Objective: Maternal obesity and gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) are becoming major public health concerns in developing countries. Understanding their relationship can help in developing contextually appropriate and targeted prevention strategies and interventions to improve maternal and infant health outcomes. This study aimed to determine the association of maternal overweight and obesity with GDM among pregnant women in Ethiopia., Design: Case-control study., Setting: The study was conducted in selected public hospitals in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, from 10 March to 30 July 2020., Participants: 159 pregnant women with GDM (cases) and 477 pregnant women without GDM (controls)., Outcome Measures and Data Analysis: Screening and diagnosis of GDM in pregnant women was done by a physician using the 2013 WHO criteria of 1-hour plasma glucose level of 10.0 mmol/L (180 mg/dL) or 2-hour plasma glucose level of 8.5-11.0 mmol/L (153-199 mg/dL) following a 75 g oral glucose load. Overweight and obesity were measured using mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC). Binary logistic regression with bivariate and multivariable models was done to measure the association of overweight and obesity with GDM. Adjusted ORs (AORs) with a 95% CI were computed, and statistical significance was determined at a value of p=0.05., Results: GDM was associated with obesity (MUAC≥31) (AOR 2.80; 95% CI 1.58 to 4.90), previous history of caesarean section (AOR 1.91; 95% CI 1.14 to 3.21) and inadequate Minimum Dietary Diversification Score <5 (AOR 3.55; 95% CI 2.15 to 5.86). The AOR for overweight (MUAC≥28 and MUAC<31) was 1.51 (95% CI 0.71 to 3.21). The odds of developing GDM were 72% lower in pregnant women who were engaging in high-level physical activity (AOR 0.28; 95% CI 0.12 to 0.67)., Conclusion: Obesity, but not overweight, was significantly associated with the development of GDM. Screening for GDM is recommended for pregnant women with obesity (MUAC≥31) for targeted intervention. Background: HIV/AIDS is affecting the majority of the population, particularly the productive age group between 15-49 years resulting in social and economic crisis. The rate of HIV infection would undoubtedly be lowered if safe sexual practices such as correct and consistent use of condoms had been followed. The aim of this study was therefore to assess intention to use condom among students in Agena preparatory school, Guraghe zone, Ethiopia. Agena is an urban area in south Ethiopia., Methods: Institution based cross-sectional study was conducted. A two stage sampling was applied by stratifying students in to (grade 11 and 12) with each grade having four section (A, B, C, D). Then systematic random sampling was used to select students in each section. Analyses of frequencies and summary measures like mean and Standard Deviation of selected variables were done. Bivariate and multivariate analysis was done to measure the association between different variables., Results: Out of 450 respondents 122(27.1%) had history of sexual intercourse. Of whom the majority 86(70.5%) had two or more sexual partners. And 45(37%) never used condom, 12(9.8%) used condom sometimes and 65(53.2%) used condom every time during sex. About 300(67.7%) of the respondents have no intention to use condom in the next sexual encounter. On multivariate analysis those students who have high perceived susceptibility (AOR = 1.94 (1.16-3.2)) and high self-efficacy (AOR = 27 (14.4-54.2)) were more likely to have intention to use condom than others., Conclusions: Intention to use condom in the next sexual intercourse is very low. Information Education and Communication (IEC) on reducing number of sexual partners along with condom use promotion targeting in-school adolescents should be the primary strategy of HIV/AIDS prevention process.

Background: It is now recognized that surveys of unique communities are important to better understand the epidemiology of mental disorders. The Zeway islanders are completely different from the surrounding cultural groups, in the midst of whom they have been living in isolation for over three centuries., Objectives: To describe the prevalence and sociodemographic correlates of major mental disorders in this community., Methods: Trained and supervised field workers were employed to conduct a door-to-door survey of the entire adult population of the islands using the Amharic CIDI (Composite International Diagnostic Interview)., Results: A total of 18.3% of the study subjects were classified as having ICD-10 diagnoses, excluding substance use disorders. The most prevalent CIDI/ICD-10 disorder in the study were neurotic and somatoform disorders (17%). Affective disorders were present in 2.2% while no cases of psychoses were found. The prevalence of tobacco use and alcohol dependence was 0.4% and 1.5%, respectively, with all cases being males., Conclusion: The pattern of occurrence of mental disorders in this isolated community is different from other populations in Ethiopia and elsewhere with no reported case of psychoses.

This study aimed to estimate the lifetime prevalence and socio-demographic correlates of psychiatric disorders among the Borana semi-nomadic community of the Oromia region of Ethiopia. 1854 people of both sexes, aged 15 years and above, were interviewed during the survey. The households were selected by using a cluster sampling method proportionate to population size. The interviews were conducted by trained high school graduates using the Oromiffa version of the Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI). The lifetime prevalence of ICD-10 mental disorders, including substance abuse, was 21.6%. Affective disorders were found in 1.7% of the study population, whereas neurotic and somatoform disorders constituted 14%. No cases of schizophrenia were detected. The prevalence of substance use was 10.1%. Studies using other methods, including interview by clinicians, might shed more light on the nature of mental illness in this unique community.
