Abstract

Timing-based side and covert channels in processor caches continue to be a threat to modern computers. This work shows for the first time, a systematic, large-scale analysis of Arm devices and the detailed results of attacks the processors are vulnerable to. Compared to x86, Arm uses different architectures, microarchitectural implementations, cache replacement policies, etc., which affects how attacks can be launched, and how security testing for the vulnerabilities should be done. To evaluate security, this paper presents security benchmarks specifically developed for testing Arm processors and their caches. The benchmarks are evaluated with sensitivity tests, which examine how sensitive the benchmarks are to having a correct configuration in the testing phase. Further, to evaluate a large number of devices, this work leverages a novel approach of using a cloud-based Arm device testbed for architectural and security research on timing channels and runs the benchmarks on 34 different physical devices. In parallel, there has been much interest in secure caches to defend the various attacks. Consequently, this paper also investigates secure cache architectures using proposed benchmarks. Especially, this paper implements and evaluates secure PL and RF caches, showing the security of PL and RF caches, but also uncovers new weaknesses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

In this paper, a shape optimization method for Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) antenna-array with curved-groove defect ground structure (DGS) is proposed to improve the decoupling performances and maintain the radiation performances of array. The curved-groove DGS is depicted by the irregular shaped neutral-line and the neutral-line displacement shifted along the positive and negative y-axis directions. The curve shape function of the neutral-line is constructed and expressed as a trigonometric series. Thus, the factors corresponding to the trigonometric function expansion are used as the shape description parameters. The proposed method is to achieve the desired array performances by optimizing the shape description parameters of the curved-groove DGS. The parametric modelling is established based on the relationships between the performances and the shape description parameters, and the optimization problem is effectively solved by GA. A typical numerical example, i.e., a 2 × 1 MIMO array (36.9 × 24 × 1.6 mm3), verifies the effectiveness of the proposed method. The results show that, compared with non-DGS and the linear-groove DGS, the optimized curved-groove DGS can effectively suppress the mutual coupling of 37.92 dB and 21.73 dB, respectively, while ensuring that the array has the excellent performances and covers the predetermined WLAN frequency range (5.725 GHz ~ 5.825 GHz).

Abstract

Magnusiomyces capitatus is an emerging opportunistic yeast, thus far mainly reported from the Western world where fungemia is the most frequent presentation in immunocompromised patients with high mortality. We described a rare case of Magnusiomyces capitatus infection from our hospital in China and reviewed six further cases published to date in Chinese literature. It is noted that half more of the cases (4/7) presented with fungemia in younger, immunosuppressed patients, whereas the remaining cases were with pneumonia in elderly, immunocompetent patients. All seven Chinese cases had favourable outcome with antifungal therapy. Based on the limited in vitro and clinical data, a combination of amphotericin B either with 5-fluorocytosine or voriconazole for fungemia in immunocompromised patients, and although fluconazole is not recommended as first-line therapy in the guideline, in our study, fluconazole alone or with 5-fluorocytosine for local pulmonary infection in immunocompetent patients is effective with good outcome. Abstract

Under uncontrolled image conditions, one of the greatest remaining research challenges in face recognition is to recognize faces across different poses. For multi-views face recognition problem either by means of difficult practical three-dimensional methods, either by means of a complex nonlinear transform algorithm. In order to overcome the poses problem, this paper analyzed the spatial change of different pose, regarded the faces with different pose space as a kind of approximate linear relationship by discretion of face pose space. As a consequence, a pose invariant face recognition method based on Orthogonal Procrustes analysis and sparse representation is proposed in this paper. Experimental results demonstrate that the presented algorithm possesses good robustness for the face variation of poses.

Abstract

The Trichophyton rubrum species complex comprises commonly encountered dermatophytic fungi with a worldwide distribution. The members of the complex usually have distinct phenotypes in culture and cause different clinical symptoms, despite high genome similarity. In order to better delimit the species within the complex, molecular, phenotypic, and physiological characteristics were combined to reestablish a natural species concept. Three groups, T. rubrum, T. soudanense, and T. violaceum, could be distinguished based on the sequence of the internal transcribed spacer (ITS) ribosomal DNA barcode gene. On average, strains within each group were similar by colony appearance, microscopy, and physiology, but strains between groups showed significant differences. Trichophyton rubrum strains had higher keratinase activity, whereas T. violaceum strains tended to be more lipophilic; however, none of the phenotypic features were diagnostic. The results of matrix-assisted laser desorption ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOF MS) and amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) were partially consistent with the ITS data but failed to distinguish the species unambiguously. Despite their close similarity, T. violaceum, T. soudanense, and T. rubrum can be regarded as independent species with distinct geographical distributions and clinical predilections. Trichophyton soudanense is pheno- and genotypically intermediate between T. rubrum and T. violaceum For routine diagnostics, ITS sequencing is recommended.

Abstract

BACKGROUND The authors noticed that ankle joint osteoarthritis was not uncommon when lower extremity malalignment, such as a knee varus deformity, was present as a result of severe osteoarthritis of the knee. The purpose of this study was to analyze radiologic changes of the ankle joint after total knee arthroplasty. METHODS This study included 142 cases in 110 patients who underwent total knee arthroplasty and were followed for at least 3 years. The varus knee group included 128 cases and the valgus knee group included 14 cases. On anteroposterior standing lower extremity radiographs, varus and valgus angles of the knee were measured preoperatively and at the last follow-up. The angle between the ground surface and the distal tibial plafond as well as the upper talus was also measured. In addition, tibial anterior surface angle, talar tilt, space between the medial malleolar distal tip and the medial articular surface of the talus, and medial tibiotalar joint space of the ankle joint were measured. RESULTS Out of 142 cases, 50 (35.2%) had arthritis in the ankle before total knee arthroplasty and 31 (21.8%) had newly developed or progressive arthritis after surgery. Abstract

Cases of tuberculosis/cryptococcosis co-infection are rapidly increasing in China. However, most studies addressing this co-infection have been published in Chinese journals, and this publication strategy has obscured this disease trend for scientists in other parts of the world. Our investigation found that 62.9% of all co-infection cases worldwide were reported in the Chinese population (n=197) between 1965 and 2016, and 56.3% of these Chinese cases were reported after 2010. Nearly all cases originated from the warm and wet monsoon regions of China. HIV-positive subjects tended to correlate with more severe manifestations of a tuberculosis/cryptococcosis co-infection than those without HIV. Notablely, dual tubercular/cryptococcal meningitis was the most frequent (54.0 and most easily misdiagnosed (95.2 n=40/42) co-infection. We also found that the combined use of cerebrospinal fluid pressure and concentrations of glucose, protein and chlorine might be an inexpensive and effective indicator to differentiate tubercular/cryptococcal co-infection meningitis from tubercular meningitis and cryptococcal meningitis.
