An efficient, lightweight apparatus for the production of ozone in flowing oxygen or air has been constructed and tested. The exciter is an automotive electronic ignition running from a 28‐V dc power source. The discharge tube consists of coaxial conductive‐coated flint glass tubing fitting into Teflon end pieces. A single such unit will produce 4% ozone in oxygen flowing at 0.2 l/min, or a maximum of 0.020 l of ozone per minute in a total flow of 1.0 l/min.

As health education has become a major strategy for addressing current health problems, the need for expertise in health education has increased. Today health education specialists work not only in health agencies and educational institutions but also in hospitals and other health and medical facilities, in businesses and industries, and in consulting firms. To promote quality assurance in the delivery of health education services to the public, the profession has launched a voluntary credentialing system for health education specialists. Seven areas of responsibilities and the competencies that they require have been delineated as generic to the practice of entry level health education specialists, regardless of the setting (for example, school, health agency, work site) where they work. The purposes and rationale for new National Commission for Health Education Credentialing, Inc., are described as well as the benefits of certification for the profession. The events and accomplishments of the past decade that have provided the foundation for the newly established credentialing program for the health education profession are chronicled.

The purpose of this paper was to explain the NIH research grant process and highlight competencies for attracting research funding. This information should help readers obtain financial support for important cardiovascular research, especially in the prevention area.

The health attitudes and behaviors of 94 mothers of preschool children were investigated by personal interview in this descriptive correlational study. Mothers were divided into two groups, depending on their compliance or noncompliance, with recommended immunizations for their children. Subjects were assessed for health locus of control, perceived vulnerability to six communicable diseases, and health as a value. Demographic variables of age, education, religion, ethnicity, income, and recall of earlier poliomyelitis epidemics were studied. Analysis of variance, chi-square and descriptive statistics were used in the data analysis. Results revealed no significant differences between compliant and noncompliant mothers to health locus of control measure, perceived vulnerability to six diseases under study, or recollection of earlier poliomyelitis epidemics. The majority of mothers were Hispanic, Catholic, in their late twenties, of low income and with a 12th grade education or less. Health as a value was selected first or second by the subjects in most cases, regardless of immunization compliance behavior. Compared with a normative sample, mothers in this study were predominantly more external than internal in their locus of control orientation.

MR. NEWCOMB has reviewed Mr. Proctor's book on the Sun in your number of May 18, and Mr. Proctor has replied in the number for June 1. In each of these articles I find my work and name mentioned in a way that is scarcely satisfactory to me. Mr. Proctor's reply is, however, of course, only intended to defend his own work, not mine. In Mr. Newcomb's review I find the following very strong passage. Mr. Newcomb says:— “We find ligaments, black drops, and distortions sometimes seen in interior contacts of the limbs of Mercury or Venus with that of the sun described as if they wtre regular phenomena of a transit; without any mention of the facts and experiments which indicated that these phenomena are simple products of insufficient optical power and bad definition, which disappear in a fair atmosphere with a good telescope well adjusted to focus.” With respect to facts, I must be allowed to observe that I believe the facts are entirely the other way. This is a point which can only be tested by appealing to the facts themselves.

IN NATURE of August 24 I objected to, as misleading, the statement by Mr. Newcomb that “we find ligaments, black drops, and distortions sometimes seen in interior contacts of the limbs of Mercury or Venus with that of the sun, described as if they were regular phenomena of a transit, without any mention of the facts and experiments which indicated that these phenomena are simple products of insufficient optical power and bad definition which disappear in a fair atmosphere with a good telescope well adjusted to focus.” I asked for references to the facts and experiments by which the statements are justified.
