Conclusions: The present findings demonstrate the antioxidant and antimicrobial properties of Eucalyptus globulus essential oil and its fractions, underscoring the need for further research to confirm their medicinal potential and explore pharmaceutical applications. Medicinal plants are a rich source of bioactive compounds that possess pharmacological properties for preventing and treating inflammation-related diseases. Essential oils is a chemical class that contains many bioactive compounds, such as eugenol, which is capable of inhibiting or modulating the inflammatory response. This natural product emerges as a compound that promotes various biological activities, including antioxidant activity, which makes it useful in the food industry. Recently, its pharmacological applications have also been highlighted. Background: Essential oils exhibit several biological activities such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, proliferative, and anti-inflammatory. This study was aimed at investigating the antimicrobial effects and cytotoxic activities of niaouli, palmarosa, and clove essential oils. Methods: Content analyses of these essential oils were carried out by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. The antibacterial activity was screened against methicillin-resistant S. aureus ATCC 43300, P. aeruginosa ATCC 27853, P. aeruginosa PAO1, S. aureus ATCC 25923, and 44 isolates (22 P. aeruginosa isolates, 4 S. aureus isolates, and 18 Staphylococcus spp. isolates) obtained from dogs with previous wound infections who were included in the current study. The antimicrobial effects of essential oils were investigated using disk diffusion and minimum inhibition/bactericidal concentration methods. Additionally, the antibiofilm, protease, elastase, and gelatinase activities of the essential oils were evaluated. Different concentrations of each essential oil ranging from 10 to 1000 µg/mL were also analyzed in terms of cell viability by WST-8 assay in primary canine fibroblast cells. Results: The fibroblast cell viabilities of palmarosa, niaouli, and clove oils at a 1000 µg/mL concentration were 75.4%, 96.39%, and 75.34%, respectively. All the EOs were found to have bactericidal effects with MBCs/MICs of 0.015 to 0.5 µL/mL against P. aeruginosa, Staphylococcus isolates (p < 0.001). Palmarosa was found to have the largest inhibition zone diameter (20.5 ± 6.6, 16.4 ± 2.3) compared to other essential oils in the disk diffusion test against Staphylococcus spp. and P. aeruginosa (p < 0.001). But none of the EOs reduced protease, elastase, and gelatinase activities, which are some of the virulence properties of the tested bacteria. Conclusions: These results showed that palmarosa, niaouli, and clove essential oils act as potential antibacterial agents for dogs against P. aeruginosa, methicillin-resistant S. aureus, and Staphylococcus spp., without damaging the skin. Background: Oral traditional knowledge disseminates the use of young leaves of Vernonanthura tweediana (Asteraceae) as poultice in feverish cases among family farmers in Santa Catarina, Brazil, but there is a lack of phytochemistry and pharmacological studies on this species, especially those related to volatile organic compounds. Methods: In the present study, the dry leaves of V. tweediana were subjected to hydrodistillation for the extraction of essential oil. Sample characterization was conducted using GC-FID and GC-MS. To evaluate anti-inflammatory and immunomodulatory activities, the air pouch method was used, and with the exudate obtained, total and differential leukocyte counts were performed, as well as the quantification of total proteins, interleukin (IL) 1β, IL-6, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF). Results: The essential oil yield extraction was 0.13%, and sesquiterpenes were the main constituents: α-copaene (5.1%), β-caryophyllene (27.77%), α-caryophyllene (15.1%), germacrene D (14.0%), and bicyclogermacrene (13.3%). A sample was subjected to biological tests, with a reduction in leukocyte migration to the inflammatory focus. The immunomodulatory activity was also pronounced, as the oil modulated all cytokine secretions measured when compared to the control. The high concentration of caryophyllenes might explain these findings. Background/Objectives: This study aimed to analyze the chemical composition and biological activities of Artemisia absinthium L. essential oil, focusing on its antioxidant and enzyme inhibition (α-amylase and urease) properties. Additionally, in vitro pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic evaluations were conducted through in silico molecular docking and BOILED-Egg models to assess its therapeutic potential and its potency in treating oxidative-stress-related diseases. Methods: The essential oil was isolated by the hydrodistillation (HD) of fresh plant material, and volatiles released from dried plant material were sampled via headspace solid-phase microextraction (HS-SPME), followed by a phytochemical profiling analysis through the GC-MS tool. Antioxidant capacity was assessed using DPPH, ABTS, FRAP, and nitric oxide scavenging assays, while enzyme inhibition activities were tested against α-amylase and urease. Molecular docking and BOILED-Egg models were used to evaluate compound interactions with NADPH oxidase and predict pharmacokinetic behavior, respectively. Results: HS-SPME and HD yielded 46 and 25 compounds, respectively, primarily terpenoids represented by camphor (26.4%) and cis-davanone (18.0%) in HS-SPME, while in the HD essential oil, cis-davanone (60.2%) and chamazulene (10.8%) were most prevalent. The antioxidant assays showed a strong activity, with a total antioxidant capacity of 821.8 mg ascorbic acid Eq/gm. The essential oil inhibited urease by 86.7% and α-amylase by 81.8%. Molecular docking showed strong binding affinities with NADPH oxidase, supporting the antioxidant results. Conclusions:A. absinthium EO demonstrated potent antioxidant and enzyme inhibitory activities, suggesting its therapeutic potential for treating enzyme-related disorders like diabetes mellitus and its possible use as a cure for many oxidative-stress-related diseases, thus validating the folkloric use of this plant. Background/Objectives: Oreganum vulgare essential oil (OEO) is safe, effective, multifunctional, and widely used. This study aimed to evaluate OEO's chemical composition and antimicrobial activity in vitro against S. aureus and E. coli. Methods: The composition of OEO was determined by gas chromatography–mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Results: Compounds included monoterpenes with known antimicrobial activity, such as 2-menthen-1-ol (36.33%), linalyl acetate (9.26%), terpinene-4-ol (9.01%), 4-thujanol (6.33%), menthen (5.81%), sabinene (5.18%), and carvacrol methyl ether (5.14%). Conclusions: OEO had a strong antimicrobial activity with a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) of 1.90 mg/mL for S. aureus and 0.49 mg/mL for E. coli after 18 h incubation. The minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) was 7.9 mg/mL against S. aureus and 0.99 mg/mL against E. coli. Cerebral activities were measured during 21 essions in NeurOptimal (NO)-trained patients with bruxism. Salivary cortisol levels were quantified for each six training sessions (session 1, 6, 12, 18, 21) in 12 patients with bruxism after performing their pre- and post-NeurOptimal sessions. Their cortisol levels were compared with controls (without stress). We evaluated whether NO overtraining could reduce stress in bruxism after 21 repeated sessions with/without Origanum majorana inhalation by using nasal impregned filters with this essential oil (n = 12). This study enrolled 89 participants (590 salivary samples for cortisol assessment by ELISA ng/mL). Salivary samples were collected at several NO learning sessions (session 1, 6, 12, 18, and 21). In the present study, we assessed whether Origanum majorana essential oil exposure during 21 NO training sessions can promote anxiolytic effects by reducing cortisol levels in Bruxismitle patients or modulate their brain activities. The experimental design also included control subjects without NO training (n = 30) and unstressed participants without bruxism, as well as trained NeurOptimal (n = 5) participants during the 21 sessions, also including control subjects without stress. In our study, NeurOptimal post-training decreased cortisol levels in Bruxismitle patients, reducing stress scores on the Hamilton II scale after 21 NO sessions; finally, Origanum majorana essential oil exposure during NO training could enhance anxiolytic effects of repeated NO in Bruxismitle patients. The parameter divergence as an index of cerebral activity evaluates the reached difference between cerebral activity at pre-learning (PRE) minus post-training (POST) values in Bruxismitle participants with/without Origanum majorana odor exposure during each NO training sessions. As a consequence of NO overtraining, these cerebral activities fluctuate reaching a calm state while anxious states are associated with high divergences. The reduction in divergences when they are close to zero by habituation means a final calm state is reached by NO overtraining, while higher divergences mean anxiogenic states. Given the increasing demand for fruit safety assurance and environmental protection, plant essential oils have gained significant attention as natural alternatives for control of postharvest decay caused by various pathogens. In postharvest management, it is particularly important to effectively control postharvest decay without compromising the quality attributes of fruits. Although oregano essential oil (OEO) has been extensively studied for its antimicrobial properties against various postharvest pathogens, few studies have focused on its interactions with postharvest fruits. In this study, OEO was applied for management of postharvest decay of Pyrus sinkiangensis caused by Penicillium expansum, and its antifungal mechanisms and impacts on the quality attributes of pears were investigated. The OEO exhibited notable inhibitory effects, with determined MIC (0.02%) and MFC (0.04%) against P. expansum, which highlighted its potential as a viable alternative to synthetic fungicides. Our findings revealed that OEO disrupted P. expansum by compromising the integrity of the fungal plasma membrane, as evidenced by changes in plasma membrane permeability and the leakage of cellular components. The OEO treatment significantly reduced weight loss, maintained firmness, and preserved soluble-solid content in the treated pears. In addition, OEO treatment stimulated the intrinsic antioxidant mechanisms of pears, as demonstrated by elevated activities of superoxide dismutase and catalase during storage. This study provides compelling evidence for the antifungal and quality-preserving properties of OEO in the postharvest management of pears, underscoring its potential as an alternative to synthetic fungicides for controlling postharvest decay. Simple Summary: This study evaluates nanoemulsion-based plant essential oil formulations (NEOFs) containing clove and cinnamon oils for controlling poultry ectoparasites in farm conditions. The use of combined essential oils (EOs) is a new technique that can improve their preservative effects while minimizing their sensory impact in foods. The aim of this study was to determine the chemical profile of three essential oils (EOs) extracted from Lavandula stoechas L. (Ls), Thymus zygis L. (Tz), and Eucalyptus camaldulensis Dehnh (Ec) and to evaluate their synergistic antibacterial activity for optimal inhibition against Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, and Staphylococcus aureus using an augmented Simplex centroid mixing scheme. The essential oils were extracted by hydrodistillation and analyzed via gas chromatography–mass spectrometry. Anti-bacterial potency was evaluated by disk diffusion. Chemical analysis revealed the main compounds in Lavandula stoechas (Ls) essential oil: camphor (36.15%), followed by fenchone (16.57%) and Z-8-hydroxy linalool (8.28%). The Thymus zygis (Tz) essential oil is dominated by δ-terpineol (27.64%), δ-3-carene (15.7%), and thymol (14.17%). In contrast, the Eucalyptus camaldulensis (Ec) essential oil contains mainly 1,8-cineole (43.61%), γ-terpinene (11.71%), and α-terpineol (10.58%). The optimal mixture is the binary association of 40% E. camaldulensis EO and 60% T. zygis EO, which provides an effective inhibition diameter (ID) of 13.37 mm to inhibit S. aureus. Furthermore, the formulation of 27% and 73% EOs of E. camaldulensis and T. zygis, respectively, corresponds to the mixture required to achieve the optimum inhibition diameter (ID = 11.55 mm) against E. coli. In addition, the mixture of 29% EO of E. camaldulensis and 71% EO of T. zygis is the optimum mixture to inhibit B. subtilis, with an inhibition diameter of 12.31 mm. These findings highlight the potency of antibacterial formulations of these essential oils and suggest that they might be used as substitutes for conventional drugs to prevent the development of bacteria responsible for serious infections and food spoilage. Water availability and light during the dry and rainy seasons in the Cerrado may influence plants' stomatal movement and the entry of CO2 for organic synthesis, which is the main electron drain. A lower stomatal conductance may contribute to the energy accumulated in the chloroplasts being directed towards the synthesis of compounds, which contributes to the activity of antioxidant enzymes to neutralize reactive oxygen species. Xylopia aromatica is a characteristic Cerrado species, and it is often recommended for recovering degraded areas. This study aimed to investigate the influence of the dry and rainy seasons on the metabolic adjustments of Xylopia aromatica in a portion of the Brazilian savanna in the state of São Paulo. In the rainy season, better photosynthetic performance led to greater investment in essential oil production. In the dry season, the plants may direct part of their reducing sugars to the syntheses of carotenoids and anthocyanins, which may help the antioxidant enzymes to neutralize reactive oxygen species. Carotenoids assist in the dissipation of photosystem energy, which has the potential to cause oxidative stress. During this season, lower stomatal conductance prevented excessive water loss. Plants offer a bountiful source of natural pest control solutions through their essential oils. This research introduces and analyzes an eco-friendly natural essential oil for red flour beetle control. Therefore, the current study was included to show the chemical profile and the insecticidal efficacy of resin essential oil (REO) and its fractions (F1–3), resulting from chromatographic separation, from the plant Schinus molle against Tribolium castaneum adults. The trunk bark resin essential oil and its fractions' composition were analyzed by GC-MS. Overall, 33 constituents with 98.3% of the total EO composition were identified. REO and F1–3 displayed impressive repellent properties at a concentration of 0.12 µL/cm2. After 120 min of exposure, repellency ranged from 73.3% to a remarkable 96.7%. They also exhibited noteworthy fumigant properties, with median lethal doses of LD50 = 120.6–160.8 μL/L. The fractions F1 and F3 showed the most notable topical toxicity at a concentration of 10%, with LD50 values of 8.6% and 5.6%, respectively. Fractions F3 and F2 demonstrated the most effective inhibition of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity, providing insight into their insecticidal mechanisms. Simple Summary: Genetic diversity of the different origin genotypes is one of the most important topics to evaluate the desired properties and select high-yield genotypes. Coriander (Coriandrum sativum L.) is an annual plant native to the Mediterranean region, Western Europe, and Asia that belongs to the Apiaceae (Umbelliferae) family. The fruits and essential oils of coriander are used for spice, folk remedies, perfumery, food, tobacco, soft and alcoholic beverages, and pharmaceutical industries in the different parts of the world. The yield and some quality characteristics of coriander genotypes of different origins should be investigated for the breeding program. In this study, both phenotypic, morphological, and yield values showed wide variations. Also, some analyses, such as cluster, heat map, and PCA analyses, revealed important results for the coriander genotypes. In this study, 119 different coriander genotypes (38 different countries), including 114 genotypes and five cultivars, were undertaken to characterize the genotypes based on phenotypic, morphological, yield, and International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV) properties, along with some chemical properties. The yield components were between 1.34 and 21.49 g for thousand-grain weight, 0.02–9.58 g/plant for fruit yield, 0.01–50.78 g/plant for biological yield, and 8.48–73.36% for harvest index. Similarly, the results of this study revealed significant variations in essential oil (0.05–1.86%v/w) and fixed oil content (10.22–34.03%v/w). The main components of the essential oil were determined as linalool (3.13–45.70%v/v), p-cymene (0.10–15.77%v/v), ɣ-terpinene (0.04–13.80%v/v), while the fixed oil main acids were determined as petroselinic (24.47–87.70%v/v), palmitic (7.13–23.04%v/v), elaidic (1.55–47.44%v/v), and behenic acids (3.17–12.56%v/v). The cluster, heat map, correlation, and principal coordinate (PCA) analyses were conducted to determine the genetic diversity and relationship among the genotypes based on the examined properties. The cluster and heat map analyses showed differences in the same origin genotypes. Petroselinic acid was the major contributing factor for PCA. In present study, the effects of orange peel essential oil and ultrasonic treatment on properties of corn starch based edible coating and films including their effects on the shelf life of citrus (Kinnow) fruits are investigated. The ultrasonic approach and essential oil significantly improves the quality characteristics of edible coating formulations, stability, and rheological behaviour of coating materials by reducing the particle size, including antimicrobial activity. The particle size of the coating materials reduces from 2495 nm (control) to 298.8 nm by ultrasonication treatment with improved stability (−39.251 mV) as well as antimicrobial activity. The tensile strength (720 N) and solubility (32.40%) of the CSEOU edible film are also improved as compared to CSEO and CS edible films. The coating formulation enriched with essential oil and ultrasonic treatment (CSEOU) improves the shelf‐life of Kinnow by retarding weight loss (PLW) and microbial load, as well as maintaining higher acidity (TA), total soluble solids (TSS), and higher antioxidant activity. CSEOU treated samples indicate lowest weight loss (24.57%), pH (3.89) with higher TA (3.999%), firmness (494.229 N), phenolic (26.17 mg 100 g−1), flavonoid (34.11 mg 100 g−1), antioxidant (49.04%), and antimicrobial activity against A. niger, E. coli and S. aureus as compared to other samples. Bacterial canker and bacterial speck are diseases affecting tomato caused by Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis and Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato, respectively. These diseases are considered a serious threat with a strong impact on tomato production and marketing worldwide, especially because of their reduced sensitivity to traditional controls. This work reports the chemical composition of the essential oil (EO) of Psoralea glandulosa and investigates its in vitro antimicrobial activity, along with its main compound, against three strains of Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis (CmVC533, CmVLC78, and CmVQ59) and one strain of Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato (Pst). The results indicate that both the EO and bakuchiol have significant antibacterial capacity, especially the EO, which reaches a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) between 4–16 µg/mL and 128 µg/mL, and a minimum bactericidal concentration (MBC) between 8–16 µg/mL and 128 µg/mL for the strains of C. michiganensis subsp. michiganensis and P. syringae pv. tomato, respectively. The EO and bakuchiol also had an inhibitory effect when applied directly onto plates seeded with C. michiganensis subsp. michiganensis. Plant extracts and their components have been reported to have antimicrobial properties against phytopathogens. Although such properties could be harnessed for the development of new pathogen control strategies, there are no standardised methods for their assessment in different extracts. The laboratory exercise presented here involves the use of chemical and microbiological techniques to determine the antimicrobial activity of natural products, such as essential oils, against phytopathogenic bacteria. It is aimed at candidates pursuing a PhD in Biological Sciences, but could also be suitable for students undertaking a UG degree, a PGT degree, or an MSc in the same field. In any case, students should be deft at handling microorganisms and complying with general lab work guidelines. This ought to ensure that the proposed techniques are understood easily and carried out safely. The nature of the exercises should allow for an integrative approach to the issue, which considers both chemical and microbiological aspects. Purpose: Corrosion is a major concern for many industries that use metals as structural or functional materials, and the use of corrosion inhibitors is a widely accepted strategy to protect metals from deterioration in corrosive environments. Moreover, the toxic nature, non-biodegradability and price of most conventional corrosion inhibitors have encouraged the application of greener and more sustainable options, with natural and synthetic drugs being major actors. Hence, this paper aims to stress the capability of natural and synthetic drugs as manageable and sustainable, environmentally friendly solutions to the problem of metal corrosion. Design/methodology/approach: In this review, the recent developments in the use of natural and synthetic drugs as corrosion inhibitors are explored in detail to highlight the key advancements and drawbacks towards the advantageous utilization of drugs as corrosion inhibitors. Findings: Corrosion is a critical issue in numerous modern applications, and conventional strategies of corrosion inhibition include the use of toxic and environmentally harmful chemicals. As greener alternatives, natural compounds like plant extracts, essential oils and biopolymers, as well as synthetic drugs, are highlighted in this review. In addition, the advantages and disadvantages of these compounds, as well as their effectiveness in preventing corrosion, are discussed in the review. • This study created a polyacrylonitrile-nano silver-oregano oil electrospun fiber membrane. • The composite nanofiber membrane has potential for use as a green microbial control material. • The composite nanofiber membrane, easy to remove, leaves minimal impact on Grotto heritage. The study created an electrospun fiber membrane with polyacrylonitrile, nano silver, and oregano oil using the electrospinning technique. After examining the preparation parameters, an appropriate formula for the composite film spinning solution and electrospinning parameters were found: 11 wt percent polyacrylonitrile, 6 wt percent natural oregano essential oil, 15 kV of spinning voltage, 0.6 mL/h of advancing rate, and 20 cm of spinning distance. The composite nanofiber membrane demonstrated improved shape and structure, a more balanced antibacterial effect, and persistence against microbes when subjected to the prescribed formula and circumstances. In the end, the strong antimicrobial qualities of the nano-fiber material were validated by the Feilaifeng field testing. This study showed that when combined with natural plant essential oil, the composite nanofiber membrane has potential for use as a green microbial control material for Grottoes historic heritage. By preventing an intense direct contact between antimirobial agents and the cultural relics of the grottoes, the composite barrier reduced the potential harm that could be caused by the solution soaking into the rocks. Moreover, the composite nanofiber membrane provides the advantages of large-scale antibacterial activity from natural essential oil and long-lasting antimicrobial capabilities from nanosilver. Mosquito-borne diseases continue to pose significant threats to human populations, especially in developing and underdeveloped regions, where access to effective preventive measures remains limited. Mosquito repellents represent a cornerstone in the arsenal against these diseases, providing a barrier against mosquito bites. Mosquito repellents come in various formulations, including topical ointments and commercial vaporizers, with varying compositions. Common constituents include deodorized kerosene (DOK) as a solvent, pyrethroids, amides, essential oils for fragrance, and synergists. Despite their widespread use, the toxicological profiles of these repellents remain inadequately understood, raising questions about their safety in prolonged or excessive exposure scenarios. However, while their efficacy in preventing mosquito-borne illnesses is well-established, concerns persist regarding their potential toxicity to humans and the environment. This review critically examines the existing literature on the toxicity of mosquito repellents, focusing on their adverse effects on human health and environmental sustainability. Through an extensive analysis of available research, this review aims to shed light on the potential health risks associated with mosquito repellents, such as dermatological irritation, respiratory complications, and allergic reactions in humans. Vietnamese balm (Elsholtzia ciliata) is a prominent herb in Vietnamese traditional medicine. This study investigated the impact of Vietnamese balm leaf essential oils on the growth of striped catfish (Pangasianodon hypophthalmus) in the juvenile stage. Essential oils were extracted using steam distillation, following European Pharmacopoeia guidelines. Gas chromatographymass spectrometry identified the essential oil components. The experiment encompassed three treatments: 0% (control), 3%, and 5% of Vietnamese balm leaf essential oils in a completely randomized design. The results demonstrated a time and dose-dependent modulation of striped catfish growth by the essential oils. Diets enriched with 5% Vietnamese balm leaf essential oils significantly enhanced survival rate and growth, indicating potential as a fish feed additive. The essential oil yield was 0.83% dry weight, with major components including (Z)-ß-Farnesene (24.02%), neral (15.06%), geranial (15.02%), and ß-ocimene (13.61%). Additionally, the study emphasized the growth-promoting effects of herbal extracts on various growth parameters. Further investigations should explore the impact of Vietnamese balm essential oil on catfish immune response and disease resistance, providing a comprehensive understanding of its potential benefits. The article "Chemical Composition, Antibacterial, Synergistic Antibacterial and Cytotoxic Activities of the Essential Oil of Dimetia hedyotidea" published in the Chemistry of Natural Compounds journal explores the essential oil extracted from Dimetia hedyotidea, a plant traditionally used in Chinese medicine. The essential oil was found to contain various compounds, with hexahydrofarnesyl acetone, linalool, and (E)-β-ionone being the major constituents. The oil exhibited antibacterial properties against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli, and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, and showed synergistic effects with antibiotics.
