Abstract

Mu2e at Fermilab will search for charged lepton flavor violation via the coherent conversion process mu- N --> e- N with a sensitivity approximately four orders of magnitude better than the current world's best limits for this process. The experiment's sensitivity offers discovery potential over a wide array of new physics models and probes mass scales well beyond the reach of the LHC. We describe herein the conceptual design of the proposed Mu2e experiment. Abstract

This paper reports the first measurement using the NOvA detectors of nu(mu) disappearance in a nu(mu) beam. The analysis uses a 14 kton-equivalent exposure of 2.74 x 10(20) protons-on-target from the Fermilab NuMI beam. Assuming the normal neutrino mass hierarchy, we measure Delta m(32)(2) = (2.52(-0.18)(+0.20)) x 10(-3) eV(2) and sin(2) theta(23) in the range 0.38-0.65, both at the 68% confidence level, with two statistically degenerate best-fit points at sin(2) theta(23) = 0.43 and 0.60. Results for the inverted mass hierarchy are also presented.

Abstract

We report results from the first search for nu(mu) -> nu(e) transitions by the NOvA experiment. In an exposure equivalent to 2.74 x 10(20) protons on target in the upgraded NuMI beam at Fermilab, we observe 6 events in the Far Detector, compared to a background expectation of 0.99 +/- 0.11 (syst) events based on the Near Detector measurement. A secondary analysis observes 11 events with a background of 1.07 +/- 0.14 (syst). The 3.3 sigma excess of events observed in the primary analysis disfavors 0.1 pi < delta(CP) < 0.5 pi in the inverted mass hierarchy at the 90% C.L.

122. Mycetoma Caused by a New Red Grain Mycetoma Agent in Two Members of a Family

Abstract

An 18-year-old woman from rural West Bengal was affected with mycetoma involving her neck, back, and chest. After an interval of eight years, her younger brother developed mycetoma on his left arm. No history of trauma or immune deficiency was present in either case. By microscopic examination of sinus-discharged materials from both the cases, identical rusty red, hard grains were demonstrated. Soluble red pigment-producing colonies grew in Sabouraud dextrose-agar medium. Isolates were positive for casein hydrolysis and negative for hydrolysis test of xanthine, hypoxanthine, tyrosine, and nitrate reduction. Thus it differed from the only known red grain mycetoma agent, Actinomadura pelletieri and was provisionally identified as Actinomadura vinacea. Familial affection in mycetoma, that too caused by a new agent, is reported here for its uniqueness.

123. An experimental study of boundary layer transition induced by a cylinder wake

Abstract

Boundary layer transition induced by the wake of a circular cylinder in the free stream has been investigated using the particle image velocimetry technique. Some differences between simulation and experimental studies have been reported in the literature, and these have motivated the present study. The appearance of spanwise vortices in the early stage is further confirmed here. Lambda spanwise vortex appears to evolve into a Lambda/hairpin vortex; the flow statistics also confirm such vortices. With increasing Reynolds number, based on the cylinder diameter, and with decreasing cylinder height from the plate, the physical size of these hairpin-like structures is found to decrease. Some mean flow characteristics, including the streamwise growth of the disturbance energy, in a wake-induced transition resemble those in bypass transition induced by free stream turbulence. Streamwise velocity streaks that are eventually generated in the late stage often undergo sinuous-type oscillations. Similar to other transitional flows, an inclined shear layer in the wall-normal plane is often seen to oscillate and shed vortices. The normalized shedding frequency of these vortices, estimated from the spatial spacing and the convection velocity of these vortices, is found to be independent of the Reynolds number, similar to that in ribbon-induced transition. Although the nature of free stream disturbance in a wake-induced transition and that in a bypass transition are different, the late-stage features including the flow breakdown characteristics of these two transitions appear to be similar.

133. Linear stability, transient growth and the role of viscosity stratification in compressible Couette flow

Abstract

Linear stability and the nonmodal transient energy growth in compressible plane Couette flow are investigated for two prototype mean flows: (a) the uniform shear flow with constant viscosity, and (b) the nonuniform shear flow with stratified viscosity. Both mean flows are linearly unstable for a range of supersonic Mach numbers (M). For a given M, the critical Reynolds number (Re) is significantly smaller for the uniform shear flow than its nonuniform shear counterpart; for a given Re, the dominant instability (over all streamwise wave numbers, α) of each mean flow belongs to different modes for a range of supersonic M. An analysis of perturbation energy reveals that the instability is primarily caused by an excess transfer of energy from mean flow to perturbations. It is shown that the energy transfer from mean flow occurs close to the moving top wall for “mode I” instability, whereas it occurs in the bulk of the flow domain for “mode II.” For the nonmodal transient growth analysis, it is shown that the maximum temporal amplification of perturbation energy, Gmax, and the corresponding time scale are significantly larger for the uniform shear case compared to those for its nonuniform counterpart. For α=0, the linear stability operator can be partitioned into L∼L̅ +Re2 Lp, and the Re-dependent operator Lp is shown to have a negligibly small contribution to perturbation energy which is responsible for the validity of the well-known quadratic-scaling law in uniform shear flow: G(t∕Re)∼Re2. In contrast, the dominance of Lp is responsible for the invalidity of this scaling law in nonuniform shear flow. An inviscid reduced model, based on Ellingsen-Palm-type solution, has been shown to capture all salient features of transient energy growth of full viscous problem. For both modal and nonmodal instability, it is shown that the viscosity stratification of the underlying mean flow would lead to a delayed transition in compressible Couette flow.

Abstract

Slip stacking has been onperational at Fermilab Main Injector (MI) since December 2004. The proton beam intensity for the anti proton production was increased by 70% with the stacking scheme. We plan to use it also for the Numi operation which is providing beams to the MINOS neutrino experiment.

Abstract

Deletions of chromosome sequences mapping to the short arm of chromosome 8 have been observed frequently in a variety of human cancers. A small number of studies have suggested that the terminal portion of the short arm of chromosome 8, 8pter-p23, may be deleted independently of other portions of 8p in human tumors, and that deletion of the 8pter-p23 region may be correlated with poor prognosis. The aim of the present study was to physically define the minimal region of 8pter-p23 deletion and to define the frequency and prognostic significance of 8pter-p23 loss in human prostate tumors. DNA was purified from normal and tumor tissues of 45 radical prostatectomy specimens and amplified for 15 highly polymorphic microsatellite sequences, 13 spanning 8pter-p23 and 2 proximal 8p markers. Allelic loss of 8p sequences was observed in 28 of 45 (62%) tumors examined. Of these, approximately half (12 of 28; 43%) demonstrated independent loss of the 8pter-p23 region, with several tumors defining a 5-cM minimal region of deletion spanning D8S264-D8S1824-D8S1781-D8S262-D8S1798. When serum prostate-specific antigen was used as a surrogate end point marker for survival, 8pter-p23 loss was significantly associated with reduced disease-free progression (log-rank P = 0.0426). Moreover, loss of the 8pter-p23 region was significantly associated with poor survival for American Caucasian (log-rank P = 0.0024) but not African-American (log-rank P = 0.5832) prostate cancer patients. These studies suggest that independent deletion of 8pter-p23 is differentially associated with disease recurrence and poor outcome in American Caucasian but not African-American prostate cancer patients.

Abstract

The Fermilab Main Injector was designed to accelerate protons and antiprotons from a momentum of 8.889 GeV/c to 150 GeV/c. In order to study antiproton deceleration, for the ultimate purpose of storing them in a Penning trap, the Main Injector was used to decelerate protons from the injection momentum down to the goal of 2.0 GeV/c. In this paper the operational experience of working with the Main Injector as a decelerator is presented. (1 refs).
