Background: Homeopathy is one of the commonly used systems of complementary or alternative medicine. The present study was conducted with an aim to compare the antibacterial efficacy of two commonly used homeopathic medicaments acid benzoicum 30C (SBL Pvt Ltd) and silicea 6C (SBL Pvt Ltd) with that of calcium hydroxide (Deepti Ltd) as intracanal medicament against Enterococcus faecalis (ATCC-29212)., Materials and Methods: The test organism used for the study was E. faecalis . Petri plates with 20 ml of sheep blood agar were inoculated with 0.1 ml of the microbial suspensions. The medicaments to be tested for antimicrobial efficacy against E. faecalis were divided into three groups: Group A (acid benzoicum), Group B (silicea), and Group C (calcium hydroxide). The antimicrobial activity of each medicament was measured and expressed in terms of the mean of the diameter of zone of inhibition (in mm) produced by each extract at the end of the incubation period. ANOVA and Tukey's honestly-significant difference posthoc test were used for the intergroup comparison. P < 0.05 was considered statistically significant., Results: Group A (acid benzoicum) showed the maximum zone of inhibition against Gram-positive E. faecalis (17.2 ± 0.65), and the difference between the groups related to the antibacterial activity was highly significant ( P < 0.001). Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) have received a significant amount of attention from the researchers. It is used as a nanomaterial for various applications due to its excellent physiochemical properties for the last few decades. Self-assembly is a phenomenon where autonomous reorganization of randomly oriented species occurs elegantly. Self-assembly is responsible for the formation of the hierarchical cholesteric structure of CNCs. This process is highly influenced by several factors, such as the surface chemistry of the nanoparticles, intermolecular forces, and the fundamental laws of thermodynamics. Various conventional experimental designs and molecular dynamics (MD) studies have been applied to determine the possible mechanism of self-assembly in CNCs. Different external factors, like pH, temperature, magnetic/electric fields, vacuum, also influence the self-assembly process in CNCs. Notably, better responses have been observed in CNCs-grafted polymer nanocomposites. These functionalized CNCs with stimuli-responsive self-assembly have immense practical applications in modern biotechnology and medicine. Pulmonary atresia with ventricular septal defect and coronary-dependent pulmonary circulation arising from both major coronary arteries is rare. Dependence of pulmonary blood flow on the coronaries and the risk of early development of pulmonary vascular obstructive disease warrant early surgical repair in these patients. We report a case of a ten-month-old infant with pulmonary atresia with ventricular septal defect and coronary artery-to-main pulmonary artery connections who was successfully managed with ligation of the coronary fistulas and intracardiac repair.

Nanocrystalline hydroxyapatite (HAp) was synthesized from biowaste eggshells through sonication followed by the heat treatment. Calcium oxide as a precursor moiety for the synthesis of HAp was obtained through the heat treatment of eggshells at 900°C for 3 hr. The prepared HAp was characterized by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), X-ray powder diffraction (XRD), and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The appearance of the FTIR absorption peaks in between at 516-1031 and 3,636 cm -1 shows phosphate and hydroxyl groups in prepared HAp, respectively. The XRD-patterns indicate the formation of HAp started within 5 min of sonication. The SEM morphologies suggested that the synthesized HAp was highly crystalline and compact. We tested the elemental analysis of the synthesized HAp through X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and inductively coupled plasma mass spectroscopy. The higher Ca/P ratio has observed in heat-treated HAp. These results show that heat treatment facilitates the formation of highly crystalline and compact HAp. Cytotoxicity and osteogenic potential of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) were also evaluated in the presence of HAp. No significant cytotoxicity was noted in the presence of HAp, suggested their biocompatibility. Enhanced osteogenesis of hMSCs occurred with HAp powder, confirming the feasibility in the treatment of osteogenesis. High-risk human papillomavirus has been suggested as a risk factor for esophageal adenocarcinoma. Tumor human papillomavirus status has been reported to confer a favorable prognosis in esophageal adenocarcinoma. The size of the primary tumor and degree of lymphatic spread determines the prognosis of esophageal carcinomas. Lymph node status has been found to be a predictor of recurrent disease as well as 5-year survival in esophageal malignancies. In human papillomavirus driven cancers, e.g . cervical, anogenital, head and neck cancers, associated lymph nodes with a high viral load suggest metastatic lymph node involvement. Thus, human papillomavirus could potentially be useful as a marker of micro-metastases. To date, there have been no reported studies regarding human papillomavirus involvement in lymph nodes of metastatic esophageal adenocarcinoma. Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are considered a promising nanomaterial for diverse applications owing to their attractive physicochemical properties such as high surface area, superior mechanical and thermal strength, electrochemical activity, and so on. Different techniques like arc discharge, laser vaporization, chemical vapor deposition (CVD), and vapor phase growth are explored for the synthesis of CNTs. Each technique has advantages and disadvantages. The physicochemical properties of the synthesized CNTs are profoundly affected by the techniques used in the synthesis process. Here, we briefly described the standard methods applied in the synthesis of CNTs and their use in the agricultural and biotechnological fields. Notably, better seed germination or plant growth was noted in the presence of CNTs than the control. However, the exact mechanism of action is still unclear. Significant improvements in the electrochemical performances have been observed in CNTs-doped electrodes than those of pure. CNTs or their derivatives are also utilized in wastewater treatment. The high surface area and the presence of different functional groups in the functionalized CNTs facilitate the better adsorption of toxic metal ions or other chemical moieties. CNTs or their derivatives can be applied for the storage of hydrogen as an energy source. It has been observed that the temperature widely influences the hydrogen storage ability of CNTs. This review paper highlighted some recent development on electrochemical platforms over single-walled CNTs (SWCNTs), multi-walled CNTs (MWCNTs), and nanocomposites as a promising biomaterial in the field of agriculture and biotechnology. It is possible to tune the properties of carbon-based nanomaterials by functionalization of their structure to use as an engineering toolkit for different applications, including agricultural and biotechnological fields.

Maitake ( Grifola frondosa ) mushroom has received an enormous amount of attention as a dietary supplement due to its high nutritional values. The particle sizes of G. frondosa mushrooms were monitored by a classifying mill. β -Glucans are the bioactive component of the mushroom, and it was revealed through Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), proton and carbon nuclear magnetic resonance ( 1 H and 13 C-NMR), matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization, and time-of-flight (MALDI-TOF) spectrometry. The biocompatibility of G. frondosa particles, as well as induced osteogenesis of hMSCs, was evaluated through WST-1 assay and alizarin staining (ARS) technique, respectively. Notably, enhanced cell viability was noted in the presence of G. frondosa . Significantly improved calcium deposition has observed from hMSCs with G. frondosa, suggesting to their mineralization potential. The expression of osteogenic related gene markers was examined in the presence of G. frondosa through real-time polymerase chain reaction (qPCR) technique. The upregulation of osteogenic gene markers in the presence of G. frondosa particles was indicating their superior osteogenic potential. Besides, G. frondosa also activated the secretion of various kinds of proteins from the hMSCs indicating their potential for tissue engineering applications. Enhanced secretion of different immunoglobulins was observed in rat serum in the presence of G. frondosa , further demonstrating their therapeutic nature. Importance: The presence of high-risk human papillomavirus (HPV) has been associated with a favorable outcome in Barrett high-grade dysplasia (HGD) and esophageal adenocarcinoma (EAC). Nevertheless, the prognostic significance of other HPV-related biomarkers (ie, retinoblastoma protein [pRb], cyclin D1 [CD1], minichromosome maintenance protein [MCM2] and Ki-67) is unknown., Objective: To examine the association between HPV-related biomarkers and survival in adult patients with Barrett HGD and EAC., Design, Setting, and Participants: This retrospective case-control study examined the hypothesis that the HPV-related cell cycle markers (pRb, CD1, and Ki-67) and the viral surrogate marker (MCM2) may be associated with a favorable prognosis in Barrett HGD and EAC. Pretreatment biopsies were used for HPV DNA determination via polymerase chain reaction and immunohistochemistry for the HPV-related biomarkers. Recruitment of patients occurred in secondary and tertiary referral centers, with 151 patients assessed for eligibility. The study period was from December 1, 2002, to November 28, 2017, and the dates of analysis were from September 9, 2011, to November 28, 2017., Main Outcomes and Measures: Disease-free survival and overall survival., Results: Of 151 patients assessed for eligibility, 9 were excluded. Among the 142 patients with Barrett HGD or EAC (126 [88.7%] men; mean [SD] age, 66.0 [12.1] years; 142 [100%] white), 37 were HPV positive and 105 were HPV negative. No association with disease-free survival was noted for pRb, CD1, Ki-67, and MCM2. In regard to overall survival, only low expression of CD1 had a favorable prognosis (hazard ratio [HR], 0.53; 95% CI, 0.30-0.95; adjusted P = .03). All the biomarkers stratified by HPV status showed significant associations with survival. Patients with HPV-positive, low-expression pRb esophageal tumors were associated with a significantly improved disease-free survival compared with the HPV-negative, high-expression Rb tumors (HR, 0.33; 95% CI, 0.12-0.93; adjusted P = .04). Similarly, HPV-positive, low-expression CD1 was associated with a significantly favorable disease-free survival (HR, 0.26; 95% CI, 0.09-0.76; adjusted P = .01), as was HPV-positive, high-expression MCM2 (HR, 0.27; 95% CI, 0.09-0.78; adjusted P = .02). In regard to overall survival, HPV was significantly associated only with low CD1 (HR, 0.38; 95% CI, 0.15-0.94; adjusted P = .04)., Conclusions and Relevance: This study's findings suggest that low expression of CD1 appears to be an independent prognostic marker in Barrett HGD and EAC. Human papillomavirus positivity in combination with pRb, CD1, MCM2, and Ki-67 was associated with a survival benefit in esophageal tumors. These findings suggest the possibility of personalization of therapy for Barrett HGD and EAC based on viral status.

Cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) have received a great amount of attention to the production of micro/nano-platforms for tissue engineering applications. CNCs were extracted from rice husk biomass and characterized by different spectroscopic techniques. The biocompatibility of the extracted CNCs was revealed by the WST-1 assay technique in the presence of human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSCs) after different time intervals. An improvement in the mechanical properties was observed in the fabricated scaffolds (PCL/CNC) compared to PCL scaffolds. Graphene oxide (GO)-coated (PCL/CNC) electrospun scaffolds (GPC) were prepared by the deposition of PCL/CNC composite nanofibers on the surface of GO for tissue engineering. Notably, better cell proliferation and differentiation were observed in the presence of the fabricated scaffolds. This enhancement of the properties of the fabricated scaffolds was due to the presence of conductive GO moieties which facilitated the cellular response. Diagnosis and management of multiple ventricular septal defects still remain a challenging task. Although many new diagnostic modalities have been used for the perioperative diagnosis of ventricular septal defects, the discovery of residual or additional shunts in the postoperative period is not uncommon. We report a case where we observed an undiagnosed additional ventricular septal defect shunting deoxygenated dark blood into the aortic root vent during deairing of the heart, which was confirmed on transesophageal echocardiography and addressed with reinstitution of cardiopulmonary bypass.

Cellulose-based hydrogels are immensely important for tissue engineering. In this review, we attempt to document the source, nature, and application of cellulose-based hydrogels as an extracellular matrix for tissue growth and regeneration. Hydrogels can be prepared either from native cellulose, including both bacterial and plant sources or from cellulose derivatives, such as methyl cellulose, carboxymethylcellulose, and hydroxypropylmethylcellulose or even metal ions such as silver. Cellulose-polymer composite (polymers that include natural sources including chitosan, starch, alginates, collagen, hyaluronic acid, and chitin) are an attractive, inexpensive, and advantageous structural material that is easy to use. Cellulose-based scaffolding materials are widely used in the regeneration of various tissues, such as bone, cartilage, heart, blood vessel, nerve, and liver, among others. Nanocellulose, derived from cellulose hydrolysis, has unique optical and mechanical properties, high surface area, and good biocompatibility. It is frequently used as a reinforcing agent to improve the native properties of materials. The presence of functional groups in its surface enables the alteration of its behavior and its use under different conditions. Nanocellulose is typically used in the form of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs), cellulose nanofibers (CNFs), or bacterial nanocellulose (BNC). CNCs and CNFs have a high aspect ratio with typical lengths of ∼100-250 nm and 0.1-2 μm, respectively; BNC is nanostructured cellulose produced by bacteria. Nanohybrid materials are a combination of organic or inorganic nanomaterials with macromolecules forming a single composite and typically exhibit superior optical, thermal, and mechanical properties to those of native polymers, owing to the greater interactions between the macromolecule matrix and the nanomaterials. Excellent biocompatibility and biodegradability make nanocellulose an ideal material for applications in biomedicine. Unlike native polymers, nanocellulose-based nanohybrids exhibit a sustained drug release ability, which can be further optimized by changing the content or chemical environment of the nanocellulose, as well as the external stimuli, such as the pH and electric fields. The knowledge on the mode of action, biocompatibility and ecological tolerance of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) is gradually accumulating over the years with contradictory findings. Most of the studies indicated the toxic impact of AgNPs on plant growth and development, where induction of oxidative stress was considered to be one of the causal factors. The present study demonstrates the phytostimulatory effect of bio-synthesized silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) during seed germination and seedling growth of rice (Oryza sativa L., cv. Swarna) under in vitro condition. All the tested concentrations of AgNPs (10, 20, 40 ppm) promote both the shoot and root growth which was evident from the increased length and biomass of the seedlings. Exposure to AgNPs also significantly increased the chlorophyll a and carotenoid contents. The content and the pattern of distribution of phenolic metabolites among the different treatments are indicative of non-toxic impact of AgNP mimicking mild or no stress to the seedlings. Growth stimulation of rice seedlings by AgNPs was further supported by a low level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) concomitant with decreased amount of lipid peroxidation and H 2 O 2 content, compared to control. In order to unravel the stimulatory impact of AgNPs on rice seedling growth, the present study also describes the AgNPs induced changes in antioxidative enzyme activity and related gene expression levels. Elevated levels of catalase (CAT), ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and glutathione reductase (GR) activities were recorded in all the AgNPs treated seedlings with improved growth. The activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) was not significantly altered at low concentration of AgNPs. It appears that enzymes of ascorbate cycle, APX and GR are more active in ensuring protection against oxidative damage than SOD. There was significant up-regulation of CAT and APX gene expressions in seedlings exposed to AgNPs, whereas the expression level of CuZnSOD gene was decreased gradually with an increase in the concentration of AgNPs. The antioxidant enzyme activities and gene expression patterns coupled with the levels of H 2 O 2 and lipid peroxidation indicates that the efficiency of redox reactions was increased in the presence of AgNPs and that accelerates the seedling growth., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier Inc. An unusual approach is reported herein to fabricate magnetic hematite (α-Fe 2 O 3 ) decorated electrochemically reduced graphene oxide (α-Fe 2 O 3 @erGO) nanocomposite. The method utilizes direct electrochemical reduction of self-assembled, ex-situ synthesized α-Fe 2 O 3 anchored GO to erGO (α-Fe 2 O 3 @erGO) on glassy carbon electrode (GCE) for selective detection dopamine (DA), an important biomarker of Parkinson's disease. The formation of α-Fe 2 O 3 @erGO/GCE has been confirmed by XPS and Raman spectroscopy. α-Fe 2 O 3 @erGO modified GCE exhibits synergistic catalytic activity nearly 2.2 and 5 fold higher than α-Fe 2 O 3 @GO and other modified electrodes, respectively towards oxidation of DA. The fabricated sensor exhibited linear dynamic ranges over 0.25 - 100 µM in response to DA with a LOD of 0.024 µM (S/N = 3), LOQ of 0.08 µM (S/N = 10), and a sensitivity of 12.56 µA µM -1 cm -2 . Finally, the practical analytical application of the proposed α-Fe 2 O 3 @erGO/GCE was investigated for the determination of DA in commercially available pharmaceutical formulation and human serum samples, and showed satisfactory recovery results towards DA., (Copyright © 2018 Elsevier B.V. A baby with pulmonary atresia with intact ventricular septum and hypoplastic right ventricle, with suspected right ventricle to coronary communications, was operated on for placing an aortopulmonary shunt. Postoperatively, the baby deteriorated with features of myocardial ischemia. Postmortem examination revealed anomalous origin of left coronary artery from pulmonary artery that caused significant coronary ischemia on ligation of the ductus arteriosus. Although coronary anomalies, including right ventricle dependent coronary circulation, has been well described, this is the first report of anomalous origin of coronary artery from pulmonary artery in a baby with pulmonary atresia and intact ventricular septum., (Copyright © 2018 The Society of Thoracic Surgeons. Purpose: To evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of shear wave elastography (SWE) and transient elastography (TE) in the evaluation of liver fibrosis in chronic hepatitis B (CHB) and C (CHC) patients taking liver biopsy as gold standard., Methods: Ethics committee approved this prospective cross-sectional study. Between October 2012 and December 2014, consecutive CHB/CHC patients fulfilling the inclusion criteria were included-age more than 18 years, informed written consent, willing and suitable for liver biopsy. SWE, TE, and biopsy were performed the same day. Liver stiffness measurement (LSM) cut-offs for various stages of fibrosis were generated for SWE and TE. AUC, sensitivity, specificity, and positive/negative predictive values were estimated individually or in combination., Results: CH patients (n = 240, CHB 172, CHC 68), 176 males, 64 females, mean age 32.6 ± 11.6 years were enrolled. Mean LSM of patients with no histological fibrosis (F0) was 5.0 ± 0.7 and 5.1+1.4 kPa on SWE and TE, respectively. For differentiating F2 and F3-4 fibrosis on SWE, at 7.0 kPa cut-off, the sensitivity was 81.3% and specificity 77.6%. For TE, at 8.3 kPa cut-off, sensitivity was 81.8% and specificity 83.1%. For F3 vs. F4, SWE sensitivity was 83.3% and specificity 90.7%. At 14.8 kPa cut-off, TE showed similar sensitivity (83.3%) but specificity increased to 96.5%. Significant correlation between SWE and TE was observed (r = 0.33, p < 0.001). On combining SWE and TE, a drop in sensitivity with increased specificity for all stages of liver fibrosis occured., Conclusion: SWE is an accurate technique for evaluating liver fibrosis. SWE compares favorably with TE especially for predicting advanced fibrosis/cirrhosis. Combining SWE and TE further improves specificity.

The Y-graft Fontan as described today suffers from the disadvantage of being hostage to restrictions imposed upon the design of the limbs of the Y by existent cardiac anatomy. We describe a patient with discontinuous pulmonary arteries following a prior Glenn shunt, who underwent Fontan completion using an intra-atrial Y-limb placement for recruitment of the discontinuous pulmonary artery. Intracardiac placement of the limb(s) of the Y-graft could potentially increase the applicability of this Fontan modification without being constrained by external cardiac anatomy.

Early and accurate identification of Parkinsonian syndromes (PS) involving presynaptic degeneration from nondegenerative variants such as scans without evidence of dopaminergic deficit (SWEDD) and tremor disorders is important for effective patient management as the course, therapy, and prognosis differ substantially between the two groups. In this study, we use single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) images from healthy normal, early PD, and SWEDD subjects, as obtained from the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI) database, and process them to compute shape- and surface-fitting-based features. We use these features to develop and compare various classification models that can discriminate between scans showing dopaminergic deficit, as in PD, from scans without the deficit, as in healthy normal or SWEDD. Along with it, we also compare these features with striatal binding ratio (SBR)-based features, which are well established and clinically used, by computing a feature-importance score using random forests technique. We observe that the support vector machine (SVM) classifier gives the best performance with an accuracy of 97.29%. These features also show higher importance than the SBR-based features. We infer from the study that shape analysis and surface fitting are useful and promising methods for extracting discriminatory features that can be used to develop diagnostic models that might have the potential to help clinicians in the diagnostic process.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the relationship between body mass index and motor competence in Santal children 5-12 years old. A total of 816 Santal children were studied. Children's adiposity status was assessed by body mass index (BMI) for age z-score based on World Health Organization reference data. Motor competence was measured using the Bruininks-Oseretsky Test of Motor Competence (BOT-2). There was no significant difference in mean BMI z-score between Santal boys (0.13 ± 0.07) and girls (-0.14 ± 0.07). Healthy weight (HW) children scored higher (p < .05) in some individual motor subtests (bilateral competence, balance, running speed and agility, upper limb competence, and strength) and in total BOT-2 score (p < .05) compared with scores for underweight (UW) and overweight (OW) children. Nonlinear regression analysis showed that BMI is a significant independent predictor of motor competence (p < .01). Motor competence showed a curvilinear relationship with BMI-z-score, with the lowest point motor scores in strength and upper limb competence (p < .05) for both UW and OW children compared to HW children who scored highest. The results also indicated that gross motor skills, but not fine motor skills, were poorer among children who were UW or OW compared with HW children.

We study the near field to the far field evolution of spin angular momentum (SAM) density and the Poynting vector of the scattered waves from spherical scatterers. The results show that at the near field, the SAM density and the Poynting vector are dominated by their transverse components. While the former (transverse SAM) is independent of the helicity of the incident circular polarization state, the latter (transverse Poynting vector) depends upon the polarization state. It is further demonstrated that the interference of the transverse electric and transverse magnetic scattering modes enhances both the magnitudes and the spatial extent of the transverse SAM and the transverse momentum components.

Fontan completion after prior Kawashima repair for single ventricle with interruption of the inferior vena cava can be accomplished by various methods. We describe a patient who underwent the connection of hepatic to hemiazygos vein that we believe would be superior to the conventional cavopulmonary connection in our patient.

Successful repair of congenitally corrected transposition with ventricular septal defect and pulmonary stenosis presenting with heart failure in the fifth decade of life is described. As part of their basal immune mechanism against insect/herbivore attacks, plants have evolved systemic response mechanisms. Such a systemic wound response in tomato was found to involve an 18 amino acid polypeptide called systemin, the first polypeptide hormone to be discovered in plants. Systematic alanine scanning and deletion studies showed differential modulation in its activity, particularly a major loss of function due to alanine substitution at positions 13 and 17 and less extentive loss of function due to substitution at position 12. We have studied the conformational ensembles of wild-type systemin along with its 17 variants by carrying out a total of 5.76 μs of replica-exchange molecular dynamics simulation in an implicit solvent environment. In our simulations, wild-type systemin showed a lack of α-helical and β-sheet structures, in conformity with earlier circular dichroism and NMR data. On the other hand, two regions containing diproline segments showed a tendency to adopt polyproline II structures. Examination of conformational ensembles of the 17 variants revealed a change in the population distributions, suggesting a less flexible structure for alanine substitutions at positions 12 and 13 but not for position 17. Combined with the experimental observations that positions 1-14 of systemin are important for the formation of the peptide-receptor complex, this leads to the hypothesis that loss of conformational flexibility may play a role in the loss of activity of systemin due to the P12A and P13A substitutions, while T17A deactivation probably occurs for a different reason, most likely the loss of the threonine phosphorylation site. We also indicate possible structural reasons why the substitution of the prolines at positions 12 and 13 leads to a loss of conformational freedom in the peptide.

Objective: This study focused on whether primary cultures of ovarian cancer (OC) cells established from ascites can be used to evaluate response to chemotherapeutic agents and if curcumin could enhance the efficacy of these agents., Materials and Methods: We established five primary cultures of ascitic cells from OC patients and treated them with curcumin, carboplatin, and paclitaxel singly and in combinations. The percentage of apoptotic cells was determined by flow cytometry., Results: There was a wide variation in the response of individual primary cultures to treatment with the chemotherapeutic agents. Curcumin by itself was as good as carboplatin or paclitaxel in inducing apoptosis in the primary OC cells. Curcumin was not able to affect the carboplatin mediated cell killing. However, a combination of curcumin and paclitaxel was additive and was equally effective as a combination of carboplatin and paclitaxel. A combination of curcumin carboplatin, and paclitaxel was also found to be additive and, in fact, turned out to be the best combination that gave the highest percentage of apoptosis in vitro., Conclusion: This study highlights the fact that primary cultures of OC cells can be used to detect response to chemotherapeutic agents and help to individualize the treatment offered to OC patients.

The SER(R)S spectra of Methylene Blue (MB) molecule adsorbed on gold nanocolloidal particles (AuNCs) have been investigated. The adsorptive parameters of the molecule adsorbed on AuNCs have been evaluated with the aid of Fluorescence Spectroscopy study. Fluorescence spectroscopic studies have been further applied to understand the concentration of probe molecule actually adsorbed on AuNC surfaces. Gigantic enhancements ∼10(6)-10(16) orders of magnitude have been recorded for the enhanced Raman bands in the SER(R)S spectra. Three-dimensional Finite Difference Time Domain (3D-FDTD) simulations studies have been carried out to predict the distributions of electric fields around the possible nanoaggregated hot geometries considered to be responsible for the huge enhancements of SER(R)S bands of the MB molecule., (Copyright © 2015 Elsevier B.V. Context: The recent advent of bipolar energy in bladder tumor resection has raised many questions regarding density of current and its effect on histopathology of the resected transurethral resection of bladder tumor (TURBT) chips., Aims: The aim of this study is to evaluate the histomorphological features in resected bladder tumors comparing bipolar versus conventional (monopolar) energy., Settings and Design: Inclusion criteria were patients with primary presentation of carcinoma urinary bladder undergoing TURBT. The patients with prior resections were excluded as these could jeopardize the results of cautery artifacts., Materials and Methods: From February 2010 to December 2011, 61 patients with primary carcinoma bladder and meeting our inclusion criteria were compared. Group 1 (n = 31) underwent bipolar-TURBT (B-TURBT) and Group 2 (n = 30) monopolar-TURBT (M-TURBT). Two pathologists, who were blinded to the form of electrocautery used, examined the resected tissue. The degree of cautery artifact in each specimen was recorded. The severity of the cautery artifact was graded as absent, mild, moderate, or severe. The mean age, tumor size, and resection time were recorded in both groups., Statistical Analysis Used: Data were analyzed using SPSS 16. Data were compared in between groups using paired t-test and Pearson's Chi-square test. The significance level was set at 0.05., Results: The mean age, tumor size, and resection time were similar in between the two groups. The pathologists had no obscurity in reaching a correct diagnosis in all cases. The cautery artifacts were graded as absent in 10 (32.2%) and 8 (26.67%), mild in 12 (38.7%) and 11 (36.67%), moderate in 5 (16.1%) and 7 (23.33%) and severe in 4 (12.9%) and 5 (16.66%) cases, respectively in Group 1 and 2. There was no statistically significant histomorphogical dissimilarity between specimens according to the type of cautery used., Conclusions: Bladder tissue obtained from B-TURBT is of equivalent histomorphological feature as that of standard M-TURBT.

The study elucidates the effect of utilizing cereal-pulse-fruit seed composite flour in the development and quality analysis of leavened bread. The composite flour was prepared using refined wheat flour (WF), high protein soy flour (SF), sprouted mung bean flour (MF) and mango kernel flour (MKF). Three variations were formulated such as V-I (WF: SF: MF: MKF = 85:5:5:5), V-II (WF: SF: MF: MKF = 70:10:10:10), and V-III (WF: SF: MF: MKF = 60:14:13:13). Pertinent functional, physico-chemical and organoleptic attributes were studied in composite flour variations and their bread preparations. Physical characteristics of the bread variations revealed a percentage decrease in loaf height (14 %) and volume (25 %) and 20 % increase in loaf weight with increased substitution of composite flour. The sensory evaluation of experimental breads on a nine-point hedonic scale revealed that V-I score was 5 % higher than the standard bread. Hence, the present study highlighted the nutrient enrichment of bread on incorporation of a potential waste material mango kernel, soy and sprouted legume. Relevant statistical tests were done to analyze the significance of means for all tested parameters.

Primary Sjögren's syndrome is an autoimmune disease presenting classically as keratoconjunctivitis sicca. Renal involvement in Sjögrens's syndrome is less common, and the initial presentation with renal complications without any sicca symptoms is extremely rare. The renal involvement may present with symptoms arising from interstitial nephritis, mainly distal renal tubular acidosis.

Metal-dielectric-metal (MDM) structures provide directional emission close to the surface normal, which offers opportunities for new design formats in fluorescence based applications. The directional emission arises due to near-field coupling of fluorophores with the optical modes present in the MDM substrate. Reflectivity simulations and dispersion diagrams provide a basic understanding of the mode profiles and the factors that affect the coupling efficiency and the spatial distribution of the coupled emission. This work reveals that the composition of the metal layers, the location of the dye in the MDM substrate and the dielectric thickness are important parameters that can be chosen to tune the color of the emission wavelength, the angle of observation, the angular divergence of the emission and the polarization of the emitted light. These features are valuable for displays and optical signage.

Cognitive development of children is influenced by different environmental factors like nutritional and socio-economic status. The objectives of the present study were to determine the influence of grades of undernutrition and socio-economic status (SES) on the cognitive development of school children of Kolkata. Five hundred sixty six (566) school children having 5-12 years of age were selected from different schools of Kolkata. The cognitive development was measured by the scores of Raven's colored progressive matrices (RCPM). The chronic and acute nutritional statuses were measured from height-for-age (HAZ) and weight-for-age (WAZ) Z scores respectively with reference to the values of WHO. SES was determined by updated Kuppuswamy scale. The prevalences of undernutrition in the observed children were 57.95% (according to HAZ) and 52.82% (according to WAZ). The age dependent growth curve of RCPM scores of the observed children remains in between the 10th and 25th centile of British children. The children belonging to superior and intellectual deficit IQ classes were 21.55 and 36.40%, respectively of the total subjects. Most of the subjects belong to lower middle (39.93%) and upper middle (36.40%) class of SES. RCPM scores of school children were gradually decreased with the grades of undernutrition and SES. RCPM scores were significantly correlated with HAZ, WAZ, SES, age, and sex (P < 0.001) and strongly associated with HAZ, SES, age, and sex (P < 0.001, P < 0.05). Reflectionless potentials (RPs) represent a class of potentials that offer total transmission in the context of one dimensional scattering. An optical realization of RP can exhibit a truly broadband omni-directional antireflection. We report our experimental observations confirming the reflectionless behavior. Stratified media conforming to RP's are designed and fabricated using Al(2)O(3) and TiO(2) heterolayers. They showed < 0.5% reflection over the broad wavelength range of 350 nm to 2500 nm for angles of incidence 0 - 50 degrees. These RPs can be designed on substrates and are thus interesting for optical instrumentation as broadband, omni-directional antireflection coatings.

The photophysics of a donor-acceptor substituted chromophore, 9-amino-10-cyanoanthracene (ACAN), has been investigated in polar and nonpolar solvents to understand its intriguing dual absorption and emission behavior. Steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence studies clearly indicate that the short wavelength emission band of ACAN arises from the higher excited singlet state, S2, while the longer wavelength emission band arises from the intramolecular charge transfer (ICT) state, S1. Interestingly, both these states can be populated by direct excitation from the ground state. Temperature dependent studies reveal a pronounced activation controlled nonradiative decay channel for the ICT state of ACAN. It is proposed that this activation controlled nonradiative de-excitation arises because of a large relative displacement and a cross-over of the potential energy (PE) surfaces of ACAN in the ground and the ICT states, as a result of different twist angles of the amino group in these two states. Qualitative PE diagrams have accordingly been presented to correlate and rationalize the observed results. The present study also brings to light the interesting excited state prototropic behavior of ACAN and the consequent modulation of the ICT emission that has not been reported in the literature so far.

This article demonstrates, for the first time, construction of novel cucurbituril (CB)-adorned supramolecular micellar assemblies of a cationic surfactant, cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), through noncovalent host-guest interactions. The distinct cation receptor features and cavity dimensions of the CB5 and CB7 homologues assert that the macrocyclic hosts remain complexed with the CPC monomers and take part in the micelle formation, a unique observation in contrast to that of the classical host, β-cyclodextrin. The cooperative contributions of the CB macrocycles in the micelle formation have been documented by the photochemical, surface tension, conductivity, DOSY NMR, and SANS measurements. The contrasting downward and upward shifts in the cmc of the CPC surfactant, respectively, with CB5 and CB7 hosts provide a unique opportunity for the controlled tuning of the micellization region for CPC from 0.57 to 1.6 mM, by using a combination of the macrocyclic hosts. The article also establishes the reversible response of these soft supramolecular micellar structures to thermal-stimuli, which projects their utility for on-demand smart drug-delivery vehicles.

Background: Malignant lymphoma (ML) is one of the most common cancers and is most prevalent in developed countries. The distribution of different subtypes of ML varies in the different geographical locations according to World Health Organization (WHO) classification., Aims and Objectives: The study was aimed to analyze different patterns of ML in Eastern India and to compare it with other geographical locations., Materials and Methods: Four hundred and fifty five patients of two large hospitals in Eastern India were included over a period of four years and were categorized according to WHO classification, using morphology and immunohistochemistry (IHC)., Results: There were 347 (76.3%) non Hodgkin lymphomas (NHL), and 108 (23.7%) Hodgkin lymphomas (HL). Diffuse large B cell lymphoma (DLBCL) was the most common of the NHL type (35.2%) followed by the follicular lymphoma (19.3%). B cell lymphoblastic lymphoma was the least common type of NHL (1.4%). Mixed cellularity (33.3%) and nodular sclerosis (26.9%) were the two most common type of HL. Childhood lymphoma comprised of 12.5% of all ML. T cell NHL and HL were the common lymphomas in this age group., Conclusion: Incidence of follicular lymphoma is lower compared to western studies and mixed cellularity is most common subtype of HL unlike nodular sclerosis subtype in western world. Burkitt's type NHL though is the most common subtype of childhood ML in many studies but in our study T cell NHL is the most common type of childhood ML.

The present work is aimed at understanding the origin of the difference in the molecular organization of the active site nanospaces of the class I and class II aminoacyl tRNA synthetases (aaRSs) which are tunnel-like structures. The active site encloses the cognate amino acid (AA) and the adenosine triphosphate (ATP) to carry out aminoacylation reaction. Comparison of the structures of the active site of the class I and class II (aaRSs) shows that the nanodimensional tunnels are curved in opposite directions in the two classes. We investigated the origin of this difference using quantum mechanical computation of electrostatic potential (ESP) of substrates, surrounding residues and ions, using Atoms in Molecule (AIM) Theory and charge population analysis. We show that the difference is principally due to the variation in the spatial charge distribution of ATP in the two classes which correspond to extended and bent conformations of ATP. The present computation shows that the most feasible pathway for nucleophilic attack to alphaP is oppositely directed for class I and class II aaRSs. The available crystal structures show that the cognate AA is indeed located along the channel favorable for nucleophilic attack as predicted by the ESP analysis. It is also shown that the direction of the channel changes its orientation when the orientation of ATP is changed from extended to a bent like structure. We further used the AIM theory to confirm the direction of the approach of AA in each case and the results corroborate the results from the ESP analysis. The opposite curvatures of the active site nanospaces in class I and class II aaRSs are related with the influence of the charge distributions of the extended and bent conformations of ATP, respectively. The results of the computation of electrostatic potential by successive addition of active site residues show that their roles on the reaction are similar in both classes despite the difference in the organization of the active sites of class I and class II aaRSs. The difference in mechanism in two classes as pointed out in recent study (S. Dutta Banik and N. Nandi, J. Biomol. Struct. Dyn. 30, 701 (2012)) is related with the fact that the relative arrangement of the ATP with respect to the AA is opposite in class I and class II aaRSs as explained in the present work. The charge population difference between the reacting centers (which are the alphaP atom of ATP (q(p)) and the attacking oxygen atom of carboxylic acid group (q(o)), respectively) denoted by delta(q), is a measure of the propensity of nucleophilic attack. The population analysis of the substrate AA shows that a non-negligible difference exists between the attacking oxygens of AA in class I (syn) and in class II (anti) which is one reason for the lower value of delta(q) in class II relative to class I. The population analysis of the AA, ATP, Mg+2 ions and active site residues shows that the difference in delta(q) values of the two classes is substantially reduced. When ions and residues are considered. Thus, the bent state of ATP, Mg+2 ions and active site residues complements it cognate AA to carry out the nucleophilic reaction in class I as efficiently as occurs in class I (with the extended state of ATP, single Mg+2 ion and active site residues). This could be one reason for the two different conformations of ATP in the two classes. The mutual arrangements of AA and ATP in each aaRS are guided by the spatial charge distribution of ATP (extended and bent). The present work shows that the construction of nanospace complements the arrangement of the substrate (AA and ATP).

We report perfect two-photon quantum interference with near-unity visibility in a resonant tunneling plasmonic structure in folded Kretschmann geometry. This is despite absorption-induced loss of unitarity in plasmonic systems. The effect is traced to perfect destructive interference between the squares of amplitude reflection and transmission coefficients. We further highlight yet another remarkable potential of coincidence measurements as a probe with better resolution as compared to standard spectroscopic techniques. The finer features show up in both angle resolved and frequency resolved studies.

In Parkinson's disease, there exists a prodromal or a premotor phase characterized by symptoms like olfactory loss and sleep disorders, which may last for years or even decades before the onset of motor clinical symptoms. Diagnostic tools based on machine learning using these features can be very useful as they have the potential in early diagnosis of the disease. In the paper, we use olfactory loss feature from 40-item University of Pennsylvania Smell Identification Test (UPSIT) and Sleep behavior disorder feature from Rapid eye movement sleep Behavior Disorder Screening Questionnaire (RBDSQ), obtained from the Parkinson's Progression Marker's Initiative (PPMI) database, to develop automated diagnostic models using Support Vector Machine (SVM) and classification tree methods. The advantage of using UPSIT and RBDSQ is that they are quick, cheap, and can be self-administered. Results show that the models performed with high accuracy and sensitivity, and that they have the potential to aid in early diagnosis of Parkinson's disease.

Background: Cell-free microRNAs stably and abundantly exist in body fluids and emerging evidence suggests cell-free microRNAs as novel and non-invasive disease biomarker. Deregulation of miR-29 is involved in the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy and insulin resistance thus may be implicated in diabetic vascular complication. Therefore, we investigated the possibility of urinary miR-29 as biomarker for diabetic nephropathy and atherosclerosis in patients with type 2 diabetes., Methods: 83 patients with type 2 diabetes were enrolled in this study, miR-29a, miR-29b and miR-29c levels in urine supernatant was determined by TaqMan qRT-PCR, and a synthetic cel-miR-39 was added to the urine as a spike-in control before miRNAs extraction. Urinary albumin excretion rate and urine albumin/creatinine ratio, funduscopy and carotid ultrasound were used for evaluation of diabetic vascular complication. The laboratory parameters indicating blood glucose level, renal function and serum lipids were also collected., Results: Patients with albuminuria (n = 42, age 60.62 ± 12.00 yrs) showed significantly higher comorbidity of diabetic retinopathy (p = 0.015) and higher levels of urinary miR-29a (p = 0.035) compared with those with normoalbuminuria (n = 41, age 58.54 ± 14.40 yrs). There was no significant difference in urinary miR-29b (p = 0.148) or miR-29c level (p = 0.321) between groups. Urinary albumin excretion rate significantly correlated with urinary miR-29a level (r = 0.286, p = 0.016), while urinary miR-29b significantly correlated with carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) (r = 0.286, p = 0.046)., Conclusion: Urinary miR-29a correlated with albuminuria while urinary miR-29b correlated with carotid intima-media thickness (cIMT) in patients with type 2 diabetes. Therefore, they may have the potential to serve as alternative biomarker for diabetic nephropathy and atherosclerosis in type 2 diabetes.

In this study, lyophilized and methanolic extracts of aloe gel from different germplasms were evaluated for their potential to inhibit mushroom tyrosinase activity. The results showed potent inhibitory effect of Aloe vera gel extracts on L-dihydroxyphenylalanine (L-DOPA) oxidation catalyzed by tyrosinase in a dose-dependent manner. Significant differences in % inhibition of tyrosinase among the extraction methods and the germplasms were observed. The relative performance of the germplasms was evaluated with the help of posthoc multicomparison test. The methanolic extract was more effective than the lyophilized crude gel in all the germplasms. The inhibitory effect of the lyophilized gel and methanolic extract tested from five germplasms followed the order: RM > TN > S24 > OR > RJN. The germplasm RM showed the highest tyrosinase inhibition, and the maximum % inhibition noted was 26.04% and 41.18%, respectively for the lyophilized and methanolic extracts at 6 mg · mL(-1) concentration. Lineweaver-Burk plots of the different concentrations of L-DOPA in the absence and presence of lyophilized gel extract showed competitive inhibition of mushroom tyrosinase in all the germplasms. This study suggests that the germplasm RM could potentially be used for the isolation and identification of the effective tyrosinase inhibitory component, and ascertains the critical role of selecting the best source of germplasm for natural product isolation and characterization., (Copyright © 2013 China Pharmaceutical University. Paraneoplastic pemphigus (PNP) is often a fatal autoimmune bullous disease characterized by severe stomatitis, polymorphous skin eruptions, and underlying neoplasms. We describe a patient with PNP associated with follicular dendritic cell sarcoma (FDCS), a rare neoplasm originating from follicular dendritic cells, which are non-lymphoid, non-phagocytic accessory cells of the lymphoid system and play an integral role in regulation of the germinal center reaction and present antigens to B-cells. The presence of rich vascularity around the tumor and few hyalanized vascular follicles found in histopathological examination gives the clue that the tumor might have developed from Castleman's disease (CD). As for the mechanisms by which CD induces PNP, it has been proposed that autoantibodies secreted from the Castleman's tumor play pivotal role. This hypothesis seems to be supported by the present case, in which CD may have triggered both the FDCS and the PNP.

Aims: Aim of the study was to assess the gonadal function of young adult males with metabolic syndrome and to compare them with healthy age matched controls., Methods: Forty young male subjects of age group 20-40 years who fulfilled the IDF criteria (2005) for diagnosis of metabolic syndrome were included in the study. Thorough evaluation of the subjects was done and history of sexual dysfunction if any was noted. Pooled blood samples were collected from each subject in fasting state for total testosterone, SHBG, FSH, LH, prolactin and insulin levels. All hormonal analyses were done by radio immune assay (RIA). Hypogonadism was defined as total testosterone less than 3ng/ml. Eighteen healthy age matched controls were also taken for the study., Results: Twenty percent of subjects with metabolic syndrome had eugonadotropic hypogonadism compared to 5.5% controls. Subjects with metabolic syndrome also had significantly lower SHBG level compared to the controls., Conclusion: From this study it has been observed that eugonadotropic hypogonadism with low total testosterone and normal or low normal gonadotropin levels may be a feature of the metabolic syndrome in young adult males. Significant low SHBG levels as compared to controls could be one of the factors responsible for various biochemical alteration seen in these cases. This study highlights the importance of evaluating gonadal function in young adult males with the metabolic syndrome and has therapeutic implications in the management of such subjects with gonadal dysfunction., (Copyright © 2013 Diabetes India. We show anti-crossings due to strong in-plane coupling of grating excited propagating plasmon modes in dielectric-metal-dielectric structure with 2D dielectric pattern on top. Grating coupled propagating plasmon modes along with their complete dispersion in the measurement range and all different sample orientations are calculated first. Further a coupled mode theory is presented for the specific geometry presented here. Experimentally measured anti-crossing widths are compared with those calculated by coupled mode theory. It is shown that the coupling strength of the plasmon modes and thus the anti-crossing width can be controlled by the orientation of the sample.

The nutritional status of the children can be measured by biochemical and hematological parameters and dietary assessment. The objectives of the present study were to evaluate the causes of the undernutrition in the surveyed Santal children, where high degree of undernutrition exists, by measuring selected hematological and biochemical parameters and dietary intake. Nutritional status was assessed by height-for-age Z-score. Total count of red blood cells (RBC count), packed cell volume (PCV), hemoglobin concentration (Hb%), mean corpuscular volume (MCV), mean corpuscular hemoglobin (MCH) and mean corpuscular hemoglobin concentration (MCHC) were measured. Biochemical parameters such as serum iron, total iron binding capacity (TIBC), serum ferritin, serum transferrin, transferrin saturation (TS) and serum albumin were also measured. Serum iron, serum ferritin, transferrin saturation, hemoglobin level and serum albumin of stunted children were significantly lower (p<0.05) than those in children of normal stature. Total iron binding capacity and serum transferrin of stunted children were significantly higher (p<0.05) than the values in children of normal stature. More than 29% of surveyed children were suffering from iron deficiency. Hemoglobin concentration was found to be strongly associated (p<0.001) with the nutritional status. Dietary intake of almost all nutrients in all age groups was found to be lower than the recommended dietary allowances (RDA) in both sexes. A mild iron deficiency was found in stunted Santal children. The various drugs and methods studied in an attempt to curb the haemodynamic stress response associated with conventional laryngoscopic endotracheal intubation have not been found to be ompletely satisfactory. The rise in heart rate can be detrimental to patients with mitral stenosis. This study was aimed to compare the heart rate responses to endotracheal intubation using conventional laryngoscope and with the help of intubating laryngeal mask airway (ILMA) in patients with isolated mitral stenosis. Thirty-four adult patients of either sex, aged between 18 and 40 years with isolated mitral stenosis to undergo closed mitral commissurotomy were randomly allocated into two groups : Group A (n=17)- To be intubated using laryngoscopy. Group B (n=17)- To be intubated with the help of ILMA. The heart rate was recorded immediately preinduction, just prior to introducing the intubating device and postintubation every minute up to first 5 minutes. On applying statistical tests, it was found that the median heart rate values in group A at 2, 3, 4 and 5 minutes postintubation were significantly higher than in group B (p<0.05). Although use of both laryngosope and ILMA for endotracheal intubation was associated with rise in heart rate, the rise was less with ILMA compared to laryngoscope. Hence, it can be concluded that use of ILMA may be a preferable device for endotracheal intubation laryngoscopy in patients with isolated mitral stenosis.

Objective: To study the prevalence of celiac disease in Indian children with Down syndrome and evaluate its clinical and laboratory predictors., Methods: Prevalence of celiac disease (CD) was assessed in 100 patients with Down syndrome (DS) attending pediatric genetic clinic at All India Institute of Medical Sciences,in a prospective observational study, based on the characteristic symptomatology, positive indirect immunofluorescence anti endomyseal antibody(anti EMA) test and duodenal histology based on adapted Marsh criteria. Clinical and laboratory features were compared in children having both CD and DS and those with DS alone., Results: Anti EMA was positive in 7 out of 100 patients screened for CD; 6 in whom the duodenal biopsy could be done showed histopathological features consistent with celiac disease. Amongst various clinical features evaluated as possible risk factors; pallor reached statistical significance (OR = 7.04 95%CI 1.08-45.7). In addition anemia (Hb <11 g%) was significantly associated with CD (p = 0.06)., Conclusions: The present results showed a high prevalence of CD in DS children in a tertiary hospital in India and low hemoglobin to be an important risk factor. The authors recommend that all Indian children with Down syndrome, particularly those with anemia should be screened for celiac disease.

Chirality is present at all levels of structural hierarchy of protein and plays a significant role in protein biosynthesis. The macromolecules involved in protein biosynthesis such as aminoacyl tRNA synthetase and ribosome have chiral subunits. Despite the omnipresence of chirality in the biosynthetic pathway, its origin, role in current pathway, and importance is far from understood. In this review we first present an introduction to biochirality and its relevance to protein biosynthesis. Major propositions about the prebiotic origin of biomolecules are presented with particular reference to proteins and nucleic acids. The problem of the origin of homochirality is unresolved at present. The chiral discrimination by enzymes involved in protein synthesis is essential for keeping the life process going. However, questions remained pertaining to the mechanism of chiral discrimination and concomitant retention of biochirality. We discuss the experimental evidence which shows that it is virtually impossible to incorporate D-amino acids in protein structures in present biosynthetic pathways via any of the two major steps of protein synthesis, namely aminoacylation and peptide bond formation reactions. Molecular level explanations of the stringent chiral specificity in each step are extended based on computational analysis. A detailed account of the current state of understanding of the mechanism of chiral discrimination during aminoacylation in the active site of aminoacyl tRNA synthetase and peptide bond formation in ribosomal peptidyl transferase center is presented. Finally, it is pointed out that the understanding of the mechanism of retention of enantiopurity has implications in developing novel enzyme mimetic systems and biocatalysts and might be useful in chiral drug design.

Controlling the emission properties of fluorophores is essential for improving the performance of fluorescence-based techniques in modern biochemical research, medical diagnosis, and sensing. Fluorescence emission is isotropic in nature, which makes it difficult to capture more than a small fraction of the total emission. Metal- dielectric-metal (MDM) substrates, discussed in this Letter, convert isotropic fluorescence into beaming emission normal to the substrate. This improves fluorescence collection efficiency and also opens up new avenues for a wide range of fluorescence-based applications. We suggest that MDM substrates can be readily adapted for multiple uses, such as in microarray formats, for directional fluorescence studies of multiple probes or for molecule-specific sensing with a high degree of spatial control over the fluorescence emission., Section: Physical Processes in Nanomaterials and Nanostructures.

The present study was undertaken to explore whether the skinfold thickness can be used in assessing the nutritional status in 5-12 years aged Santal children of Purulia district of West Bengal and to determine the sensitivity of these parameters for measuring the nutritional status. Height, weight and skinfold thickness of triceps (TRSF), biceps, suprailiac, subscapula (SBSF) and calf of Santal children were measured. Growth curves of TRSF-forage and SBSF-for-age in Santal children are placed at lower level of reference values indicating prevailed undernutrition in surveyed children. The SBSF for boys and TRSF for girls are significantly associated with nutritional status. Present study suggests that SBSF for boys and TRSF for girls are more sensitive than other skinfold thickness for the assessment of nutritional status in Santal children. Relationship of growth pattern of skinfold thickness is different in undernourished Santal children compared to well-nourished Santal children.
