Abstract Background Cardiac cavernous hemangiomas are extremely rare and usually difficult to be diagnosed for being asymptomatic. Case presentation An asymptomatic 56-year-old woman was hospitalized due to a heart mass found by chest computed tomography (CT) during her annual physical examination. Coronary computed tomography angiography (CTA) disclosed a tumorous lesion, located in the left atrial roof and extended to the posterior wall of the aortic root and surrounding the left main coronary artery. However, there was no communicating branches between the hemangioma and coronary artery and no coronary artery stenosis. The tumor was excised with low-frequency electrocautery under cardiopulmonary bypass. The histopathological examination indicated the mass a cavernous hemangioma. The patient was discharged with an uneventful recovery. Conclusions Here we presented a rare case of successfully excision of a cavernous hemangioma involving the left atrial roof and left coronary artery. We advocate adequate exposure and complete surgical excision with low-frequency electrocautery to avoid remnants and excessive resection.

For the first time, toxic bio-tars collected from the gasification of pine sawdust are used as the precursor for activated carbons. Various types of activation agents including KOH, K2CO3, H3PO4 and ZnCl2 were screened for obtaining superior activated carbons. When KOH was used as an activation agent, the obtained activated carbons exhibited high specific surface area and large mesopore volume. The activated carbons were further employed to be the electrode material of supercapacitors, and its specific capacitance reached up to 260 F g−1 at 0.25 A g−1 current density. Also, it showed an excellent rate performance from preserving a relatively high specific capacitance of 151 F g−1 at 50 A g−1. The assembled device also exhibited the good electrochemical stability with the capacity retention of 90% after 5000 cycles. Furthermore, the maximum energy density of the activated carbons in organic electrolyte reached 17.8 Wh kg−1. Keywords: Tars, Activated carbon, Potassium hydroxide, Supercapacitors, Gasification

Abstract Background The important roles of microbial flora in tick biology and ecology have received much attention. Dermacentor marginatus and Dermacentor reticulatus are known vectors of various pathogens across Europe, including Slovakia. However, their bacterial microbiomes are poorly explored. Methods In this study, bacterial microbiomes of field-collected D. marginatus and D. reticulatus from Slovakia were characterized using 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing. Results Different analyses demonstrated that the D. marginatus and D. reticulatus microbiomes differ in their diversity and taxonomic structures. Furthermore, species- and sex-specific bacteria were detected in the two species. A possible bacterial pathogen “Candidatus Rhabdochlamydia sp.” was detected from D. marginatus males. Among the observed bacteria, Rickettsia showed high abundance in the two species. Several maternally inherited bacteria such as Coxiella, Arsenophonus, Spiroplasma, Francisella and Rickettsiella, were abundant, and their relative abundance varied depending on tick species and sex, suggesting their biological roles in the two species. Conclusions The bacterial microbiomes of field-collected D. marginatus and D. reticulatus were shaped by tick phylogeny and sex. Maternally inherited bacteria were abundant in the two species. These findings are valuable for understanding tick-bacteria interactions, biology and vector competence of ticks.

Abstract Background Pluripotent stem cell-derived cardiomyocytes (PSC-CMs) are widely used models for regenerative medicine and disease research. However, PSC-CMs are usually immature in morphology and functionality and the maturity of PSC-CMs could not be determined accurately. In order to reasonably interpret the experimental results obtained by PSC-CMs, it is necessary to evaluate the maturity of PSC-CMs and find the key genes related to maturation. Methods Using the gene expression profiles of normal adult cardiac tissue and embryonic stem cell (ESC) samples, we identified gene pairs with identically relative expression orderings (REOs) within adult cardiac tissue but reversely identical in ESCs. Then, for a PSC-CM model, we calculated the maturity score as the percentage of these gene pairs that exhibit the same REOs in adult cardiac tissue. Lastly, the CellComp method was used to identify the maturation-related genes. Results The maturity score increased gradually from 0.8401 for 18-week fetal cardiac tissue to 0.9997 for adult cardiac tissue. For four human PSC-CM models, the mature scores increased with prolonged culture time but were all below 0.8. The genes involved in energy metabolism, angiogenesis, immunity, and proliferation were dysregulated in the 1-year PSC-CMs compared with adult cardiac tissue. Conclusion We proposed a qualitative transcriptional signature to score the maturity degree of PSC-CMs. This score can reasonably track the maturity of PSC-CMs and be used to compare different PSC-CM culture methods.

In recent years, intelligent fault diagnosis technology with the deep learning algorithm has been widely used in the manufacturing industry for substituting time-consuming human analysis method to enhance the efficiency of fault diagnosis. The rolling bearing as the connection between the rotor and support is the crucial component in rotating equipment. However, the working condition of the rolling bearing is under changing with complex operation demand, which will significantly degrade the performance of the intelligent fault diagnosis method. In this paper, a new deep transfer model based on Wasserstein distance guided multi-adversarial networks (WDMAN) is proposed to address this problem. The WDMAN model exploits complex feature space structures to enable the transfer of different data distributions based on multiple domain critic networks. The essence of our method is learning the shared feature representation by minimizing the Wasserstein distance between the source domain and target domain distribution in an adversarial training way. The experiment results demonstrate that our model outperforms the state-of-the-art methods on rolling bearing fault diagnosis under different working conditions. The t-distributed stochastic neighbor embedding (t-SNE) technology is used to visualize the learned domain invariant feature and investigate the transferability behind the great performance of our proposed model.

A landslide susceptibility map, which describes the quantitative relationship between known landslides and control factors, is essential to link the theoretical prediction with practical disaster reduction measures. In this work, the artificial neural network (ANN) model, a promising tool for mapping landslide susceptibility, was adopted to evaluate the coseismic landslide susceptibility affected by the 2013 Minxian, Gansu, China, Mw5.9 earthquake. The evaluation was based on the landslide inventory of this event containing 6479 landslides, and the terrain, geological and seismic factors from database available. During the analyses, two ANN models were applied: considering the entire factors aforementioned (CS model) and excluding seismic factors above (ES model). The success and predictive rates of ANN models and the cumulative percentage curves of susceptibility maps obtained from the models all indicate that the CS model has a relatively better performance than the ES model. However, the comparison of overlapping susceptibility areas suggests that 52.8% of the very high susceptibility areas derived from the CS model coincide with the ES model; and for the very low susceptibility areas, this proportion is 73.55%. Thus, it can be concluded that the assessment based on existing earthquake-induced landslides and the ES model could provide better background information for seismic landslide susceptibility mapping and disaster prevention.

Patients with EGFR-mutant non-small-cell lung cancer (NSCLC) greatly benefit from EGFR-tyrosine kinase inhibitors (EGFR-TKIs) while the prognosis of patients who lack EGFR-sensitive mutations (EGFR wild type, EGFR-WT) remains poor due to a lack of effective therapeutic strategies. There is an urgent need to explore the key genes that affect the prognosis and develop potentially effective drugs in EGFR-WT NSCLC patients. In this study, we clustered functional modules related to the survival traits of EGFR-WT patients using weighted gene co-expression network analysis (WGCNA). We used these data to establish a two-gene prognostic signature based on the expression of CYP11B1 and DNALI1 by combining the least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO) algorithms and Cox proportional hazards regression analysis. Following the calculation of risk score (RS) based on the two-gene signature, patients with high RSs showed a worse prognosis. We further explored targeted drugs that could be effective in patients with a high RS by the connectivity map (CMap). Surprisingly, multiple HDAC inhibitors (HDACis) such as trichostatin A (TSA) and vorinostat (SAHA) that may have efficacy were identified. Also, we proved that HDACis could inhibit the proliferation and metastasis of NSCLC cells in vitro. Taken together, our study identified prognostic biomarkers for patients with EGFR-WT NSCLC and confirmed a novel potential role for HDACis in the clinical management of EGFR-WT patients.

Succinylation is a newly discovered and multienzyme-regulated post-translational modification (PTM) that is associated with the initiation and progression of cancer. Currently, no systematic analyses on the role of succinylation regulators in tumors have been reported. In this study, we performed a comprehensive pan-cancer analysis on four well-known succinylation regulators (CPT1A, KAT2A, SIRT5, and SIRT7). We found that these regulators played specific and critical roles in the prognosis of clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). We constructed a risk score (RS) based on two independent prognostic prediction factors, CPT1A and KAT2A, and subsequently developed a nomogram model containing the RS, which showed good accuracy in the prediction of overall survival (OS) in ccRCC patients. Furthermore, we used the similar expression pattern of four succinylation regulators according to consensus clustering analysis to divide the patients into three clusters that exhibited prominently different OS as well as clinicopathological characteristics. Differently expressed genes (DEGs) and pathway enrichment analyses of three clusters indicated that succinylation regulators might promote malignant progression of ccRCC by regulating the infiltration of immune cells and RNA N6-methyladenosine (m6A) methylation. Importantly, our data suggest that CPT1A and SIRT5 might up-regulate and down-regulate the expression of LRPPRC and EIF3B, respectively. Our study systematically analyzed the prognostic predictive values of four succinylation regulators and revealed their potential mechanisms in ccRCC aggressiveness. These data provide new insight into the understanding of succinylation modification and present clinical evidence for its role in ccRCC treatments.

This study evaluated the allelopathy, uptake and accumulation, and potential agricultural and food safety risks of nicotine in broad bean (Vicia faba L.) during seed germination and seedling growth. Nicotine stress has an allelopathic inhibitory effect on seeds and a hormesis effect on germinated seeds and seedlings, which has an enhancement effect (100 mg kg−1) on the germinated seeds and an enhancement effect (200 mg kg−1) on the seedlings. Exogenous nicotine can be absorbed by broad bean roots from nicotine-contaminated soil and accumulated in the main organs of the seedlings, especially the leaves, which exceeded the maximum residue level (0.03 mg kg−1 DW) at 50 mg kg−1. Moreover, nicotine resulted in a bitter taste in the edible broad bean leaves, disrupting the balance of basic nutritional properties, decreasing sucrose, and increasing bitter substances such as choline and procyanidin. These results demonstrated that residual nicotine in the soil not only poses potential risks to sustainable agricultural development but also a food safety risk for consumers. The present study provides insight into the potential risks of nicotine in agroecosystems.

The Qaidam Basin has been the focus of sandstone-type uranium prospecting since the 1950s. In recent years, relying on the uranium geological survey project supported by the China Geological Survey, and the cooperation with the Qinhai oil company, drilling work at the Yuejin-II area in this basin has achieved breakthroughs on industrial-level sandstone-type uranium exploration. In this study, we present major, trace and REE geochemical analysis of the Qigequan Formation and the Shizigou Formation mudstones/silty mudstones collected from an industrial uranium ore drillholes in the Yuejin-II area. The Shizigou and Qigequan Formations exhibit signatures of non-intense alteration, low rock maturity and proximal provenance. The overall arid paleoclimatic conditions controlled the sedimentation of large volume of uranium rich materials. The period of relative humidity prompted the sedimentation of reduced agents. Aided by the neotectonic-induced slopes and tectonic windows, oxygenated fluids migrated along permeable layers and extracted the hexavalent uranium, transported in the form of uranyl ion (UO22+). When the oxygen–uranium-rich fluids finally infiltrated into the reductive sand body, the hexavalent uranium was reduced to tetravalent uranium and deposited in the form of uranium compounds. Large-scale and centrally distributed reductive sand bodies provided favorable ore storage space for the sandstone-type uranium mineralization in the Yuejin-II area.

The pore structure and the petrophysical properties are essential parameters during the marine and continental shale reservoir evaluation. In order to the reveal the mechanism of the pore parameters differences and discuss whether the controlling factors of pore structure have extensive influence in different lithologies. Based on the analysis of N2/CO2 isotherm adsorption, FE-SEM, and geomechanical test for the marine shale samples of Longmaxi Formation and continental shale samples of Yanchang Formation are undertaken. The results indicate that (1) Continental shale is a typical transversely isotropic, while marine shale can be considered a homogeneous rock on a centimeter scale. The lithological stratification is the main reason for the difference in petrophysical properties. (2) The thermal evolution degree has significant influence on the pore structure in shale samples except for TOC content, particularly for the micropores structure. (3) Since the matrix strength of shale is much greater than the strength of bedding planes, the continental shale tends to crack and fail along the weak surface of the bedding during the axial compression, showing a lower peak strength, while the marine shale presents main crack along the principal stress direction without activating the bedding crack.

The abnormal m6A modification caused by m6A modulators is a common feature of various tumors; however, little is known about which m6A modulator plays the most important role in triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC). In this study, when analyzing the influence of m6A modulators (METTL3, METTL14, WTAP, FTO, and ALKBH5) on the prognosis of breast cancer, especially in TNBC using several on-line databases, methyltransferase-like 3 (METTL3) was found to have low expression in breast cancer, and was closely associated with short-distance-metastasis-free survival in TNBC. Further investigation showed that knockdown of METTL3 could enhance the ability of migration, invasion, and adhesion by decreasing m6A level in TNBC cell lines. Collagen type III alpha 1 chain (COL3A1) was identified and verified as a target gene of METTL3. METTL3 could down-regulate the expression of COL3A1 by increasing its m6A methylation, ultimately inhibiting the metastasis of TNBC cells. Finally, with immunohistochemistry staining in breast cancer tissues, it was proved that METTL3 expression was negatively correlated with COL3A1 in TNBC, but not in non-TNBC. This study demonstrated the potential mechanism of m6A modification in metastasis and provided potential targets for treatment in TNBC.

Abstract Background Spinal cord injury (SCI) is one of the most severe central nervous system injuries. Currently, transplanting bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) is considered a therapeutic option for SCI. Tanshinone IIA (TIIA) is one of the extracts obtained from Salvia miltiorrhiza Bunge, which has been shown to have some protective effects against SCI. The present research was aimed to explore whether TIIA would influence the fate of transplanted BMSCs in a rat model of SCI, especially with regard to their differentiation into neuronal cells. Methods Bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells were obtained from immature rats and identified using flow cytometry. After SCI, 1.0 × 107 cells labeled with PKH67 were transfused into the injured spinal cord. TIIA was first injected into the tail vein (30 mg/kg) 1 h before surgery. From day 1 to day 7 post-SCI, TIIA was injected (20 mg/kg) per day at the same time. Recovery of locomotor function and histological regeneration of the spinal cord were compared among the groups, with the differentiation and distribution of BMSCs determined anatomically and biochemically by the expression of neural cell markers. Results Locomotor assessments showed that the rats in the BMSCs + TIIA group exhibited higher scores (19.33 ± 0.58) than those in the other groups (13.67 ± 1.53, 17.67 ± 0.58, 18.00 ± 1.73). The area of the cavity in the BMSCs + TIIA rats was smaller than that in the other groups (1.30 ± 0.56, 10.39 ± 1.59, 6.84 ± 1.18, 4.36 ± 0.69). Co-expression of glial fibrillary acid protein was observed in transplanted BMSCs, with a reduced rate in the BMSCs + TIIA group relative to that in the SCI group. In contrast, the expression levels of Nestin, neuron-specific nuclear protein (NeuN) and neurofilament protein 200 (NF200) were greatest in the transplanted cells in the BMSCs + TIIA group. Conclusions Tanshinone IIA treatment enhances the therapeutic effects of BMSC transplant on SCI, likely by promoting the differentiation of neuronal cells.

Mobile laser scanning (MLS) technology directly collects dense 3D coordinate information at expressway and satisfied with the demands of transportation-related road surveying. This paper aims to extract road curbs and road markings from MLS point clouds. The proposed method is based on the following approaches: 1) extracting and segmenting road surfaces and subsidiary facility point clouds from raw point clouds based on the GPS trajectory; 2) dynamically shifting the point clouds from the global coordinate system to block-based local coordinate systems; 3) estimating the curbs and centre points based on the block profiles and re-sampled point clouds; and 4) extracting road markings based on the passthrough-statistical-radius-filter. An application for an expressway and its interchange road is performed to test the proposed method. The mean deviation in the estimated road centres was 5.30 cm, which satisfies the demand for centimetre-scale road precision in expressway applications. The results illustrate that the proposed method is a precise alternative for expressway curb and marking extraction, and can be performed for horizontal analysis and lane navigation in intelligent transportation systems.

Common dispersive-type spectroscopic instruments include prism-type and grating-type, usually using a single dispersive element. The continuous imaging band is always limited by the dispersion angle. When it is necessary to image two wavebands with an ultra-spectral resolution that are far apart, the imaging is difficult due to the large diffraction angle. To broaden the spectral coverage of the imaging spectrometer, in this paper, we propose a dual-gratings imaging spectrometer with two independently rotating gratings. In this proposed system, two very far apart wavelength bands can be imaged in the adjacent areas by adjusting the angle of the dual gratings. This greatly expands the spectral coverage of the imaging spectrometer. Currently, the only application area considered for this instrument is solar applications. In this article, we present the optical system of the dual-gratings imaging spectrometer, illustrate several advantages of the new structure, and discuss new problems caused by the dual-gratings, which are referred to as overlap between two spectra and double image offset. We deduced the calculation process of the dual grating rotation angle, the relationship between the final acquired image and the slit, the relationship between the angle change between the dual gratings and the double image offset, and the relationship between the MTF upper limit reduction and the spatial frequency. This article also summarizes the shortcomings of this structure and studies the applicable fields under these shortcomings. At last, we simulate a dual-gratings imaging spectrometer system, compare this scheme with two traditional schemes, and conclude that this instrument has certain practical significance.

Understanding miRNAs regulatory roles in epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) would help establish new avenues for further uncovering the mechanisms underlying radiation-induced pulmonary fibrosis (RIPF) and identifying preventative and therapeutic targets. Here, we demonstrated that miR-541-5p repression by Myeloid Zinc Finger 1 (MZF1) promotes radiation-induced EMT and RIPF. Irradiation could decrease miR-541-5p expression in vitro and in vivo and inversely correlated to RIPF development. Ectopic miR-541-5p expression suppressed radiation-induced-EMT in vitro and in vivo. Knockdown of Slug, the functional target of miR-541-5p, inhibited EMT induction by irradiation. The upregulation of transcription factor MZF1 upon irradiation inhibited the expression of endogenous miR-541-5p and its primary precursor (pri-miR-541-5p), which regulated the effect of the Slug on the EMT process. Our finding showed that ectopic miR-541-5p expression mitigated RIPF in mice by targeting Slug. Thus, irradiation activates MZF1 to downregulate miR-541-5p in alveolar epithelial cells, promoting EMT and contributing to RIPF by targeting Slug. Our observation provides further understanding of the development of RIPF and determines potential preventative and therapeutic targets.

The Helically coiled tube Once-Through Steam Generator (H-OTSG) is a key piece of equipment for compact small reactors. The present study developed and verified a thermal–hydraulic design and performance analysis computer code for a countercurrent H-OTSG installed in a small pressurized water reactor. The H-OTSG is represented by one characteristic tube in the model. The secondary side of the H-OTSG is divided into single-phase liquid region, nucleate boiling region, postdryout region, and single-phase vapor region. Different heat transfer correlations and pressure drop correlations are reviewed and applied. To benchmark the developed physical models and the computer code, H-OTSGs developed in Marine Reactor X and System-integrated Modular Advanced ReacTor are simulated by the code, and the results are compared with the design data. The overall characteristics of heat transfer area, temperature distributions, and pressure drops calculated by the code showed general agreement with the published data. The thermal–hydraulic characteristics of a typical countercurrent H-OTSG are analyzed. It is demonstrated that the code can be utilized for design and performance analysis of an H-OTSG.

Three species belonging to the genus Dermacentor (Acari: Ixodidae), D. marginatus, D. nuttalli and D. silvarum are well known as vectors for a great variety of infection pathogens. All three of them are host ticks, which are very similar in morphology characteristics, life cycle, seasonal variation and ecological conditions, making it difficult to distinguish the three species. In the present study, these three species were delimitated based on molecular data and ecological niche. The molecular analysis showed that the three species can be distinguished by COI and ITS2 sequences. We created future potential distribution maps for the three species under climate changes with MaxEnt, which highlighted the different levels of the suitable habitats for each tick species. In addition, niche comparisons among the three species in Dermacentor were conducted, and the analysis suggested that niche overlap was relatively high with D. nuttalli and D. silvarum compared to the other species pairs, which was consistent with the molecular data. Niche equivalency and similarity test confirmed that these Dermacentor species were closely related but distinct species. In conclusion, delimitation of these three species within Dermacentor was supported by molecular phylogeny and quantitative ecological space. This study will provide deep insights into the biology, ecology, and diversification processes within Dermacentor species, and for the development of effective control for ticks.

When an unloaded converter transformer is being energised, large inrush current may flow in the voltage jump side depending upon the residual flux in the core and the closing voltage angle of the power grid due to the hysteresis characteristics of the core, causing false operation of protective relays and bringing many adverse effects to the grid and primary electrical devices. Based on the analysis of the elimination of inrush current using controlled switching, the phase-to-phase electromagnetic coupling relationship which would be influenced by the core structure and winding connection mode was taken into account when considering the controlled switching strategy of three-phase transformer. With the analysis of core residual flux after de-energisation and the dynamic magnetisation of core during the energisation, a controlled switching strategy for inrush current restraining when energising converter transformer is presented in this study. Only the current arc quenching sequence during circuit breaker opening and the voltage extinguishing phase angle are asked for this strategy, and the simulation by electromagnetic transients programme and the experiment results indicate that this strategy could restrain the inrush transient efficiently.

The thermodynamic and mechanical properties of Cu46Zr46-xAl8Tix (x = 0, 1, 2, and 3 at.%) bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) were investigated. The experimental results indicate that the Cu46Zr46Al8 and Cu46Zr45Al8Ti1 alloys achieve good glass formation ability (GFA), whereas that of both Cu46Zr44Al8Ti2 and Cu46Zr43Al8Ti3 alloys are weak. The thermogravimetric curve is nonlinear from the glass transition temperature to the completion of crystallization temperature and may be related to the reaction of disordered atoms and oxygen and nitrogen atoms. The Cu46Zr45Al8Ti1 BMG with the work-hardening ability in these alloys has a large yield strength of 1870 MPa and a fracture strength of 2060 MPa. The average incubation time of the serrated flow in the elastic–plastic stage with the high work-hardening index is 1.3706 s, which is higher than that of the plastic deformation stage (0.9398 s) with the low work-hardening index. The nonlinear thermogravimetric curve of the supercooled liquid region and the average incubation time of the serrated flow are crucial to further understand the oxidizability and nitriding capacity of the disordered atoms and the mechanism of plastic strain in the metallic glass field.

Two Co(II)-based metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) with open channels, [(CH3)2NH2]2[Co5L(H2O)8]·4H2O (1) and [Co6L(DMF)2(H2O)8]·2H2O (2), were synthesized using resorcin[4]arene ligand (H12L). Compounds 1 and 2 exhibit different 3D microporous framework structures: 1 possesses two kinds of open channels parallel to the a-axis (ca. 5.0 × 5.0 Å) and the b-axis (ca. 4.0 × 6.0 Å), and 2 is an open framework with a window size of 5.6 × 5.6 Å. The activated crystal 1 involves many Lewis acid sites; thus, 1 shows prominent activity and recyclability for the reaction of carbon dioxide coupled with epoxides. Most strikingly, catalyst 1 can be reused for five successive cycles and provides outstanding catalytic activity.

The design of a computer-aided system for identifying the seizure onset zone (SOZ) from interictal and ictal electroencephalograms (EEGs) is desired by epileptologists. This study aims to introduce the statistical features of high-frequency components (HFCs) in interictal intracranial electroencephalograms (iEEGs) to identify the possible seizure onset zone (SOZ) channels. It is known that the activity of HFCs in interictal iEEGs, including ripple and fast ripple bands, is associated with epileptic seizures. This paper proposes to decompose multi-channel interictal iEEG signals into a number of subbands. For every 20 s segment, twelve features are computed from each subband. A mutual information (MI)-based method with grid search was applied to select the most prominent bands and features. A gradient-boosting decision tree-based algorithm called LightGBM was used to score each segment of the channels and these were averaged together to achieve a final score for each channel. The possible SOZ channels were localized based on the higher value channels. The experimental results with eleven epilepsy patients were tested to observe the efficiency of the proposed design compared to the state-of-the-art methods.

Alternaria alternata is an important phytopathogen causing fruit black rot and also producing a variety of mycotoxins, such as alternariol (AOH) and alternariol monomethyl ether (AME) as two main contaminants. This could lead to economic losses of agricultural products as well as human health risks. In this study, magnolol extracted from the traditional Chinese herb, Mangnolia officinalis, exhibited an obvious antifungal property and could completely suppress the mycelial growth at 100 μM. Morphological differences of A. alternata were observed to be significantly shrunk and wrinkled after the exposure to magnolol. Furthermore, AOH and AME were no longer produced in response to 50 μM of magnolol. To uncover the antifungal and antimycotoxigenic mechanisms, the transcriptomic profiles of A. alternata—treated with or without magnolol—were evaluated. The clustered genes responsible for AOH and AME biosynthesis were obviously less transcribed under magnolol stress and this was further confirmed by qRT-PCR. The global regulators of carbon and nitrogen utilization, such as CreA and NmrA, were significantly down-regulated and this possibly caused the reduction in mycotoxins. In addition, fatty acid β-oxidation was regarded to contribute to polyketide mycotoxin production for the supply of precursor acetyl-CoA while the expression of these related genes was inhibited. The response to magnolol led to the marked alteration of oxidative stress and the down-expression of the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) signaling pathway from the transcriptome data and the determination of peroxidase (POD), superoxide dismutase (SOD) and glutathione (GSH) assays. This above might be the very reason for the growth supression and mycotoxin production of A. alternata by magnolol. This study provides new insights into its potential as an important active ingredient for the control of A. alternata and its mycotoxins in fruits and their products.

To address the miniaturization of the spectral imaging system required by a mounted platform and to overcome the low luminous flux caused by current spectroscopic technology, we propose a method for the multichannel measurement of spectra using a broadband filter in this work. The broadband filter is placed in front of a lens, and the spectral absorption characteristics of the broadband filter are used to achieve the modulation of the incident spectrum of the detection target and to establish a mathematical model for the detection of the target. The spectral and spatial information of the target can be obtained by acquiring data using a push-broom method and reconstructing the spectrum using the GCV-based Tikhonov regularization algorithm. In this work, we compare the accuracy of the reconstructed spectra using the least-squares method and the Tikhonov algorithm based on the L-curve. The effect of errors in the spectral modulation function on the accuracy of the reconstructed spectra is analyzed. We also analyze the effect of the number of overdetermined equations on the accuracy of the reconstructed spectra and consider the effect of detector noise on the spectral recovery. A comparison between the known data cubes and our simulation results shows that the spectral image quality based on broadband filter reduction is better, which validates the feasibility of the method. The proposed method of combining broadband filter-based spectroscopy with a panchromatic imaging process for measurement modulation rather than spectroscopic modulation provides a new approach to spectral imaging.

How to perform imaging beyond the diffraction limit has always been an essential subject for the research of optical systems. One effective way to achieve this purpose is Fourier ptychography, which has been widely used in microscopic imaging. However, microscopic imaging measurement technology cannot be directly extended to imaging macro objects at long distances. In this paper, a reconstruction algorithm is proposed to solve the need for oversampling low-resolution images, and it is successfully applied to macroscopic imaging. Compared with the traditional FP technology, the proposed sub-sampling method can significantly reduce the number of iterations in reconstruction. Experiments prove that the proposed method can reconstruct low-resolution images captured by the camera and achieve high-resolution imaging of long-range macroscopic objects.

The effect of airflow rate, biomass moisture content, particle size, and compactness on the surface properties of biochar produced in a top-lit updraft gasifier was investigated. Pine woodchips were studied as the feedstock. The carbonization airflow rates from 8 to 20 L/min were found to produce basic biochars (pH > 7.0) that contained basic functional groups. No acid functional groups were presented when the airflow increased. The surface charge of biochar at varying airflow rates showed that the cation exchange capacity increased with airflow. The increase in biomass moisture content from 10 to 14% caused decrease in the pH from 12 to 7.43, but the smallest or largest particle sizes resulted in low pH; therefore, the carboxylic functional groups increased. Similarly, the biomass compactness exhibited a negative correlation with the pH that reduced with increasing compactness level. Thus, the carboxylic acid functional groups of biochar increased from 0 to 0.016 mmol g−1, and the basic functional group decreased from 0.115 to 0.073 mmol g−1 when biomass compactness force increased from 0 to 3 kg. BET (Brunauer-Emmett-Teller) surface area of biochar was greater at higher airflow and smaller particle size, lower moisture content, and less compactness of the biomass.

Classifying point clouds obtained from mobile laser scanning of road environments is a fundamental yet challenging problem for road asset management and unmanned vehicle navigation. Deep learning networks need no prior knowledge to classify multiple objects, but often generate a certain amount of false predictions. However, traditional clustering methods often involve leveraging a priori knowledge, but may lack generalisability compared to deep learning networks. This paper presents a classification method that coarsely classifies multiple objects of road infrastructure with a symmetric ensemble point (SEP) network and then refines the results with a Euclidean cluster extraction (ECE) algorithm. The SEP network applies a symmetric function to capture relevant structural features at different scales and select optimal sub-samples using an ensemble method. The ECE subsequently adjusts points that have been predicted incorrectly by the first step. The experimental results indicate that this method effectively extracts six types of road infrastructure elements: road surfaces, buildings, walls, traffic signs, trees and streetlights. The overall accuracy of the SEP-ECE method improves by 3.97% with respect to PointNet. The achieved average classification accuracy is approximately 99.74 % , which is suitable for practical use in transportation network management.

Because of the impacts of extreme climate, the severity, areal extent, and frequency of rainstorm events are rapidly increasing, especially in the Huai River Basin of China. This article is based on hourly precipitation data of 229 meteorological stations from 1951 through 2012, combined with statistical and meteorological theory. We used the Mann-Kendall mutation test, moving t-test, and inverse distance weighting spatial interpolation to analyze the spatiotemporal evolution of precipitation, duration, intensity, and frequency of isolated rainstorm events under climate change. The main results are as follows: (1) isolated rainstorm events were obviously bimodal and their occurrence moved backward in time. Their average duration and time of maximum intensities changed dramatically, without a significant increasing trend. The period since the 2000s has seen an increase of rainstorms and their temporal regression across the entire basin. (2) The intensity of isolated rainstorm events in the study area decreased, but precipitation, its duration, areal extent, and frequency had increasing trends basin-wide. (3) Four rainstorm event indices were examined for the period of 1990–2000. Relative to the years before 2003, the average precipitation increased by 2.1%, the average total duration by 8.1%, and the average frequency of occurrence by 25.5%. All indices show smaller minimum and larger maximum values. Overall, the isolated rainstorm events tended to increase.

Abstract Background The survival of overwintering ticks, is critical for their subsequent population dynamics in the spring, and consequent transmission of tick-borne diseases. Survival is largely influenced by the severity of the winter temperatures and their degree of cold hardiness at the overwintering stage. The bush tick Haemaphysalis longicornis, is widely distributed in China, and can transmit various pathogens that pose serious medical/veterinary problems. In the present study we investigated the effect of low temperature stress to tick survival, super-cooling point and body content of water, glycerol and total protein. Methods After various temperature acclimations, the super-cooling point was measured by Ni/CrNi-thermocouples with a precision temperature recorder. Water content was determined from weight loss of the sample exposed to 60°C for 48 h. Glycerol content was determined using Free Glycerol Reagent as directed by the manufacturer, and total protein was determined using the Bradford assay. Results The 50% mortality temperatures for the adults and nymphs were -13.7°C and -15.2°C, respectively; and the discriminating temperatures for the adults and nymphs were -16.0°C and -17.0°C, respectively. The super-cooling points of the adults and nymphs were -19.0°C and -22.7°C, respectively. The water content of adult H. longicornis decreased substantially after acclimation at 0°C for 10 d, whereas the nymphs decreased after acclimation at 0°C for 20 d, and the glycerol and proteins of both nymphs and adults were significantly increased (p

The objective of this study was to evaluate phenolic compounds produced from the catalytic pyrolysis of pine sawdust by commercial catalysts. Eight types of commercial catalysts consisting of SiO2, montmorillonite, α-Fe2O3, HZSM-5 (Si:Al = 25:1), ZnO, γ-Fe2O3, HZSM-5 (Si:Al = 50:1), and nano-HZSM-5 (Si:Al = 50:1) were screened in a fixed bed reactor at a reaction temperature of 500 °C and a vapor residence time of 3 s. All the tested commercial catalysts exhibited different catalytic performances for the adjustment of the composition of the bio-oil. HZSM-5 (Si:Al = 25:1) significantly increased hydrocarbon production in the bio-oil, which is helpful for improving its heating value. The different types of phenols were reduced significantly from 17 to 7 with nano-HZSM-5 (Si:Al = 50:1); however, the phenols content also decreased from 32.6% to 23.28% compared with non-catalytic pyrolysis. Meanwhile, the addition of nano-HZSM-5 (Si:Al = 50:1) to the raw material provided the highest amount of furans (up to 38.8%) among the tested commercial catalysts. The inexpensive ZnO and γ-Fe2O3 also were surprisingly effective for the reduction of the variety of phenolic compounds detected by GC/MS, reducing that number from 17 to 10.

Alternaria alternata is a critical phytopathogen that causes foodborne spoilage and produces a polyketide mycotoxin, alternariol (AOH), and its derivative, alternariol monomethyl ether (AME). In this study, the inhibitory effects of the essential oil citral on the fungal growth and mycotoxin production of A. alternata were evaluated. Our findings indicated that 0.25 μL/mL (222.5 μg/mL) of citral completely suppressed mycelial growth as the minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC). Moreover, the 1/2MIC of citral could inhibit more than 97% of the mycotoxin amount. Transcriptomic profiling was performed by comparative RNA-Seq analysis of A. alternata with or without citral treatment. Out of a total of 1334 differentially expressed genes (DEGs), 621 up-regulated and 713 down-regulated genes were identified under citral stress conditions. Numerous DEGs for cell survival, involved in ribosome and nucleolus biogenesis, RNA processing and metabolic processes, and protein processing, were highly expressed in response to citral. However, a number of DEGs responsible for the metabolism of several carbohydrates and amino acids, sulfate and glutathione metabolism, the metabolism of xenobiotics and transporter activity were significantly more likely to be down-regulated. Citral induced the disturbance of cell integrity through the disorder of gene expression, which was further confirmed by the fact that exposure to citral caused irreversibly deleterious disruption of fungal spores and the inhibition of ergosterol biosynthesis. Citral perturbed the balance of oxidative stress, which was likewise verified by a reduction of total antioxidative capacity. In addition, citral was able to modulate the down-regulation of mycotoxin biosynthetic genes, including pksI and omtI. The results provide new insights for exploring inhibitory mechanisms and indicate citral as a potential antifungal and antimytoxigenic alternative for cereal storage.

The microstructural and mechanical properties of β-type Ti85-xNb10+xSn5 (x = 0, 3, 6, 10 at.%) alloys with low elastic modulus were investigated. The experimental results show that the Ti85Nb10Sn5 and Ti75Nb20Sn5 alloys are composed of simple α and β phases, respectively; the Ti82Nb13Sn5 and Ti79Nb16Sn5 alloys are composed of β and α″ phases. The content of martensite phase decreases with the increase of Nb content. The Ti82Nb13Sn5 and Ti79Nb16Sn5 alloys show an inverse martensitic phase transition during heating. The Ti85Nb10Sn5 and Ti82Nb13Sn5 alloys with the small residual strain exhibit the good superelastic properties in 10-time cyclic loading. The reduced elastic modulus (Er) of the Ti75Nb20Sn5 alloy (61 GPa) measured by using the nanoindentation technique is 2−6 times of that of human bone (10−30 GPa), and is smaller than that of commercial Ti-6Al-4V biomedical alloy (120 GPa). The Ti75Nb20Sn5 alloy can be considered as a novel biomedical alloy. The wear resistance (H/Er) and anti-wear capability (H3/Er2) values of the four alloys are higher than those of the CP−Ti alloy (0.0238), which indicates that the present alloys have good wear resistance and anti-wear capability.

Numerous studies have found that people tend to commit prosocial acts subsequent to previous immoral acts, as a response to the latter. This phenomenon is called moral cleansing or moral compensation. However, the specific mechanism how previous immoral acts motivate moral compensatory behaviors is still not fully understood. This study aimed to examine the roles of guilt and moral identity in the relation between previous immoral acts and subsequent prosocial behaviors to clarify the mechanism. Based on the extant research, the current study proposed a moderated mediation model to illustrate the process of moral cleansing. Specifically, a previous immoral act motivates guilt, which further leads to subsequent prosocial behaviors, while moral identity facilitates this process. The participants were primed by a recalling task (immoral act vs. a neutral event). The results support the hypothesized model and provide a framework that explains moral cleansing by integrating the roles of guilt and moral identity. These findings highlight the dynamic nature of people’s morality with regard to how people adapt moral behaviors to protect their moral self-image.

We previously reported that the inflammasome inhibitor cucurbitacin D (CuD) induces apoptosis in human leukemia cell lines. Here, we investigated the effects of CuD and a B-cell lymphoma extra-large (Bcl-xL) inhibitor on autophagy in peripheral blood lymphocytes (PBL) isolated from adult T-cell leukemia (ATL) patients. CuD induced PBL cell death in patients but not in healthy donors. This effect was not significantly inhibited by treatment with rapamycin or 3-methyladenine (3-MA). The Bcl-xL inhibitor Z36 induced death in primary cells from ATL patients including that induced by CuD treatment, effects that were partly inhibited by 3-MA. Similarly, cell death induced by the steroid prednisolone was enhanced in the presence of Z36. A western blot analysis revealed that Z36 also promoted CuD-induced poly(ADP ribose) polymerase cleavage. Interestingly, the effects of CuD and Z36 were attenuated in primary ATL patient cells obtained upon recurrence after umbilical cord blood transplantation, as compared to those obtained before chemotherapy. Furthermore, cells from this patient expressed a high level of caspase-1, and treatment with caspase-1 inhibitor-enhanced CuD-induced cell death. Taken together, these results suggest that rescue from resistance to steroid drugs can enhance chemotherapy, and that caspase-1 is a good marker for drug resistance in ATL patients.

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) have been identified as key players in cardiomyocyte hypertrophy, which is associated with significant risks of heart failure. However, many microRNAs are still not recognized for their functions in pathophysiological processes. In this study, we evaluated effects of miR-218 in cardiomyocyte hypertrophy using both in vitro and in vivo models. We found that miR-218 was evidently downregulated in a transverse aortic constriction (TAC) mouse model. Overexpression of miR-218 is sufficient to reduce hypertrophy, whereas the suppression of miR-218 aggravates hypertrophy in primary cardiomyocytes induced by isoprenaline (ISO). In addition, we identified RE1-silencing transcription factor (REST) as a novel target of miR-218; it negatively regulated the expression of REST in hypertrophic cardiomyocytes and the TAC model. These results showed that miR-218 plays a crucial role in cardiomyocyte hypertrophy, likely via targeting REST, suggesting a potential candidate target for interfering hypertrophy.
