Binary neutron stars mergers widely accepted as potential progenitors of short gamma-ray bursts. After the remnant of the merger has collapsed to a black hole, a jet is powered and may breakout from the the matter expelled during the collision and the subsequent wind emission. The interaction of the jet with the ejecta may affect its dynamics and the resulting electromagnetic counterparts. We here examine how an inhomogeneous and anisotropic distribution of ejecta affects such dynamics, dictating the properties of the jet-ejecta cocoon and of the afterglow radiated by the jet upon deceleration. More specifically, we carry out general-relativistic hydrodynamical simulations of relativistic jets launched within a variety of geometrically inhomogeneous and anisotropic distributions of ejected matter. We find that different anisotropies impact the variance of the afterglow light-curves as a function of the jet luminosity and ejected mass. A considerable amount of the jet energy is deposited in the cocoon through the jet-ejecta interaction with a small but important dependence on the properties of the ejecta. Furthermore, all configurations show a two-component behaviour for the polar structure of the jet, with a narrow core at large energies and Lorentz factors and a shallow segment at high latitudes from the jet axis. Hence, afterglows measured on off-axis lines of sight could be used to deduce the properties of the ejected matter, but also that the latter need to be properly accounted for when modelling the afterglow signal and the jet-launching mechanisms., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures. The recent development of large language models (LLMs) with multi-billion parameters, coupled with the creation of user-friendly application programming interfaces (APIs), has paved the way for automatically generating and executing code in response to straightforward human queries. This paper explores how these emerging capabilities can be harnessed to facilitate complex scientific workflows, eliminating the need for traditional coding methods. We present initial findings from our attempt to integrate Phyloflow with OpenAI's function-calling API, and outline a strategy for developing a comprehensive workflow management system based on these concepts.

Previous works have argued that future gravitational-wave detectors will be able to probe the properties of astrophysical environments where binary coalesce, including accretion disks, but also dark matter structures. Most analyses have resorted to a Newtonian modelling of the environmental effects, which are not suited to study extreme-mass-ratio inspirals immersed in structures of ultra-light bosons. In this letter, we use relativistic perturbation theory to consistently study these systems in spherical symmetry. We compute the flux of scalar particles and the rate at which orbital energy (and angular momentum) is dissipated via gravitational radiation and depletion of scalars, i.e. dynamical friction. The threat of hardware Trojans (HTs) in security-critical IPs like cryptographic accelerators poses severe security risks. The HT detection methods available today mostly rely on golden models and detailed circuit specifications. Often they are specific to certain HT payload types, making pre-silicon verification difficult and leading to security gaps. We propose a novel formal verification method for HT detection in non-interfering accelerators at the Register Transfer Level (RTL), employing standard formal property checking. Our method guarantees the exhaustive detection of any sequential HT independently of its payload behavior, including physical side channels. It does not require a golden model or a functional specification of the design. Let $\mathcal{A}$ be a set of straight lines in the plane (or planes in $\mathbb{R}^3$). The $k$-crossing visibility of a point $p$ on $\mathcal{A}$ is the set $Q$ of points in the elements of $\mathcal{A}$ such that the segment $pq$, where $q\in Q$, intersects at most $k$ elements of $\mathcal{A}$. In this paper, we present algorithms for computing the $k$-crossing visibility. Specifically, we provide $O(n\log n + kn)$ and $O(n\log n + k^2n)$ time algorithms for sets of $n$ lines in the plane and arrangements of $n$ planes in $\mathbb{R}^3$, which are optimal for $k=\Omega(\log n)$ and $k=\Omega(\sqrt{\log n})$, respectively. We also introduce an algorithm for computing $k$-crossing visibilities on polygons, which achieves the same asymptotic time complexity as the one presented by Bahoo et al. The techniques proposed in this paper can be easily adapted for computing $k$-crossing visibilities on other instances where the $(\leq k)$-level is known.

Emergent modified gravity presents a new set of generally covariant gravitational theories in which the space-time metric is not directly given by one of the fundamental fields. A metric compatible with the modified dynamics of gravity is instead derived from covariance conditions for space-time in canonical form. This paper presents a significant extension of existing vacuum models to the case of a scalar field coupled to emergent modified gravity in a spherically symmetric setting. Unlike in previous attempts for instance in models of loop quantum gravity, it is possible to maintain general covariance in the presence of modified gravity-scalar couplings. In general, however, the emergent space-time metric depends not only on the phase-space degrees of freedom of the gravitational part of the coupled theory, but also on the scalar field. Matter therefore directly and profoundly affects the geometry of space-time, not only through the well-known dynamical coupling of stress-energy to curvature as in Einstein's equation, but even on a kinematical level before equations of motion are solved. This paper introduces further physical requirements that may be imposed for a reduction of modified theories to more specific classes, in some cases eliminating certain modifications that would be possible in a vacuum situation. With minimal coupling, results about the removal of classical black-hole singularities in vacuum emergent modified gravity are found to be unstable under the inclusion of matter, but alternative modifications exist in which singularities are removed even in the presence of matter. Emergent modified gravity is a canonical theory based on general covariance where the spacetime is not fundamental, but rather an emergent object. This feature allows for modifications of the classical theory and can be used to model new effects, such as those suggested by quantum gravity. We discuss how matter fields can be coupled to emergent modified gravity, realize the coupling of the perfect fluid, identify the symmetries of the system, and explicitly obtain the Hamiltonian in spherical symmetry. We formulate the Oppenheimer-Snyder collapse model in canonical terms, permitting us to extend the model to emergent modified gravity and obtain an exact solution to the dust collapsing from spatial infinity including some effects suggested by quantum gravity. In this solution the collapsing dust forms a black hole, then the star radius reaches a minimum with vanishing velocity and finite positive acceleration, and proceeds to emerge out now behaving as a white hole. While the geometry on the minimum-radius surface is regular in the vacuum, it is singular in the presence of dust. However, the fact that the geometry is emergent, and the fundamental fields that compose the phase-space are regular, allows us to continue the canonical solution in a meaningful way, obtaining the global structure for the interior of the star. The star-interior solution is complemented by the vacuum solution describing the star-exterior region by a continuous junction at the star radius. This gluing process can be viewed as the imposition of boundary conditions, which is non-unique and does not follow from the equations of motion. This ambiguity gives rise to different possible physical outcomes of the collapse. LISA, the Laser Interferometer Space Antenna, will usher in a new era in gravitational-wave astronomy. As the first anticipated space-based gravitational-wave detector, it will expand our view to the millihertz gravitational-wave sky, where a spectacular variety of interesting new sources abound: from millions of ultra-compact binaries in our Galaxy, to mergers of massive black holes at cosmological distances; from the beginnings of inspirals that will venture into the ground-based detectors' view to the death spiral of compact objects into massive black holes, and many sources in between. Central to realising LISA's discovery potential are waveform models, the theoretical and phenomenological predictions of the pattern of gravitational waves that these sources emit. Muscle volume is a useful quantitative biomarker in sports, but also for the follow-up of degenerative musculo-skelletal diseases. In addition to volume, other shape biomarkers can be extracted by segmenting the muscles of interest from medical images. Manual segmentation is still today the gold standard for such measurements despite being very time-consuming. We propose a method for automatic segmentation of 18 muscles of the lower limb on 3D Magnetic Resonance Images to assist such morphometric analysis. By their nature, the tissue of different muscles is undistinguishable when observed in MR Images. Thus, muscle segmentation algorithms cannot rely on appearance but only on contour cues. However, such contours are hard to detect and their thickness varies across subjects. To cope with the above challenges, we propose a segmentation approach based on a hybrid architecture, combining convolutional and visual transformer blocks. We investigate for the first time the behaviour of such hybrid architectures in the context of muscle segmentation for shape analysis. Considering the consistent anatomical muscle configuration, we rely on transformer blocks to capture the longrange relations between the muscles. To further exploit the anatomical priors, a second contribution of this work consists in adding a regularisation loss based on an adjacency matrix of plausible muscle neighbourhoods estimated from the training data. Our experimental results on a unique database of elite athletes show it is possible to train complex hybrid models from a relatively small database of large volumes, while the anatomical prior regularisation favours better predictions.

A new class of modified gravity theories, made possible by subtle features of the canonical formulation of general covariance, naturally allows MOND-like behavior (MOdified Newtonian Dynamics) in effective space-time solutions without introducing new fields. A detailed analysis reveals a relationship with various quantum-gravity features, in particular in canonical approaches, and shows several properties of potential observational relevance. A fundamental origin of MOND and a corresponding solution to the dark-matter problem are therefore possible and testable., Comment: 11 pages

The existence of merging black hole-neutron star (BHNS) binaries has been ascertained through the observation of their gravitational wave (GW) signals. However, to date, no definitive electromagnetic (EM) emission has been confidently associated with these mergers. Such an association could help unravel crucial information on these systems, for example, their BH spin distribution, the equation of state (EoS) of NS and the rate of heavy element production. We model the multi-messenger (MM) emission from BHNS mergers detectable during the fourth (O4) and fifth (O5) observing runs of the LIGO-Virgo-KAGRA GW detector network, in order to provide detailed predictions that can help enhance the effectiveness of observational efforts and extract the highest possible scientific information from such remarkable events. Our methodology is based on a population synthesis-approach, which includes the modelling of the signal-to-noise ratio of the GW signal in the detectors, the GW-inferred sky localization of the source, the kilonova (KN) optical and near-infrared light curves, the relativistic jet gamma-ray burst (GRB) prompt emission peak photon flux, and the GRB afterglow light curves in the radio, optical and X-ray bands. The resulting prospects for BHNS MM detections during O4 are not promising, with a GW detection rate of $15.0^{+15.4}_{-8.8}$ yr$^{-1}$, but joint MM rates of $\sim 10^{-1}$ yr$^{-1}$ for the KN and $\sim 10^{-2}$ yr$^{-1}$ for the jet-related emission. In O5 we find an overall increase in expected detection rates by around an order of magnitude, owing to both the enhanced sensitivity of the GW detector network, and the coming online of future EM facilities. Finally, we discuss direct searches for the GRB radio afterglow with large-field-of-view instruments as a new possible follow-up strategy in the context of ever-dimming prospects for KN detection., Comment: Submitted to A&A. 17 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables.
