Abstract: The results of a monitoring programme to assess the spatial impacts associated with ongoing dredged material disposal activity at a dispersive, coastal disposal site (southwest UK) are described. Benthic impacts were assessed using benthic community structure and secondary productivity estimates. Analyses of univariate indices (including secondary production) and multivariate community structure revealed differences between stations inside and those outside the disposal site were minimal. Generally, stations within and outside the disposal site were characterised by the same species. Regression models indicated that the variability in biological structure and secondary production was predominantly accounted for by natural variables (e.g., depth, sediment granulometry) with only a small amount of residual variability being due to contaminant variables. Thus, the elevated levels of certain contaminants in the vicinity of the disposal area were not sufficient to result in significant ecological or ecotoxicological changes. In many coastal regions, the disposal of dredged material constitutes the largest (albeit often localised) anthropogenic disturbance to the seabed. Impacts can be minimised by reducing the amount of sediment overburden on the bed at any one time allowing short-term recovery to proceed via the vertical migration of resident species. However, there is currently a limited understanding of the ability of such species to successfully vertically migrate. This study presents the findings of a field experiment to investigate the vertical migratory capability of temperate macroinvertebrate species following the placement of simulated dredged material. The relationships between vertical migration success with sediment characteristics (organic carbon and sand content) and placement depth were explicitly examined. While the polychaete worms Tharyx sp. A. and Streblospio shrubsolii showed poor vertical migration with only 6 cm of sediment overburden, the oligochaete Tubificoides benedii showed some recovery while the gastropod mollusc Hydrobia ulvae exhibited good migratory success, even with 16 cm of sediment overburden. While increases in sand content from 16% to 38% had no noticeable effect on vertical migration, increased sediment organic content from 0.8% to 3.3% detrimentally affected vertical migratory activity. The results support the theory that species' survival following sediment burial is trophic group-related. • Premise of the study: Root growth and architecture of Kosteletzkya pentacmpos and its response to nutrients and soil texture were studied to facilitate domestication of this plant as a biofuel crop (seeds for oil, stems for ethanol). Because it is salt tolerant, it does not compete with food crops for land. • Methods: Four soil treatments in the bottom chambers of two-chambered growing units (three nutrient levels in sandy loam and saline, dredged material) were used to test substrate influences on root structure and aerial growth in a greenhouse study. Simultaneously, underground reserves were determined by collecting aerial biomass of dark-grown plants. Root cores (15 x 50 cm) were taken to determine root architecture of 2-year-old field-grown plants. • Key results: High nutrient availability increased the coarse root biomass (≥2 mm diameter) and increased capsule production. Plants grown in dredged sediment had no substantial growth differences from the controls. Underground reserves were significant. Field cores demonstrated that roots extended more than 50 cm with most of the coarse roots in the upper 20 cm and the coarse to fine root ratio decreasing with depth. Fine root surface area, measured using image-analysis software, was substantially greater than many other crops, as was root mass density. • Conclusions: Root architecture of K. pentacarpos and its responses to various nutrient levels and soil types demonstrate that it is a promising species for further development as a crop on coastal saline land including dredged material sites. This paper presents a harmonised framework of sediment quality assessment and dredging material characterisation for estuaries and port zones of North and South Atlantic. This framework, based on the weight-of-evidence approach, provides a structure and a process for conducting sediment/dredging material assessment that leads to a decision. The main structure consists of "step 1" (examination of available data); "step 2" (chemical characterisation and toxicity assessment); "decision 1" (any chemical level higher than reference values? are sediments toxic?); "step 3" (assessment of benthic community structure); "step 4" (integration of the results); "decision 2" (are sediments toxic or benthic community impaired?); "step 5" (construction of the decisionmatrix) and "decision 3" (is there environmental risk?). The sequence of assessments may be interrupted when the information obtained is judged to be sufficient for a correct characterisation of the risk posed by the sediments/dredging material. This framework brought novel features compared to other sediment/dredging material risk assessment frameworks: data integration through multivariate analysis allows the identification of which samples are toxic and/or related to impaired benthic communities; it also discriminates the chemicals responsible for negative biological effects; and the framework dispenses the use of a reference area. We demonstrated the successful application of this framework in different port and estuarine zones of the North (Gulf of Cádiz) and South Atlantic (Santos and Paranaguá Estuarine Systems). To meet London Protocol requirements, South Korea is preparing to reduce the need for disposal of dredged material at sea. The new requirements controlling ocean disposal of dredged material pose significant challenges to the South Korean government, because the previous practice of offshore disposal of contaminated dredged material is no longer permitted. Hence, other alternatives for treating and disposing of contaminated dredged material are being evaluated and selected for implementation. A new management and decision approach is therefore needed for regulators and implementers to show what information and what decision-making processes were used to make the decision, to increase administrative transparency for such projects in the public domain. To address this need, an iterative approach was developed for dredged material management that includes the essential elements of process, people, and tools needed for successful environmental decision making. The approach has 6 steps: problem definition, developing objectives and criteria, identifying alternatives, performing the evaluation, comparing alternatives, and selecting the preferred alternative. The primary objective of the approach is to provide a systematic means of exploring contaminated dredged material management alternatives in South Korea using criteria that integrate risk with economic and stakeholder value information. The approach incorporates the desired decision-making attributes of transparency, comparative analysis, and inclusion of public input. Although it was developed for South Korea, the approach can be applied in any situation in which dredged material management alternatives are being considered to manage contaminated sediment risks. Many years of untreated effluent discharge from residential areas, a shipyard, a marina, and a large fish market resulted in substantial contamination of bottom sediment in Southern Busan Harbor, South Korea. Contaminants in these sediments include heavy metals and organic compounds. Newly introduced regulations for ocean disposal of dredged material in South Korea pose significant challenges, because the previous practice of offshore disposal of contaminated dredged material was no longer possible after August 2008. The South Korean government has mandated that such sediments be assessed in a way that identifies the most appropriate dredged material management alternative, addressing environmental, social, and cost objectives. An approach using multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA) in combination with comparative risk assessment was used as a systematic and transparent framework for prioritizing several dredged sediment management alternatives. We illustrate how MCDA can recognize the multiple goals of contaminated sediment management. Values used in weighting decision criteria were derived from surveys of stakeholders who were sediment management professionals, business owners, or government decision makers. The results of the analysis showed that land reclamation was the preferred alternative among cement-lock, sediment washing, 3 contained aquatic disposal alternatives (one in combination with a hopper dredge), geotextile tubes, solidification, and land reclamation after solidification treatment. Land reclamation was the preferred alternative, which performed well across all MCDA objectives, because of the availability of a near-shore confined disposal facility within a reasonable distance from the dredging area. Sediment toxicity of different areas of Spanish littoral was evaluated using an internationally recommended 10 day acute toxicity test with the amphipod Ampelisca brevicornis. Sediment samples from Santander Bay (N Spain), Las Palmas of Gran Canaria (SW Spain), Algeciras Bay (S Spain) and Ría of Huelva (SW Spain) were collected and organic carbon, fines, metals Zn, Cd, Pb, Cu, Ni, Co and Hg, PAHs and PCBs were analyzed for their characterization. Significant toxic effects compared with control site (P<0.05) were observed after exposure to the sediments from Las Palmas of Gran Canaria port, from 83.3% of the sites studied in Algeciras Bay and from Ría of Huelva. These effects were associated (P<0.05) with PCBs and metals Zn, Cd, Pb and Cu in Ría of Huelva and to Ni and Co in the rest of sites. Abstract: We aimed to develop site-specific sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) for two estuarine and port zones in Southeastern Brazil (Santos Estuarine System and Paranaguá Estuarine System) and three in Southern Spain (Ría of Huelva, Bay of Cádiz, and Bay of Algeciras), and compare these values against national and traditionally used international benchmark values. Site-specific SQGs were derived based on sediment physical–chemical, toxicological, and benthic community data integrated through multivariate analysis. This technique allowed the identification of chemicals of concern and the establishment of effects range correlatively to individual concentrations of contaminants for each site of study. The results revealed that sediments from Santos channel, as well as inner portions of the SES, are considered highly polluted (exceeding SQGs-high) by metals, PAHs and PCBs. High pollution by PAHs and some metals was found in São Vicente channel. In PES, sediments from inner portions (proximities of the Ponta do Félix port''s terminal and the Port of Paranaguá) are highly polluted by metals and PAHs, including one zone inside the limits of an environmental protection area. In Gulf of Cádiz, SQGs exceedences were found in Ria of Huelva (all analysed metals and PAHs), in the surroundings of the Port of Cádiz (Bay of Cádiz) (metals), and in Bay of Algeciras (Ni and PAHs). The site-specific SQGs derived in this study are more restricted than national SQGs applied in Brazil and Spain, as well as international guidelines. This finding confirms the importance of the development of site-specific SQGs to support the characterisation of sediments and dredged material. The use of the same methodology to derive SQGs in Brazilian and Spanish port zones confirmed the applicability of this technique with an international scope and provided a harmonised methodology for site-specific SQGs derivation. Unconfined compression and bound-water content tests were conducted to study the effect of humic acid on the mechanical behaviour of solidified dredged material. It is found that the unconfined compressive strength (qu) and the change in bound-water content (Δmbw) exhibit similar relationships with the humic-acid content and curing time. Both parameters decrease with an increase in humic-acid content until reaching a threshold humic-acid content, above which the magnitudes of both parameters reduce to relatively low and steady values. In addition, both qu and Δmbw increase nonlinearly with the curing time. A relationship between qu and Δmbw is presented; Δmbw may reflect the extent of the hydrates developed in the solidified soil which increases nonlinearly with qu. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Acoustic equipment, including interferometric sonar and parametric sub-bottom profiler, have been used to determine the volume and lateral spread of dredged sediments disposed in the natural submarine depression in the Bekkelag Basin, inner Oslofjord since the beginning of the Oslo Harbor remediation project in 2006. This natural depression is used as a subaqueous confined disposal facility (CDF). Calculation of the volume of disposed sediments in the CDF is based on elevation change, derived from two high-resolution bathymetric datasets obtained in 2004, i.e. before the onset of the remediation project, and in April 2008. Seismic profiles across the CDF have been used to estimate the settlement of the original seabed, caused by loading-induced dewatering and compaction of the seabed sediments under the disposed masses. Detailed bathymetry and backscatter data demonstrate the lateral spread of disposed sediments within a well-confined area covering ca. 195,000m2. The sea bottom within this area is distinctly softer than the surrounding seabed as shown by very low acoustic backscatter amplitude, signifying a very loose surface character of the disposed sediments. The thickness of the disposed sediments reaches 6m the deepest part of the original depression. The volume calculation of the disposed sediments in the CDF, based solely on bathymetry data, gives a value of ca. 310,000–320,000m3. Settlement of the original seabed as a result of loading has been estimated to be 30cm at 5m thickness of the disposed sediments. Under the condition that the settlement rate is linearly correlated to the thickness of disposed sediments, the settlement corrected volume of disposed sediments is ca. 330,000–340,000m3. Presented results demonstrate high accuracy and good reproducibility of acoustic seafloor data, and indicate a great potential of such methods as monitoring tools in environmental projects that involve dredging and subaqueous disposal. Abstract: Caged, transplanted, intermoult, female shore crabs (Carcinus maenas) were exposed to sediments from the Port of Cadiz (SW, Spain); the Port of Huelva (SW, Spain), the Port of Pasajes (NE, Spain) and the Port of Bilbao (NW, Spain) for a period of 28days. Organisms were sampled on days 0, 7, 14, 21 and 28 allowing examination of different biomarkers to exposure to metals and organic compounds; metallothioneins (MTs), ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD), glutathione-S-transferase (GST) and glutathione peroxidase (GPX). Sediment samples were also analyzed to determine chemical concentration of metals (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn), PAHs and PCBs. Metals such as As, Cu and Zn associated with mining activities (Port of Huelva), and contaminants such as Ni, Pb, Hg and PCBs, associated with oil spills and industrial activities (Ports of Cadiz, Pasajes and Bilbao), were found to interfere in detoxification and/or anti-stress oxidative defenses in C. maenas. Positive, significant (p <0.05) induction of MTs concentration was associated with increasing sediment As, Cu, Zn and Hg concentrations. EROD activity was associated with PCBs, GST activity with Hg and GPX activity with As, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn. The use of the parameter AR, which involves the kinetic patterns of the battery of biomarkers tested, was found to be a powerful and sensitive tool for evaluating the bioavailability and adverse effects of contaminants bound to sediments, enabling polluted and nonpolluted sites to be easily distinguished. Abstract: We present a method to estimate the spatial distribution of dredged material disposed of at sea. Using both dredged sediments and samples of sea-bed sediment from near the Rame Head disposal site, Plymouth, UK, we applied entropy analysis to the <63μm sediment fraction and combined the results with the trace metal data in the same fraction, to form a series of groups. We interpret the distribution of sediments in one group (F1) to approximate the distribution of material affected by the disposal site. This distribution includes locations close to the disposal site, and also locations <4km to the SE and SW, <6km to the NW and <2km to the N. This approach demonstrates the feasibility of using trace metal analysis of particular grain size fractions to reduce uncertainty in interpreting the spatial distribution of impacts of dredge disposal. A monitoring survey was conducted in July 2005 at the Rhode Island Sound Disposal Site (RISDS) as part of the Disposal Area Monitoring System (DAMOS) program. The survey included the collection of sediment-profile and plan-view images, and benthic biology grabs. Each of these techniques provides a different, yet complementary perspective on benthic community conditions. These complementary techniques aided in the assessment of the benthic recovery process within RISDS following the placement of dredged material from the Providence River and Harbor Maintenance Dredging Project (PRHMDP). Based on observed patterns of physical, chemical, and biological responses of seafloor environments to dredged material disposal activity it was expected that the benthic community within RISDS would be in an intermediate phase of recolonization (Stage II). Results of the 2005 RISDS survey indicated that in the six months since disposal activities at RISDS had concluded, the biological community at RISDS was recovering relatively rapidly and Stages II and III infauna were present throughout the region. This paper summarises the performance of simple multivariate exploratory analyses to investigate on their potential application for dredged material characterization and management. The data from 25 sampling stations located at 7 different Spanish ports, produced a matrix consisting of 300 observations on 10 variables: the metals Cd, Cu, Cr, Hg, Ni, Pb and Zn, the metalloid As, the sum of PAHs and PCB congeners, and the proportion of fines and organic matter content. The cluster analysis was suitable to separate the sediments according to the extent of contamination while the PCA indicated that the data was defined by two principal factors: a first one that accounts for 56.4% of the total variance, describing the metallic contaminants except Ni and Cr, and a second one that accounts for 14.4% of the total variance describing the organic contaminants PAHs and PCBs. The use of these two simple and untutored multivariate techniques seems a cost-effective approach for future pre-dredging investigations in the studied areas providing useful information for dredged material characterization and management with little additional effort. Artificial sediment enhancement using a thin layer of dredged material has been suggested as a means to increase elevation and create soil conditions conducive to increased marsh structure and function in deteriorating marshes. Using a chronosequence approach, we examined the effects of sediment enhancement in deteriorating marsh and open-water pond habitats located in six brackish marshes. Sediment enhancement of both marsh and interior pond sites had significant, immediate, and long-lasting effects on physical soil properties and nutrient status with increased bulk density and inorganic nitrogen. Vegetative cover and productivity response were minimal for deteriorating vegetated marshes with the short- term response data showing no significant impact of sediment enhancement and long-term trends indicating decreasing productivity over time. In contrast, trajectory models of vegetative cover and productivity in interior pond sites showed increases over time indicating that, for restoration of interior ponds, sediment enhancement may prove valuable. The effect of salinity on the concentration of metals in Spartina alterniflora tissues and excreted salts and the distribution of metals between these compartments was tested in a greenhouse experiment. S. alterniflora stems were planted in pots of dredge sediment that was amended with a suite of six metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb, and Zn). The overlying water of individual pots was maintained at treatment salinities of 0, 15, or 30 practical salinity units. The proportion of total metal distributed to the tissues and excreted salt of S. alterniflora was not significantly influenced by salinity for any of the metals. The concentration of Pb in root and leaf tissues and in excreted salt was influenced by salinity, as was the concentration of Zn in root tissue and excreted salt. Contrary to expectations, the concentration of Pb and Zn in excreted salts decreased as salinity increased. Although the influence of salinity on the concentration of Pb and Zn in S. alterniflora tissue has not been previously reported, the influence of salinity on the tissue concentrations of Pb agrees with previous research on dicots. Recent research efforts in sediment and dredged material assessment research have focused on the inclusion of sublethal endpoints (biomarkers) in acute and long-term bioassays for dredged material characterisation and management. The incorporation of biomarkers as a new line of evidence in a weight of evidence approach allows the determination of more sensitive, longer-term biological information for use in laboratory and in situ sediment/tissue quality guidelines. Remediation and management of contaminated sediments and dredged material is often difficult due to the complex mixtures of chemical substances that usually impact the sediments. The selection of the best option that leads to the sustainable management of the sediments of a site is not an easy task, and it should be based on the integration of technical, economic, social and environmental criteria. In this paper, an overview of the main alternatives for the management of contaminated sediments and dredged material is presented. This work highlights the wide variety of techniques and treatments that can be applied, including no action (i.e. monitored natural recovery), in-situ capping, in-situ treatments, ex-situ treatments or confined disposal. The utilisation of contaminated dredged material for a beneficial use, directly or after treatment, should be considered as its preferred final destination. Therefore, special emphasis has been given in this study to the presentation of possible beneficial uses of dredged material. The results of our research group, which are summarised in this paper, about the use of contaminated sediments as alternative raw materials in the manufacture of traditional clay-based ceramics, can serve as an example of beneficial uses that lead to marketable products. This article discusses a study which assessed the sediment quality of the Guadalete Estuary sediments in Spain. The study carried out the purpose by means of an in situ seven day toxicity test and the determination of sublethal responses including a battery of enzymatic biomarkers using the polychaete Arenicola marina. It found that the presence of chemicals leads to gluthation-S-traesferase (GST) induction in and presumably in consequence, to lipid peroxidation (LPO) inhibition. It also showed that GST activity resulted to be the main protection mechanism against oxidative stress in Arenicola marina.

Harbor sediments containing large deposits of organotin compounds constitute a potential threat to the marine environment. Samples of harbor sediments were collected twice in the years 2003 and 2005 from the following locations: Ziółkowskiego, Siarkowe, Wiślane, Węglowe, Chemików and Paliw Płynnych Quays. The cores of 25cm length sliced into 2- and 5-cm segments were analyzed. After drying and homogenization, samples were split into two granulometric fractions, i.e. <2.00 and <0.063mm. The dominant fraction in whole sediment, i.e. fraction grain diameter <2.00mm, was sand (grain diameter 2.00–0.063mm). However, the highest concentrations of butyltin (BT) and phenyltin (PT) compounds were found in the fine sediment fraction. The mean values of tributyltin (TBT), dibutyltin (DBT) and monobutyltin (MBT) in the analyzed samples in the <2.00mm fraction were 2144.9, 434.7 and 148.1ngSng−1 d.w., respectively, while the corresponding mean values in the <0.063mm fraction were 6556.4, 1593.7 and 450.0ngSng−1 d.w. The mean concentrations of monophenyltin (MPhT) have been estimated at 29.0 and 49.9ngSng−1 d.w. for the <2.00 and <0.063mm fraction sizes, respectively. The estimated content levels of diphenyltin (DPhT) and triphenyltin (TPhT) were in most cases below the detection limit of the applied method. The sediment cores collected from the locations characterized by high industrialization and intense exploitation (Wiślane, Węglowe Quays) contained the highest concentrations of BT and PT. Organotin compounds are widely used in almost all sectors of industry. Antifouling paints, which were applied to ship hulls to protect from fouling organisms, are the main source of TBT and TPhT derivatives loaded into the sea. The global ban on the use of these compounds in antifouling systems was introduced by the IMO in 2001. However, the ban did not solve the problem of the use of alternatives to TBT in the ship industry. Moreover, the issue of storing the organotins-containing dredged spoils at sea still remains unresolved. The pollution load deposited in port sediments may become an additional threat to the organisms that dwell in a given water basin. In such cases, it is necessary to establish appropriate norms for the quality classification of dredged spoils. Abstract: The degree of contamination and toxicity in sediment from four Spanish ports (Cádiz, Huelva, Pasajes and Bilbao) was assessed in the present study. Two marine invertebrate species, the shore crab Carcinus maenas and the clam Ruditapes philippinarum, were exposed to the different sediments under laboratory conditions for 28days. Relationships were developed among metal contamination (As, Cd, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn) in sediments, metal accumulation in gill tissues and histopathological lesions in different biological tissues to assess sediment toxicity. A multivariate analysis approach was used to calculate sediment quality guidelines (SQGs) by linking metal concentration in sediments with histopathological lesions measured in the exposed organisms. The results showed significant contaminant accumulation and histopathological lesions due to As, Pb and Zn in sediments at the port of Huelva; As, Cr, Cu, Hg and Ni at the ports of Pasajes and Cádiz; and Cr and Hg at the port of Bilbao. The link between chemical concentration in sediments and histopathological lesions allowed the determination of SQGs for the chemicals As, Cd, Cu, Cr, Hg, Ni and Zn. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Environment Canada's Disposal at Sea Programme hosted the Contaminated Dredged Material Management Decisions Workshop in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, on 28-30 November 2006. The workshop brought together over 50 sediment assessment and management experts from academic, industrial, and regulatory backgrounds and charged them with drafting a potential framework to assess contaminated dredged materials and compare the risks of various disposal alternatives. This article summarizes the recommendations made during the workshop concerning the development of sediment assessment tools, the interpretation of these tools, and the essential attributes of a comparative risk assessment process. The major outcomes of the workshop include a strong recommendation to develop a national dredging or sediment management strategy, a potential decision-making framework for the assessment of dredged materials and comparative risk assessment of disposal options, and the expansion of minimum sediment characterization requirements for nonroutine disposal permit applications. Abstract: Two marine invertebrates, the crab Carcinus maenas and the clam Ruditapes philippinarum, were used as bioindicator species to assess contamination when exposed in situ to sediment from different sites from four Spanish ports Cadiz (SW Spain), Huelva (SW Spain), Bilbao (NE Spain) and Pasajes (NE Spain). In an attempt to determine sediments toxicity, a combination of exposure biomarkers was analyzed in both species: metallothionein-like-proteins (MTLPs), ethoxyresorufin O-deethylase (EROD), glutathione S-transferase activity (GST), glutathione peroxidase (GPX) and glutathione reductase (GR). In parallel, physical and chemical characterization of the different sediments was performed and biological responses related to the contaminants. Significant induction of MTLPs was observed when organisms were exposed to metal contaminated sediments (port of Huelva), and EROD and GPX activities after exposure to sediments containing organic compounds (port of Bilbao and Pasajes). At 460 hectares, the Paul Sarbanes Environmental Restoration Project at Poplar Island, Talbot County, Maryland, represents the largest "beneficial use" dredged material project of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (a cooperative project with Maryland Port Administration). Begun in 1998, the 15-year restoration project will ultimately consist of roughly 220 ha of uplands and 220 ha of tidal wetland habitats, with limited areas of dike roads, perimeter riprap, and unvegetated mudflats. Wetland restoration began in one small section (or "cell") in 2002, but not all cells will be filled with dredged material until at least 2013. As a major objective of the restoration, six species of waterbirds were identified as "priority species" for Chesapeake Bay: American black duck (Anas rubripes), snowy egret (Egretta thula), cattle egret (Bubulcusibis), osprey (Pandion haliaetus), common tern (Sterna hirundo), and least tern (S. antillarum). Monitoring of nesting activities of these species from 2002 to 2005 indicated that all species except black ducks colonized the site rapidly. More than 800 pairs of common terns nested in 2003 to 2004. Because of predation by red fox (Vulpes vulpes) and great horned owl (Bubo virginianus), reproductive success was very low for the terns. Trapping was effective in removing the foxes, and other controls have been applied to opportunistic nesting species including herring gulls (Larus argentatus) and Canada geese (Branta canadensis). Capping has received considerable attention as a method to reduce contaminant transport from contaminated sediments and sub-aqueous disposed dredged materials. Consolidation of dredged material after capping can result in a substantial advection of pore water, into or through the capping layer. The effect of two different capping materials (crushed limestone and gneiss) on the transport of heavy metals and phosphorus during consolidation was studied with a novel experimental design. Capped dredged material was placed in a consolidation cell and pore water expelled during the consolidation was collected for chemical analysis. To support interpretation of the results from this test, interactions between the capping material and the dredged material were also studied in batch tests. The study revealed large differences in the capping efficiency (CE) between the two materials. Both materials were efficient caps for Fe and P (CE>99% with 2cm cap), while limestone also was efficient for Mn (CE>92% with 2cm cap). Contrary to what was expected, capping of dredged material with crushed gneiss increased the release of Ca, Mn, Co, Ni, Cd, and Cu, resulting in negative CE. The batch tests showed that leaching from the crushed gneiss was the source of the observed release of metals. The results also show that the high concentrations of heavy metals in the dredged material were immobilised, probably by sulphides. Protection against re-suspension and oxidation will therefore in many cases be the most important effect of the cap. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Sediment quality assessments for regulatory purposes (i.e. dredged material disposal) are characterized by linking chemical and acute ecotoxicological data. The design of chronic bioassays that incorporate more sensible endpoints than acute tests is discussed to address sediment quality for environmental quality assessment and regulatory proposes. The chronic tests use juveniles of commercial species of fish Sparus aurata and Solea senegalensis, to assess sediment toxicity in samples collected along different littoral areas in the North and the South of Spain. The organisms were exposed during 60 days and sublethal endpoints were selected including biomarkers of exposure to metals (metallothioneins — MTs) and to organic contaminants (ethoxyresorufin-O-deethylase activity — EROD activity) and biomarkers of effect (histopathology in different tissues, gill and liver). A Multivariate Analysis Approach was conducted in order to associate these biological responses with sediment metal concentration from the ports and with chemical residues in biological tissues exposed to sediments under laboratory conditions. Abstract: The disposal of contaminated dredged material has become an economical and environmental issue. Firstly, this study presents the Novosol® process which was used for the treatment of polluted sediments. This process is based on the stabilisation of heavy metals and on the thermal elimination of organic matter. A physical characterization of the processed material reveals high porosity (60%) and water absorption (45%). Moreover, the treated sediment aggregate (TSA) has a relatively low strength and a high content of fine particles. Secondly, an experimental study on the feasibility of TSA introduction in cement-based materials was performed. Three mortars for which a given sand volume was replaced by the same sediment volume (33%, 66% and 100%) were designed. A strong increase of drying shrinkage was observed (up to 10 times higher, when compared to a reference mortar). Permeability remained virtually constant, though. There was a significant increase in strength for low to moderate substitution, while high incorporated quantity of sediment led to a strength on the same order of that of the reference mortar. Abstract: In recent years, dredged material has become regarded as a potential resource and used to create and/or improve intertidal habitats (i.e., beneficial use). This paper presents the results of a sampling programme to investigate the long-term (42months post-recharge) macro- and meiofaunal recolonisation processes of a beneficial use scheme in south-east England. While univariate indices of community structure indicated that the scheme’s meiofaunal community was never significantly different from that of a nearby reference area, such attributes for macrofauna were continually significantly below those of the reference area, although this was not the case for all reference stations. Multivariate analyses revealed that macro- and meiofaunal community structures were always significantly different from those of the reference communities. We discuss the factors responsible for these observations and propose that assessing recovery of a beneficial use scheme should be undertaken using pre-defined criteria in addition to comparisons with a reference site. Since the 1997 local ban on ocean dumping of dredged sediments, the States of New York and New Jersey have pursued a policy of environmentally sound solutions to the management of dredged material, including beneficial use of stabilized dredged material (SDM) in transportation applications. A pilot study was initiated in 1998 to evaluate the use of SDM in the construction of highway embankments. Utilizing 80,000 cubic yards of dredged material, two embankments were constructed from SDM on a commercial development area adjacent to the Harbor. Geotechnical properties and handling of SDM were evaluated both during and one year post - construction. This article presents the evaluation of the embankments themselves, including constructability and performance. The results demonstrate that SDM satisfies most of the geotechnical criteria for fill construction, except those for durability, requiring proper coverage and protection similar to that provided for fills constructed on cohesive soils. This same characteristic precludes long term stockpiling of SDM prior to final placement, limiting applications to those that have schedules overlapping with dredging projects. Increased costs for the use of SDM can be as high as $8 per cubic yard over traditional fills; however, this cost may be recouped through management fees collected from dredging projects. The use of fine-grained maintenance dredged material for habitat enhancement has increased in recent years, particularly recharge schemes which provide a means of combating the erosion of intertidal flats and saltmarsh. This article investigates the development of meiofaunal nematode communities following a natural experiment in 2003, when fine-grained dredged material was deposited concurrently at four adjacent intertidal recharge sites on the southeast coast of the United Kingdom. A 12-month survey of nematode assemblages was carried out to compare univariate, multivariate, allometric and functional attributes of colonist communities in relation to the different environmental conditions prevailing at the four sites. Developing assemblages were increasingly affected by the spatial differences in the elevation, consolidation and exposure of bed material. The results indicated that the colonisation sequence was the result of random settling of suspended nematodes, sequential reproduction and differential survival and reproductive success of colonising species. For the first time, this experiment provided insights into the development of adaptive and functional types of meiofaunal nematodes following the intertidal deposition of uncontaminated fine-grained dredged material. This, in turn, will contribute considerably to the development of ecological models of the evolution of the large-scale placement of muddy dredged material in the intertidal environment. Background. Under anoxic conditions typically prevailing in disposal sites for dredged sediment, methanogenesis is the terminal step during microbial degradation of sediment organic matter. Sediment gas production may pose several problems to site management and post-closure utilisation. Depending on the magnitude of gas/methane formation and the intended utilisation of the site, countermeasures will have to be effected during and after deposition of the dredged material. For this purpose it may be of interest to pre-estimate the extent of gas formation from simple sediment variables. Therefore, the aim of the investigations presented here was to analyse the interrelations between gas formation and sediment physical, chemical and biological qualities. Methods. Freshly sampled riverbed sediment from nine German federal waterways was analysed for standard solid physical and chemical parameters, pore water composition, cell counts of methanogenic and sulfate-reducing bacteria, and gas formation over a period of 500 days. Particle size and density fractionation were carried out in order to characterise organic matter quality. Correlations between methane formation and sediment chemical, physical and microbiological characteristics were tested using linear and multiple correlation analysis. Results and Discussion. The selected sediments, including two with marine influence, differed strongly regarding texture, chemical parameters, pore water composition, and methanogen cell counts. The course of methane formation was found to follow distinct phases. The commencement of methane formation was preceded by a lag phase of variable duration. The lag phase was followed by a strong increase of the methane formation rate up to a sediment-characteristic maximum of 5–30 nmol CH4 h-1 g dw-1. Eventually, the rate of methane formation decreased and reached a more stable, long-term level. The extent and amplitude of each phase varied strongly between sediments and could be correlated well with only a few standard analytical parameters, despite the strong heterogeneity of sediment with respect to chemical, physical, and biological characteristics. Lag phase duration depended strongly on the content of inorganic electron acceptors and also on the number of methanogens present at the beginning of the experiment. Maximum and steady state methanogenesis were mainly determined by sediment total nitrogen. As analysis of sediment density fractions revealed that total nitrogen reflected the share of readily degradable macroorganic matter. Conclusion and Outlook. The results imply that the observed methane formation is a function of the temporally changing balance of the availability of electron acceptors and H2, and the share of easily degradable organic matter. For fresh riverbed sediments, the latter may be deduced from total nitrogen content. Overall, the results showed that methane formation by freshly dredged material may well be pre-estimated from standard analytical data within the first few years of deposition. However, the differently degradable organic matter pools will change over time with respect to size, chemical nature and association with the sediment mineral phase. It can thus be expected that the correlations found in this study will not be readily transferable to older materials. Further studies on the gas formation and organic matter quality by older sediments, e.g. from older dredged material disposal sites of known age, should be conducted and results should be combined with existing organic matter degradation models in order to improve the prediction of sediment gas formation over time. Several species of bivalves and procedures have been used to characterize sediment toxicity. Here we report the results of an interlaboratory exercise that included three different laboratories to evaluate the use of the bioassay using the commercial clam Ruditapes philippinarum. Six different dredged sediments were studied using two different endpoints: lethality after two different exposure periods (7 and 14 days) and burrowing activity after 48 h of exposure. The lethal endpoint was only sensitive to characterize samples with high metallic concentration and following the 14-day exposure period. The burrowing activity showed very variable results that evidence the unsuitability of this endpoint for dredged material characterization. According to these results, a new design is recommended for the test using juvenile bivalves if it is to be used to characterize sediment samples on a regulatory context especially if sediments are not affected by metallic contamination. Interlaboratory variability was studied for the bioassay using crustacean amphipods. Nine series of data were obtained from different laboratories using four different species (Ampelisca brevicornis, Corophium volutator, Corophium multisetosum and Microdeutopus gryllotalpa), all previously used for sediment toxicity assessment in Spain. Results were studied for interlaboratory variability and according to different confounding factors. The coefficients of variation were similar to those previously reported for this bioassay and sample classification was homogeneous among the laboratories that succesfully completed the exercise. No significant tendencies related to test species were identified and it seems that the factor most critically affecting test results and the classification of samples is storage time before testing. The present paper reports the results of an interlaboratory variability study of a bioassay using larval stages of the marine sea urchin Paracentrotus lividus. This exercise was developed in two different phases and included four laboratories, each of which determined the toxicity of six sediment samples. The samples were collected from different Spanish ports and were characterized by exposing sea urchin embryos for 48 h to sediment elutriates. Phase I was used to redesign test parameters and to avoid possible interfering factors when interpreting test results. Laboratories were more homogeneous in the classification of sediments according to the toxic responses in Phase II despite the high variability of the elutriate testing protocols. Based on our results, the test seems suitable to characterize dredged material, the interlaboratory variability being similar to that found for other bioassays in previous studies. The results of an interlaboratory assessment made to evaluate the use of different bioassays for sediment quality characterization for a regulatory purpose are presented. The objective of the study was to determine the main differences among sediment bioassays conducted at different laboratories and to evaluate how this can influence dredged material management. The exercise consisted of two parts. During Phase I, six dredged sediment samples from different Spanish ports (Barcelona, Bilbao, Cádiz, Cartagena and Huelva) were distributed to different laboratories where they were applied a screening test for initial toxicity evaluation, a test for elutriates and two solid-phase bioassays. In Phase II, six new sediment samples (from the ports of Algeciras, Bilbao, Cádiz and Huelva) were tested to re-evaluate some bioassays for which different interfering factors were identified during the first phase. The chemical characterization results for Phase I showed high concentrations of some compounds in all the samples except one, which could be considered uncontaminated, while those for Phase II showed high concentrations in most sediments of some metallic compounds, mainly Cu, Hg and As, and to a lesser extent Cd, and of the total polychlorinated biphenyl congeners analyzed. According to Spanish guidelines for dredged material management, only one of the six samples assessed in each phase of the exercise would be suitable for open water disposal. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Dredged material levees in coastal Louisiana are normally associated with pipeline canals or, more frequently, canals dredged through the wetlands to allow access to drilling locations for mineral extraction. The hydrologic impact on marshes behind the levee is of concern to coastal resource managers because of the potential impact on sediment transport and deposition, and the effect on estuarine organism access to valuable nursery habitat. This study examined the effects of gaps in dredged material levees, compared to continuous levees and natural channel banks, on these two aspects of marsh function. Field studies for sediment deposition were conducted biweekly for a year, and nekton samples were collected in spring and fall. Variation in nekton density among study arears and landscape types was great in part because of the inherent sampling gear issues and in part because of differences in characteristics among areas. Nekton densities were generally greater in natural compared to leveed and gapped landscapes. Differences in landscape type did not explain patterns in sediment deposition. The gaps examined appear to be too restrictive of marsh flooding to provide efficient movements of floodwaters onto the marsh during moderate flooding events. The “trapping” effect of the levees increases sediment deposition during extreme events. Gapping material levees may be an effective method of partially restoring upper marsh connection to nekton, but this method may work best in lower elevation marshes where nekton use is greater. Abstract: This study provides a holistic perspective on the ecological effects of dredged material disposal, both intertidally and subtidally. A number of numerical techniques (univariate, distributional, multivariate and meta-analysis) were used to assess impacts at 18 different disposal sites. The analyses revealed that ecological effects associated with dredged material disposal were dependent on the numerical techniques used, and that impacts were disposal-site specific. Disposal-site communities were generally faunistically impoverished to varying degrees, and impacts following intertidal placement were comparable to those of subtidal placement. We conclude that any assessment of the consequences of dredged material disposal to the coastal environment must take account of site-specific variation in prevailing hydrographic regimes and in ecological status, along with information on the disposal activity itself (mode, timing, quantity, frequency and type of material). As would be expected, variability in the latter presents a significant challenge in attempts to generalise about environmental and ecological impacts. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Port authorities worldwide are confronted with a continuous stream of dredged sediment that needs to be disposed. One of the solutions being considered for the Port of Antwerp (Belgium) is the beneficial use of constructing landscape dikes with dredged material. This paper examines whether spontaneous development, whether or not combined with mowing or sowing, is a valuable alternative to afforestation for revalorizing brackish sediment dikes. Early vegetation succession was followed on an experimental dike along the river Scheldt. The pioneer vegetation was closely related to flood-mark communities of the Atriplicetum littoralis. The most important abiotic variables for determining consecutive development were the salt gradient originating along the topographic gradient, and the mowing management. When halophytic pioneer species have disappeared, the successional pathways on dredged-sediment dikes are very similar to those described for other hyper-eutrophicated soils, such as abandoned arable fields. Zero-management results in species-poor Urtica–Elymus stands. Mowing and cut removal leads to ruderal grassland related to the Artemisietea. Grass species need to be sown to obtain target communities of the Arrhenatherion. The consequences of these findings for the construction, design and management of future landscape dikes are discussed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: Electrodialytic removal of heavy metals from different harbour sediments was investigated. Electrodialytic remediation experiments in laboratory scale were made with calcareous and non-calcareous harbour sediments. Two different experimental set-ups were used for the study, one with stirring of the sediment slurry, the other without stirring. The removal of heavy metals was highest in the non-calcareous sediment, where 94% Cd, 91% Zn and 73% Cu were removed after 24 days. The highest removal obtained for the calcareous sediment was 81% Cd, 76% Zn, 75% Pb and 53% Cu after 21 days, with stirred sediment slurry. Electrodialytic experiments without stirring of calcareous sediment gave high removals (84% Zn, 58% Pb and 48% Cu), but there were problems with precipitations in the sediment, which limited the removal. The stirred experiments gave the highest removals of heavy metals and the voltage was the most stable in these experiments, and thus, the stirred set-up is the best choice for experimental set-up. The order in which the heavy metals were removed from the harbour sediments was Cd>Zn>Pb>Cu. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: In recent years, dredged material has become regarded as a potential resource and used to create and/or improve intertidal habitats (‘beneficial use’ schemes). This paper presents the results of a sampling programme to investigate the short-term macrofaunal recovery of three beneficial use schemes in south-east England in terms of species and functional diversity. Environmental parameters (sediment redox potential, and water, organic carbon and silt/clay contents) and univariate community attributes (total individuals and species, diversity, evenness and biomass) at the recharge sites had attained reference levels at two schemes while assemblages differed significantly in terms of species composition at all three schemes. While trophic group proportionality had re-established at one scheme, an increased grazer dominance was apparent at another while the proportion of sub-surface deposit feeders decreased at the third. Total individuals and species number of the developing communities were negatively correlated with sediment redox potential at 4cm and % silt/clay, respectively. The implications of these results for monitoring the recovery of future fine-grained beneficial use schemes are discussed. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Data from the Elbe River and its tributaries indicate, despite extensive improvement in water quality during the last 15 years, that the respective sediment situation of many priority pollutants has not reached an acceptable level. For the coming decades, risks for downstream sites and stakeholders will persist, mainly due to secondary sources originating from historical pollution of soils and sediments in the catchment area. In practice, a catchment-wide assessment of historical contaminated soil and sediment should apply a three-step approach: (i) Identification of substances of concern (s.o.c.) and their classification into ’hazard classes of compounds’; (ii) identification of areas of concern (a.o.c.) and their classification into ‘hazard classes of sites’; (iii) identification of areas of risk (a.o.r.) and their assessment relative to each other with regard to the probability of polluting the sediments in the downstream reaches. The conversion of this concept has to consider the underlying philosophy of the EU Water Framework Directive, particularly with respect to the analysis and monitoring of priority substances in solid matrices. However, major deficiencies are still in the assessment and prognosis of resuspension processes, and potential approaches to fill this gap are described both in theory and from examples of the Elbe River. The sediment stability testing facilities consist of a unique triple set developed by innovative experimental laboratory and field research. The instrumental facilities consisting of a tube corer and a pressurized channel allow one to measure not only the onset of erosion (critical bed shear stress), but also the erosion rate for different sediment layers. Undisturbed sediment samples were taken from contaminated sites, e.g. in near-bank groyne fields and floodplains, using (i) core sampler (diameter 14 cm, length 150 cm) for sediment erodibility depth profiling and (ii) box sampler (30*70 cm2 top view area, 28 cm depth) for comparing and upscaling the results from the laboratory to the field. Sediment properties such as grain size spectrum (laser beam attenuation), water and gas content were analyzed by a non-intrusive, high frequency, capacity measurement method and bulk density by γ-ray. Sediment core samples from flooded areas in the Middle Elbe indicate, that, except from the uppermost 5 cm and at a depth of from 47 to 48 cm, where the critical shear stress is very low (0.5 Pa), the critical bottom shear stress is between 1.2 Pa and 3.4 Pa, i.e. at a moderate level. Major reasons for the distinct heterogeneity of the erosion stability are differences in consolidation processes, grain size distribution and in the composition of stabilizing exudates in the individual sediment layers. Similar to the erosion stability depth profile, the metal data exhibit short-range heterogeneities; the variations in the individual layers can be explained by different proportions of fine grained components and by an improvement of suspended matter quality in the course of time. A comparison of the metal contents of embanked alluvial soils and unembanked alluvial areas suggests the following causal chain: Recent floodplain areas at low mean water levels exhibiting high concentrations of organic carbon represent the most highly contaminated sites. On the other hand, insignificant pollution has occurred on alluvial areas, which were embanked already at pre-industrial times. The traditional approach to assessing sediment quality involves chemical analysis. However, this is not sufficient to ensure safe disposal of dredged material or to determine the impact on biota of sediment contamination. The toxic effect on flora and fauna is related to the bioavailability of contaminants. Because of the potential transfer of contaminants along food chains, not only the local habitat can be affected, but also organisms at higher trophic levels. The consumption of seafood may lead to adverse effects on human health.Biomarkers are useful tools as early warnings to determine exposure to contaminants and the effect of contaminants on organisms before the damage becomes irreversible. They may link the bioavailability of compounds with their concentrations at target organs and intrinsic toxicity. Nevertheless, other confounding factors must be taken into account when the results are interpreted.We review different biomarkers used to determine the quality of marine sediment and dredged material. Also, we consider evaluation of the use of biomarkers in environmental risk assessment (ERA) and links between laboratory and field surveys. We integrate available information to determine the validity of the different biomarkers, their relevance for assessing contaminated sediments and the suitability of the methodology. Thirty-five years of research in New England indicates that ocean disposal of dredged material has minimal environmental impacts when carefully managed. This paper summarizes research efforts and resulting conclusions by the US Army Corps of Engineers, New England District, beginning with the Scientific Report Series and continuing with the Disposal Area Monitoring System (DAMOS). Using a tiered approach to monitoring and a wide range of tools, the DAMOS program has monitored short- and long-term physical and biological effects of disposal at designated disposal sites throughout New England waters. The DAMOS program has also helped develop new techniques for safe ocean disposal of contaminated sediments, including capping and confined aquatic disposal (CAD) cells. Monitoring conducted at many sites in New England and around the world has shown that impacts are typically near-field and short-term. Findings such as these need to be disseminated to the general public, whose perception of dredged material disposal is generally negative and is not strongly rooted in current science. This article reviews the status of comparative risk assessment within the context of environmental decision-making; evaluates its potential application as a decision- making framework for selecting alternative technologies for dredged material management; and makes recommendations for implementing such a framework. One of the most important points from this review for decision-making is that comparative risk assessment, however conducted, is an inherently subjective, value-laden process. There is some objection to this lack of total scientific objectivity ("hard version" of comparative risk assessment). However, the "hard versions" provide little help in suggesting a method that surmounts the psychology of choice in decision-making schemes. The application of comparative risk assessment in the decision-making process at dredged material management facilities will have an element of value and professional judgment in the process. The literature suggests that the best way to incorporate this subjectivity and still maintain a defensible comparative frame- work is to develop a method that is logically consistent and allows for uncertainty by comparing risks on the basis of more than one set of criteria, more than one set of categories, and more than one set of experts. Hundreds of millions of cubic meters of contaminated sediments are dredged from US harbors and waterways annually for maintenance of navigation, environmental remediation, or both. In recent years, inexpensive ocean dumping has been largely eliminated as a disposal alternative causing a crisis in the management of sediment. This paper presents a new beneficial use alternative for contaminated dredged material, which is to use dredged material as a feedstock in the conventional manufacture of Portland cement. The paper demonstrates the efficacy of the process at the bench and pilot scales, and presents a summary of practical and economic considerations. A bench scale manufacture was carried out with feedstock mixtures containing 1–12% dredged material from the New York/New Jersey (NY/NJ) harbor. The clinkers were quantitatively analyzed with X-ray powder diffraction and differences in phase concentrations were observed in the clinker samples manufactured with dredged material (decreased alite and increased belite) suggesting that additional burn time was needed to account for the quartz present in the sediments. The free chloride concentrations in the clinker samples were below ACI limits for cement used with reinforcing steel; however, the chloride in the dredged material remains a manufacturing concern and is expected to increase annual maintenance costs. A pilot scale manufacture was carried out in a batch rotary kiln; X-ray diffraction analysis and ASTM tests for strength, soundness, and setting time suggested that with better optimized burning conditions, dredged material can be successfully incorporated into full scale manufacture. In order to assess heavy metal mobility in dredged harbour sediments, six superficial sediment samples covering a range of pollution levels and environments were collected in Barcelona Harbour. Samples were characterised in terms of major compounds (Al, Ca, Fe, Mn, Si, Ti, Mg, K and Na); total C, N and S contents; organic matter; and water content. Pseudo-total trace metal contents were assessed after aqua regia digestion (ISO 11466:1995). The modified BCR three-step sequential extraction procedure (BCR-SEP) was applied, and both major compounds (Al, Ca, Fe and Mn) and trace metals (Cd, Cr, Cu, Ni, Pb and Zn) were determined in the different extracts. Both the pseudo-total digestion method and the BCR-SEP were validated using two sediment certified materials from lakes (BCR CRM 701 and BCR CRM 601). The highest metal concentrations were observed in one of the sampling points which receives an urban discharge. The observed mobility order (percentage of metal extracted in the first step) of the six trace metals studied was Cd>Zn>Pb>Cu>Ni>Cr. The good agreement observed with the results obtained as the sum of the four steps (extractable+residue) and the pseudo-total content shows that laboratory working conditions were under control. Characteristic dynamic features of sediment-related processes in rivers include dramatic effects of stormwater events on particle transport, rapid and far-reaching effects of sulphide oxidation during resuspension, and biological accumulation and potential release of toxic chemicals. Pollutant mobility is the net result of the stabilizing and mobilizing effects in both hydraulic and chemical fields. In practice, emphasis has to be given to fine-grained sediments and suspended matter as these materials exhibit large surface areas and high sorption capacities. Organic materials are highly reactive. Degradation of organic matter will induce oxygen depletion and might enhance formation of flocs and biofilms. Study of variations of sediment and water chemistry should predominantly include changes of pH and redox conditions, competition of dissolved ions and processes such as complexation by organic substances. Major questions relate to the potential reduction of sorption sites on minerals and degradation of organic carrier materials. All these processes will influence solution/solid equilibrium conditions and have to be studied prior to modelling the overall effects of pollutants on the water body and aquatic ecosystems. With respect to handling and remediation of contaminated river sediments, either in-place or excavated, a chemical and biological characterization of the material, of the (disposal) site and of the long-term processes is crucial. Passive techniques (e.g. in situ stabilization, subaqueous capping) provide economic advantages as there are no operation costs following their installation. The disposal of maintenance dredged material constitutes one of the most important problems in coastal zone management. To minimise ecological impacts, a number of 'beneficial use' options have developed whereby the material is regarded as a potential resource and used to recharge or recreate intertidal habitats. This paper presents the results of a sampling programme to investigate the macrofaunal recovery rates, and the underlying mechanisms responsible for them, following a beneficial use scheme involving the placement of fine-grained dredged material on a salt marsh in southeast England. Three stations in the recharge area and three reference stations,located within the same salt marsh system, were selected. These stations were sampled prior to recharge (recharge stations only) then 1 week, 3, 6, 12 and 18 months after the recharge. Sediment redox potentials (1, 2 and 4 cm sediment depths) were also measured on each sampling occasion. The results indicated a rapid recolonization of the fauna typical of the surrounding salt marsh channels. All univariate parameters had recovered after 3 months after the recharge. Active post-juvenile immigration is likely to have been the predominant recovery process. Multivariate data analysis revealed that the community structure of the recharge stations, however, did not progress towards those of the reference sites. Natural spatial variability in community structure at the scale of the recharge-reference station distance, and differences in eventual tidal elevations are factors responsible for these differences. The need to carefully assess reference site suitability in monitoring beneficial use schemes is discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
