Abstract

The A(Q^2) structure function in elastic electron-deuteron scattering was measured at six momentum transfers Q^2 between 0.66 and 1.80 (GeV/c)^2 in Hall C at Jefferson Laboratory. The scattered electrons and recoil deuterons were detected in coincidence, at a fixed deuteron angle of 60.5 degrees. These new precise measurements resolve discrepancies between older sets of data. They put significant constraints on existing models of the deuteron electromagnetic structure, and on the strength of isoscalar meson exchange currents., Comment: 3 LaTeX pages plus 2 PS figures

Abstract

The first measurements of f(LT)’ known as the fifth response function, have been made for the H-2((e) over right arrow, e’p) and C-12((3) over right arrow, e’p) reactions. This response is directly related to the imaginary part of the interference between the transverse and longitudinal nuclear electromagnetic currents. Its observation requires longitudinally polarized electron beams and out-of-plane detection, the latter made possible by the newly developed out-of-plane spectrometer system. The initial measurements were made by using a 560-MeV polarized electron beam and quasielastic kinematics at Q(2) = 3.3 fm(-2). The development of the methodology for out-of-plane physics, and the analysis of the data from the initial experiments are described in detail. The measured fifth response and the related asymmetry in the coincidence cross section are in agreement, albeit with large statistical errors, with the theoretical predictions. Abstract

We present a measurement of the induced proton polarization P-n in pi(0) electroproduction on the proton around the Delta resonance. The measurement was made at a central invariant mass and a squared four-momentum transfer of W=1231 MeV and Q(2)=0.126 GeV2/c(2), respectively. We measured a large induced polarization, P-n = -0.397 +/- 0.055 +/- 0.009. The data suggest that the scalar background is larger than expected from a recent effective Hamiltonian model. Abstract

In the midst of rapidly proliferating engagement efforts around climate adaptation, attention to the design and evaluation of decision support processes and products is warranted. We report on the development and evaluation of a process framework called the Vulnerability, Consequences, and Adaptation Planning Scenarios (VCAPS) process. VCAPS is a systematic approach to integrate local knowledge with scientific understanding by providing opportunities for facilitated, deliberative learning-based activities with local decision makers about climate change vulnerability and adaptation. We introduce the conceptual basis of the process in analytic-deliberation, hazard management, and vulnerability. Our evaluations from eight coastal communities where the approach was applied point to four assets of VCAPS: it promotes synthesis of local and scientific knowledge; it stimulates systems thinking and learning; it facilitates governance by producing action plans with transparent justifications; and it accommodates participant time constraints and preferences. Abstract

We report on a new measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry in quasielastic electron scat- tering from the deuteron at backward angles at Q2 = 0.038 (GeV/c)2. This quantity provides a de- termination of the neutral weak axial vector form factor of the nucleon, which can potentially receive large electroweak corrections. The measured asymmetry A = −3.51 ± 0.57 (stat) ± 0.58 (sys) ppm is consistent with theoretical predictions. We also report on updated results of the previous experiment at Q2 = 0.091 (GeV/c)2, which are also consistent with theoretical predictions.

Abstract

We report a new determination of the strange quark contribution to the proton’s magnetic form factor at a four-momentum transfer Q2 = 0.1(GeV/c)2 from parity-violating e-p elastic scattering. The result uses a revised analysis of data from the SAMPLE experiment which was carried out at the MIT-Bates Laboratory. The data are combined with a calculation of the proton’s axial form factor GeA to determine the strange form factor GsM (Q2=0.1)=0.37±0.20±0.26±0.07. The extrapolation of GsM to its Q2 = 0 limit and comparison with calculations is also discussed.

Abstract

Tensor polarization observables ( t20, t21, and t22) have been measured in elastic electron-deuteron scattering for six values of momentum transfer between 0.66 and 1.7(GeV/c)2. The experiment was performed at the Jefferson Laboratory in Hall C using the electron High Momentum Spectrometer, a specially designed deuteron magnetic channel and the recoil deuteron polarimeter POLDER. The new data determine to much larger Q2 the deuteron charge form factors GC and GQ. They are in good agreement with relativistic calculations and disagree with perturbative QCD predictions.

Abstract

We report a measurement of the asymmetry in spin-dependent quasielastic scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons from a polarized ³He gas target. The asymmetry is measured at kinematics sensitive to the transverse-longitudinal response function RTL(Q2,ω). The value of the neutron electric form factor GEn(Q2=0.16 (GeV/c2))=+0.070±0.100±0.035 is extracted from the asymmetry using a Faddeev calculation of the ³He wave function.

Abstract

OBJECTIVE: To identify predictors of severe retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in a large population-based cohort and to examine risk-adjusted variations across units. STUDY DESIGN: Retrospective analysis of Canadian Neonatal Network data on neonates with birth weight <1500 g who were screened for ROP between 2003 and 2010. Characteristics of infants with and without ROP were compared and a risk-adjusted model for severe ROP was developed. Rates of severe ROP were compared between sites. RESULTS: 1163 of 9187 (12.7%) infants developed severe ROP. Lower gestational age, male sex, small for gestational age, patent ductus arteriosus, late onset sepsis, more than two blood transfusions, inotrope use, and outborn status were associated with an increased risk of severe ROP. Severe ROP rates varied significantly between units CONCLUSION: Younger, smaller and sicker male infants had higher adjusted risks of severe ROP and rates varied significantly among sites. Abstract

This measurement represents the first demonstration of a new method for studying electromagnetic nuclear structure: the scattering of polarized electrons from a polarized nuclear target. The measured asymmetry is in good agreement with a Faddeev calculation and supports the picture of spin-dependent quasielastic scattering from polarized 3He as predominantly scattering from a polarized neutron.

Abstract

We present the results of a measurement of the spin-dependent asymmetry in 3→(e→,e′) inelastic scattering at kinematics on the low-energy transfer side of the quasielastic peak, including the region near the breakup threshold. Comparison with existing calculations based upon the plane wave impulse approximation shows significant deviation between the data and the model near the breakup threshold. Good agreement between data and theory is seen at higher energy transfer.

Abstract

We present the results of a measurement of the spin-dependent asymmetry in 3→(e→,e′) inelastic scattering at kinematics on the low-energy transfer side of the quasielastic peak, including the region near the breakup threshold. Comparison with existing calculations based upon the plane wave impulse approximation shows significant deviation between the data and the model near the breakup threshold. Good agreement between data and theory is seen at higher energy transfer.

Abstract

The MIT Bates 1 GeV electron scattering facility has recently completed a demanding set of parity violating experiments on the proton and the deuteron. These experiments required a polarized electron beam of unprecedented quality and high average currents. The facility has invested heavily in infrastructure for producing polarized beams and measuring beam polarization. This infrastructure includes a test beam set-up, a transmission polarimeter at 20 MeV, a laser back-scattering Compton polarimeter and a Siberian Snake. The polarized source group is also actively pursuing laser systems and photocathodes that could deliver high polarization, high peak current and moderate average current beams to meet the needs of the physics programs at Bates in the coming years. © 2001 American Institute of Physics. Abstract

We report a measurement of the asymmetry in spin-dependent quasielastic scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons from a polarized ³He target. The neutron magnetic form factor GM^n has been extracted from the measured asymmetry based on recent PWIA calculations using spin-dependent spectral functions. Our determination of GM^n at Q² = 0.19 (GeV/c)² agrees with the dipole parametrization. This experiment represents the first measurement of the neutron magnetic form factor using spin-dependent electron scattering.
