Abstract

A dramatic temperature dependent enhancement of U 5f spectral weight at EF is observed in angle-resolved photoemission measurements of URu_2Si_2 at the center of an X-point hole-pocket. Comparison of this temperature dependent behavior for excitation both at and below the U 5d->5f resonant threshold is presented.

Abstract

Surface-related effects in angle-resolved valence spectra of CeRu_2Si_2 at the Ce 4d->$5f resonance threshold for different cleaved surfaces are presented and compared to angle-integrated valence spectra and to bulk-sensitive Ce 3d-edge valence spectra. Evidence that Ce 4d-edge photoemission spectroscopy on ideal cleaved surfaces is dominated by bulk Ce 4f states is presented.

Abstract

Boron K-edge soft x-ray emission and absorption are used to address the fundamental question of whether divalent hexaborides are intrinsic semimetals or defect-doped bandgap insulators. These bulk sensitive measurements, complementary and consistent with surface-sensitive angle-resolved photoemission experiments, confirm the existence of a bulk band gap and the location of the chemical potential at the bottom of the conduction band.

Abstract

Kramers nodal lines (KNLs) have recently been proposed theoretically as a special type of Weyl line degeneracy connecting time-reversal invariant momenta. KNLs are robust to spin orbit coupling and are inherent to all non-centrosymmetric achiral crystal structures, leading to unusual spin, magneto-electric, and optical properties. However, their existence in in real quantum materials has not been experimentally established. Here we gather the experimental evidence pointing at the presence of KNLs in SmAlSi, a non-centrosymmetric metal that develops incommensurate spin density wave order at low temperature. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, density functional theory calculations, and magneto-transport methods, we provide evidence suggesting the presence of KNLs, together with observing Weyl fermions under the broken inversion symmetry in the paramagnetic phase of SmAlSi. We discuss the nesting possibilities regarding the emergent magnetic orders in SmAlSi. Our results provide a solid basis of experimental observations for exploring correlated topology in SmAlSi. © 2023, The Author(s).

Abstract

The classification scheme of electronic phases uses two prominent paradigms: correlations and topology. Electron correlations give rise to superconductivity and charge density waves, while the quantum geometric Berry phase gives rise to electronic topology. The intersection of these two paradigms has initiated an effort to discover electronic instabilities at or near the Fermi level of topological materials. Here we identify the electronic topology of chiral fermions as the driving mechanism for creating van Hove singularities that host electronic instabilities in the surface band structure. We observe that the chiral fermion conductors RhSi and CoSi possess two types of helicoid arc van Hove singularities that we call type I and type II. In RhSi, the type I variety drives a switching of the connectivity of the helicoid arcs at different energies. In CoSi, we measure a type II intra-helicoid arc van Hove singularity near the Fermi level. Chemical engineering methods are able to tune the energy of these singularities. Finally, electronic susceptibility calculations allow us to visualize the dominant Fermi surface nesting vectors of the helicoid arc singularities, consistent with recent observations of surface charge density wave ordering in CoSi. This suggests a connection between helicoid arc singularities and surface charge density waves.Strong correlations between electrons in topological surface states drive the formation of surface van Hove singularities. These may be linked to charge density waves in the surface states.

Abstract

Magnetism breaks the time-reversal symmetry expected to open a Dirac gap in 3D topological insulators that consequently leads to the quantum anomalous Hall effect. The most common approach of inducing a ferromagnetic state is by doping magnetic 3 d elements into the bulk of 3D topological insulators. In Cr 0.15 (Bi 0.1 Sb 0.9) 1.85 Te 3 , the material where the quantum anomalous Hall effect was initially discovered at temperatures much lower than the ferromagnetic transition, T C , the scanning tunneling microscopy studies have reported a large Dirac gap of ∼ 20 – 100 meV. The discrepancy between the low temperature of quantum anomalous Hall effect (≪ T C) and large spectroscopic Dirac gaps (≫ T C) found in magnetic topological insulators remains puzzling. Here, we used angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy to study the surface electronic structure of the pristine and potassium doped surface of Cr 0.15 (Bi 0.1 Sb 0.9) 1.85 Te 3. Upon potassium deposition, the p -type surface state of the pristine sample was turned into an n -type, allowing the spectroscopic observation of Dirac point. Abstract

Complex electronic phases in strongly correlated electron systems are manifested by broken symmetries in the low-energy electronic states. Some mysterious phases, however, exhibit intriguing energy gap opening without an apparent signature of symmetry breaking (e.g., high-TC cuprates and heavy fermion superconductors). Here, we report an unconventional gap opening in a heterostructured, iron-based superconductor Sr2VO3FeAs across a phase transition at T 0 ∼150 K. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we identify that a fully isotropic gap opens selectively on one of the Fermi surfaces with finite warping along the interlayer direction. This band selectivity is incompatible with conventional gap opening mechanisms associated with symmetry breaking. These findings, together with the unusual field-dependent magnetoresistance, suggest that the Kondo-type proximity coupling of itinerant Fe electrons to localized V spin plays a role in stabilizing the exotic phase, which may serve as a distinct precursor state for unconventional superconductivity.

Abstract

The heavy fermion state with Kondo-hybridisation (KH), usually manifested in f-electron systems with lanthanide or actinide elements, was recently discovered in several 3d transition metal compounds without f-electrons. However, KH has not yet been observed in 4d/5d transition metal compounds, since more extended 4d/5d orbitals do not usually form flat bands that supply localised electrons appropriate for Kondo pairing. Here, we report a substitution- and temperature-dependent angle-resolved photoemission study on 4d Ca2−xSrxRuO4, which shows the signature of KH. We observed a spectral weight transfer in the γ-band, reminiscent of an orbital-selective Mott phase (OSMP). The Mott localised γ-band induces the KH with an itinerant β-band, resulting in spectral weight suppression around the Fermi level. Our work demonstrates the evolution of the OSMP with possible KH among 4d electrons, and thereby expands the material boundary of Kondo physics to 4d multi-orbital systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Electronic correlation is of fundamental importance to high temperature superconductivity. While the low energy electronic states in cuprates are dominantly affected by correlation effects across the phase diagram, observation of correlation-driven changes in fermiology amongst the iron-based superconductors remains rare. Here we present experimental evidence for a correlation-driven reconstruction of the Fermi surface tuned independently by two orthogonal axes of temperature and Se/Te ratio in the iron chalcogenide family FeTe1−xSex. We demonstrate that this reconstruction is driven by the de-hybridization of a strongly renormalized dxy orbital with the remaining itinerant iron 3d orbitals in the emergence of an orbital-selective Mott phase. Our observations are further supported by our theoretical calculations to be salient spectroscopic signatures of such a non-thermal evolution from a strongly correlated metallic phase into an orbital-selective Mott phase in dxy as Se concentration is reduced. The underlying mechanism of iron-based superconductivity, the role of electron correlations, and the extent to which the behavior resembles those of the cuprates has been debated since their discovery. Here, using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy, the authors report reconstruction of the Fermi surface for FeTe1−xSex driven by orbital-dependent correlation effects in the absence of symmetry breaking and find evidence for an orbital-selective Mott transition. Abstract

The massless Dirac electrons found at topological insulator surfaces are thought to be influenced very little by weak, non-magnetic disorder. However, a resonance effect of strongly perturbing non-magnetic impurities has been theoretically predicted to change the dispersion and physical nature of low-energy quasiparticles, resulting in unique particle-like states that lack microscopic translational symmetry. Here we report the direct observation of impurities reshaping the surface Dirac cone of the model three-dimensional topological insulator bismuth selenide. A pronounced kink-like dispersion feature is observed in disorder-enriched samples, and found to be closely associated with the anomaly caused by impurity resonance in the surface state density of states, as observed by dichroic angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. The experimental observation of these features, which closely resemble theoretical predictions, has significant implications for the properties of topological Dirac cones in applied scenarios that commonly feature point-defect disorder at surfaces or interfaces. Topological insulators - influence of surface impurities: The electronic properties of topological insulators are robust against perturbations, including the presence of non-magnetic impurities. Abstract

Complex electronic phases in strongly correlated electron systems are manifested by broken symmetries in the low-energy electronic states. Some mysterious phases, however, exhibit intriguing energy gap opening without an apparent signature of symmetry breaking (e.g., high-TC cuprates and heavy fermion superconductors). Here, we report an unconventional gap opening in a heterostructured, iron-based superconductor Sr2VO3FeAs across a phase transition at T0 ~150 K. Using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy, we identify that a fully isotropic gap opens selectively on one of the Fermi surfaces with finite warping along the interlayer direction. This band selectivity is incompatible with conventional gap opening mechanisms associated with symmetry breaking. These findings, together with the unusual field-dependent magnetoresistance, suggest that the Kondo-type proximity coupling of itinerant Fe electrons to localized V spin plays a role in stabilizing the exotic phase, which may serve as a distinct precursor state for unconventional superconductivity. Abstract

© 2018 American Physical Society. We have measured the signatures of electronic energy scales and their doping evolution in the band structure of (Sr1-xLax)3Ir2O7 using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. While band splittings and positions corresponding to the bilayer splitting and spin-orbit coupling undergo only small changes, the Mott gap and effective mass of both the lower Hubbard band and conduction band exhibit strong variations with doping. These changes correspond to similar observations in the cuprate superconductors, and are likely connected to the changing effective Coulomb interaction upon addition of itinerant carriers.

Abstract

We have measured the band edge energies of CdxZn1–xO thin films as a function of composition by three independent techniques: we determine the Fermi level stabilization energy by pinning the Fermi level with ion irradiation, measure the binding energy of valence band states and core levels by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and probe shifts in the conduction band and valence band density of states using soft X-ray absorption and emission spectroscopy, respectively. The three techniques find consensus in explaining the origin of compositional trends in the optical-bandgap narrowing upon Cd incorporation in wurtzite ZnO and widening upon Zn incorporation in rocksalt CdO. The conduction band minimum is found to be stationary for both wurtzite and rocksalt alloys, and a significant upward rise of the valence band maximum accounts for the majority of these observed bandgap changes. Given these band alignments, alloy disorder scattering is found to play a negligible role in decreasing the electron mobility for all alloys. These band alignment details, combined with the unique optical and electrical properties of the two phase regimes, make CdZnO alloys attractive candidates for photoelectrochemical water splitting applications. Abstract

The local structure of boron-doped highly oriented graphite films was determined via soft x-ray emission and absorption spectroscopy using synchrotron radiation. Analysis of the BK and CK x-ray emission spectra using the discrete variational-Xα molecular orbital method clarified that boron atoms are chemisorbed onto graphite by substituting for carbon atoms in the carbon hexagonal rings. Compared to graphite, boron-doped graphite exhibits spectral differences in the higher edge of the CK x-ray emission spectrum and the CK x-ray absorption edge. Abstract

Recent progress in the field of topological states of matter(1,2) has largely been initiated by the discovery of bismuth and antimony chalcogenide bulk topological insulators (TIs)(3-6), followed by closely related ternary compounds(7-16) and predictions of several weak TIs(17-19). However, both the conceptual richness of Z$_2$ classification of TIs as well as their structural and compositional diversity are far from being fully exploited. Here, a new Z$_2$ topological insulator is theoretically predicted and experimentally confirmed in the $��$-phase of quasi-one-dimensional bismuth iodide Bi$_4$I$_4$. The electronic structure of $��$-Bi$_4$I$_4$, characterized by Z$_2$ invariants (1;110), is in proximity of both the weak TI phase (0;001) and the trivial insulator phase (0;000). Our angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurements on the (001) surface reveal a highly anisotropic band-crossing feature located at the point of the surface Brillouin zone and showing no dispersion with the photon energy, thus being fully consistent with the theoretical prediction.
