Abstract

Streptocephalus sirindhornae, new species, the first freshwater anostracan from Thailand, is wide-spread in the northeast of the country. It is morphologically closest to the Indian species S. dichotomus, but a sequence analysis of its SSU rDNA gene reveals that its closest relative is in fact the Indian species-pair S. dichotomus-S. simplex, that it is probably a conserved member of the S. dichotomus-group, and that it shares some relationship with the S. torvicornis-group.

116. Evaluation of pavement materials containing RAP aggregates and hydraulic binder for heavy traffic pavement

Abstract

Treatment with hydraulic binder is one of the techniques for recycling of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) recovered from road deconstruction. The combined presence of hydraulic binder and bituminous binder (from the RAP) in the mix makes it a composite material, on which the feedback from real road networks is still limited today and which has not yet been considered in the French rational pavement design method (RPDM). The addition of steel fibres in the composite mix allows minimising crack width, solution adopted by the steel fibre-reinforced roller-compacted concrete (FRCC™) technique. FRCC™ mixes with different fibres and RAP contents are compared with another RAP-based material treated with hydraulic binder, ERTALH®. The study discussed in this paper is part of the French National Research Agency project “Recyroute” which aims to evaluate the use of these composite materials in the base layer of heavy traffic roads. Mechanical properties of these composites were investigated by an extensive laboratory test programme. Performance of full-scale pavements was also evaluated throughout an accelerated pavement test (APT). This paper presents the main features and results of the laboratory test programme and the APT experiment as well, leading to propose design parameters of these innovative pavement structures, according to the French RPDM.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To determine the interobserver reliability of tympanograms obtained with the MicroTymp, a portable tympanometer. SETTING: Family medicine teaching unit in a tertiary care hospital. PATIENTS: Thirty-three patients who presented to the ear, nose and throat clinic in August 1990 for an ear problem. INTERVENTION: Three residents in family medicine independently attempted to record with the MicroTymp one tympanogram for the 66 ears. We excluded the results for seven ears for which tympanograms could not be obtained. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: Using objective criteria, two family physicians and two residents in family medicine independently classified the 177 tympanograms into five categories (normal, possible effusion, possible perforation, possible tympano-ossicular dysfunction and unclassifiable). Reliability was estimated by means of the kappa (kappa) coefficient on 161 tympanograms from 59 ears for which the interpretation of the three tympanograms agreed. MAIN RESULTS: The interpretation of the three tympanograms agreed for 34 of the 59 ears (0.58) (kappa = 0.52, 95% confidence limits 0.45 and 0.59). There was no significant difference in interobserver reliability between pairs of observers or between symptomatic and asymptomatic ears. CONCLUSIONS: The interobserver reliability of the MicroTymp is moderate. The tympanograms obtained with the instrument should be interpreted in the context of the clinical findings.

Bench scale and mini-pilot plant tests were carried out at Port Hope, Ontario, to demonstrate the economic and technical viability of ion exchange to recover trace uranium from non-process laundry and truck wash waste water. A fixed-bed system with three ion exchange columns containing Purolite A300 resin type II was used to treat water containing 10-200 mg/l U. The breakthrough limit, set at 0.1 mg/l U, was obtained after a minimum of 1 200 equivalent bed volumes; saturation was obtained at 3 300 equivalent bed volumes.
